Client Treatment Preferences In Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy For Depression In Participants With Depressive Symptoms, Alyssa B. Oliva
Client Treatment Preferences In Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy For Depression In Participants With Depressive Symptoms, Alyssa B. Oliva
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Research on psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT), a promising treatment option for major depression, has not revealed if potential clients show preferences about the demographic characteristics of providers comparable to those common in other forms of psychotherapy. Previous work suggests that honoring comparable client preferences can enhance therapeutic outcomes. This study aims to investigate the importance ratings for a same-gender and a same-race therapist in both cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and PAT.
School Resource Officers: History, Efficacy, And Unintended Consequences, Alysha Gagnon May
School Resource Officers: History, Efficacy, And Unintended Consequences, Alysha Gagnon May
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
There have been police and school partnerships in the United States for as long as public schools have existed, dating to the early- to mid-1800s. These partnerships have formalized as educational philosophies have changed, particularly in the context of school safety and discipline practices. In this dissertation, I explore the impact of implementing a School Resource Officer (SRO) program on school safety and I contribute to the national conversation about disparities in exclusionary discipline practices related to the presence of SROs. There have been several key turning points in these police and school partnerships, notably the Flint, Michigan, school liaison …
The (Dis)Obedience Politics Of Victorian Literature, Audrey Peterson-Mccann
The (Dis)Obedience Politics Of Victorian Literature, Audrey Peterson-Mccann
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The (Dis)Obedience Politics of Victorian Literature argues that Victorian children learned thesocial valuation of themselves and others through the figure of the animal, and while this learning was often hegemonic, some Victorian authors subverted this form of didacticism, creating alternative pedagogies that extended subjecthood to those who were often excluded. While it is well-known that animals have historically been enlisted as teaching symbols, I contend that literary animals in Victorian fiction were used to critique, expose, and otherwise provide commentary and context for the potentially widespread disciplinary practice of childrearing as these practices defined and qualified subjectivity and objectivity. To …
Comparative Population Genomics Of Bloodstream-Derived Staphylococcus Aureus From Disparate Geographic Origins In The United States, Milan Pfister
Comparative Population Genomics Of Bloodstream-Derived Staphylococcus Aureus From Disparate Geographic Origins In The United States, Milan Pfister
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal and an opportunistic pathogen that causes a variety of diseases in humans, from minor skin and soft tissue infections to life-threatening invasive diseases. The emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) complicate treatment options, which can lead to significant morbidity and mortality of patients. In this study, we compared the clonal lineages and genomic features of bloodstream-derived S. aureus populations from different locations. We leveraged 957 previously published genomes derived from bloodstream infections across six hospitals located in Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, and New York, USA. We carried out pan-genome analysis, …
Development Of Selective Rna Aptamers For Kainate Receptors, Samantha Ingenito
Development Of Selective Rna Aptamers For Kainate Receptors, Samantha Ingenito
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) play a major role in mediating the excitatoryfunctions in the central nervous system (CNS). iGluRs are ligand-gated ion channels that are activated when glutamate binds to the extracellular ligand binding domain, thereby leading to the opening of the ion channels. Three subtypes of iGluRs include kainate receptors, α-amino-3- hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptors, and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Abnormal and dysregulation of these receptors have cytotoxic effects for neurons and have been implicated in various neurological diseases. For instance, elevated expression of a key AMPA receptor subunit has been linked to conditions such as ALS, where cytotoxic levels …
A Multi-Century Reconstruction Of Sea Surface Temperature, Salinity, And Density From A Northern Red Sea Coral., Daliza Nanette Rivera-Matos
A Multi-Century Reconstruction Of Sea Surface Temperature, Salinity, And Density From A Northern Red Sea Coral., Daliza Nanette Rivera-Matos
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The Red Sea Outflow Water (RSOW), an intermediate water mass formed in the northern Red Sea, is a primary Red Sea water circulation process. Understanding these water circulation processes gives us an insight into this region's climate dynamics. The intermediate water formation is one of the main processes of the water circulation in the northern Red Sea and feeds the Indian Ocean with saltier and colder water. Despite understanding the RSWO's association with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), its historical response to this climate mode remains unclear. There has not been a long-term record to analyze the relationship between the …
Prop-Oriented Make-Believe In Metaphor And Morality, Jordan Ray Alexander Corner
