Onesamp 3.0: Estimation Of Effective Population Size Via Snp Data From One Population, Aaron Hong, Rebecca Cheek, Suhashi Nihara De Silva, Kingshuk Mukherjee, Isha Yooseph, Mark Heim, David Tallmon, Christina Boucher

Faculty, Staff, and Students

The genetic effective size (Ne) is arguably one of the most important characteristics of a population as it impacts the rate of loss of genetic diversity. Methods that estimate Ne are important in population and conservation genetic studies as they quantify the risk of a population being inbred or lacking genetic diversity. Yet there are very few methods that can estimate the Ne from data from a single population and without extensive information about the genetics of the population, such as a linkage map, or a reference genome of the species of interest. We present ONeSAMP 3.0, an algorithm for …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The mineral chemistry, whole-rock geochemistry, 40Ar / 39Ar dating and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes of the Eocene Narman (Erzurum) Volcanic rocks in the southeast of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt (EPOB, NE Türkiye) were investigated. The Narman Volcanites consist of basaltic dyke, basaltic lava, and basaltic volcanic breccia facies. Volcanites contain plagioclase (An34-80), clinopyroxene (Wo38-47En41-50Fs5-18), and olivine (Fo68-90) as phenocrystals with magnetite/titanomagnetite microphenocrysts. New 40Ar-39Ar ages suggest that these volcanic rocks erupted between 44.5 ± 0.1 and 43.4 ± 0.1 Ma, within the Middle Eocene (Lutetian). Narman Volcanites have calc-alkaline character, with medium-high K content. Volcanites are enriched in large ion lithophile …

Facies Architecture And Depositional Evolution Of The Middle Eocene Mass Flow-Dominated Fan Delta Complex In The Multifeeder Areas: Elazığ Marine Basin (Eastern Türkiye), Onur Alkaç

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The mass flow-dominated fan delta complex is developed by the rapid deposition of coarse-grained materials in front of uplifted areas under the influence active tectonism. This is important for providing clues about the first opening stages of marine basins. The study aims to shed light on the fact that mass flow-dominated fan delta complexes play an active role in determining the characterization of tectonism controlling basin opening. In the study area, mass flow-dominated deposits of the Deliktaş Fan Delta Complex (DFDC) represent the first deposits of the southern part of the Middle Eocene Elazığ Marine Basin, whose development is controlled …

A Systematic Review Of Implementation Fidelity Interventions For School-Based Behavior Supports In Special Education Settings, Paige C. Mesui Jul 2024

A Systematic Review Of Implementation Fidelity Interventions For School-Based Behavior Supports In Special Education Settings, Paige C. Mesui

Theses and Dissertations

Problem behavior has been increasing in classrooms and has significantly contributed to teacher burnout. Students in special education settings have been found to demonstrate problem behaviors more than their general education peers. Schools have a responsibility to implement evidence-based behavioral support to assist students with their behavioral needs, decrease problem behavior, and increase desired behavior in the classroom. There is a relationship between the level of implementation fidelity and the effectiveness of an intervention. If there are not high levels of fidelity, the results are not expected to mimic what has been found in the research. The purpose of this …

Development And Initial Validation Of The Musical Discrimination And Styles Task: Measuring Children And Adolescent Music Aptitude And Achievement, Dawn R. Mitchell White

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation had two purposes: 1) to create and document the development of a new music achievement test entitled the Musical Discrimination and Styles Task (MDAST), and 2) to describe the strength of the evidence supporting the validity and reliability of this new developmentally appropriate music aptitude and achievement instrument. I created a theoretical framework based on 1) the cognitive theory of child development of Jean Piaget, 2) the phase model of artistic development by David Hargreaves, and 3) the theoretical models of music discrimination, audiation, and music achievement by Edwin Gordon. The MDAST’s design assessed students’ abilities to evaluate …

Impact Of Containment And Elevation On Created Marsh Plant Community And Ecosystem Dynamics, Kevin R. Stoner Jul 2024

Impact Of Containment And Elevation On Created Marsh Plant Community And Ecosystem Dynamics, Kevin R. Stoner

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal marsh restoration is increasing globally, as marshes are impacted by anthropogenic impacts. Billions of dollars are allocated to marsh restoration in the Mississippi River delta where wetland loss rates are extremely high. The recovery of structural and functional attributes of created marshes varies by attribute measured and project. Here, two marshes created in 2018 and one natural marsh were used to examine how variations in hydrologic connectivity and marsh elevation influence subsurface hydrology and salinity, vegetation community structure, soil properties, accretion, and denitrification. I established a comparative field study in a created marsh contained within a higher elevation containment …

Using Behavioral Skills Training To Promote Online Safety Skills In Individuals With Developmental Disabilities, Robert Lynn Jul 2024

Using Behavioral Skills Training To Promote Online Safety Skills In Individuals With Developmental Disabilities, Robert Lynn

