Quality Care For Neurodivergent Youth, Emily V. Bogaev
Quality Care For Neurodivergent Youth, Emily V. Bogaev
Dissertations, 2020-current
Neurodivergent youth are becoming increasingly present in counseling settings, yet many counseling approaches have historically been shaped by deficit-oriented frameworks that conceptualize neurodivergence as something to be corrected. These perspectives may overlook the lived experiences and strengths of neurodivergent individuals. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine neurodivergence in counseling through three complementary manuscripts addressing conceptual foundations, youth perspectives, and counselor preparation. The first manuscript is a conceptual article that explores neurodivergent-affirming counseling and contrasts affirming frameworks with traditional deficit-based approaches. The second manuscript utilized a qualitative narrative inquiry design to explore neurodivergent youths’ perceptions of neurodivergence and the …
Professional Dispositions In Counselor Education: Building Consensus, Examining Lived Experience, And Advancing Relational Gatekeeping, Jina Yang
Dissertations, 2020-current
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)-accredited programs identify, implement, and assess essential professional dispositions among master’s-level counselors-in-training (CITs). The dissertation includes three components that examine conceptual, experiential, and consensus-based perspectives on professional dispositions within counselor education. The first component presents a conceptual framework for implementing gatekeeping practices that reflect the values of the counseling profession. Drawing on Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT), the article proposes gatekeeping strategies that emphasize mutuality and connection while accounting for sociocultural contextual factors and fostering psychological safety within the hierarchical dynamics inherent in evaluative …
Pre-Chiropractic Student Organization At The University Of Mississippi: Education Of Future Chiropractic Students And Empowerment Of The Public With Chiropractic Knowledge, Avery E. Lirette
Honors Theses
The chiropractic profession continues to grow within the allied health community, yet public understanding of its scope remains limited. Prior to the creation of the Pre-Chiropractic Student Organization (PCSO) at The University of Mississippi, students interested in pursuing chiropractic education lacked a structured support system in comparison to those available for other health professions on campus. This thesis documents the foundation, development, and impact of the PCSO as a registered student organization that was designed to educate undergraduate students about the chiropractic profession, connect them with mentors and graduate programs, and promote public awareness of chiropractic care.

Justice-Oriented Pedagogy: Personal And Programmatic Commitments In Teacher Education, Cheetara A. Hudson
Dissertations
This qualitative case study examined how faculty in an urban, justice-oriented undergraduate teacher education program prepare elementary teacher candidates to develop socially just and culturally responsive teaching practices. Guided by Critical Race Theory and critical multiculturalism, this study explored how instructors integrated social justice education and culturally responsive pedagogy into coursework and field experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis with four faculty members teaching foundational and methods courses. Thematic analysis revealed four key findings: (a) faculty beliefs and identities, shaped by prior K–12 teaching experiences, strongly influence their pedagogical choices; (b) instructors model justice-oriented …

