Academic Detailing As A Health Information Technology Implementation Method: Supporting The Design And Implementation Of An Emergency Department-Based Clinical Decision Support Tool To Prevent Future Falls, Hanna J Barton, Apoorva Maru, Margaret A Leaf, Daniel J Hekman, Douglas A Wiegmann, Manish N Shah, Brian W Patterson

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision support (CDS) tools that incorporate machine learning-derived content have the potential to transform clinical care by augmenting clinicians' expertise. To realize this potential, such tools must be designed to fit the dynamic work systems of the clinicians who use them. We propose the use of academic detailing-personal visits to clinicians by an expert in a specific health IT tool-as a method for both ensuring the correct understanding of that tool and its evidence base and identifying factors influencing the tool's implementation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess academic detailing as a method for simultaneously ensuring the correct …

The Association Of Prenatal Fine Particulate Matter (Pm2.5) Airway Exposure And Pulmonary Function Among Preschool Children: The Mediation Effect Of Dna Methylation At Birth And Metabolites, Nutrients, And Toxins In Cord Blood, Rui Luo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Prenatal exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) has been linked to altered lung function and respiratory diseases. However, the conclusions of previous studies are controversial. To our knowledge, no study examined whether DNA methylation (DNAm), metabolites, nutrients, and toxins (MNTs) at birth mediate the association between prenatal PM2.5 exposure with multiple respiratory outcomes. This dissertation includes three carefully designed studies focusing on prenatal PM2.5 exposure, and its association with respiratory outcomes. Data obtained from three generation of Isle of Wight birth cohort (IOWBC) were utilized. In the first study, I examined the …

Psychometric Analysis Of The Geses, Anthony Robert Eldridge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Research suggests a surge in the number of students attending a college or university. However, whether first-generation students complete their degree program remains a problem. Approximately thirty-three percent of first-generation students who began postsecondary education in 2003–04 left postsecondary education without earning a postsecondary credential. The current study investigated the psychometric properties of a revised version of a measure of academic, research, and social self-efficacy. Specifically, a sample of 403 Mturk participants ’completed the Graduate Education Self-Efficacy Scale (GESES). There were three primary research questions: 1) For a revised version of the GESES, is the original three-factor structure supported, 2) …

Background Constipation is overrepresented in people with intellectual disabilities. Around 40% of people with intellectual disabilities who died prematurely were prescribed laxatives. A quarter of people with intellectual disabilities are said to be on laxatives. There are concerns that prescribing is not always effective and appropriate. There are currently no prescribing guidelines specific to this population. Aims To develop guidelines to support clinicians with their decision-making when prescribing laxatives to people with intellectual disabilities. Method A modified Delphi methodology, the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method, was used. Step 1 comprised development of a bespoke six-item, open-ended questionnaire from background literature and its …

“I Thought I Knew”: Teaching Graduate Students New Ways Of Understanding Meanings Of Diverse Social Identities, Maria S. Johnson Apr 2024

“I Thought I Knew”: Teaching Graduate Students New Ways Of Understanding Meanings Of Diverse Social Identities, Maria S. Johnson

Feminist Pedagogy

Instructors should not assume that graduate students understand meanings of terms for various social identities. In this article, I highlight a teaching activity I created titled, “What’s in a name?” that requires graduate students to research historical and contemporary uses of various racial, ethnic, gender, sexuality, and immigration terms. The assignment helps graduate students develop inclusive vocabulary and deepen their understanding of their positionality. It also supports braver classroom contexts for students and instructors. The assignment is best facilitated by instructors informed of diverse social identities, open to difficult conversations, and aware of the influence of their own social identities …

Input And Output In An English Classroom: A Young Learner Corpus Of English (Yolecore), Thomas Zapounidis, Marina Mattheoudakis Apr 2024

Input And Output In An English Classroom: A Young Learner Corpus Of English (Yolecore), Thomas Zapounidis, Marina Mattheoudakis

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

This article highlights the need for a new type of corpus that will combine both a learner and a pedagogic corpus. The need for such a type of corpus is underlined by the interaction between input and output and the expected impact of the former on the latter within all instructional settings. Such a corpus will allow us to collect data, including teacher language, learner language, coursebook content, etc. and relate it to students’ output at specific points in time. Our study aims to present and describe the Young Learner Corpus of English (henceforth,YoLeCorE), which is an …

