Exploratory Analysis With Association Rule Mining Algorithms In The Retail Industry, Alaa Amin Hashad, Khaw Khai Wah, Alhamzah Alnoor, Xinying Chew
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Every year the retail sector expands quickly. These industries are becoming more competitive and difficult to operate in due to their expansion. Changing consumer buying habits, a decline in people's spending capacity and an increase in international retailers are a few of the difficulties that must be overcome. In the context of mining frequent item sets, many methods have been proposed to push various kinds of limitations inside the most well-known algorithms. This study presents an exploratory analysis for retail stores that uses market basket analysis as one of the data mining techniques to identify frequent patterns in customer purchases. …

Post-secondary transition is a significant phase in the life of high school students with special needs. Special education teachers play a crucial role in supporting students in this process. This study aims at exploring the perspectives of special education teachers on transitioning high school students with special needs into university. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four special education teachers in Al Ain city in the United Arab Emirates. The teachers were asked questions on four themes: their skills on postsecondary transition, their post-secondary transition planning, the barriers they face during post-secondary transition, and finally the facilitation of smooth post-secondary transition …
Unveiling The Origins Of Source Code Through Authorship Attribution: A Comparative Study Of Ai And Human Coding Patterns, Shamma Humaid Alalawi
Unveiling The Origins Of Source Code Through Authorship Attribution: A Comparative Study Of Ai And Human Coding Patterns, Shamma Humaid Alalawi
Theses
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have been used for source code authorship attribution, which is the process of identifying the original author of a given piece of code. With the advancement of AI technologies like ChatGPT, which can generate code, there is a need to accurately identify whether a piece of code is written by a human or generated by a machine. This is crucial for intellectual property protection, cybersecurity, and software forensics. The main objective of this thesis is to review existing research on source code authorship attribution and conduct several experiments to determine the best AI …
Transformer-Based Deep Learning Model For Sign Language Recognition, Ganzorig Batnasan
Transformer-Based Deep Learning Model For Sign Language Recognition, Ganzorig Batnasan
Theses
Sign language recognition research aims to develop systems and tools that can interpret and translate sign language into text or spoken language. During the past two decades, the challenges faced in this domain are multifaceted. The first and foremost challenge is the complexity of sign language, which includes intricate hand gestures, facial expressions, and body movements. Recognizing and interpreting these components accurately is challenging. The second challenge is variability among different regions and communities, leading to variations in signs and gestures. This variability poses a challenge for developing universal recognition systems.
Limited data is another challenge which makes it difficult …

Old Vs. New: An Experiment On The Efficacy Of Complexity-Focused Reproductive Biology Lectures For Undergraduate Biology Students, Ive N. Muse, Shraddha Patel, Linda Fuselier
Undergraduate Research Events
Undergraduate reproductive biology courses are traditionally taught in a reductive manner, prioritizing a binary understanding of sex which oversimplifies reproductive behaviors and reproductive system development across diverse taxa. Although this binary approach to lessons on reproduction is intended to benefit students in learning foundational human reproductive concepts, it does not teach the most recent research in reproductive biology, which identifies reproductive variation as the norm. We designed and implemented a lesson on reproductive biology informed by the most current and accurate research and compared it to a traditionally taught biology lecture for first year majors. Students who received the experimental …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The April 2021 La Soufrière of St Vincent eruption generated several pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) during the 2 weeks of the crisis, from 9 to 22 April. To support the hazard assessment team during this eruption, numerical simulations were performed in real time and generated rapid scenario-based PDC invasion maps with the two-phase version of the code VolcFlow, which was able to simulate both the concentrated and dilute regime of PDCs. To generate the maps, only the source properties (shape and location) and the initial volume used to generate the PDCs were varied, all other input parameters were kept constant …

My Legacy Document: A Story Told Through A Pedagogical Lens Of Three Landscapes. School, Work, And Faith, Debra Williams
Dissertations
Too often professionals, when answering the question “Who are you?”, resort to listing what they do. Although individuals are gifted, experienced, and qualified, as these persons influence and significantly impact others, one could get lost as a person and be unfulfilled. That’s a problem.
Positioning myself as the study of research, utilizing autoethnography as the chosen methodology, my doctoral journey is chronicled. Three landscapes, school, work, and faith, serve as the areas of emphasis.

