Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations
In response to the global crisis of type 2 diabetes prevalence, this dissertation investigated the impact of a culturally sustaining, health-centric science curriculum contextualized in type 2 diabetes. Using a case study methodology, it explored how the curriculum shaped math and science preservice teachers’ (PSTs) perceptions of science and how it can be taught and how prepared they felt to design and implement culturally sustaining, health-centric lessons. Four themes that emerged across both cases included: 1) connecting health, nutrition, everyday science, and culturally sustaining pedagogy through the CBSS curriculum, 2) connecting science to health and wellness concepts through the CBSS …
Two Essays On Corporate Finance. The Impact Of Ceo Cultural Heritage And Corporate Decision Making, Md Showaib Rahman Sarker
Two Essays On Corporate Finance. The Impact Of Ceo Cultural Heritage And Corporate Decision Making, Md Showaib Rahman Sarker
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two essays that investigate the effect of CEOs’ cultural heritage on corporate decision-making. In the first essay, I examine the impact of CEOs’ cultural heritage on corporate social responsibility (CSR). I present empirical evidence that CEOs originating from countries with high power distance, more uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation have high CSR scores, while those from individualistic and indulgent cultures have low CSR scores. This effect lasts up to three generations before it disappears due to acculturation. These results are robust to using propensity score matching, entropy balancing, and Oster’s test to address endogeneity and selection …

Development Of A Mechanical Boot For Prevention Of Deep Vein Thrombosis In Outpatients, Julian David Trevino
Theses and Dissertations
This work presents the development of a mechanical boot designed to prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in high-risk individuals such as those who have just had major procedures. DVT is a serious condition characterized by the formation of blood clots in the deep veins, particularly of the lower limbs, which can lead to life-threatening complications if not adequately addressed. The mechanical boot utilizes the principle of Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) to facilitate blood flow in the lower extremities, thereby mitigating the risk of clot formation. Through a combination of mechanical engineering, biomedical research, and user centered design, the project outlines …
Ecological Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Vegetated Estuarine Soils Of The Lower Laguna Madre, David R. De La Garza
Ecological Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Vegetated Estuarine Soils Of The Lower Laguna Madre, David R. De La Garza
Theses and Dissertations
Coastal wetlands are important ecosystems that provide numerous ecosystem services including erosion control, habitat for fauna, and carbon sequestration. Notably, coastal wetlands are producers of greenhouse gases (GHGs) but are able to store significant amounts of carbon relative to their surface area. Mangrove forests are amongst the most effective ecosystems for carbon sequestration. Soil emits (GHGs) containing carbon (such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4)), which are produced by organic matter decomposition and soil organic carbon mineralization, and both are an important component of the global carbon cycle. Soil emissions may be affected by a variety of factors including …

Baghdad Science Journal
Text encryption in video is a vital tool in many industries where protecting sensitive information is of highest concern. Algorithms and automated detection methods commonly struggle to locate hidden text in video frames. This resistance increases the security of the concealed information because it is challenging for uninvited parties to detect the presence of encrypted text. This research suggests a novel method for text encryption inside video utilizing the Salsa20 encryption algorithm and Harris Corner Detection. The goal of this study is to increase the secrecy and security of textual information that is embedded in video content. First step is …
Reaching An Aim Differently? Corporate Social Responsibility Regulation In Australia And India, Mia Mahmudur Rahim, Mohammad Abu Sayeed
Reaching An Aim Differently? Corporate Social Responsibility Regulation In Australia And India, Mia Mahmudur Rahim, Mohammad Abu Sayeed
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
Businesses incorporate corporate social responsibility principles mainly through voluntary and mandatory approaches. Advocates of the voluntary approach believe that companies can use charitable initiatives as a management tool to meet social and environmental expectations and that mandating Corporate Social Responsibility ("CSR") would not encourage companies to prioritize anything beyond profits. Opponents argue that without legal requirements to drive social responsibility, relying on companies to self-regulate would not effectively integrate social values into corporate behaviors. Instead, they suggest that legal regulation of CSR can offer a more effective strategy. This Article examines the limitations ofthese two approaches by analyzing Australia, which …
Nationality And Naturalizations In International Sports Law: Sports Federations As Gatekeepers, Ilias Bantekas
Nationality And Naturalizations In International Sports Law: Sports Federations As Gatekeepers, Ilias Bantekas
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The institutional rules of International Sports Federations ("IFs") and the International Olympic Committee ("IOC") concerning nationality and its transfer therein are regulated by the Nottebohm safeguard, which requires the conferral of nationality under domestic laws to be consistent with international law for the conferral to be valid in the international legal sphere. The international sporting arenas qualify as international legal space, but the compatibility of naturalization laws with this legal space is regulated and enforced not by states, but by non-state entities, namely IFs and the IOC. These institutional rules possess a normative character because the pertinent stakeholders consent to …

