Climate Insurance - Using Weather Data And Ai To Manage Agricultural Risk In Developing Countries, Scott A. Denning May 2024

Climate Insurance - Using Weather Data And Ai To Manage Agricultural Risk In Developing Countries, Scott A. Denning

All Theses

Weather index-based crop insurance has promised to be a lifeline for low-income farmers in developing countries. However, high-basis risk, high administration costs, and low willingness to pay have caused the demise of many pilot programs. Building onto the principles of index insurance we propose Climate Insurance, a new form of insurance based on predictive crop models that overcomes most of the primary objections of index insurance while achieving its goals of low administration costs, greatly reduced adverse selection, and the elimination of moral hazard. The crop model presented herein utilizes an artificial neural network to predict county- level yield per …

Low-Resource Icd Coding Of Discharge Summaries, Ashton Williamson May 2024

Low-Resource Icd Coding Of Discharge Summaries, Ashton Williamson

All Theses

Medical coding is the process by which standardized medical codes are assigned to patient health records. This is a complex and challenging task that typically requires an expert human coder to review health records and assign codes from a classification system based on a standard set of rules. Considering the downstream use of these codes in statistical analysis, billing, and patient care, improving the accuracy and efficiency of the medical coding process through automation could have a far-reaching impact on the healthcare domain. Since health records typically consist of a large proportion of free-text documents, this problem has traditionally been …

All Theses

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is a procedure that aims to fix irreversible rotator cuff damage and degenerative glenohumeral joint diseases that hinder arm abduction. One major complication of RTSA is glenoid baseplate failure resulting from increased movement at the bone-baseplate interface. This study examined 36, 12 PCF composite Sawbones® scapulae. The specimens were split equally into 6 study groups, each having different implant configurations with varying baseplate lateralization and central screws or posts. Each specimen was subjected to cyclic shear loading and failure testing on an Instron to determine implant micromotion and load values.

After testing, ANOVA tests were …

Filling In The Gaps: A Service Ecosystem Perspective On Purchase Groups As Interstitial Markets, Aditya Gupta, Sheila Roy, Renuka Kamath

Faculty Publications – Marketing

Purpose

Given the continuing need to study service marketing adaptations that emerged in the wake of Covid-19, this paper looks at the formation and evolution of purchase groups (PGs) that arose in Indian gated communities during the pandemic and have continued functioning in the post-pandemic marketplace. Not only did these groups act as much-needed interstitial markets during a time of significant external disruption, but they also served as sites of value co-creation with consumers collaborating with each other and with service providers.

Methodology

Using a phenomenological research approach, we conduct 22 in-depth interviews with Indian consumers and small service providers …

Christianization In The Roman Empire: Politics, Culture, And Architecture During The Reign Of Emperor Constantine I, Peyton Connor May 2024

Christianization In The Roman Empire: Politics, Culture, And Architecture During The Reign Of Emperor Constantine I, Peyton Connor

History

The Christianization of the Roman Empire under Constantine I (306–337 C.E.) marked a turning point in Late Antiquity. It was an era defined by the legalization, expansion, and integration of Christianity into Roman life. After the Edict of Milan in 313 C.E., Constantine’s policies—including but not limited to his participation in church councils, alliances with bishops, and several administrative reforms—advanced Christianity’s political and social standing while preserving elements of traditional religion. Yet Christianization was not purely a imperial endeavor. Ascetic and monastic movements resisted state influence, and everyday believers adapted their faith within familiar cultural frameworks. Additionally, architecture revealed the …

Playing Myself: The Gothic's Challenge To Audience Identity, Elena Durant May 2024

Playing Myself: The Gothic's Challenge To Audience Identity, Elena Durant

All Theses

This thesis presents close readings of the 2015 video game Bloodborne and Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey in order to illuminate how the Gothic genre challenges identity. Both Bloodborne and Northanger Abbey respond to their genres and are preoccupied with the ways that their audiences might interact with them. Bloodborne’s gameplay directly incentivizes players to reflect on the way that they play the game. Northanger Abbey is a parody of the Gothic novel that reflects just as much on the idea of the reader as it does on the conventions of the genre it parodies. Both of these works are …

Exploring Teacher Agency And Student Engagement: A Case Study Of An Urban High School In The United States, Alexandra M. Kirby May 2024

Exploring Teacher Agency And Student Engagement: A Case Study Of An Urban High School In The United States, Alexandra M. Kirby

Educational Studies Dissertations

Using a mixed-methods case study design, this study explored teacher agency, student engagement, and the relationship between these two complex constructs at a Northeastern urban high school, “City High School” (CHS). Teacher agency refers to the level of control or power teachers have in their classrooms and in a school system as well as to feelings of belonging, of being supported, and of competency. Fredricks et al. (2004) suggest student engagement is an intricate construct that includes behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. A social constructivist and critical theory lens informed the research. Three guiding research questions focused on teacher agency …

Clinical Assessment Of Erosive Tooth Wear Objective Outcome Measures, Elizabeth Wewers May 2024

