A System For Automatic And Fast Gymnastics Pose Estimation And Key Frame Identification, Ilias Masmoudi, Johannes Link, Sebastian Möck, Petra Nissinen, Anne Koelewijn

ISBS Proceedings Archive

In artistic gymnastics, performance analysis tools that provide immediate feedback to athletes and coaches are key to optimizing performance. Therefore, we developed a system that provides direct video feedback and automatically identifies key frames relevant to achieve high performance. This system estimates the gymnast’s two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional pose from a single-view video and uses a long short-term memory (LSTM) network to identify key frames, in which contact with the ground or an apparatus starts or ends. We compared three 2D pose estimation algorithms and found that MoveNet yielded the highest accuracy, being able to detect 84% of the joints …

Gait Event Detection During Walking Using Deep Learning And Thigh-Worn Accelerometry, Claas Lendt, Tom Stewart

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Mobility and gait are important indicators of human health. However, measuring them outside of a laboratory setting can be challenging. To measure human physical behaviour in free-living conditions, thigh-worn accelerometers and data-driven algorithms are commonly used. This study explores a deep learning approach that utilises data from a single thigh-worn accelerometer. A temporal convolutional network was trained to predict gait events in healthy adults during various walking conditions. The model demonstrated a high level of detection accuracy (F1 score ≥ 99%) and good time agreement for both gait events, with the 95% limits of agreement being -0.04s and 0.04s. …

Jumping And Non-Jumping Athletes Land Differently: Implications For Return To Sport, Jeroen P. Marks, Marsha Tijssen, Mohamed El Hadouchi, Ina Janssen

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Currently the LSI is used to determine whether an athlete is ready to return-to-sport (RTS). However, research shows that LSI inadequately identifies RTS readiness. Assuming that all athletes use the same landing strategy overlooks the potential variation between different sports. This study examines kinematic differences of the triple hop test between jumping and non-jumping athletes using inertial measurement units. Differences in landing kinematics between 18 male athletes (10 handball, 8 judo) were analysed. SPM analysis identified significant differences in trunk rotation and lateral flexion during landing. Notably, judokas demonstrated distinct movement patterns, related to emphasising sport-specific mechanics compared to handballers. …

Whole-Body Coordinative Strategies Contribute To The Minimization Of Centre Of Mass Displacement In Maximal Velocity Sprinting, Chris L. Vellucci, Shawn Beaudette

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Sprinting is a dynamic skill that requires rapid and precise postural control. This study investigates the association between frontal plane centre of mass (CoM) displacement, whole-body coordination, and sprint velocity. Significant correlations with sprint velocity were found between stance phase frontal plane (cPL), superior inferior range of motion (SI ROM), and sprint velocity. Spatiotemporal coordinative coupling of the bilateral knees and thorax-pelvis axial twisting displayed significant partial correlations with the minimization of frontal plane cPL and SI CoM RoM. The findings of this work suggest that both the upper and lower body contribute to the control of the CoM within …