Battery Powered Rice Cooker, Mateo Casalino , '24
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
A small low power rice cooker was modified so that its power source came from an external power supply. This allowed the devicet to be remotely operated from a traditional wall socket. A long testing process was carried out to see in-depth information about the current, power, and voltage draw of the rice cooker over an entire cooking and “keep warm” cycle. From this data, the power draw was integrated to find the total energy consumption of the rice cooker and determined what size and type of battery was needed to be purchase. With both the rice cooker and battery …

Left Out In The Cold: Care, Neglect, And Homelessness In Anchorage, Alaska, Natalie C. Fraser , '24
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In the Summers of 2022 and 2023, Anchorage, Alaska closed all low-barrier emergency homeless shelters, forcing approximately 250 people to camp, unsheltered, throughout the city. The city’s actions spawned a crisis as people were left without food, water, or medical services, yet also sparked massive volunteer mobilization of mutual aid. This ethnographic study is based on three months of fieldwork grounded in participant observation at 3rd & Ingra, a large homeless encampment on the edge of downtown Anchorage. I studied three groups of people–policymakers, nonprofit employees, and volunteers–in order to understand how each of these groups conceptualizes homelessness and justifies …

Data visualization is a central component to understanding spatial information in ArcGIS Pro. However, visualization creates an accessibility issue for visually impaired users. While ArcGIS supports two screen readers, JAWS and Microsoft Narrator, their ability to convey spatial relationships is limited to reading textual summaries and textual pop ups of spatial data [1]. This Senior Design project explores using data sonification to map ArcGIS data to piano pitches to create an auditory model of visually displayed map data. This auditory model allowed users to find facts and discover geospatial data trends. Ensuring fair access to information is essential for an …

No, You Can't Just Peek In Their Brain To See Their Future, Alia Barcus
Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research
This paper argues against the use of predictive cognitive neuroscience research in judicial processes. Barcus argues that, because predictive models do not adequately address the “whys” of behavior and are better suited to macro-scale processes rather than individual-level predictions, they can only provide “a crude idea of future behavior” at best and will be bias-laden and inaccurate at worst. Meanwhile, neuroscience brain imaging is a newly-developing field and relies on small-scale studies, a combination that creates little replicability and presents deeply-flawed outcomes when this research is used as a basis for criminal prosecution. Barcus concludes that this scholarship, while holding …

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
When I agreed to participate in a workshop engaging with Philippe Sands’ extraordinary book, The Last Colony, I expected to focus on the dilemmas lawyers confront when considering how to frame the wrongs their clients endured with a view to advancing redress. Inevitably, the choices to be made elevate some dimensions of victims’ experiences while downplaying and potentially sidelining others, however important in their own right. But my plans changed when I reached page forty-one of The Last Colony.