“Like Taking Your Armor Off:” Examining The Communication Challenges Faced By Lgbtq+ Liaison Officers, Emily P. Nicholson
“Like Taking Your Armor Off:” Examining The Communication Challenges Faced By Lgbtq+ Liaison Officers, Emily P. Nicholson
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Policing has been and remains one of the most significant issues facing society in the United States. One response to this issue which has seen a rise in the last decade is the presence of liaison officer programs, which are designed to help improve police relations with vulnerable groups by forging connections with local, identity-aligned organizations and practicing identity-first policing. This study sought to understand what the challenges faced by liaison programs are and what organizational tensions are experienced by police officers in LGBTQ Liaison positions. Following an inductive approach to analysis, participants in the study engaged in a semi-structured …
Relationships Between A Neurotypical And Neurodivergent Sibling Dyad: Teaching Reciprocal Skills, Emily Weinberg
Relationships Between A Neurotypical And Neurodivergent Sibling Dyad: Teaching Reciprocal Skills, Emily Weinberg
Masters Theses, 2020-current
The purpose of this study was to implement an effective social skills curriculum in the clinic setting with an individual in home setting to determine the effects on interfering behaviors and appropriate skill use with a sibling. An ABA design was utilized to allow for comparison of effects between control and treatment conditions. The independent variable was the social skills curriculum implemented using the Behavioral Skills Training (BST) model. There were four dependent variable measures. These were the effects on interfering behaviors and the three reciprocal skills targeted: initiating conversations, asking questions, and sharing. There are not enough data to …
The Effects Of An Autism Community Member Feedback-Based Training On Increasing Positive Interaction Skills, Francis Gary Powers Iii
The Effects Of An Autism Community Member Feedback-Based Training On Increasing Positive Interaction Skills, Francis Gary Powers Iii
Masters Theses, 2020-current
The current study examined the effects of a behavioral skills training (BST) on the frequency with which participants engaged in positive interaction skills that could be used when interacting with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The behaviors for which the BST sought to increase were identified through a study that interviewed the members of a local autism community and first responders regarding actions that can be taken to foster more positive interactions when both specifically first responders and individuals with autism are at an emergency scene. A multiple baseline across behaviors design was used to assess the effect of …
How Does Age Affect Our Memory? Semantic Relatedness In Proper Name Recall, Art Beqiraj
How Does Age Affect Our Memory? Semantic Relatedness In Proper Name Recall, Art Beqiraj
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Proper names belong to a distinct class of lexical items that pose challenges for encoding and retrieval across people of all ages. Unlike common nouns, and the exception of nicknames, proper names are arbitrary relative to their referent. Forgetting someone’s name is not only seen as a social faux pas but may be particularly concerning for older adults due to its interpretation as a cognitive decline indicator. Prior research has shown that when names are physically descriptive of their referent (e.g., a giraffe called ‘Lengthy’), they are better learned and recalled; however, the extent to which descriptiveness without a visual …
Teaching "Wh" Questions To Children With Autism Using A Differential Observing Response Procedure, Margaret Piatt
Teaching "Wh" Questions To Children With Autism Using A Differential Observing Response Procedure, Margaret Piatt
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often demonstrate difficulties responding to “wh” questions (e.g., what, where, who), which are critical for social communication and academic participation. Differential observing responses (DORs) have been shown to improve discrimination learning by increasing attention to relevant stimulus features. The present study evaluated the effects of a DOR procedure using a two-stimulus visual array on the acquisition of intraverbal responding to “wh” questions in a child with ASD.
A multiple baseline across behaviors design was used to assess intervention effects across three response classes: what, where, and who questions. During …
Evaluating The Effects Of Bilingual, Video-Modified Social Story Interventions For Spanish-Speaking Children With Autism And Limited Language Abilities, Benjamin Troyer
Evaluating The Effects Of Bilingual, Video-Modified Social Story Interventions For Spanish-Speaking Children With Autism And Limited Language Abilities, Benjamin Troyer
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Social Stories ™ are interventions commonly used to target skill deficits or behavior
reduction goals for children with Autism. Most Social Story research has focused on English
speaking children with relatively advanced language abilities, limiting evidence for efficacy
with Spanish-speaking populations with lower language abilities. Some research has
demonstrated that modifying the format of a Social Story to a video format is effective at
extending the effectiveness to populations with lower language abilities. The purpose of
this study was to examine the effects of Bilingual, video-modified Social Stories on skill
acquisition and behavior reduction targets for Spanish-speaking children with ASD …

"The paper's rough consensus attributes the SDoL to differential variance in food returns across male- and female-typical foraging domains, sourcing this primarily to Bird and Codding (2015) and Kelly's (2013) reframe of the classic 'hunting vs. gathering' axis as 'risky vs. non-risky foraging.' Indeed, the data show that males more often pursue large game and honey, resources that yield higher caloric returns but with high unpredictability, injury risk, and failure rates. Females, especially those with dependent young, more often target plant foods and small game that produce steadier, lower-variance returns. But variance-buffering is a proximate ecological account, not a life …
Temporal Ubiquity, Brittni Mosby
Temporal Ubiquity, Brittni Mosby
MFA in Visual Art
My thesis examines looking as a sacred and relational practice rooted in familial memory, storytelling, and the photographic archive. Drawing from early experiences of engaging family photographs alongside my mother and great-grandmother, I conceptualize these encounters as the formation of “temporal altars”: living vessels that activate space, memory, and multiplicity. These intimate acts of looking and listening position the home as a critical site where Black subjectivity is held with care and complexity.
By casting these modes of perception into domestic spaces, my thesis not only resists reductive external gazes but interrogates the archive as a colonial apparatus structured by …

Alive In Translation, Shiyao Fu
MFA in Visual Art
Alive in Translation explores in-between cultural conditions through my process of working with materials metaphorically, focusing on how they interact and intersect. By using paradoxical pairings—organic and synthetic, fluid and rigid, liquid and solid, flux and suspension—my sculptures and installations simultaneously hold multiple conditions. My process is grounded in my own negotiations with materials. By embracing both the material limitations and my own frustrations, I allow the materials to act as active agents in my process of making. The resulting forms exist in between the materials’ own tendencies and my own intentions. My thesis project, We twist, extend, and accrete …
Consonance, Dissonance, And The Brain: Directions In Modern Concert Music, Julianna F. Stratton
Consonance, Dissonance, And The Brain: Directions In Modern Concert Music, Julianna F. Stratton
College Honors Program
Modern Western arts pedagogy can easily lead its students to believe in the unimpeded evolution of musical language, progressing from highly consonant music to the dissonant explorations of the 20th century. Although extreme schools of music made their mark on the modern music scene, and some of their techniques do continue today, recent trends in the concert hall have seemingly embraced tonality and consonance again. This work addresses some of the neuroscientific and psychological underpinnings of this change. It explores the processes by which we assign meaning to sound, which might tell us about future trajectories of music in the …

