Individual Behavioral Modeling Across Games Of Strategy, Logan Fields
Individual Behavioral Modeling Across Games Of Strategy, Logan Fields
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An individual’s actions in a particular environment and with specified resources can reveal their decision-making tendencies and patterns, and by analyzing the variations in cognitive traits among individuals, it may be possible to identify trends that can foretell their future behaviors. This can be a powerful tool in various fields including cognitive modeling, player analytics, computer security, and threat detection. Collectible card games are a fruitful test space for studying cognitive differences in decision-making, as they can have clearly defined and replicable environments and large player bases. As such, in this work, I explore the potential of using two virtual …

Barriers: Location, Functionality, And Method Of Access In Childhood Pool/Spa Submersion Incidents, United States, 2000-2017, Alison Miller, Kristina R. Anderson, William D. Ramos
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Drowning is a leading cause of fatality among children in the United States, and residential pools/spas currently account for as much as 80% of these submersion incidents. This study reviewed narrative case reports obtained from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to understand barrier location, type, and functionality as methods of pool/spa access for childhood submersion incidents. Retroactive analysis of 1,523 fatal and non-fatal submersion incidents among children aged 13 years old and younger was conducted using the CPSC in depth investigation dataset from 2000-2017. Narrative descriptions were coded according to the attributes of barrier location, functionality, and …
Perceived And Real Water Competency And Drowning Risk Among Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran, Dawn Garbett, Alan Ovens
Perceived And Real Water Competency And Drowning Risk Among Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran, Dawn Garbett, Alan Ovens
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Traditionally, public understanding of drowning survival has focused on swimming capacity, often measured by how far a person can swim. With respect to the high incidence of adult drowning in high-income countries, using the more inclusive concept of water competency may yield a more comprehensive explanatory framework for understanding the reasons behind these drownings. Any competency base required to survive a drowning situation is dynamic, complex, and multi-faceted. Furthermore, perceptions of risk and capacity to cope with that risk are likely to be pivotal to the avoidance of drowning. Adults’ perceived water competence was measured against their actual water competence …

The Impact Of Strategic, Skill-Focused Intervention On First Grade Students Identified As "At Risk" For Dyslexia: An Improvement Science Dissertation In Practice, Stephanie Clawson
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of this Implementation Science Dissertation in Practice (ISDiP) was to improve student achievement through the use of short, easily implemented, targeted interventions, performed by the classroom teacher. The targeted interventions provided in this study were aligned to specific skill areas, identified by the aimswebPlus Early Literacy Benchmark (ELB), and were evidence-based intervention tools currently in use within the district. The interventions were designed to be delivered by teachers within their literacy instructional blocks, and were 5-15 minutes in length. Teachers were asked to collect data using an aimswebPlus probe every two weeks to track student progress. Teachers then …

Mapping The Jurisprudence Of The Facebook Court, Tao Huang
Buffalo Law Review
The Oversight Board of Facebook (now Meta) has been described as a “court.” Acting like a judicial body, it adjudicates disputes about content moderation decisions of Meta. In some sense, the Board is a great experiment: it enables us, for the first time, to observe, analyze, and assess how private platforms can borrow the model of judicial review to enhance their governance, how the new platform laws have differed from and interacted with the old State laws, and what new principles, rules, and methods will emerge in this process of interaction, accommodation, and innovation. These developments constitute a crucial part …
The Gettysburg Address: Lincoln’S Model Legal Argument, Patrick J. Long
The Gettysburg Address: Lincoln’S Model Legal Argument, Patrick J. Long
Buffalo Law Review
The Gettysburg Address does not appear to be a legal argument. One cannot find a rule anywhere in its few words. Nor does there seem to be any application of a rule to the facts of the case. There is a simple reason for this absence: the law in 1863 was wrong. Lincoln knew that, but he was too much the lawyer to advocate law-breaking. Instead, he used all the skills he had learned from his years in the courtroom to urge his listeners to look beyond the law’s flaws to find the truth of the Declaration’s “self-evident truth.”

Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle
Roesch Library Faculty Publications
University of Dayton Libraries added Shibboleth as an additional form of authentication for its licensed e-resources beginning in summer 2023. A major impetus for pursuing Shibboleth are the upcoming web browser changes that will obfuscate users’ IP addresses, set to occur in later 2023 and 2024 and something which will likely disrupt on-campus IP range access via EZproxy. Implementation of Shibboleth for an initial round of fifty-five e-resource platforms was relatively quick as a result of the University of Dayton’s participation in the InCommon Federation of U.S. higher education institutions, also known as an “authentication federation.” Methods for achieving the …

This study aims to explore the experiences of an African American Male leader in the Bureau of Indian Education. The focus of the study is to understand how I experienced inequitable workplace opportunities that may prohibit me from attaining and advancing into executive leadership roles. A qualitative Autoethnographic approach explores how my lived experiences may help the human resources division recruit and retain “Cultural Outsiders.” It denoted the career trajectory for an African American Male in the Bureau of Indian Education sector to capture the essence of their experiences navigating inequities along the leadership pipeline. To examine my experiences, adaptative …
Using Formative Assessment And Feedback From Student Response Systems (Srs) To Revise Statistics Instruction And Promote Student Growth For All, Grace Pai
Publications and Research
Instructors are increasingly using interactive student response systems (SRS) to foster active learning and deepen student understanding in statistics education. Yet most studies focus on either the benefits of SRS or on how students can receive and use feedback, rather than on how instructors can use formative assessment data to inform instructional revisions for the purpose of enacting inclusive pedagogy to reach more learners. This article draws from a case study of an introductory statistics course at a community college to detail a framework for how an instructor can engage in what I call a reciprocal formative assessment and feedback …

