Chest Binding Alters Thoracic Anatomy In Transmasculine Youth, Julienne Ryland, Jeannel Miclat, Diana Peterson May 2024

Chest Binding Alters Thoracic Anatomy In Transmasculine Youth, Julienne Ryland, Jeannel Miclat, Diana Peterson

Research Day

Introduction:

With the recent legislation restricting gender-affirming care for minors, more mechanical means of gender-confirming methods are being used as a substitute. For adolescent transmasculine people, this includes chest binding, designed to flatten breast tissue and give a more streamlined masculine appearance. Chest binding is a relatively inexpensive and widely available technique to affirm gender identity without the need for healthcare professional involvement. Although chest binders are recommended to be worn for less than 8 hours daily, transmasculine youth have been documented wearing their chest binders for upwards of 18-21 hours a day. This consistent pressure on their chest essentially …

Variable-Height Wind Tunnel Fairing, Jordan D. Birjandi, Leonardo Martinez May 2024

Variable-Height Wind Tunnel Fairing, Jordan D. Birjandi, Leonardo Martinez

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

For wind tunnel testing, fairings are used to prevent support struts from disrupting airflow near a model and to prevent aerodynamic forces from acting on the support strut. With an infinite number of possible testing configurations, a fairing can be more or less effective for a test, impacting test accuracy. The purpose of this project is to create a fairing system with an adjustable height and investigate how this impacts aerodynamic testing. If a fairing is too short, the aerodynamic forces/moments from the model support strut can be picked up by the force balance. If a fairing is too tall …

Causal Inference In Ethnographic Research: Refining Explanations With Abductive Logic, Strength Of Evidence Assessments, And Graphical Models, Jeffrey G. Snodgrass, H. J. François Dengah Ii, Seth I. Sagstetter, Katya Xinyi Zhao

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In their classic accounts, anthropological ethnographers developed causal arguments for how specific sociocultural structures and processes shaped human thought, behavior, and experience in particular settings. Despite this history, many contemporary ethnographers avoid establishing in their work direct causal relationships between key variables in the way that, for example, quantitative research relying on experimental or longitudinal data might. As a result, ethnographers in anthropology and other fields have not advanced understandings of how to derive causal explanations from their data, which contrasts with a vibrant “causal revolution” unfolding in the broader social and behavioral sciences. Given this gap in understanding, we …

Optical Tweezers Explorations: Dna-Mitoxantrone Interactions At 20pn, Heléna Kathryn Beeloo May 2024

Optical Tweezers Explorations: Dna-Mitoxantrone Interactions At 20pn, Heléna Kathryn Beeloo

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Mitoxantrone is a chemotherapy drug that treats a variety of cancers by inhibiting cancer cell replication through intercalation with DNA. Intercalation is the process by which certain small molecules slide flat planar regions in their structure between the base pairs of DNA. This increases the stacking force in the DNA double helix, preventing DNA replication by increasing the force required to separate the two strands that compose the helix. In this study, dual-beam optical tweezers were used to determine the binding kinetics and dissociation constant of Mitoxantrone to single molecules of DNA at 20 pN of force. This study utilized …

Ten Thousand Ai Systems Typing On Keyboards: Generative Ai In Patent Applications And Preemptive Prior Art

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Generative AI makes it possible to create unlimited amounts of text at essentially zero cost. While this technology has many benefits, it can also be used in ways that undermine the goals of the patent system. This Article identifies policy solutions to address the potentially anti-innovative application of generative AI in several patent-related contexts. First, it examines the use of AI to publish massive online databases of preemptive prior art intended to foreclose patentability. This Article argues that computer-generated invention descriptions published without any substantive nexus to human understanding of their contents should not count as “printed publications” under US …

In K-12 education, student voice is not often considered when establishing curriculum, addressing school policy, or creating a climate that reflects culturally inclusive teaching practices. Across education systems serving Indigenous communities within the United States, the voices of youth as a form of contribution are silenced, which echoes further attempts towards the erasure of the existence of these communities. The context of the study highlighted various strengths through their traditions, languages, and cultural teachings. While Indigenous communities exist globally, this study centered on Indigenous communities from the North American continent, specifically those Native to the Hawaiian Islands. To learn about …

Neurobiological Underpinnings Of Autistic Traits, Sensory Processing, And Mental Health In Young Adult Males And Females, Miranda Jane Mcquarrie May 2024

Neurobiological Underpinnings Of Autistic Traits, Sensory Processing, And Mental Health In Young Adult Males And Females, Miranda Jane Mcquarrie

Theses and Dissertations

Females may present with autism more frequently than is diagnosed, due, in part, to autistic trait and sensory processing differences. Unfortunately, recruiting enough autistic female participants is difficult, because of such underdiagnoses. By approaching autism as a continuous variable, neurotypical (NT) individuals can be studied to better understand autistic individuals. Thus, to examine potential neurobiological underpinnings of sex-based behavioral profiles, we recruited 52 NT individuals (22 male; 30 female). Participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine how functional network connectivity (via group independent components analysis) underpinned overall male/female differences in previously measured behavioral autistic trait and sensory …