Prop-Oriented Make-Believe In Metaphor And Morality, Jordan Ray Alexander Corner
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
“Bill is such a bulldozer.” How does this metaphor mean what it does? How are we to understand how metaphors work with respect to meaning. In this work, there is an exploration of both of the answers that have already been given to these questions, as well as some reasons to think that those answers are insufficient. Importantly, Kendal Walton has put forward a prop-oriented make-believe account of meaning in metaphor. This account succeeds where others fail, though it is not without its own detractors. Elisabeth Camp and Catherine Wearing both object to Walton’s accounts and their objections require responses. …
Species Distribution And Logistic Regression Analysis Of Nosocomial Legionella Detection And Infection In New York State, 2017 – 2023, Roxann Brna
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Healthcare facilities are high-risk areas for legionellosis infections, as they have large, complex potable water systems ideal for Legionella proliferation, and they host susceptible populations. New York State regulation 10 NYCRR § 4-2: Protection Against Legionella in Healthcare Facilities was implemented in July 2016 to reduce healthcare-acquired legionellosis. This regulation mandated environmental surveillance of healthcare facilities’ potable water systems via culture. Data from these environmental reports were paired with data for cases of healthcare-acquired legionellosis infections for the years 2017-2023. Using these data, geographic Legionella species and serogroup distributions were described, and logistic regressions evaluated facility attributes associated with potable …
I Know Not Seems: Contemporary American Fiction And The New Sincerity, Eric C. Koch
I Know Not Seems: Contemporary American Fiction And The New Sincerity, Eric C. Koch
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Since the publication of David Foster Wallace’s essay, “E Unibus Plurum,” in 1993, critics have attended ever more closely to the problematic effects of postmodernism. Postmodernism, with its origins located in poststructuralism’s antifoundational philosophy, fashions a world without anchors or boundaries, where relativism holds sway and irony is the culture’s habitus. The twin concepts of relativism and irony are, of course, primary in postmodern literature, and therefore indicate why postmodernism’s trajectory terminates in overt metafiction, experimental excess, and nihilism. By reading postmodernism as a reflection of these principles, we begin to register how the literature of the period following postmodernism …
Martin Luther King Jr.'S Leadership Philosophy And The Political Crisis In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Joel N. Kapapa
Martin Luther King Jr.'S Leadership Philosophy And The Political Crisis In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Joel N. Kapapa
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The ongoing crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo has its origins in several socio-political and economic events, including colonization, dictatorship, institutionalized corruption, misuse of authority for personal interest, illicit trade of mineral resources, and tribalism. In addition to armed conflicts, there are violent crimes, such as armed robbery and armed home invasion, as well as the failure of the country’s leadership to unite the people and promote the dignity of its citizens, all of which have reached a critical level ( Kama Funzi, p.146). The Democratic Republic of Congo seems to be a country in misery, but it is …
Clarifying The Relationship Between Weight Suppression And Eating Psychopathology: The Role Of Fear Of Weight Gain And Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Danielle Elizabeth Peters
Clarifying The Relationship Between Weight Suppression And Eating Psychopathology: The Role Of Fear Of Weight Gain And Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Danielle Elizabeth Peters
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Objective: Weight suppression (WS), the discrepancy between a person’s highest and current body weight, is largely associated with eating pathology in clinical and non-clinical samples. WS may put individuals in a biobehavioral bind: biological factors may drive the body toward weight regain, which in turn drives eating disorder (ED) behaviors in an attempt to prevent weight regain. However, few studies have examined psychological factors that may play a role in the biobehavioral bind of WS. As such, the present study aimed to (1) whether WS was associated with fear of weight gain (FOWG) and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and (2) …

Determining The Time Since Deposition Of Bloodstains Based On Vibrational Spectroscopy For Forensic Purposes, Alexis Renee Weber
Determining The Time Since Deposition Of Bloodstains Based On Vibrational Spectroscopy For Forensic Purposes, Alexis Renee Weber
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
At the scene of violent crimes, bloodstain evidence is one of the most frequently found and valuable types of evidence. Blood traces discovered at crime scenes can provide crucial information to an investigation. By obtaining a DNA profile from the bloodstain, the profile can be used to link someone to a crime scene, which can corroborate or dispute a witness's statement. However, the current analysis of bloodstains is still not able to answer a key question for investigators: how much time has passed since the criminal event occurred? In addition, an equally important aspect of crime reconstruction is the ability …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Measurements of natural electromagnetic radiation from Earth using microwave radiometers provide deep insight into our planet and its environmental conditions. These insights are essential for quantifying, understanding, and predicting various geophysical processes, such as climate patterns, water cycles, carbon cycles, and more. These passive measurements are diverse and cover a wide range of frequencies, depending on the sensitivity of microwave radiation to changes in important geophysical parameters. However, it is important to note that the microwave spectrum is also utilized by active services, such as wireless communication networks and radars. As a result, Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) in the measurements …
