Oplan 1003v—Operation Iraqi Freedom From A Planner’S Perspective, Don Thieme

Naval War College Review

Unlike the political decision to invade Iraq in 2003 and the violent insurgency that followed, the operational planning that went into the invasion has not been studied granularly. This history of that planning effort offers rich insight both for historians and for planners who may be called on to plan another major conventional combined-arms operation in the future.

Effect Of Medium On Epigenetics In Fertilized And Cloned Embryos, Ethan Loertscher Apr 2024

Effect Of Medium On Epigenetics In Fertilized And Cloned Embryos, Ethan Loertscher

Student Research Symposium

  • The metabolic pathways that oocytes and embryos take during early development have an important effect on epigenetic events. This leads to the question of whether different cultures affect epigenetics.
  • There are some concerns that serum-containing mediums may be correlated with poor health outcomes.
  • Acetylation of lysine 9 on histone 3 is associated with chromatin configurations. The intensity of H3K9ac is much lower in cloned embryos (somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT)) than what is seen in normal embryos
  • This study was aiming to compare IVF and SCNT embryos cultured in a medium containing serum and a medium …

New Testing Capabilities Of The Missouri University Of Science And Technology Supersonic Wind Tunnel, Joshua Gary, Davide Vigano

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

The development of non-intrusive, laser-based diagnostic techniques has significantly enhanced supersonic experimental aerodynamics, enabling the measurement of many parameters in complex flow fields. Among these techniques, Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry, capable of measuring 3 components of velocity in 3-dimensional volumes, is now available at the Aerodynamics Research Laboratory of the Missouri University of Science and Technology. To integrate this new system into the university's supersonic wind tunnel, a redesigned nozzle, test section, and diffuser have been implemented. The upgraded modular test section features 4 large ports which can be configured with windows for optical diagnostics or lead plates for model …

Symposium: Gender, Health & The Constitution: On The Constitutional Requirement For Adequate Prenatal Care Post-Dobbs, Ainslee Johnson-Brown Apr 2024

Symposium: Gender, Health & The Constitution: On The Constitutional Requirement For Adequate Prenatal Care Post-Dobbs, Ainslee Johnson-Brown

ConLawNOW

This Essay argues that state abortion statutes codifying government interests in the health and welfare of the unborn trigger a constitutional right to prenatal care where adequate medical care is constitutionally required in the penal system. It explores the healthcare mandates required by the U.S. Constitution in the era before the passage of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, specifically looking at abortion access and prenatal provisions in the penological system. It then dissects abortion-related legislation passed by various states in the wake of Dobbs—emphasizing language within the legislative findings that could trigger a constitutional obligation for prenatal …

Voltage Scaled Low Power Dnn Accelerator Design On Reconfigurable Platform, Rourab Paul, Sreetama Sarkar, Suman Sau, Sanghamitra Roy, Koushik Chakraborty, Amlan Chakrabarti

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The exponential emergence of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) has accelerated research on hardware implementation of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Among all DNN processors, domain-specific architectures such as Google’s Tensor Processor Unit (TPU) have outperformed conventional GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and CPUs (Central Processing Units). However, implementing low-power TPUs in reconfigurable hardware remains a challenge in this field. Voltage scaling, a popular approach for energy savings, can be challenging in FPGAs, as it may lead to timing failures if not implemented appropriately. This work presents an ultra-low-power FPGA implementation of a TPU for edge applications. We divide the systolic array of …

Glacial Resource Analysis – Castner Glacier, Alaska, Logan Erichsen Apr 2024

Glacial Resource Analysis – Castner Glacier, Alaska, Logan Erichsen

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Glaciers cover much of the 49th U.S. state of Alaska. While many of these are deep blues, just as many are “rock” glaciers which means the glacier is covered in sediment. This sediment can be transported many miles through the mountain ranges. With the current climate melting these glaciers they are receding. Sediment and rock samples can now be safely collected from different locations where glaciers have released sediment that was locked in the ice for an untold number of years. Much of the USGS data comes from the 1940’s through 1960’s due to the size and remoteness of Alaska. …

Volcanic Ash In Lincoln County, Kansas, Logan Erichsen Apr 2024

Volcanic Ash In Lincoln County, Kansas, Logan Erichsen

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This report outlines the analysis of Pearlette volcanic ash in Lincoln County Kansas. Both field and lab methods were used to compile this report. Fort Hays State University alumni Dr. Ron Whitmer allowed use of his property on which the ash is found. Auguring was utilized as the main form of field work which allowed mapping of the subsurface ash layer. The ash was analyzed by UMKC using their scanning electron microscope (SEM). At Fort Hays, the SEM reports were compared to thin sections of the ash using plane and cross polarized light in petrographic microscopes. The ash is comprised …

Ordinal-level Biomass of Insects Collected On and Off Prairie Dog Colonies

Colby Cook, Chad Zerr, and Lorelei Patrick

Recent work has shown that bats in Colorado and Kansas are more active over prairie dog colonies. It is hypothesized that the reason for this is increased abundance and richness of insects found on colonies versus off colonies. Sampling from 2022 indicated that insect biomass was not different between location types, but suggested that the relative abundance of insect orders may differ. Additional insect sampling was conducted in 2023. Light traps were deployed on the same nights, one on a prairie dog …

Illicit Drug Usage And Juvenile Justice System Involvement, Selene Chavez Saucedo, April Terry Apr 2024

Illicit Drug Usage And Juvenile Justice System Involvement, Selene Chavez Saucedo, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Drug usage is strongly associated with significant social and psychological problems for youth, including juvenile justice system involvement. Research shows that approximately 4.5 million youth, ages 12-17, have used an illicit drug in the past year. Youth drug usage is related to juvenile justice system involvement. In fact, substance abuse is a top eight risk factor for juvenile offending and reoffending. Once youth are involved within the judicial system, the correctional system must then assume the responsibility of intervening in the youth cycle of drugs and delinquent behavior. Unfortunately, research shows that substance use treatment is available only sporadically for …
