BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is necessary to develop healthy lungs and other organs early in life. Most infants born before 28 weeks' gestation have low vitamin D levels at birth and a limited intake during the first month. Enteral vitamin D supplementation is inexpensive and widely used. The appropriate supplementation regimen for extremely preterm infants is controversial, and the effect of different regimens on their blood levels and outcomes is unclear.
METHODS: Randomized, blinded comparative effectiveness trial to compare two vitamin D supplementation regimens for inborn infants(400 IU/day with established feedings) or increased supplementation (800 IU/day with any feedings) during the …

Evaluating The Impact Of A 2-Week Peer Enhanced E-Placement (Peep) On Preregistration Physiotherapy Students’ Attitudes, Self-Perceived Confidence, And Competence In Delivering Telerehabilitation, Christie Robinson, Sarah Buckingham, Jennifer Freeman
School of Health Professions
The COVID-19 pandemic instigated rapid digital transformation of physiotherapy practice and education. We explored whether pre-registration specific teaching and practical experience of telerehabilitation may improve student confidence and competence in delivering telerehabilitation and support its clinical acceptance. A 2-week Peer Enhanced E-Placement (PEEP) was developed and evaluated to explore its impact on third year physiotherapy student attitudes, perceived competence, and confidence in delivering telerehabilitation. Students completed a questionnaire (pre and post PEEP), rating perceived confidence and competence in four areas of telerehabilitation: assessment, intervention, communication, and problem solving. Group discussions explored the impact of the PEEP on their attitudes towards …
Ultrasound Based Dynamic Reference Reflection Technique For Simultaneous Specific Gravity And Temperature Estimation, Jose Paul
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work is driven by the need for a noninvasive density estimation device for pipeline infrastructure due to the increased risk of volatility in the high energy density fuels that are available in the market. Ultrasound based techniques have proved to be a viable alternative to traditional u tube resonance or nuclear techniques due to their robustness and safety offering. The major update that this work intends to make to the existing technology is development of a system wherein the transducer or the electronic components remain isolated from the flow field. As a result, this work dives headfirst into the fundamentals …

We provide a worldline representation of the one-loop effective action for a Dirac particle coupled to external scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector fields. Extending previous work by two of the authors on the pure vector-axialvector case to all four couplings, it allows one to treat the real and the imaginary parts of the effective action in a unified manner, at the price of having a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Unlike existing worldline representations, our new worldline action contains terms with an odd number of Grassmann fields, leading to ordering problems that in the worldline formalism are usually encountered only in curved space. …

Online Teacher-Student Rapport In Higher Education, Joshua Fitzgerald
Theses and Dissertations
Rapport developed between teachers and students in a typical classroom setting can provide students with a more positive school experience, an increase in learning and performance, and added feelings of social belonging (Cook, et al., 2018). Online learning is associated with many advantages like a more comfortable setting for students to participate (Majewska & Zvobgo, 2023), but also includes disadvantages like feelings of isolation (Phirangee & Malec, 2020) which can result in rapport being more difficult to develop. Established rapport during online educational settings can yield a multitude of positive outcomes for online students and teachers alike. These outcomes include …

Despite widespread use of hair products globally, little is known about the prevalence and patterns of use in populations outside the United States. As some hair products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and EDCs have been linked to breast cancer, which is increasing globally, in this study, we addressed key knowledge gaps about hair product use and practices, and perceptions of use among women in two counties in Kenya. Using community-engaged approaches in Embu and Nakuru, Kenya, we recruited women aged 15–50 years to complete a questionnaire that ascertained hair product use in the last 7–14 days, ever using hair dyes …

Declined memory is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Experiments in rodents and human postmortem studies suggest that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) plays a role in memory, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here, we investigate the role of 5-HT 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) in regulating memory. Transgenic mice expressing a humanized HTR2C mutation exhibit impaired plasticity of hippocampal ventral CA1 (vCA1) neurons and reduced memory. Further, 5-HT neurons project to and synapse onto vCA1 neurons. Disruption of 5-HT synthesis in vCA1-projecting neurons or deletion of 5-HT2CRs in the vCA1 impairs neural plasticity and memory. We show that a selective 5-HT2CR agonist, …

Proximate Composition Of Mature Seeds From Soybean Plants Grown In Different Environments, T M. Kuo, E Eskins, R L. Cooper
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objectives of this study were to examine the influence of differences in sunlight irradiation on the accumulation of soluble oligosaccharides in mature soybean (Glycine max L.) seeds and to determine the correlations between important seed constituents. Plants were grown in field houses covered with plastic filters that varied sunlight irradiation. The most obvious effect of both blueand red-deficient sunlight was a reduction in the level of stachyose and sucrose that coincided with an increase in raffinose level and decreased oil content. Blue growth house which was deficient in red light spectrum also produced seeds with an increased protein content. …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
High numbers of various arthropods early in the season, especially thrips, mites, and grass plant bugs, were associated with silvertop injury in six grass seed fields in Saskatchewan in 995. Insect numbers in sweep samples were frequently suppressed for one or two weeks in plots sprayed with an insecticide. Four fields had low levels of arthropods early in the season andoelow incidence of silvertop later on. In a field of Russian wildrye grass with high arthropod populations, seed yield was highest in plots that had been sprayed with insecticide prior to the boot stage of grass growth. In one field …

Alfalfa Seeding Patterns And Their Relations With Vegetative And Reproductive Development, R B. Medeiros, A.V A. Jacques, C Nabinger
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
This study was conducted to understand how plant density (17, 61 and 89 plants m-2) and row spacing (30 and 90 cm) affect plant development and the consequences on potential seed yield (PSY) and agricultural realized seed potential (ARSP) of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in south Brazil. Both variables were not affected by row spacing but were negatively correlated to plant population. This was a consequence of a higher allocation of assimilates to reproductive structures at low plant competition, denoted by a positive correlation between these two variables and reproductive parts growth rate. Despite the benefits of the low plant …

Applying Student-Centered Strategies In The Applied Teaching Music Studio, Jeanne Goffi-Fynn
Visions of Research in Music Education
Applied studio instruction is a field of education set in the context of a one-to-one setting, traditionally seen as a master-apprentice model, where the “training of skills” is said to be a priority. However, as the field evolves and is influenced by other areas in teaching and learning, one begins to look for ways to apply student-centered or constructivist strategies to the music studio. In this article, we will look broadly at what it means to be student-centered in the music studio, breaking down the areas into five categories of rapport, motivation, critical thinking, content specific areas such as practice, …

Effects Of Cutting Height On Yield And Quality Of Five Napier Cultivars, S T. Jorgensen, S Tudsri, A Pookpakdi, O Stolen
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Results of this experiment revealed that dry matter yield of five Napier grass species increased with higher stubble and that a delay in closing date had produced a negative effect on regrowth for the following season, especially, when low cutting height had been imposed. The nitrogen and phosphorus percentage in leaf and stem materials were not affected by cutting height. Potassium percentage and NDF% were lower for herbage with 0 cm cutting height compared to 30 cm cutting. Among the different cutting intensities, 20 cm and 30 cm cutting height can be recommended through the growing season.

Range scientists have always had the mistaken idea that herders cannot appraise, characterize or assess the state of their rangeland or range resource. From observations made in northern Cameroon, it appears that herders know the pastoral environment in which they operate probably better than many range scientists. They do not seem to have a good idea on range trends. However, from their pattern of range utilization over time it is possible to have an assessment of the state and trend of rangeland. A wide range of information on the pastoral knowledge of rangeland is needed to develop a sustained range …