The Potential For Enhancing Tumour Detection In Medical Imaging With Coherent Scatter, Aastha Boora
The Potential For Enhancing Tumour Detection In Medical Imaging With Coherent Scatter, Aastha Boora
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A number of medical disorders may only be diagnosed with the use of medical imaging, and X-rays are commonly used to detect fractures, abnormal masses, and cavities. The penetration power of X-rays enables them to effectively see these structures inside the body. However, since background structures like fat or fibrous glandular tissue have similar absorption coefficients, X-ray radiography often face challenges when imaging soft tissues for cancer/tumour diagnosis. Research has shown the theoretical potential for X-ray phase imaging to increase contrast factors by a factor of 100 or more, which theoretically could result in enhanced visualization of tumours. In addition …

This study took a micro-ethnographic approach to qualitative research and utilized multimodal discourse analysis to analyze the data. The …
Relating Perception And Memory For A Novel Set Of Reconfigurable Auditory Stimuli, Nathan Francis Gillespie
Relating Perception And Memory For A Novel Set Of Reconfigurable Auditory Stimuli, Nathan Francis Gillespie
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Although real-life events are complex and temporally extended, most memory research employs discrete, static stimuli presented in the visual modality. We begin to bridge this gap using a novel set of auditory stimuli constructed by adjusting the distribution of power across upper frequency bands. Across three experiments, participants rated similarity between pairs of sounds and engaged in a recognition memory task. We applied non-metric multidimensional scaling to similarity ratings to obtain a three-dimensional psychological representation of the stimuli. The representation inferred from the similarity ratings predicted recognition memory performance for single probe sounds following sequential presentation of two sounds. Recognition …

A Reimagined Periphery: Environment And The Construction Of The French Colonial Empire In North Africa, Tyson A. Luneau
A Reimagined Periphery: Environment And The Construction Of The French Colonial Empire In North Africa, Tyson A. Luneau
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation examines the relationship between environmental knowledge and empire building in French North Africa during nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since its 1830 invasion of Algiers, France engaged in a century-long conquest of the Maghreb, extending sphere of influence to the neighboring regions of Tunisia, Morocco, and the Soudan. Under the guise of the mission civilisatrice, colonialists stressed their conquest’s goal of spreading enlightened French civilization for the benefit of both the indigenous populations and the world at large. France’s conquest of North Africa was not, however, solely focused on the peoples and cultures of the region. Simultaneously, France engaged …
Survival Of The Optimist: How Emotion Words Are Processed Within The Survival Paradigm, Dailyn Quinn Clark
Survival Of The Optimist: How Emotion Words Are Processed Within The Survival Paradigm, Dailyn Quinn Clark
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Memory for words encoded for their fitness relevance is enhanced compared to memory for words encoded based on relevance to other scenarios (Nairne et al., 2007). Much of the work examining emotion within the survival paradigm has focused on the presented scenarios (Bell et al., 2013; Kazanas & Altarriba, 2017, 2018; Kroneisen et al., 2022). However, no work has yet to focus on the emotionality of the information that is being encoded. A possible contributor to the advantage may be the emotional valence of the encoded items, as emotion has been known to have effects on memory (Dev et al., …
Advancing Learning Models For High-Dimensional Data: From Molecular Modeling To Motion Planning, Tuan Nguyen Anh Tran
Advancing Learning Models For High-Dimensional Data: From Molecular Modeling To Motion Planning, Tuan Nguyen Anh Tran
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Processing and analyzing high-dimensional data, particularly in domains like protein research and robotics, introduces unique challenges. In protein analysis, high-dimensional data often arises from complex molecular structures and their interactions. Analyzing protein data involves intricate computational models and algorithms that must deal with the large size of molecular datasets and the need to extract biologically relevant information. This makes it challenging to discern significant protein structure-activity relationships, understand complex biological interactions, or predict protein behavior accurately. Similarly, in robotics, high-dimensional data is prevalent when dealing with sensory inputs, the dimensionality of the robot, or the complexity of the operational environments. …
Understanding Attitudes Among Professionals Who Interact With Youth Who Exhibit Problematic Sexual Behavior, Erin Gardner