Theses

Abstract

Children are spending more time online, which is putting them at risk of encountering online predators. There have been attempts to minimize the occurrence of these encounters, but most of these involved instructional training and parent supervision. One alternative intervention for addressing safety skills that has been shown to be effective is behavior skills training (BST), which is a procedure based on behavior analytic literature. BST involves instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of BST on the acquisition of online safety skills in adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities. In-situ …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Behavioral Skills Training For Teaching Implementation Of Natural Language Paradigm Program To Staff In An Early Intervention Setting, Abigail Kinnear

Theses

Due to the prevalence of language delays in children with ASD, it is important to provide effective treatment and ensure highly trained staff to implement language programs. Natural Language Paradigm (NLP) is a naturalistic approach that includes individualized motivating variables, natural reinforcers, and direct response to reinforcer contingencies to increase vocal communication and generalization of skills. Behavioral skills training (BST) is an effective strategy that uses instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback to teach staff to implement specific programs. The current study replicated Seiverling et al. (2009) study on evaluating the effectiveness of using BST to train three staff to implement …

Navigating Identity: An Examination Of Intersectional Discrimination And Suicidal Ideation Among Lgbq Latinx Individuals, Jaclyn Pachicano Jul 2024

Navigating Identity: An Examination Of Intersectional Discrimination And Suicidal Ideation Among Lgbq Latinx Individuals, Jaclyn Pachicano

Dissertations (1934 -)

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, with LGBQ Latinx adults showing higher risk for suicidality and related mental health outcomes. Experiences of discrimination, including heterosexism and ethnic discrimination, are often connected to increased risk for suicidal ideation. In addition to intersectional experiences of discrimination, LGBQ Latinx people often feel an incompatibility between their sexuality and ethnic identity, known as conflicts in allegiances (CIA), possibly increasing risk of suicidal ideation. It remains unclear what mechanisms connect intersectional discrimination and suicidal ideation. The current study expands on intersectional research by utilizing the Interpersonal Theory of …

A nanostructured hybrid material based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MCM-41) functionalized with chitosan and a fluorescent dye (dansylglycine), designated MCM-41@Ch@DnsGly, was synthesized and characterized with a view to its application for the visualization of latent fingerprints. These nanoparticles were applied as latent fingerprint developers for marks on surfaces of diverse chemical composition, topography, optical characteristics, and spatially variant nature, typical of forensically challenging evidence. For quality assessment of the enhanced fingermarks, the developed images were analyzed holistically using the UK Home Office scale, forensic protocols and, in terms of their constituent features (minutiae), using forensic software. Across a substantive collection …

Non-Surgical Bleeding And Transurethral Resection Of The Prostate (Turp) Syndrome After Turp Surgery: A Case Report And Literature Review, Akram M. Eraky, Sidney C. Rubenstein, Adnan Khan, Yasser Mokhtar, Nicole Gregorich Jul 2024

Non-Surgical Bleeding And Transurethral Resection Of The Prostate (Turp) Syndrome After Turp Surgery: A Case Report And Literature Review, Akram M. Eraky, Sidney C. Rubenstein, Adnan Khan, Yasser Mokhtar, Nicole Gregorich

GME Publications

Patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) surgery can develop TURP syndrome and post-TURP bleeding. Post-TURP bleeding can be surgical, from arteries or venous sinuses, or non-surgical, due to coagulopathy preventing clot formation. Non-surgical post-TURP bleeding may be due to high concentrations of urokinase and tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in the urine that cause fibrinolytic changes and increase bleeding risk. Urine urokinase and tPA may have both local and systemic fibrinolytic effects that may prevent blood clot formation locally at the site of surgery, and cause fibrinolytic changes systemically through leaking into the blood stream. Another post-TURP complication that …

Two Essays On Auditor Ostracism And Authenticity, Kehinde Mayokun Ogunade Jul 2024

Two Essays On Auditor Ostracism And Authenticity, Kehinde Mayokun Ogunade

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The first essay investigates whether auditor race and voice have an impact on perceived ostracism. Drawing on social identity theory, I hypothesize that race and auditor voice could lead to feelings of ostracism and that authenticity will moderate the relationship between auditor race, voice, and ostracism. Using a 2×2 between-subject design, my findings indicate that auditor race does not have a significant impact on feelings of ostracism, whereas auditors feel more ostracized if they do not speak up. Additional analysis using the Hayes process model finds that authenticity moderates the relationship between auditor race and ostracism, even though race does …

Essays On Health, Labor, And Development Economics, Md Mohsan Khudri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In the first essay, using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, I estimate the impact of breastfeeding initiation and duration on multiple cognitive, health, and behavioral outcomes spanning early childhood through adolescence. To mitigate the potential bias, I employ a doubly robust (DR) estimation method, addressing misspecification in either the treatment or outcome models while adjusting for selection effects. My novel approach is to use and evaluate a battery of supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms to improve propensity score (PS) estimates. I demonstrate that the gradient boosting machine algorithm removes bias more effectively and minimizes other prediction errors …