The Impact Of Teachers' Emotional Labor On Teachers And Students: A Literature Review, Jingjing Yu
Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship
Abstract: Emotional labor (EL) is a significant component of teachers' daily work. Duringtheir daily teaching activities, teachers experience various emotional responses. However, they do not always express their genuine emotions, but rather adopt different strategies toregulate their feelings. This process is referred to as emotional labor. Previous studies onteachers' EL have typically focused on a single aspect concerning either teachers or students. Therefore, this study synthesizes the effects of various EL strategies on both the cognitiveand emotional well-being of teachers, as well as on students' academic and emotionaldevelopment. By reviewing prior research on teachers' EL, we summarize the impact of ELon both …

A Probabilistic Approach To Estimate The Temporal Order Of Pathway Mutations Accounting For Intra-Tumor Heterogeneity, Menghan Wang, Yanqi Xie, Jinpeng Liu, Austin Li, Li Chen, Arnold Stromberg, Susanne Arnold, Chunming Liu, Chi Wang
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
The development of cancer involves the accumulation of somatic mutations in several essential biological pathways. Delineating the temporal order of pathway mutations during tumori- genesis is crucial for comprehending the biological mechanisms underlying cancer development and identifying potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Several computational and statistical methods have been introduced for estimating the order of somatic mutations based on mutation profile data from a cohort of patients. However, one major issue of current methods is that they do not take into account intra-tumor heterogeneity (ITH), which limits their ability to accurately discern the order of pathway mutations. To address this …

Validating An Automated Rodent Ultrasonic Vocalization Data Collator, Devin Mark Kellis
Theses and Dissertations
Rodent ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are a key dependent measure within behavioral science that have translational relevance with respect to medical, especially neuropsychiatric, illnesses. In recent years, several programs have been developed to enable the recording, labeling, and parameterization of rodent USVs via conventional, machine learning, or deep learning approaches. However, there remains a need to further automate the downstream process of data collation so that labeled and classified USV parameters can be rapidly formatted and analyzed via statistical approaches based on experimenter preferences. The aim of this thesis was therefore to validate an automated vocalization data collator (AVDC) to expedite …

