The Rule Of Law, The Lawyer’S Role As A Public Citizen, And Professional Identity: How Fostering The Development Of Professional Identity Can Help Law Schools Address The Crisis Facing American Democracy, Kendall Kerew
Mercer Law Review
American democracy is in crisis. The January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol must serve as a renewed wake-up call for the legal profession. We can no longer keep our heads down, focused solely or even primarily on serving our clients, without being mindful that what we do every day as lawyers starts and ends with our duty to uphold the rule of law and our system of justice. We must acknowledge that lawyers are the ones who have put democracy at risk. Lawyers are the ones who, in their role as zealous advocates, attempted to overturn the 2020 …
Language Models, Plagiarism, And Legal Writing, Michael L. Smith
Language Models, Plagiarism, And Legal Writing, Michael L. Smith
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Language models like ChatGPT are the talk of the town in legal circles. Despite some high-profile stories of fake ChatGPT-generated citations, many practitioners argue that language models are the way of the future. These models, they argue, promise an efficient source of first drafts and stock language. Others make similar claims about legal writing education, with a number of professors urging the acknowledgment of language models. Others go further and argue that students ought to learn to use these models to improve their writing and prepare for practice. I argue that those urging the incorporation of language models into legal …

A Flow-Curvature-Based Model For Channel Meandering In Tidal Marshes, Giulio Mariotti, Alvise Finotello
A Flow-Curvature-Based Model For Channel Meandering In Tidal Marshes, Giulio Mariotti, Alvise Finotello
Faculty Publications
Channel meandering is ubiquitous in tidal marshes, yet it is either omitted or weakly implemented in morphodynamic models. Here we propose a novel numerical method to simulate channel meandering in tidal marshes on a Cartesian grid. The method calculates a first-order flow by considering the balance between pressure gradient and bed friction. To account for flow momentum shift toward meander outer banks, the flow is empirically modified. Unlike previous simplified methods that relied on the curvature of the bank, this modification is based on the curvature of the flow, making the model suitable for use in dendritic channel networks. The …

Wild Joy: An Exploration In Queer Spatial Dynamics, Kipper Thomas Reinsmith
Masters Theses
What does it mean to feel represented in a space?
What does a trans space look like?
How can we queer our interior spaces?
Our world is crafted by the many designers that have come before us. These systems, products, and spaces are built upon assumptions of the bodies that will use and occupy them—namely cisgender, able-bodied, straight folks.
Designing and creating objects as a trans person is an act of radical nature. To take up space, to design for trans luxury, for the sake of beauty, for joy itself, feels counterintuitive to the narratives we’ve been served: that of …

Masters Theses
Many special moments are fleeting and buried in our memories. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, people are always pursuing efficiency, and as we move forward, we gradually lose some of our perceptions of life.
I explored the role of memory in establishing the emotional connection between newly designed objects and people. Shared experiences and feelings can evoke emotional resonance and a sense of collective experience. When harnessed in design, these feelings can facilitate a deeper understanding and connection to the product. Therefore, objects transformed from these shared experiences can not only carry memories but also become carriers …
Multiple Changes In Connectivity Between Buccal Ganglia Mechanoafferents And Motor Neurons With Different Functions After Learning That Food Is Inedible In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel, Jeffery Gill
Multiple Changes In Connectivity Between Buccal Ganglia Mechanoafferents And Motor Neurons With Different Functions After Learning That Food Is Inedible In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel, Jeffery Gill
Faculty Scholarship
Changes caused by learning that a food is inedible in Aplysia were examined for fast and slow synaptic connections from the buccal ganglia S1 cluster of mechanoafferents to five followers, in response to repeated stimulus trains. Learning affected only fast connections. For these, unique patterns of change were present in each follower, indicating that learning differentially affects the different branches of the mechanoafferents to their followers. In some followers, there were increases in either excitatory or inhibitory connections, and in others, there were decreases. Changes in connectivity resulted from changes in the amplitude of excitation or inhibition, or as a …

Neuronal Lrp4 Directs The Development, Maturation And Cytoskeletal Organization Of Drosophila Peripheral Synapses, Alison Depew, Joseph Bruckner, Kate O'Connor-Giles, Timothy Mosca
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Synaptic development requires multiple signaling pathways to ensure successful connections. Transmembrane receptors are optimally positioned to connect the synapse and the rest of the neuron, often acting as synaptic organizers to synchronize downstream events. One such organizer, the LDL receptor-related protein LRP4, is a cell surface receptor that has been most well-studied postsynaptically at mammalian neuromuscular junctions. Recent work, however, identified emerging roles, but how LRP4 acts as a presynaptic organizer and the downstream mechanisms of LRP4 are not well understood. Here, we show that LRP4 functions presynaptically at Drosophila neuromuscular synapses, acting in motoneurons to instruct pre- and postsynaptic …

For certain surgical procedures, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has become more advantageous than traditional open surgery. Therefore, mastery of laparoscopic skills is an essential component of surgical training and requires considerable time and effort. The Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program has been developed as a tool to improve and assess fundamental surgical skills. In fact, using a low-cost Box-Trainer or a simulator, laparoscopic surgeons are required to train using a set of structured tasks that can be objectively used to assess their laparoscopic skills, which must be mastered before carrying out real-life laparoscopic procedures. These tasks include peg transfer, …

How Preseason Hope Impacts Fans’ Attendance Intentions And Psychological Well-Being, Hyun-Woo Lee, Seong-Jin Park, Kun Chang, Jun-Phil Uhm
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The authors developed a two-factor preseason hope scale and examined the moderation effects of preseason hope and state hope on the chain of effects from team identification and attendance intention to subjective well-being. A moderated–moderated mediation model was tested (n=224). Consequently, attendance intention mediated the relationship between team identification and well-being. The effect of team identification on attendance intention was stronger for those with lower preseason hope and state hope. The effect of attendance intention on well-being was stronger for those with higher preseason hope. Interaction effects by levels of hope were found among the conditional indirect effects.
Constraint-Based Latent Profile Analysis To Investigate The Physical Activity Market Segments Among Chinese College Students, Jeeyoon Kim
Journal of Applied Sport Management
A segmentation study is conducted via constraint-based latent profile analysis (based on the hierarchical model of leisure constraint), focusing on Chinese college students. Multi-profile analysis further compares key determinants (i.e., constraints/motives) of physical activity intention by profile. Three profiles emerged: ‘body image-conscious physically active’, ‘noncommittal but achievement-driven’, and ‘constrained but motivated by enjoyment/socialization’. Each profile reports distinctive patterns in perceived levels of constraints, motives, and intention. Constraints/motives identified as determinants for intention vary by profile. Compared to North America, China tends to have more college students seeing physical activity as a task than leisure. Profile-specific marketing strategies are suggested.
