Reflecting Deeply: Why A Philosophy Of Reference Services Should Direct Every Ri, Bethany Radcliffe, Garrett Trott
Reflecting Deeply: Why A Philosophy Of Reference Services Should Direct Every Ri, Bethany Radcliffe, Garrett Trott
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article distinguishes between a philosophy and a theory of reference services. Philosophy explores why practitioners do something, whereas theory explores the actual practice without necessarily reflecting on the why behind it. The authors argue that a personal philosophy of reference services is needed, as librarians’ values ultimately drive the reference services they provide. Much of the current literature on this topic explores theories of reference services as opposed to the philosophies behind them. The authors first examine the gap in the LIS literature pertaining to a philosophy of reference services. They then define three premises upon which they base …

Background Between 2020 and 2022, eight calves in a Nebraska herd (composite Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh) displayed exercise intolerance during forced activity. In some cases, the calves collapsed and did not recover. Available sire pedigrees contained a paternal ancestor within 2–4 generations in all affected calves. Pedigrees of the calves’ dams were unavailable, however, the cows were ranch-raised and retained from prior breeding seasons, where bulls used for breeding occasionally had a common ancestor. Therefore, it was hypothesized that a de novo autosomal recessive variant was causative of exercise intolerance in these calves.
Results A genome-wide association analysis utilizing SNP …

This anthology discusses cheating as an idea, and its effects in a variety of different social spaces, digital and physical. We talk about how and why cheating occurs, as well as what is done to prevent it. Additionally, we discuss what more can be done to mitigate the effects that cheating has as it becomes more widespread due to advances in technology. The first topic discussed is how the architecture of educational institutions can affect cheating in school. The next topic discusses the variety of ways that players in casual and competitive eSports cheat, and what is done to prevent …
Beyond Patents: Incentive Strategies For Ocean Plastic Remediation Technologies, Jacob Stotser
Beyond Patents: Incentive Strategies For Ocean Plastic Remediation Technologies, Jacob Stotser
Duke Law & Technology Review
With a garbage truck’s worth of plastic being dumped in the ocean each minute, there is a dire need for effective technological solutions aimed at mitigating the marine plastic pollution problem. However, the reliance of the U.S. patent system on market demand to incentivize this type of innovation has proven insufficient in light of the peculiarities of “green” technologies. To remedy this, this article proposes a multi-faceted incentivization approach that looks beyond the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to stimulate the development of remediation technologies through comprehensive regulatory interventions, the establishment of prize funds and other alternative incentive mechanisms, and …

Georgia Ghosts: History, Folklore, And The Roots Of The Southern Gothic, Katherine M. Mcdowell
Georgia Ghosts: History, Folklore, And The Roots Of The Southern Gothic, Katherine M. Mcdowell
Master's Projects
There is something quintessentially human about ghost stories, yet particular regions tend to be more powerfully associated with haunted folktales than others. One of the regions is the southeastern United States. In fact, these oral traditions appear to have influenced the area's best-known literary subgenre: the Southern Gothic.
Why is the South considered haunted? Are there particular qualities in historical events that make them more likely to engender ghost stories? What makes the South's folkloric spirits so powerful that they appear even in modern literature? Most of all, what connects the region's history and folklore with the Southern Gothic? By …

Depression is heritable, differs by sex, and has environmental risk factors such as cigarette smoking. However, the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on depression through cigarette smoking and the role of sex is unclear. In order to examine the association of SNPs with depression and smoking in the UK Biobank with replication in the COPDGene study, we used counterfactual-based mediation analysis to test the indirect or mediated effect of SNPs on broad depression through the log of pack-years of cigarette smoking, adjusting for age, sex, current smoking status, and genetic ancestry (via principal components). In secondary analyses, we adjusted …
Hypocritical Management Studies, Khang Lê
Hypocritical Management Studies, Khang Lê
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
The assertion “critical management studies is dead. It died a long time ago” (O’Doherty and Jones, 2005, p. 6) has aged poorly. Critical Management Studies lives on, stronger than ever. The term itself even gets title case capitalization. Responding to the call to “investigate the production of theories that pose as radical without challenging the status quo”, I offer my critique of Critical Management Studies. Critical Management Studies provides critical perspectives on established management theories and practices. It aims to encourage micro-emancipations and propose radical alternatives for organizational life. However, I argue that, in the current backdrop of neoliberal academia, …
The Drivers Of Academic Novelty In Digital Capitalism: Job Insecurity, Mental Illness And Time Poverty, Adalberto Fernandes
The Drivers Of Academic Novelty In Digital Capitalism: Job Insecurity, Mental Illness And Time Poverty, Adalberto Fernandes
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
The present-day digital capitalist academy increases novel academic results by leveraging factors such as precarious academic employment, time poverty, and mental illness. This paradigm reveals a confluence that turns seemingly negative aspects into productive elements. The consequence of this hypothesis is that by enhancing work, time and mental health conditions, there may be a reduction in the number of novelties, with an enhancement of academic's role as producers of truth.