Using Simulation And Experiments To Optimize Strength And Ductility In Metals Processed By Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment, Nathan Roberts Apr 2024

Using Simulation And Experiments To Optimize Strength And Ductility In Metals Processed By Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment, Nathan Roberts

Liberty University Research Week

Precision and Energy Controlled Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment (PECSMAT) is a novel technique for strengthening metal parts by impacting the surface, which causes residual stresses to increase in the material and thereby increases the strength of the part. Ductility, which is the degree to which a material will permanently deform before breaking, will decrease as a part is hardened and the strength increases. This tradeoff is undesirable as retaining both high strength and ductility will allow parts to be in service longer before the part fails. This research aims to optimize the impact energy and location on a metal part …

Validation Of Ansys Fluent For Direct Numerical Simulation Of Channel Flow, Reid Prichard Apr 2024

Validation Of Ansys Fluent For Direct Numerical Simulation Of Channel Flow, Reid Prichard

Liberty University Research Week

Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) is an invaluable tool for visualizing turbulent structures down to the smallest length scales. Because of the large element count necessary to resolve these small structures, DNS is typically performed using high-order spectral methods. While these methods greatly ease the computational burden, they preclude the use of unstructured meshes, which are often a necessity to model complex geometry. Finite-volume methods enable the use of unstructured meshes at great computational cost. Existing literature has validated DNS using various finite-volume solvers, but the commercial solver ANSYS Fluent remains unvalidated. We demonstrate preliminary attempts to validate DNS of a …

Using Molecular Data To Identify Lungless Salamander Kinds, Kayla Natelborg, Adelyn C. Fairley, Timothy R. Brophy Apr 2024

Using Molecular Data To Identify Lungless Salamander Kinds, Kayla Natelborg, Adelyn C. Fairley, Timothy R. Brophy

Liberty University Research Week

Baraminology is the study of God’s created kinds as described in Genesis 1. Holobaramins are scientific approximations of these kinds, identified by building up monobaramins (smaller, continuous groups of organisms) and dividing apobaramins (larger, discontinuous groups of organisms). The lungless salamander family (Caudata: Plethodontidae), composed of over 500 species in 29 genera, have been grouped together by herpetologists for almost 200 years. Our previous research indicates that lungless salamander holobaramin(s) are found somewhere between the genus and family levels. The goal of this study is to further investigate the baraminology of these organisms by reanalyzing a prominent study of lungless …

Unearthing The Ancient Metropolis: Perth Amboy's Clark-Watson Site, Richard F. Veit Apr 2024

Unearthing The Ancient Metropolis: Perth Amboy's Clark-Watson Site, Richard F. Veit

Northeast Historical Archaeology

This Clark-Watson Site in Perth Amboy, New Jersey is one of the richest early colonial sites in the state. It is named for two early property owners: Benjamin Clark a Scottish stationer and bookseller who moved to New Jersey in 1683 and John Watson (1685-1768), a noted 18th-century artist. Excavations at the site by William Pavlovsky unearthed an extraordinary collection of colonial artifacts. The archaeological assemblage provides an unparalleled glimpse into the material life of settlers in Perth Amboy during a period when the city aspired to be a center of international trade and was competing directly and …

A Material History Of The Early Eighteenth-Century Cod Fishery In Canso, Nova Scotia, Adrian Lk Morrison Apr 2024

A Material History Of The Early Eighteenth-Century Cod Fishery In Canso, Nova Scotia, Adrian Lk Morrison

Northeast Historical Archaeology

In the early eighteenth century, Canso, Nova Scotia housed an influential Anglo-American fishing and trading community with far-reaching connections across Europe and the Americas. The islands were inhabited by a small permanent population joined each year by hundreds of migratory workers who established seasonal operations along their shores. Despite high hopes for long-term development, success would be short lived. Canso was a volatile space: the islands were contested territory and existed within a tense and turbulent frontier. The settlement was attacked multiple times and was destroyed in 1744. This paper draws upon new research and previous archaeological studies to discuss …

The Avalon Historic Petroglyphs Project: Investigating Historic Graffiti And Petroglyphs On Newfoundland’S Eastern Avalon Peninsula, Barry C. Gaulton, Bryn Tapper, Duncan Williams, Donna Teasdale Apr 2024

