Caring In Social Studies: An Examination Of Teacher Preparation Standards, Vanializ Agramonte Mar 2024

Caring In Social Studies: An Examination Of Teacher Preparation Standards, Vanializ Agramonte

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Care is something we expect educators to demonstrate towards their students, but are theythemselves being taught the importance of care in education and prepared to enact it in their classrooms? The existing literature on care and care theory in education is limited, but shows a link between care and student success; many educators also point to anecdotal evidence of the importance of care. This study sought to examine themes of care in national standards for teacher preparation. Through the use of directed qualitative content analysis, three national teacher preparation standards (the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the Interstate …

Addressing The Failures Of Modern Math Instruction: Insights From Classical Christian Education, Carol L. Reid Mar 2024

Addressing The Failures Of Modern Math Instruction: Insights From Classical Christian Education, Carol L. Reid

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

Following the Covid 19 pandemic, standardized mathematics test scores for American 4th and 8th graders plummeted dramatically. While many have been quick to blame the sudden and chaotic quarantine-mandated movement onto virtual platforms of learning, the history of American public education reveals a centuries-old struggle for math proficiency amid inconsistent attitudes about the relevance of math, appropriate objectives for math proficiency, and the mechanisms by which numeracy should be evaluated. From the mid-19th century, during what the author will refer to as the modern education era, objectives have endured constant recalibration as oscillating priorities have dictated math skill prioritization. The …

The American View On Global Education In Curriculum And Its Necessity For Entering The Workforce, Alison Taylor

Student Theses and Dissertations

The problem addressed in this study is the lack of globalization terminology and geography standards included in the United States’ public education system leading to a workforce that is missing key 21st century skill competency. According to social efficiency theory, it is important for education to teach the necessary employability skills in the school curriculum. Geography standards align with employability skills, but the subject is disappearing from United States classrooms. This quantitative regression study evaluates the predictive relationships between exposure to geography curriculum in the United States, American perception of the importance of geography, and recent high school graduate’s self-assessed …

Abstract: This study explores the advanced mathematical modeling of electromagnetic energy harvesting in vehicle suspension systems, addressing the pressing need for sustainable transportation and improved energy efficiency. We focus on the complex challenge posed by the non-linear behavior of magnetic flux in relation to displacement, a critical aspect often overlooked in conventional approaches. Utilizing Taylor expansion and Fourier analysis, we dissect the intricate relationship between oscillation and electromagnetic damping, crucial for optimizing energy recovery. Our rigorous mathematical methodology enables the precise calculation of the average power per cycle and unit mass, providing a robust metric for evaluating the effectiveness of …

Increasing The Usage Of Mychart Bedside By Nurses And Patients In The Acute Care Setting: An Integrative Review, Laura Darnell

Dissertations

Teach-back has been a proven model to teach patients about their disease process, medications, or dressing changes in a simple-to-understand language that often includes a return demonstration. Teach-Back isn't just a tool to be used with patients, it can be used to help anyone understand something new. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model, people are less inclined to use new technology if they do not find it easy to use or useful in their day-to-day jobs. This integrative review aims to support the use of the Teach-Back method of instruction with staff, including return demonstration, to prove the ease of …

Species Abundance Modelling Of Arctic-Boreal Zone Ducks Informed By Satellite Remote Sensing, Michael Allan Merchant, Michael Battaglia, Nancy H. French, Kevin Smith, Howard V. Singer, Llwellyn Armstrong, Vanessa B. Harriman, Stuart Slattery

Michigan Tech Publications

The Arctic-Boreal zone (ABZ) covers over 26 million km2 and is home to numerous duck species; however, understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of their populations across this vast landscape is challenging, in part due to extent and data scarcity. Species abundance models for ducks in the ABZ commonly use static (time invariant) habitat covariates to inform predictions, such as wetland type and extent maps. For the first time in this region, we developed species abundance models using high-resolution, time-varying wetland inundation data produced using satellite remote sensing methods. This data captured metrics of surface water extent and inundated vegetation in the …

School Teachers' Perceptions Of Adolescent Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Vaccination: A Systematic Review, Jihye Choi, Efrat K Gabay, Paula M Cuccaro

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

School nurses are uniquely positioned to educate students about immunizations, including human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, but schools are often without a nurse for different reasons. In lieu of nurses, teachers who closely interact with students and are traditionally well-trusted by parents may be able to communicate about HPV vaccination, alleviating parental vaccine hesitancy. This systematic review explores school teachers' perspectives on adolescent HPV vaccination and factors influencing their willingness to make vaccine recommendations. We searched three databases with appropriate medical subject headings and keywords to identify relevant studies. We reviewed fifteen studies and provided an extensive summary and a comparison …

On Pills And Needles: Students' And Clinical Nursing Faculty's Lived Experience Of A Nursing Students' First Med Pass In The Clinical Setting, Cindy K. Paradiso