The purpose of this project was to collect evidence-based information regarding sugammadex administration in both standard and selected special populations. Special populations included renal failure, breastfeeding, pregnancy, and pediatrics. The objectives of the project were to collect and present current research to the host facility, define barriers to the use of sugammadex, and assess the participants’ knowledge of sugammadex use in special populations. A guideline for sugammdex administration was created and presented to the host facility through a poster presentation and quick reference guide. A voluntary post-implementation survey was implemented, and the results were recorded, analyzed, and displayed in the …
Shivering In Postpartum Women: Development Of A Perioperative Protocol For Women Undergoing Cesarean Section, Lindsay Dawson, Kara Peters
Shivering In Postpartum Women: Development Of A Perioperative Protocol For Women Undergoing Cesarean Section, Lindsay Dawson, Kara Peters
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
In obstetric patients undergoing a cesarean section, a spinal anesthetic is the most common form of anesthesia (Hannallah, 2016). An intrathecal (or spinal) block is not benign. Postpartum shivering is a potential risk with any neuraxial procedure, with an incidence of 40-80% specifically following a spinal anesthetic (Feng et al., 2021). Patients who experience shivering are at a greater risk for postoperative complications, impaired mother-newborn bonding, and decreased patient satisfaction. Both nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatment options exist for prevention and treatment of postpartum shivering. The objective of this project was to introduce a standardized, evidence-based protocol to decrease the incidence …
Anesthesia Management For The Preeclampsia Or Hypertensive Parturient, Britanie Sumpter
Anesthesia Management For The Preeclampsia Or Hypertensive Parturient, Britanie Sumpter
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Preeclampsia is a placental disease characterized by abnormal maternoplacental blood vessels and placental dysfunction resulting in fetoplacental hypoperfusion and maternal multi-system organ dysfunction (Wang et al., 2019). Expectant management of a hypertensive or preeclamptic parturient includes antihypertensive medications, magnesium sulfate for seizure prophylaxis, and early delivery of the fetus (ACOG, 2020). Neuraxial anesthetic-induced sympathectomy combined with circulating antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate therapy, and intravascular volume depletion in preeclampsia is thought to contribute to exaggerated hypotension.
Persistent refractory hypotension after neuraxial anesthesia in parturients with preeclampsia or hypertension has been an ongoing issue affecting obstetric providers at the host facility. This project …
Nurses' Experience Implementating Weighted Blankets In Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Michael Ragen
Nurses' Experience Implementating Weighted Blankets In Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Michael Ragen
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The complexity of treating sleep difficulties in patients with concurrent psychiatric disorders continues to be a struggle for the medical community. The mechanism that causes psychiatric disorders can induce insomnia or hypersomnia (Khurshid, 2018). There is also a growing interest in disturbed sleep ability to induce psychiatric episodes (Verkhratsky et al., 2020). This classic “Chicken or Egg Scenario” meets the modern focus on creating the best outcome for patients with the least medication, spurring interest in the holistic management of sleep disorders. The literature has little information on the use of weighted modalities for sleep management and anxiety in an …
Identifying And Improving Developmental Delays In Children Within Central America, Alyssa Blake
Identifying And Improving Developmental Delays In Children Within Central America, Alyssa Blake
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Roughly 40% of children living in low-income countries worldwide are at an increased risk of not reaching developmental milestones. Many of these children are at risk due to lack of resources, quality healthcare, and proper developmental screenings. Short-term medical mission trips (STMMs) aim to improve the health of those residing in developing countries. However, although the U.S. does carry out many STMMs to developing countries within Central America to help improve health outcomes, pediatric developmental screenings are often not a part of routine health visits during these STMMs. This may be due to providers having a general lack of experience …

Implementation Of Electronically Integrated Pediatric Screening Templates, Kayla Seed
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Evidence-based clinic guidelines improve patient outcomes by providing clinicians with research-based recommendations, and when combined with the electronic health record (EHR), clinicians have the potential to improve their documentation and reduce the time it takes to document a patient encounter. A pediatric clinic in the metro-east area of Southern Illinois lacked EHR templates during patient encounters that focused on depression, anxiety, ADHD, and concussion screening. Templates embedded in the EHR were created in a SOAP note format to aid the clinicians during patient encounters and aid in documentation. Clinicians were asked to utilize the templates over a 6-week period. The …

The "Free White Person" Clause Of The Naturalization Act Of 1790 As Super-Statute, Gabriel J. Chin, Paul Finkelman
William & Mary Law Review
A body of legal scholarship persuasively contends that some judicial decisions are so important that they should be considered part of the canon of constitutional law including, unquestionably, Marbury v. Madison and Brown v. Board of Education. Some decisions, while blunders, were nevertheless profoundly influential in undermining justice and the public good. Scholars call cases such as Dred Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson the anticanon. Recognizing the contemporary centrality of statutes, Professors William Eskridge and John Ferejohn propose that certain federal laws should be recognized as part of legal canon because of their extraordinary influence and duration. These …

Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Over the past several decades, Law & Economics has established itself as one of the most well-known branches of interdisciplinary legal scholarship. The tools of L&E have been applied to a wide range of legal issues and have even been brought to bear on Critical Race Theory in an attempt to address some of CRT’s perceived shortcomings. This Article seeks to reverse this dynamic of influence by applying CRT and related critical perspectives to the field of economics. We call our approach Abolition Economics. By embracing the abolitionist ethos of “dismantle, change, and build,” we seek to break strict …