Clinical Assessment Of Erosive Tooth Wear Objective Outcome Measures, Elizabeth Wewers

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether enamel surface texture can be used as objective and quantitative measurements to detect and monitor erosive tooth wear (ETW) as an adjunct to the subjective Basic Erosive Wear Evaluation (BEWE) that is commonly used today. This longitudinal observational clinical study enrolled 32 subjects with a sample of n = 584 teeth. Conventional dental microwear surface texture parameters (surface complexity, roughness, and anisotropy - Asfc, Sa, Str, respectively) (were generated using white-light scanning confocal profilometry) from the buccal surfaces of each tooth accepted to the study. I personally scanned and analyzed n …

Juvenile Diversion Programs In Minnesota Counties And Their Effect On Arrest Rates, Victoria Floden May 2024

Juvenile Diversion Programs In Minnesota Counties And Their Effect On Arrest Rates, Victoria Floden

Political Science Theses and Capstones

The rise of juvenile diversion programs in Minnesota has sparked widespread discussion, especially as the nation addresses its concerns about overcrowded jails and prisons stemming from past "tough-on-crime" policies. Minnesota has responded by creating alternative pathways for juvenile offenders, aiming to keep them out of the traditional justice system while still holding them responsible for their actions. However, research and existing literature are unclear as to which of these diversion programs help reduce juvenile arrest rates. Different factors in each case could provide insight into which programs are most effective. I seek to explain why certain Minnesota counties have been …

Clonal Plants' Traits And Responses Following Fire Disturbance In Ponderosa Pine Ecosystems In The Colorado Front Range, Raymond Erskine May 2024

Clonal Plants' Traits And Responses Following Fire Disturbance In Ponderosa Pine Ecosystems In The Colorado Front Range, Raymond Erskine

Master's Theses

Mountain ecosystems are currently experiencing increasing impacts of disturbances (e.g., wildfire) due to global changes in climate and land use, leading to significant changes in vegetation composition and landscape dynamics. Clonal plants, characterized by their vegetative reproduction strategies, offer a range of ecologically important traits to cope with disturbances. However, clonality is often excluded in studies of post-fire vegetation dynamics in mountain ecosystems, and our knowledge of the ability of clonal plants to respond to differing disturbance regimes is limited. Therefore, I examined the response of understory vegetation following fire disturbance in burned and unburned ponderosa pine stands of the …

Every Student Deserves A Struggle: Planning For The Implementation And Differentiation Of High Cognitive Tasks, Kaitlyn Jones, Kaitlyn N. Jones May 2024

Every Student Deserves A Struggle: Planning For The Implementation And Differentiation Of High Cognitive Tasks, Kaitlyn Jones, Kaitlyn N. Jones

Honors College Theses

The work of Mary Kay Stein and Margaret Smith is foundational to cognitive research in education. Most other works in the field branch out from their work in one way or another. One of their most influential contributions was their system for classifying tasks according to cognitive demand or the type of thinking the tasks requires students to engage in. Memorization tasks or tasks that involve procedural work without making deeper connections are classified as having low cognitive demand. On the other hand, tasks involving procedures with connections and “doing” mathematics tasks are viewed as having high cognitive demand. Research …

Selective Partitioned Regression For Accurate Kidney Health Monitoring, Alex Whelan, Ragwa Elsayed, Alessandro Bellofiore, David C. Anastasiu

Computer Science and Engineering

The number of people diagnosed with advanced stages of kidney disease have been rising every year. Early detection and constant monitoring are the only minimally invasive means to prevent severe kidney damage or kidney failure. We propose a cost-effective machine learning-based testing system that can facilitate inexpensive yet accurate kidney health checks. Our proposed framework, which was developed into an iPhone application, uses a camera-based bio-sensor and state-of-the-art classical machine learning and deep learning techniques for predicting the concentration of creatinine in the sample, based on colorimetric change in the test strip. The predicted creatinine concentration is then used to …

Graduate Thesis Collection

This research set out to explore the relationship between autistic individuals and music. Current research on autism and music education focuses primarily on the accounts of teachers, parents, and other stakeholders, and does not center autistic voices. The following research questions guided this study: (1) What can we learn from autistic adults, specifically those still involved in music, about their lifelong experiences in music and music education? (2) What insight can we gain from these experiences to create more inclusive environments for autistic individuals? To answer these questions, autistic adults who self-identified as still involved in music completed a short …

Simvastatin Induces Autophaghy-Mediated Cell Death In Metastatic Breast Cancer Cells, Jessica Allagoa May 2024

Simvastatin Induces Autophaghy-Mediated Cell Death In Metastatic Breast Cancer Cells, Jessica Allagoa

Theses (2016-Present)