The Avalon Historic Petroglyphs Project: Investigating Historic Graffiti And Petroglyphs On Newfoundland’S Eastern Avalon Peninsula, Barry C. Gaulton, Bryn Tapper, Duncan Williams, Donna Teasdale

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula contains many examples of petroglyphs, historic graffiti and inscriptions/engravings dating from the 17th to 20th centuries. This paper highlights the sites of Kingman’s Cove (CfAf-25) and Brigus South (CgAf-21), the computational photography and conservation techniques used in their recording, and current interpretations on who made them, why, when, and what they represent. The results show the broad potential of historic inscriptions for understanding the movements of people who are often poorly represented in the documentary record, the importance of peripheral landscapes and features as foci for self-expression, place-making and remembrance, and the need for innovative methodologies to …

The Looking Glass Self In Film: The Effects Of A Positive Self Image, Rebecca Kicinski Apr 2024

The Looking Glass Self In Film: The Effects Of A Positive Self Image, Rebecca Kicinski

Liberty University Research Week

The theory of the Looking Glass Self suggests that an individual’s self image is socially constructed through interactions with others. Numerous studies support this theory, finding the significance of self image in individual lives as well as the impact that people, or outsiders, around the individuals can have on their self image. Generation Z in particular struggles to maintain a positive self image in the face of others. A close textual analysis of the films It’s a Wonderful Life (1947) and Hugo (2011) will show clearly that the Looking Glass Self is not only relevant despite its age, but also …

"'What The Suffering Was Like': Digital Affect In The Act Up Oral History Project, Margaret Sullivan Apr 2024

"'What The Suffering Was Like': Digital Affect In The Act Up Oral History Project, Margaret Sullivan

Remembrance: A Journal of Queer Culture, Information, and Preservation

This article considers The ACT UP Oral History Project as an affective site that renders visible the impact of loss and suffering. Focusing on the archive’s filmic and computer-mediated interviews, and placing both in conversation with memory and queer identity studies, I demonstrate that the Oral History Project, as a discursive space, invites its audience into a felt physical contact with grief, loss, anger, and rage.

“Don’T Call On Me!”: Mediating Preservice Elementary Teachers’ Mathematics Anxiety In A Problem-Based Classroom, Christina Koehne, Wenyen Huang, Nataly Chesky

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

This study aims to understand the ways in which problem-based teaching in a mathematics content course can alleviate pre-service elementary school teachers' mathematics anxiety. The significance of this work is to help increase the content and pedagogical knowledge of mathematics education, as outlined in STEM policies. Using a mixed method approach, the teachers-researchers explore what methods, procedures, and other perhaps unknown variables, helped pre-service elementary teachers decrease their mathematics anxiety during two mathematics content courses. The findings illuminate five major themes the authors discuss, which are illustrated by rich descriptions of students’ narratives and interviews. Given the importance of mathematics …

Economics Of Artificial Insemination In Cattle, Marisa Brown, Shelby French, Vijay Subramaniam Apr 2024

Economics Of Artificial Insemination In Cattle, Marisa Brown, Shelby French, Vijay Subramaniam

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Artificial insemination (Al) is the collection of semen from a male animal and breeding a female animal with the collected semen. AI has a long renowned history, dating back all the way to 1780, and continues to evolve every day. Artificial insemination allows farmers to inseminate their cattle efficiently, farmers can integrate DNA variation and desired genetics in livestock, and acts as a safe way to impregnate cattle by not having the risk of a live bull being used. It can be observed within multiple studies that when looking at smaller herds it can actually be more cost efficient to …

A Protocol To Reduce Falls Associated With Setting Bed Alarms: A Quality Improvement Project, Kristina Vaughn, Alyndra Meade, Ella White, Autumn Cole, Jaylyn Whaley, Suzi White Apr 2024

A Protocol To Reduce Falls Associated With Setting Bed Alarms: A Quality Improvement Project, Kristina Vaughn, Alyndra Meade, Ella White, Autumn Cole, Jaylyn Whaley, Suzi White

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Inappropriate and noncompliance with setting bed alarms can lead to an increased risk of falls in a large urban teaching hospital. In return, this can lead to injury and an increased cost for patients if they must have a longer stay in the hospital due to potential injuries. The main problem is healthcare employees may not be compliant in ensuring bed alarms are set and in the appropriate zone which can stem from forgetfulness or that doing so is a nuisance. Another factor that plays a role in noncompliance is alarm fatigue. The constant beeping of bed alarms can be …