The Effects Of The Mystery Motivator On Attendance In An Undergraduate Population, Hannah Eriksen
The Effects Of The Mystery Motivator On Attendance In An Undergraduate Population, Hannah Eriksen
Honors College Theses
The present study sought to determine the effects of the Mystery Motivator behavioral intervention on attendance in an introductory psychology course. At a medium sized university in the Midwest, one class participated in the study. Ultimately, the Mystery Motivator was ineffective at increasing the percentage of enrolled students that attended class each day, however other notable findings were observed. For example, social validity measures indicated that of the students who voluntarily completed the survey, mostly liked the intervention and would want other classes to implement similar programs. There were several limitations identified in the current study and future research should …

Neonatal Autonomic Regulation As A Predictor Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Very Preterm Infants, Jessica Bradshaw, Christian O'Reilly, Kayla C. Everhart, Elizabeth Dixon, Amy Vinyard, Abbas Tavakoli Drph, Robin B. Dail
Publications
Infants born preterm are at a significantly higher likelihood of having autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with reports of a 10-fold increase in the rate of ASD for very preterm infants (VPT, born <32 weeks gestation) [1] and a 20-fold increase for extremely preterm infants (born <28 weeks gestation) [2]. Yet, the etiological link between preterm birth and ASD remains unknown. Preterm birth and ASD are both associated with neurological differences, notably autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. ANS dysfunction can be measured using abnormal heart rate characteristics (HRCs) and thermal gradients (TGs), and previous research has linked ANS dysfunction to neurodevelopmental impairment and autism-specific outcomes. …28>32>

Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is described as a set of inherited, non-progressive retinal conditions in which the rod pathway is primarily affected, resulting in difficulty adapting to low-light situations due to impaired photoreceptor transmission. Objectives of study was to identify patients with CSNB and explore their lifestyle and the impact of CSNB on their daily routines in selected areas. Total seven families having CSNB, belonging to five villages (Abadi Haji Ismaeel, Sunari wala, Tibba, Shamdin, and Chorasta Mian Khan) of Depalpur, district Okara, were investigated in March 2023. The CSNB prevalence was calculated as 2.528 % in all selected …

In this Nonpayment case, the court granted the tenant's motion to vacate a pro se stipulation entered into during litigation. The stipulation was vacated because the court found that the tenant, who was unrepresented at the time, entered into it improvidently. The petition filed by the landlord was defective as it alleged inconsistent facts regarding the regulatory status of the apartment, which formed a viable defense for the tenant. As a result, the court vacated the stipulation and returned the parties to their original positions, setting aside the judgment and warrant. The proceeding was adjourned for further motions, and the …

Whoever You Want Me To Be: Personality And Incentives, Andrew Mcgee, Peter Mcgee
Whoever You Want Me To Be: Personality And Incentives, Andrew Mcgee, Peter Mcgee
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
What can employers learn from personality tests when applicants have incentives to misrepresent themselves? Using a within-subject, laboratory experiment, we compare personality measures with and without incentives for misrepresentation. Incentivized personality measures are weakly to moderately correlated with non-incentivized measures in all treatments. When test-takers are given a job ad indicating that an extrovert (introvert) is desired, extroversion measures are positively (negatively) correlated with IQ. Among other characteristics, only locus of control appears related to faking on personality measures. Our findings highlight the identification challenges in measuring personality and the potential for correlations between incentivized personality measures and other traits.

Blocking The Dimerization Of Polyglutamine-Expanded Androgen Receptor Protects Cells From Dht-Induced Toxicity By Increasing Ar Turnover, Allison Lisberg, Yuhong Liu, Diane E. Merry
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is a neuromuscular degenerative disease caused by a polyglutamine expansion in the androgen receptor (AR). This mutation causes AR to misfold and aggregate, contributing to toxicity in and degeneration of motor neurons and skeletal muscle. There is currently no effective treatment or cure for this disease. The role of an interdomain interaction between the amino- and carboxyl-termini of AR, termed the N/C interaction, has been previously identified as a component of androgen receptor-induced toxicity in cell and mouse models of SBMA. However, the mechanism by which this interaction contributes to disease pathology is unclear. …

Education is the foundation of culture and the engine of economies; it is an essential part of life. However, it remains inaccessible or unavailable in some parts of developing nations. Moreover, such barriers for girls and women can extend beyond education and into the workplace, and this is a bone of contention based on erroneous beliefs and other factors. Barriers for girls’ and women’s education are debatable in the literature; however, there is a sparsity of literature that focuses on the bridge to the workplace. Therefore, through a focus group study, this study explores the barriers that prohibit the transition …

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
This paper examines the effect of environmental policy stringency (EPS) on audit pricing. By exploiting the exogenous variation in environmental policies across 26 countries, we find that firms in countries with more stringent environmental policies incur lower audit fees. The inverse association is more pronounced in common law countries, in countries with a higher level of public enforcement of regulations and in countries with more investor protection. The lower audit fees are also more prominent for firms that are followed by more analysts and firms that have a greater institutional ownership. Furthermore, we find that firms in countries with strong …