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women. Due to the limited effectiveness of current anticancer drugs, ongoing research has extended towards alternative drug categories for potential treatments. Recent findings indicate that statins possess the ability to suppress tumors across various cell types. Traditionally, statins are known as a class of cholesterol-lowering agents and function by inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, a key enzyme in the mevalonate pathway. However, statins can also suppress cell proliferation and ultimately lead to cell death, which includes Type I apoptosis-induced cell death or Type II autophagy-induced cell death. Autophagy is …

Investigating The Role Of Mybl1 Gene Variants In Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Ayah Alnakhalah May 2024

Investigating The Role Of Mybl1 Gene Variants In Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Ayah Alnakhalah

Theses (2016-Present)

Several years ago our laboratory identified the MYBL1 gene as over-expressed in a subset of triple negative breast cancer cells. Since then we have applied a number of different approaches in an attempt to better define the presence of the gene in these cancers. There is clear and convincing evidence both by other investigators and from experimental observations in our laboratory that alternate splice sequences of a gene can code for variants with different biological roles. We are considering such a duality for the MYBL1 gene in breast samples. The first step towards these studies requires careful analyses of the …

Theses (2016-Present)

The objective of this master’s thesis is to configure a socio-historic narrative in such a way that it clearly illustrates how and why much of North Omaha’s Black American collective transitioned from a mundane migratory movement to that of the Black Panther Party. To wholly comprehend the essence and relevance of Black Power one must understand its lesser-known evolution in locales such as Omaha, Nebraska, in the Midwest. Hopefully, this research will enhance a pre-existing trove that other historians may pull from to consider similarities and juxtapositions of causal dynamics that underpinned Black Power in different regions of the United …

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) susceptibility is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Previous findings suggest DNA methylation as a potential mechanism in T2D pathogenesis and progression.

METHODS: We profiled DNA methylation in 248 blood samples from participants of European ancestry from 7 twin cohorts using a methylation sequencing platform targeting regulatory genomic regions encompassing 2,048,698 CpG sites.

FINDINGS: We find and replicate 3 previously unreported T2D differentially methylated CpG positions (T2D-DMPs) at FDR 5% in RGL3, NGB and OTX2, and 20 signals at FDR 25%, of which 14 replicated. Integrating genetic variation and T2D-discordant monozygotic twin analyses, we identify …

Algorithms For Canvas-Based Attention Scheduling With Resizing, Yigong Hu, Ila Gokarn, Shengzhong Liu, Archan Misra, Tarek Adbelzaher

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Canvas-based attention scheduling was recently pro-posed to improve the efficiency of real-time machine perception systems. This framework introduces a notion of focus locales, referring to those areas where the attention of the inference system should “allocate its attention”. Data from these locales (e.g., parts of the input video frames containing objects of interest) are packed together into a smaller canvas frame which is processed by the downstream machine learning algorithm. Compared with processing the entire input data frame, this practice saves resources while maintaining inference quality. Previous work was limited to a simplified solution where the focus locales are quantized …

Attribute-Hiding Fuzzy Encryption For Privacy-Preserving Data Evaluation, Zhenhua Chen, Luqi Huang, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo, Xingbing Fu, Xingxing Jia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Privacy-preserving data evaluation is one of the prominent research topics in the big data era. In many data evaluation applications that involve sensitive information, such as the medical records of patients in a medical system, protecting data privacy during the data evaluation process has become an essential requirement. Aiming at solving this problem, numerous fuzzy encryption systems for different similarity metrics have been proposed in literature. Unfortunately, the existing fuzzy encryption systems either fail to achieve attribute-hiding or achieve it, but are impractical. In this paper, we propose a new fuzzy encryption scheme for privacy-preserving data evaluation based on overlap …

Financial Literacy And Ipo Underpricing, Xiaoran Jia, Kiridaran G. Kanagaretnam, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo May 2024

Financial Literacy And Ipo Underpricing, Xiaoran Jia, Kiridaran G. Kanagaretnam, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Using an international sample of IPO firms and two country-level measures of financial literacy, we find strong evidence that financial literacy is negatively associated with IPO underpricing. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that the effect of financial literacy in reducing IPO underpricing is more pronounced when the information environment is less transparent. Employing path analysis, we document that information friction, firm transparency, and stock market participation are mechanisms that mediate this relationship. Our study contributes to and extends the literature by providing strong evidence that citizens' financial literacy has an important and consistent influence on IPO underpricing.

Dao Gives Birth To Lots Of Killing: Violence In The Daoist Tradition, Micah Dunwoody May 2024

Dao Gives Birth To Lots Of Killing: Violence In The Daoist Tradition, Micah Dunwoody

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Violence in Daoism takes on political and/or cosmological significance. The earliest texts, including Daodejing, argue for defensive war that must be conducted appropriately by rulers. Myths and rituals that developed later in the tradition portray gods and spirits subduing demons. The latter are either killed or enlisted into the armies of the gods. Rituals include the role of humans, particularly Daoist priests/ritual specialists who call upon the gods to fight demons who inflict maladies upon people. This paper also examines the role of martial arts and physical violence. Martial arts are often imbued with religious hues in Daoism, as …