Understanding Attitudes Among Professionals Who Interact With Youth Who Exhibit Problematic Sexual Behavior, Erin Gardner
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Problematic sexual behaviors (PSB) among youth have been a prominent public health and social concern. Although these behaviors have previously been considered to comprise a “curiosity” or an “experimentation”, PSB is now recognized as causing harm and suffering for victims and family members while also having a considerable economic influence in medical, behavioral health, social services, and criminal justice systems. Much research has examined how perceptions and attitudes impact our behaviors towards PSB among adults, but none examines how perceptions and attitudes impact our behaviors towards youth. Knowing there are several gaps in literature, the current study was conducted to …
Exploring Nucleic Acid Modifications For Rna-Based Therapeutics: Insights From Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samantha Biaesch
Exploring Nucleic Acid Modifications For Rna-Based Therapeutics: Insights From Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samantha Biaesch
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Nucleic acid modifications are pivotal in biological processes due to their multifaceted roles. They regulate gene expression by modulating transcription, with modifications in the nucleic acid, sugar group, or in its phosphate backbone. In our investigation, we explore the use of molecular dynamics simulations to study nucleic acid modifications for potential applications in RNA-based therapeutics. These modifications introduce nonstandard atoms, such as selenium, and new parameterizations must be performed to properly simulate in GROMACS. These parameters govern bonded (strength of bonds, angles and dihedrals) and non-bonded (size and charges) interactions for each of the atoms in the modification. The first …
Barrier Removal Prioritization To Increase Climate Resiliency And Aquatic Connectivity For Communities In The Upper Susquehanna Basin, Cassandra Mae Davis
Barrier Removal Prioritization To Increase Climate Resiliency And Aquatic Connectivity For Communities In The Upper Susquehanna Basin, Cassandra Mae Davis
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The streams and rivers of the Upper Susquehanna Basin have been heavily modified over centuries through deforestation of nearshore areas and creation of physical barriers, such as dams and culverts. Dams and undersized culverts negatively affect aquatic organisms by modifying habitat conditions and restricting movement of these organisms. In addition, improperly maintained dams and undersized culverts can intensify flooding impacts and negatively affect water quality. A standardized method is needed to determine which barriers should be prioritized for assessment and potential replacement or removal based on multiple ecosystem and societal factors. The goal of this analysis was to have a …
Developing Historical Empathy For Enslaved African Americans: Teaching And Learning Difficult History During A Field Trip To A Historic Site, Frances Tria
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This case study examined how we ask students to engage in learning the difficult history of slavery by experiencing a field trip to a historic site where that history occurred, how that experience informs student development of historical empathy for the enslaved people who lived and labored there, the role it may play in supporting a more complex understanding of African American history, and how students engage civically upon that knowledge. This study found that place-based education to a site of difficult history immerses students in site-specific visual, textual, narrative, and physical resources that provide a frame to contextualize and …
Is The Language Surrounding Current Punk Culture Signaling A Watering Down Of Dissent? Culture Mapping The Signifying Language Of Present-Day Punk Against Original Punk To See If It Is Still Addressing Societal Issues And Challenging The Status Quo., Marie Lena Tupot
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Punk, originating from the economic turmoil of 1970s Britain, has transitioned into the digital realm, shedding its traditional symbols of rebellion while posing questions about contemporary dissent, such as: Are Punk ideals still addressing societal issues and challenging the status quo, or are they becoming more superficial or commercialized? Or are expressions of dissent genuine and rooted in lived experiences, or are they being appropriated for commercial gain? This study delves into the language of the shifting subcultures of Punk, silently thriving online through Cyberpunks, Cypherpunks, Anarchists, Anarcho-capitalists, and Cryptopunks. Each subgroup expresses rebellion uniquely: Cyberpunks through hacking, Cypherpunks through …

Positive Behavior Interventions And Supports: A Quasi-Experimental Study Of Academic Outcomes, Erin J. Brewer
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Districts and schools are under pressure to increase student academic outcomes while meeting their various social-behavioral needs. This pressure is compounded by the responsibility of creating climates that are safe and equitable for all students where teachers can teach, and all students can learn. However, far too often, negative, and disruptive school climates are counteracting efforts being made by teachers to increase academic outcomes (Warren et al., 2006). Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) offers a proactive approach to promote positive school climate while reducing punitive and reactionary discipline procedures. However, the relationship between PBIS implementation fidelity and academic achievement …