Dissertations

Learning and teaching medication administration is a substantial component of prelicensure nursing education. The emphasis of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses initiative is to prepare nursing students to provide safe, quality care. Medication administration, which falls under this initiative, is a challenge for nursing students to learn and for clinical nursing faculty to teach. Consequently, nursing students graduate feeling unprepared to administer medications in their practice. This issue is prevalent and long-standing within nursing education. Most of the research studies conducted, though, are from senior nursing students and nurses. There is little research from the beginner nursing student …

This connectivity enables the collection, transmission, and analysis of patient data, facilitating remote healthcare delivery and enhancing patient outcomes. However, the security and privacy of the data transmitted and stored within IoMT systems remain critical concerns. Blockchain technology offers a promising solution to address these challenges in IoMTs applications. Blockchain provides a decentralized and immutable ledger where transactions, in this case, patient data, are securely recorded and cannot be altered retroactively. This ensures the …

The Breakbeat Poets: Translocal Placemaking In The Contemporary Midwestern Lyric, Andy Oler Mar 2024

The Breakbeat Poets: Translocal Placemaking In The Contemporary Midwestern Lyric, Andy Oler

Publications

In the introduction to the Haymarket Books collection The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop (2015), co-editor Kevin Coval asserts that the anthologized poems are not simply influenced by hip-hop; “these poems are hip-hop.”1 The anthology’s focus on a genre, a cultural phenomenon, might seem like an odd fit for a special issue on placemaking. Its national frame might seem too expansive for the study of regionalism (though there is a history, established by James Shortridge, of conflating the Midwest with the nation).2 But The BreakBeat Poets is also attentive to more precise versions …

Proton radiography is a promising development in proton therapy, and researchers are currently exploring optimal detector materials to construct proton radiography detector arrays. High-density glass scintillators may improve integrating-mode proton radiography detectors by increasing spatial resolution and decreasing detector thickness. We evaluated several new scintillators, activated with europium or terbium, with proton response measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, characterizing relative luminosity, ionization quenching, and proton radiograph spatial resolution. We applied a correction based on Birks's analytical model for ionization quenching. The data demonstrate increased relative luminosity with increased activation element concentration, and higher relative luminosity for samples activated with europium. …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A well-ventilated room is essential to reduce the risk of airborne transmission. As such, the scientific community sets minimum limits on ventilation with the idea that increased ventilation reduces pathogen concentration and thus reduces the risk of transmission. In contrast, the upper limit on ventilation is usually determined by human comfort and the need to reduce energy consumption. While average pathogen concentration decreases with increased ventilation, local concentration depends on multiple factors and may not follow the same trend, especially within short exposure times over large separation distances. Here, we show through experiments and high-fidelity simulations the existence of a …

School of Medicine Publications

We have previously identified a network of higher-order brain regions particularly vulnerable to the ageing process, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. However, it remains unknown what the genetic influences on this fragile brain network are, and whether it can be altered by the most common modifiable risk factors for dementia. Here, in ~40,000 UK Biobank participants, we first show significant genome-wide associations between this brain network and seven genetic clusters implicated in cardiovascular deaths, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and with the two antigens of the XG blood group located in the pseudoautosomal region of the sex chromosomes. We further reveal …

Dynamic Fibrillar Assembly Of Αb-Crystallin Induced By Perturbation Of The Conserved Nt-Ixi Motif Resolved By Cryo-Em, Russell Mcfarland, Steve Reichow Mar 2024

Dynamic Fibrillar Assembly Of Αb-Crystallin Induced By Perturbation Of The Conserved Nt-Ixi Motif Resolved By Cryo-Em, Russell Mcfarland, Steve Reichow

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

αB-crystallin is an archetypical member of the small heat-shock proteins (sHSPs) vital for cellular proteostasis and mitigating protein misfolding diseases. Gaining insights into the principles defining their molecular organization and chaperone function have been hindered by intrinsic dynamic properties and limited high-resolution structural analysis. To disentangle the mechanistic underpinnings of these dynamical properties, we mutated a conserved IXI-motif located within the N-terminal (NT) domain of human αB-crystallin. This resulted in a profound structural transformation, from highly polydispersed caged-like native assemblies into a comparatively well-ordered helical fibril state amenable to high-resolution cryo-EM analysis. The reversible nature of the induced fibrils facilitated …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Heart failure is the prevalent complication of acute myocardial infarction. We aim to identify a biomarker for heart failure post-acute myocardial infarction. This observational study includes 1062 and 1043 patients with acute myocardial infarction in the discovery and validation cohorts, respectively. The outcomes are in-hospital and long-term heart failure events. S100A8/A9 is screened out through proteomic analysis, and elevated circulating S100A8/A9 is independently associated with heart failure in discovery and validation cohorts. Furthermore, the predictive value of S100A8/A9 is superior to the traditional biomarkers, and the addition of S100A8/A9 improves the risk estimation using traditional risk factors. We finally report …