School Closure As Education Policy Failure: A Quantcrit Analysis Of Reform-Resistant Schools In Memphis (2010–2025), Stacy Hubbard Patton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
High-stakes accountability policies have reshaped urban school governance by linking standardized test performance to decisions about intervention, restructuring, and closure. Although these systems are designed to improve low-performing schools, prior research suggests that accountability classifications reflect broader structural conditions, including racial segregation and concentrated poverty, rather than isolated instructional deficits, with schools serving Black and Latino students in historically disinvested communities bearing a disproportionate share of these consequences. This study examines the 2010–2025 achievement trajectories and survival-to-closure patterns of reform-resistant schools in Memphis–Shelby County Schools, guided by Quantitative Criticalism (QuantCrit) as both a theoretical and methodological framework. School-level administrative records …

Future-Oriented Science Education: A Delphi Study Of Policymakers’ Views From Four European Countries, Sibel Erduran, Jessica Chan, Olga Ioannidou
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Future-oriented skills have become increasingly important in science education. These skills include critical thinking, problem solving and managing complexity. While policymaking has a direct bearing on the what and the how of a future-oriented perspective in science education, previous research focused on a narrow group of stakeholders such as teachers and students. Little is known about what policymakers perceive as significant future-oriented skills to be included in the science curriculum. By policymakers we mean government officials, legislators, educational administrators, and other influential figures who are key decision-makers in the educational eco-system. The exploratory empirical study reported in the paper employed …

A landlord initiated a licensee holdover proceeding against a tenant for an allegedly unregulated apartment. The court granted the tenant's pre-answer motion to interpose a late answer, citing a reasonable excuse and meritorious defenses, and noting RPAPL § 743 allows an answer at any time the petition is heard. The court also granted the tenant's motion to dismiss the petition for the landlord's failure to strictly comply with RPAPL § 741(5)(a) regarding the Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL). The landlord's notice mistakenly claimed an exemption from GCEL applicable only outside New York City and failed to cross-move to amend, leading …

Mindset Versus Circumstance: How Fatalism And Food Insecurity Shape Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption In Young Adult Latinas, Mi Zhou, Elba Nohely Vidal, Giselle Pignotti, A. Susana Ramírez
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study examined the association between fatalism and sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption among young adult Latinas, with food insecurity as a moderating factor. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 829 Latina women aged 18–29. Measures included fatalism, food insecurity, daily SSB intake, education, and income. Moderation analyses showed that fatalism was positively associated with SSB consumption (β = 5.22, p = 0.002), as was food insecurity (β = 20.40, p = 0.010). A significant interaction between fatalism and food insecurity (β = −4.85, p = 0.024) showed that fatalism predicted higher SSB intake among food-secure participants but not among …

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are approved for cancer treatment and are being investigated for a wide range of other diseases. Despite their therapeutic promise, clinical studies have reported cardiac side effects, particularly electrocardiogram (EKG) abnormalities, with QT interval prolongation being one of the most consistently reported findings. The mechanisms underlying these cardiac effects remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of HDAC3 in cardiac electrophysiology. We found that postnatal depletion of cardiac HDAC3 in mice caused QT interval prolongation, recapitulating the EKG abnormalities reported with HDAC inhibitor use. Adult-onset inducible depletion of cardiac HDAC3 induced additional EKG abnormalities, …

This study explores teacher perceptions of the role of failure in secondary school education. Our case study analysis, based on 23 interviews in Ontario, Canada, suggests secondary school teachers understand failure as a core element of the learning process. However, teachers do not feel they can easily use failure as a pedagogical tool. Teachers perceive Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines regarding student success to have created an institutional culture within which student failure is administratively burdensome and is framed as external to the learning process. These success narratives in government assessment guidelines have created a situation wherein teachers often feel …

Introductory Remarks On Gendered Anti-Palestinian Racism And Colonial Solidarities, Wafaa Hasan
Gatherings
This piece introduces a critical framework for understanding how feminism — particularly Western and settler-colonial feminisms — operates as both a site of solidarity and a mechanism of domination in relation to Palestinian women. Delivered at the inaugural Palestinian Feminist Conference at the University of Toronto (Oct. 10, 2025), the address examines how Palestinian feminist scholars and activists center epistemic resistance and collective feminist self-determination. Through the notion of Gendered Anti-Palestinian Racism (Gendered APR), the work extends analyses of Orientalist and imperial feminisms to describe a trinity of how Palestinian women are simultaneously hyper-visible — as dangerous mothers and divisive/disruptive …