The Imposter Phenomenon In Graduate Students: A Social Constructionist Perspective Using Narrative Inquiry, Colin Smith Jul 2024

The Imposter Phenomenon In Graduate Students: A Social Constructionist Perspective Using Narrative Inquiry, Colin Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A narrative inquiry study explored six graduate students’ experiences of "imposter syndrome” during their graduate studies. Semi-structured interviews occurred with each participant at two time points: one initial interview and a follow-up interview to discuss the impact of the initial interview and to perform member checking. Each interview was analyzed individually to create summative narrative of their unique experiences of imposter feelings. Interviews were also analyzed on a study-wide level to explore common threads of the “imposter syndrome” in graduate school. Results suggested imposter feelings in graduate students were related to the ability to discuss imposter feelings with others, program …

A Historical, Rhetorical And Prescriptive Analysis Of The Iconic Black Eulogy As Prophetic Rhetoric, Pierre Louis Vincent Jul 2024

A Historical, Rhetorical And Prescriptive Analysis Of The Iconic Black Eulogy As Prophetic Rhetoric, Pierre Louis Vincent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While the rhetorical structure of the Black eulogy is rooted in the Aristotelian genre of eulogy in the Greek tradition, it continues to develop beyond that tradition in response to American socio-cultural exigencies that shape it. The Black eulogy has matured rhetorically through the hardships of slavery, structural oppression, and institutionalized violence to develop a prophetic rhetorical path to succor and give hope to a community weary from the diurnal inequities of oppression made palpable at the death of African American icons. Using a close reading, this study establishes the Black eulogy’s rhetorical foundation in the Aristotelian rhetorical genre, while …

Role Of Sds-22/Pp1 Phosphatase In Polarizing The Germplasm Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Embryo, Aparna Nurni Ravi Jul 2024

Role Of Sds-22/Pp1 Phosphatase In Polarizing The Germplasm Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Embryo, Aparna Nurni Ravi

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

During asymmetric cell division, cell polarity and cell cycle are tightly coupled to ensure robust segregation of cell fate determinants and generation of cellular diversity. In the one-cell C. elegans embryo, multiple cell cycle kinases regulate cell polarization and posterior segregation of germline fate determinants (germplasm). For example, PLK-1 kinase inhibits the retention of its germplasm substrate POS-1 in the anterior, driving POS-1 segregation to the posterior (Han et al., 2018). Additionally, MBK-2 kinase disassembles P granules in the anterior through phosphorylation of the P granule scaffold MEG-3, helping to drive P granule segregation to the posterior (Wang et al., …

Critical Geospatial Data Science: Principles For Curating, Analyzing, And Sharing Geospatial Data, Daniel Beene

Geography ETDs

Critical geospatial data science (CGDS) offers principles for engaging with geospatial data, methods, and translation by pulling from critical epistemologies in geography. CGDS interrogates objective “truths” in science by actively engaging in critique of geospatial data and methodologies. Specifically, CGDS contends with the political context and motivations behind geospatial data science (GDS) while using GDS methods to understand how social-spatial arrangements manifest and are reinforced through data. CGDS explicitly aims to inform practices for criticality from within GDS and provides opportunities for multidisciplinary research that incorporates social theories, contextualizes geospatial data, and critically evaluates the effects and ethics of (under)representation …

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles

Leucaena is a versatile legume shrub/tree used as tropical livestock forage and in timber industries, but it is considered a high environmental weed risk due to its prolific seed production and broad environmental adaptation. Interspecific crossings between Leucaena species have been used to create non-flowering or sterile triploids that can display reduced weediness and other desirable traits for broad use in forest and agricultural settings. However, assessing the success of the hybridisation process before evaluating the sterility of putative hybrids in the target environment is advisable. Here, RNA sequencing was used to develop breeding markers for hybrid parental identification in …

Immanuel Kant’S Transcendental Idealism: On The Possibility Of Freedom In A Deterministic World, Anamarie R. Avecilla Jul 2024

Immanuel Kant’S Transcendental Idealism: On The Possibility Of Freedom In A Deterministic World, Anamarie R. Avecilla

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Freedom is a central question in Philosophy. It has always been asked: How do determinism and freedom cohere in a human being? How can the fact that humans exist and undertake life projects in a thoroughgoingly deterministic world be reconciled with the claim that human acts remain free and efficacious? This work explores the problem of freedom and determinism using Kant’s answer in the Third Antinomy in the Kritik der reinen Vernunft, and using Transcendental Idealism as epistemological framework for a possible resolution to this problem. If one could assume with Kant that what we know are not things in …
