Double Issuer-Hiding Attribute-Based Credentials From Tag-Based Aggregatable Mercurial Signatures, Rui Shi, Yang Yang, Yingjiu Li, Huamin Feng, Guozhen Shi, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute-based anonymous credentials offer users fine-grained access control in a privacy-preserving manner. However, in such schemes obtaining a user's credentials requires knowledge of the issuer's public key, which obviously reveals the issuer's identity that must be hidden from users in certain scenarios. Moreover, verifying a user's credentials also requires the knowledge of issuer's public key, which may infer the user's private information from their choice of issuer. In this article, we introduce the notion of double issuer-hiding attribute-based credentials ( DIHAC ) to tackle these two problems. In our model, a central authority can issue public-key credentials for a group …

Evilscreen Attack: Smart Tv Hijacking Via Multi-Channel Remote Control Mimicry, Yiwei Zhang, Siqi Ma, Tiancheng Chen, Juanru Li, Robert H. Deng, Elisa Bertino

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modern smart TVs often communicate with their remote controls (including the smartphone simulated ones) using multiple wireless channels (e.g., Infrared, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi). However, this multi-channel remote control communication introduces a new attack surface. An inherent security flaw is that remote controls of most smart TVs are designed to work in a benign environment rather than an adversarial one, and thus wireless communications between a smart TV and its remote controls are not strongly protected. Attackers can leverage such a flaw to abuse the remote control communication and compromise smart TV systems. In this paper, we propose EvilScreen, a novel …

Modern Android apps consist of both host app code and third-party libraries. Traditional static analysis tools conduct taint analysis for API misuses on the entire app code, while third-party library (TPL) detection tools focus solely on library code. Both approaches, however, are prone to some inherent false negatives: taint analysis tools may neglect third-party libraries or face timeouts/errors in whole app-based analysis, and TPL detection tools are not designed for pinpointing specific vulnerable methods. These challenges underscore the need for enhanced identification of insecure methods in Android apps, particularly for app markets addressing open-source security incidents. In this paper, we …

Time-Restricted Feeding Reveals A Role For Neural Respiratory Clocks In Optimizing Daily Ventilatory-Metabolic Coupling In Mice, Aaron A. Jones, Gabriella M. Marino, Deanna M. Arble Jul 2024

Time-Restricted Feeding Reveals A Role For Neural Respiratory Clocks In Optimizing Daily Ventilatory-Metabolic Coupling In Mice, Aaron A. Jones, Gabriella M. Marino, Deanna M. Arble

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The master circadian clock, located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), organizes the daily rhythm in minute ventilation (V̇e). However, the extent that the daily rhythm in V̇e is secondary to SCN-imposed O2 and CO2 cycles (i.e., metabolic rate) or driven by other clock mechanisms remains unknown. Here, we experimentally shifted metabolic rate using time-restricted feeding (without affecting light-induced synchronization of the SCN) to determine the influence of metabolic rate in orchestrating the daily V̇e rhythm. Mice eating predominantly at night exhibited robust daily rhythms in O2 consumption (V̇o2), CO2 production (V̇co2), and V̇e with similar peak times (approximately ZT18) that …

METHODS: Through focus groups with 21 academic pediatric faculty conducted between January and March 2023, this qualitative study examined knowledge of Communities of Practice and the factors that affect sense of belonging and engagement. The authors iteratively coded transcripts to generate themes. RESULTS: Community accessibility; …

Bracketed Assessments In Behavioral Gerontology: Evaluating Preference With Present And Absent Stimuli, Flavia Eduarda Del Castillo Troche Jul 2024

Bracketed Assessments In Behavioral Gerontology: Evaluating Preference With Present And Absent Stimuli, Flavia Eduarda Del Castillo Troche

Theses and Dissertations

The present study evaluated the use of bracketed assessments to assess the activity preference of three individuals with dementia. The study proposed an alternative method to traditional stimulus preference assessments, to bridge the gap in behavior analytical literature within behavioral gerontology. Thus, bracketed assessments were conducted using two presentation methods, verbal plus visual presentation and verbal-only presentation. Results suggested that while participants showed consistency within low preferred activity selection in the bracketed assessment, variability was observed among participants’ preferences for high and moderate preferred activities. Both presentation methods yield similar selection results for one participant, however, the other two participants …

Cultural Selection Of Ethical Self-Control Toward Sustainability, Michael Jonathan Passage Jul 2024

Cultural Selection Of Ethical Self-Control Toward Sustainability, Michael Jonathan Passage

Theses and Dissertations

This study consisted of three experiments to improve our understanding of the conditions that foster cooperation related to sustainability. In Experiment 1, participants completed a demographic questionnaire and an environmental and social discounting task. Results (a) support the utility of the environmental discounting task; (b) suggest responding to the discounting task is dissimilar; and (c) show that responding to hypothetical consequences on the social discounting task correlates to actual responding. Experiment 2 evaluated whether interlocking behavioral contingencies (by microculture members) associated with sustainable and non-sustainable aggregate products (Condition A & B) could be selected by cultural consequences (i.e., 20¢ toward …