The Contradiction Between Use-Value And Exchange-Value: Ecology, Imperialism, And The Telos Of Production, Larry Alan Busk, Elizabeth Portella
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This article elaborates and defends a critique of capitalism which, despite its appearance in various bodies of work, has not been named or systematically differentiated. The critique locates a contradiction between production for use-value and production for exchange-value, or a contradiction in what we call “the telos of production.” While maintaining that it has some basis in Marx’s work, we defend this model as preferable to the critique of capitalism based strictly on the exploitation of labor (which we call the “exploitation-exclusive critique”). We attempt to show this by applying the two approaches to the empirical realities of the ecological …

Neuroprotection Through Positioning Neonates In The Critical Care Setting, Kaleigh Schofield
Neuroprotection Through Positioning Neonates In The Critical Care Setting, Kaleigh Schofield
Academic Festival
On the neonatal intensive care unit at Greenwich, new positioners, known as the dandelions, allow for nurses to reposition patients in an easier manner. Most nurses had expressed that they were used to using rolled blankets or towels as a way to position in the past; therefore, the nurses expressed some confusion on the importance of these new positioners and how they can provide better support for neurological development. It is important to educate the unit nurses on the importance of positioning with the dandelion in order to support the infants neurologically as well as physically.

I lived a great childhood, and I mean really great. I had a seemingly stable home life and the world was full of colors and endless possibilities. Then suddenly, on my twentieth birthday, I found myself locked in a psych ward not wanting to be alive. Imagine growing up in a world full of colors. Everything is bright and happy and you live in a house full of love, safety, and security. Then, once you hit early adulthood, the world goes gray.
Sometimes, you cannot always describe why you feel a certain way or why things are the way that …

The Effects Of Semantic Priming On Cultural Vs. Non-Cultural Words In Individuals With Semantic Dementia, Lila Armstrong, Morgan Craig, Erica Santangeli, Kathleen Vergnolle
Academic Festival
Semantic dementia (SD) is a frontal lobe dementia variant characterized by poor semantic memory and impairments in lexical access (Paplikar et al., 2022, Roelofs, 2023). It has been hypothesized that cultural words may be easier to retrieve from memory than non-cultural words because they include personal significance. This project proposes a semantic priming study to evaluate the speed and accuracy of lexical access between cultural and non-cultural words in individuals with SD. Participants will be presented with a word-picture pair and then a target picture. The target picture will be 1) culturally significant or 2) culturally neutral. The word-picture pair …

With the prevalence of global issues, the opportunity for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to make a meaningful impact has never been greater. Additionally, with the changing demands of markets, the potential benefit to corporations from engaging in CSR has considerably increased. The power and resources of corporations have developed to a level that facilitates significant contribution to issues that pervade society and the environment. This paper will explore how quality CSR practices not only improve the world but also significantly benefit the corporation itself. It will also closely examine how corporations can best structure their governance to promote success, and …
Patterns Of Predation In A Declining Asian Shore Crab Population At A Marsh Restoration Site, Keith Mcgann
Patterns Of Predation In A Declining Asian Shore Crab Population At A Marsh Restoration Site, Keith Mcgann
Academic Festival
Hemigrapsus sanguineus (Asian shore crab) is an invasive crustacean that often outcompetes established species on the eastern seaboard and impacts biodiversity. Although it can have detrimental effects, the H. sanguineus population at a marsh restoration site at Stratford Point, Connecticut has declined since 2019. Understanding predation dynamics on Asian shore crabs can provide insights into the mechanisms driving this decline. We conducted a mark-recapture study to estimate H. sanguineus population size at Stratford Point as part of ongoing monitoring, yielding an estimated 33,913 crabs at the site in 2023, a 25% decline from 2022. A tethering experiment confirmed that marking …