Creating And Delivering Audio Descriptions For Videos, Rosiana Natalie
Creating And Delivering Audio Descriptions For Videos, Rosiana Natalie
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Despite anti-discrimination regulations mandating the provision of audio descriptions (ADs), the majority of online video content remains inaccessible to blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals. This is because these ADs are either absent or fail to adequately address the diverse and unique needs of the audience. Traditionally, content creators have relied on professionals to author ADs. However, this gold standard may not be accessible for some content creators because this method is still costly and has a long turnaround time. Moreover, when ADs are available, they tend to be static and unalterable, failing to cater to the unique preferences of BLV …
Executive Function And Feedback In Regulatory Monitoring: Towards An Understanding Of Flexible And Adaptive Emotion Regulation, Gilaine Rui Ng
Executive Function And Feedback In Regulatory Monitoring: Towards An Understanding Of Flexible And Adaptive Emotion Regulation, Gilaine Rui Ng
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Monitoring is a process which involves attending to feedback regarding the efficacy of ongoing regulatory strategies and determining whether to switch or maintain strategies (i.e., strategy switching or maintenance) in order to maximize adaptive outcomes. While conceptual accounts underscore the critical role of monitoring in flexible and adaptive emotion regulation, empirical research remains scarce, and the cognitive factors which subserve the monitoring process remain unclear and poorly understood. To bridge this gap, we investigate how components of executive function (EF)—a set of cognitive control processes necessary for flexible, goal-directed behavior—would differentially support the monitoring process. Additionally, we examine the extent …
Examining A Regulatory Flexibility Framework Of Psychological Distress: Integrating Distress Tolerance, Emotion Differentiation, And Emotion Regulation Flexibility, Germaine Yue Qi Tng
Examining A Regulatory Flexibility Framework Of Psychological Distress: Integrating Distress Tolerance, Emotion Differentiation, And Emotion Regulation Flexibility, Germaine Yue Qi Tng
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Several theoretical accounts identify emotion regulation (ER) difficulties, including poor abilities to withstand or distinguish negative emotions, as a transdiagnostic risk factor for symptoms of psychological distress. Considering this, nascent evidence hints that ER flexibility may be a mediating mechanism that explains the relationship between specific ER abilities (i.e., distress tolerance, negative emotion differentiation) and distress symptoms. Across time-lagged (Study 1) and three-wave longitudinal (Study 2) investigations of college-aged adults, a regulatory flexibility framework of distress was examined in which ER flexibility mediates the respective pathways from distress tolerance and negative emotion differentiation to psychological distress symptoms. Furthermore, we explored …
Decentralized Consensus And Governance For Collaborative Intelligence, Huiwen Liu
Decentralized Consensus And Governance For Collaborative Intelligence, Huiwen Liu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The data economy today is becoming increasingly collaborative in nature. Take business intelligence, for example. To unleash the full potential of big data, it is essential to integrate multi-source data depicting entities from a multi-faceted and multi-modal perspective, which, not surprisingly, is not achievable by any company alone. In collaborative intelligence, there are two core issues, namely "trust" and "incentive". The core mechanisms to solve these two problems are consensus and tokenization separately.
To solve the trust problem more effectively, we propose a systematic consensus evaluation framework to investigate whether existing consensus algorithms can do so. After a lot of …

Writing About A Stressful Experience Can Impair Visual Working Memory, Colton Hunter, Grant S. Shields
Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Acute stress has been well-established to impair working memory. However, less is known about how writing about an unresolved stressor may influence working memory or working memory processes. We addressed these issues in the present study (N = 282) by randomly assigning participants to write about an unresolved stressful experience (stressful writing condition or the events of the previous day). We then both measured performance on a change detection task and used computational modeling to estimate the processes underlying performance: attention, capacity, and guessing bias. We found that, relative to the control condition, writing about a stressful experience impaired …

Seagrass Ecosystem Recovery: Experimental Removal And Synthesis Of Disturbance Studies, Spencer J. Tassone, Carolyn J. Ewers Lewis, Karen J. Mcglathery, Michael L. Pace
Michigan Tech Publications
Net global losses of seagrasses have accelerated efforts to understand recovery from disturbances. Stressors causing disturbances (e.g., storms, heatwaves, boating) vary temporally and spatially within meadows potentially affecting recovery. To test differential recovery, we conducted a removal experiment at sites that differed in thermal stress for a temperate seagrass (Zostera marina). We also synthesized prior studies of seagrass recovery to assess general patterns. Seagrass shoots were removed from 28.3 m2 plots at edge and central sites of a meadow in South Bay, Virginia, USA. We hypothesized faster recovery for edge plots where greater oceanic exchange reduces thermal stress. Contrary to …
Toward A Biometric Privacy Act To Protect Individual Rights: What The United States Can Learn From The European Union And China, Sophia Hilsman
Toward A Biometric Privacy Act To Protect Individual Rights: What The United States Can Learn From The European Union And China, Sophia Hilsman
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The note examines the regulatory frameworks governing biometric AI technologies, particularly facial recognition, in the United States, China, and the European Union. It argues that the U.S. currently lacks comprehensive federal legislation to protect individuals' privacy and civil liberties in the face of advancing biometric technologies. The analysis advocates for a balanced regulatory approach that mitigates the risks of mass surveillance and erosion of privacy while allowing for beneficial uses of biometric AI. The author proposes that Congress should adopt federal legislation modeled after the EU's GDPR to establish a baseline for biometric data protection, ensuring consistency and stronger safeguards …