Pubertal timing varies considerably and is associated with later health outcomes. We performed multi-ancestry genetic analyses on ~800,000 women, identifying 1,080 signals for age at menarche. Collectively, these explained 11% of trait variance in an independent sample. Women at the top and bottom 1% of polygenic risk exhibited ~11 and ~14-fold higher risks of delayed and precocious puberty, respectively. We identified several genes harboring rare loss-of-function variants in ~200,000 women, including variants in ZNF483, which abolished the impact of polygenic risk. Variant-to-gene mapping approaches and mouse gonadotropin-releasing hormone neuron RNA sequencing implicated 665 genes, including an uncharacterized G-protein-coupled receptor, GPR83, …

The Prohibition Of Annexations And The Foundations Of Modern International Law, Ingrid W. Brunk, Monica Hakimi Jul 2024

The Prohibition Of Annexations And The Foundations Of Modern International Law, Ingrid W. Brunk, Monica Hakimi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The international legal norm that prohibits forcible annexations of territory is foundational to modern international law. It lies at the core of three projects that have been central to the enterprise: (1) to settle title to territory as the basis for establishing state authority; (2) to regulate the use of force across settled borders; and (3) to provide for people within settled borders collectively to determine their own fates. Prohibiting forcible annexations is integral to each of these projects independently, and by tying them together, has had a transformative effect on the legal system as a whole. However, its significance …

The Needless Search For A Founding-Era "Hearsay" Definition, Jeffrey Bellin Jul 2024

The Needless Search For A Founding-Era "Hearsay" Definition, Jeffrey Bellin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Modern Confrontation Clause doctrine permits only unconfronted "out-of-court statements that would have been admissible in a criminal case at the time of the founding." To operationalize this concept, the Supreme Court identifies "testimonial hearsay" as the Clause's primary concern. Its opinions regularly dive into the historical record to refine what counts as "testimonial" but ignore that record in defining "hearsay." This omission cannot last. Cases in the lower courts, and one on the Court's recent docket, concern testimonial but (arguably) non-hearsay statements. And while confrontation jurisprudence is supposed to be tied to founding-era evidence law, the "hearsay" definition, casually referenced …

Relationship-oriented human resource management (HRM) contributes to organizational functioning by promoting employee relationships, coordination, and cooperation. We propose unit-level positive affective climate as a motivational mechanism through which relationship-oriented HR systems can positively influence unit service quality and relationships with beneficiaries, and prevent individual emotional exhaustion. Moreover, we propose collective occupational calling serves as an alternative motivational source that can substitute for the positive effects of positive affective climate. In analyzing a sample composed of 742 nurses from 48 nursing units of two hospitals in China with data collection at three time points before and after the COVID-19 outbreak, our …

The Aridification Of The Great Salt Lake, David Thompson Jul 2024

The Aridification Of The Great Salt Lake, David Thompson

Ballard Brief

Throughout Nepal, brick kilns employ thousands of families annually for the seasonal work of crafting and shipping bricks. As families migrate between work in brick factories and agricultural work at home, more factors block their children from a complete and quality education. The open invitation to begin working with their parents and to help provide for the family becomes a strong temptation that causes many children to give up on school. In addition, Nepal's lack of law enforcement frequently allows children to drop out of school early without consequence. Their parents do not attempt to stop them either, making little …

Implementation Of Universal Design For Learning In The K-12 School Setting, Jaecy Hauge

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

I am proposing a school improvement plan for Okoboji Elementary School. The goal is to implement a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with best practices to support increased student achievement. Your support and active participation are crucial in this process. With your valuable input, we can successfully apply this flexible approach to teaching and learning, which has the potential to significantly improve student achievement. UDL operates through a framework that follows three core principles: representation, action/ expression, and engagement. UDL is based upon the most widely replicated finding in educational research: learners are highly variable (CAST, 2024).

Building A Foundation Of Phonemic Awareness In Preschool Children, Marti Meissner Jul 2024

Building A Foundation Of Phonemic Awareness In Preschool Children, Marti Meissner

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Building strong foundational literacy skills in preschool children has influences academic success positively in all curriculum areas, throughout their school years. Developing phonemic awareness skills is the biggest predictor of future reading success. Providing play-based instruction in the preschool environment is developmentally appropriate. However, researchers have shown that without direct, systematic instruction preschool children show little growth in these literacy skills. Studies have shown that the teacher professional development is necessary in their delivery of explicit and systematic instruction that focuses on phonemic awareness skills such as rhyming, segmentation, alliteration, and beginning and ending sounds in words. Following research findings, …

Does A Co-Teaching Model Increase Math Assessment Scores?, Kate Jackson

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Research findings demonstrate that using a co-teaching model improves assessment scores in math. Not only do scores increase in math, but the co-facilitating model also has proven to increase inclusion and self-efficacy among students. Studies have shown that having two educators in the classroom allows for the model of one teach and one assist to be highly beneficial. This plan includes a school improvement plan that outline demographics of the school, what the problem is, and actions to take to combat the issue.