The Use Of Rapid Motor Imitation Antecedent Training For Increasing Spoken Phonology In Minimally Speaking Autistic Preschoolers, Bethany Mitros, Biana Blasi, Kianna Bergin, Taylor Mason
Academic Festival
Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) fail to acquire spoken language (Tager-Flusberg & Kasari, 2013) with spoken language predicting positive outcomes (Tager-Flusberg, 2016). Thus, the more evidence-based interventions available to clinicians, the more likely these children will acquire language. This project proposes to evaluate the effectiveness of Rapid Motor Imitation Antecedent Training (RMIA) for improving speech production in preschoolers with ASD. Twenty children, 3-4 years, diagnosed with ASD and exhibiting restricted spoken phonemic repertoires, will be recruited from early intervention programs. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an immediate treatment group or a delayed treatment group. The delayed …

Academic Festival
The purpose of this study is to assess the use of Chlorhexidine Antiseptic Solution to decrease the incidence of CAUTIs within hospitalized patients in comparison to routine cleaning techniques. Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections account for 30% of all hospital acquired infections which can lead to up to $450 million in additional costs in the US yearly CAUTIs may also lead to increased hospital stay lengths, discomfort, and rates of mortality (AHRQ, 2015). Therefore, this quality improvement research compares both a quantitative study and a meta-analysis of the the use of Chlorhexidine.
Calling-In Vs. Calling-Out: Style Preferences For Confronting Prejudice, Michele Chu, Nick Granja, Casey Russell
Calling-In Vs. Calling-Out: Style Preferences For Confronting Prejudice, Michele Chu, Nick Granja, Casey Russell
Academic Festival
Confronting prejudice—directly challenging biased comments and behaviors—is an effective strategy for reducing prejudiced attitudes and instances of stereotyping. However, it remains unclear how people feel about different confrontation styles and which tactics are most comfortable and preferred. In this study, we compared two confrontation styles: “calling-out,” which aims to shame and/or correct the offender, and “calling-in,” which aims to understand and educate the offender. We recruited 400 SHU students (75.5% White, 82.3% women). Participants were randomly assigned to read one of six scenarios (covering ableism, sexism, ethnic bias, ageism, racism/classism, or homophobia), imagining a friend making a biased comment that …
The Effect Of Dance Styles On Heart Rate, Katie Zimmer, Danielle Ahern
The Effect Of Dance Styles On Heart Rate, Katie Zimmer, Danielle Ahern
Academic Festival
Dance is a highly aerobic form of exercise that can play a large role in heart health. Typically, the greater the tempo of a dance style, the more it will impact heart rate.1 Hip-hop and jazz are very fast and upbeat, likely to increase heart rate the most. Contemporary can be either fast or slow depending on the choreographer. Ballet can also be fast or slow, but is extremely demanding on the body, indicating that heart rate could be greatly increased. The purpose of this experiment was to determine which styles of dance increase heart rate the most in experienced …

Reappraisal Vs. Rumination: Emotion Regulation Shapes Reactions To Prejudice Confrontation, Sophia Rogers
Academic Festival
When called out for prejudiced behavior, people exhibit varied emotional and behavioral reactions. Emotions like guilt or empathy can drive adaptive behavioral responses like self-correction, while anger or resentment can provoke maladaptive responses, such as hostility and dismissiveness. This research explored how naturally occurring emotion regulation strategies, like cognitive reappraisal and rumination, influence these emotional and behavioral reactions. We asked 250 U.S. adults to recall a time when they had acted offensively and were consequently confronted for it. We then recorded their emotion regulation strategies and resultant responses. Our findings revealed that reappraisal led to self-correction by intensifying guilt and …

In this poster, we will first examine polynomial interpolation. Interpolation allows us to construct a polynomial through a given set of data points. Interpolation is also used to develop the Newton-Cotes formulas, which are methods for numerical integration, or quadrature, that can approximate more complicated definite integrals. But, there is a way to arrive at even more precise approximations, and we will discover this through a discussion of Gaussian Quadrature.
