Unpacking The Science Of Reading Research, Greta Rollo, Kellie Picker
Literacy and numeracy
The science of reading (SoR) is a term used for a body of evidence encompassing multi-disciplinary research from education, cognitive psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience. This evidence points to six key constructs that contribute to proficient reading: oral language, phonological awareness including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Research around these constructs provides researchers and teachers with an evidence base of the knowledge, skills and strategies involved in competent reading and describes how reading develops in both typical and atypical readers. This paper synthesises evidence reviews conducted by ACER researchers that unpack the science of reading. The aim of …

Moisture damage is one of the major defects in asphalt pavement, and will evolve into potholes in a short time which will affect traffic safety. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an effective non-destructive testing (NDT) method for detecting moisture damage but its data explanation replies on human experience and subjects to labor intensive. To address this issue, an automatic detection method based on extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) combined with Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization (BHPO) was proposed to detect moisture damage area from GPR traces. High frequency GPR antenna with 2.3 GHz was used to detect the moisture damage area from simulation, …

Drop Dynamics And Heat Transfer During Dropwise Condensation On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Shaur Humayun
Drop Dynamics And Heat Transfer During Dropwise Condensation On Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Shaur Humayun
Theses and Dissertations
As we seek to address the escalating demand for energy and water, superhydrophobic surfaces have gained the attention of researchers due to their potential to boost condensation heat transfer rates and improve efficiency across various applications. One way to significantly improve dropwise condensation heat transfer rate is to improve drop mobility. Water-repelling properties of superhydrophobic surfaces can help in reducing the size of condensed drops as they depart the surface, thus increasing drop refresh rates by increasing drop mobility. Accurate models of retention forces between drops and superhydrophobic surfaces are needed for predicting drop dynamics including drop mobility. Once drop …

The terms “offshore” and “open ocean” have been used to describe aquaculture sites that are further from the coast or in higher energy environments. Neither term has been clearly defined in the scientific literature nor in a legal context, and the terms are often used interchangeably. These and other related terms (for example “exposed”, “high-energy”) variously refer to aspects of a site such as the geographic distance from shore or infrastructure, the level of exposure to large waves and strong currents, the geographic fetch, the water depth, or some combination of these parameters. The ICES Working Group (ICES, 2024) on …

Social Media Presence And Innovation In Minority-Owned Small- And Medium-Sized Enterprises, Lionel Alexander Edlam Jr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Minority-owned (e.g., Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic, and women) small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for a small percentage of U.S. businesses in this sector. In this context, owners and managers of these businesses need to capitalize on social media to increase their marketplace survivability within the first 18 months of operation. The purpose of this quantitative correlation study, which was based on the technology acceptance model and absorptive capacity theory, was to examine whether the number of social media platforms presences predicts social strategy, customer involvement in innovation, and knowledge gained from customers for innovation in the United States. The …
Dissociation Of Reading And Naming In Ventral Occipitotemporal Cortex, Oscar Woolnough, Nitin Tandon
Dissociation Of Reading And Naming In Ventral Occipitotemporal Cortex, Oscar Woolnough, Nitin Tandon
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Lesions in the language-dominant ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOTC) can result in selective impairment of either reading or naming, resulting in alexia or anomia. Yet, functional imaging studies that show differential activation for naming and reading do not reveal activity exclusively tuned to one of these inputs. To resolve this dissonance in the functional architecture of the vOTC, we used focused stimulation to the vOTC in 49 adult patients during reading and naming, and generated a population-level, probabilistic map to evaluate if reading and naming are clearly dissociable within individuals. Language mapping (50 Hz, 2829 stimulations) was performed during passage reading …

Malposition Of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (Peg) Tube Through The Transverse Colon: A Novel Approach To Conservative Management, Joel Calafell
All Publications
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a common technique for enteral nutrition support. Complications range from skin injuries and leakage to more severe intraabdominal pathologies. This case report describes a patient with invasive right lateral pharyngeal wall squamous cell carcinoma who developed a gastrocolocutaneous fistula following PEG tube malpositioning in the transverse colon performed at an outside institution. Based on the patient's comorbidities and the associated high-risk nature of the surgery, a transverse colectomy and partial gastrectomy to resect the malpositioned tube followed by a new PEG tube was deemed invasive and would likely have a poor clinical outcome. Instead, the …

Asparaginase-based therapy is a cornerstone in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment, capitalizing on the methylation status of the asparagine synthetase (ASNS) gene, which renders ALL cells reliant on extracellular asparagine. Contrastingly, ASNS expression in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has not been thoroughly investigated, despite studies suggesting that AML with chromosome 7/7q deletions might have reduced ASNS levels. Here, we leverage reverse phase protein arrays to measure ASNS expression in 810 AML patients and assess its impact on outcomes. We find that AML with inv(16) has the lowest overall ASNS expression. While AML with deletion 7/7q had ASNS levels slightly lower …

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) affects roughly 1 in 7500 individuals. While at the population level there is a general pattern of affected muscles, there is substantial heterogeneity in muscle expression across- and within-patients. There can also be substantial variation in the pattern of fat and water signal intensity within a single muscle. While quantifying individual muscles across their full length using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) represents the optimal approach to follow disease progression and evaluate therapeutic response, the ability to automate this process has been limited. The goal of this work was to develop and optimize an artificial intelligence-based image …

Resettled Reproduction: A History And Analysis Of Family Planning Opportunities Among Refugees In Tennessee., Nicholas Lee Rummell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Refugee women face a myriad of barriers to health after resettlement, including access to family planning services. They often have little knowledge of available family planning or contraception options, or where to obtain them after resettlement. As a result, refugee women in Tennessee suffer from high rates of unintended pregnancies, stemming from limited access to family planning services, and unmet family planning needs after resettlement. This dissertation combines the disciplines of history, public health, and public administration/policy to better understand why refugee women in Tennessee have had limited access to family planning services. To achieve this, it was necessary to …

Understanding and treating human diseases require valid animal models. Leveraging the genetic diversity in rhesus macaque populations across eight primate centers in the United States, we conduct targeted-sequencing on 1845 individuals for 374 genes linked to inherited human retinal and neurodevelopmental diseases. We identify over 47,000 single nucleotide variants, a substantial proportion of which are shared with human populations. By combining rhesus and human allele frequencies with established variant prediction methods, we develop a machine learning-based score that outperforms established methods in predicting missense variant pathogenicity. Remarkably, we find a marked number of loss-of-function variants and putative deleterious variants, which …

CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing represents an exciting avenue to study genes of unknown function and can be combined with genetically encoded tools such as fluorescent proteins, channelrhodopsins, DREADDs, and various biosensors to more deeply probe the function of these genes in different cell types. However, current strategies to also manipulate or visualize edited cells are challenging due to the large size of Cas9 proteins and the limited packaging capacity of adeno-associated viruses (AAVs). To overcome these constraints, we developed an alternative gene editing strategy using a single AAV vector and mouse lines that express Cre-dependent Cas9 to achieve efficient cell-type specific …

Back To The Future? How The Global Powers And The Local Militias Hindered Un Multi-Dimensional Mediation In The Libyan And Syrian Civil Wars After 2011, Ahmed S. Mahdi, Melissia Shapib, Noura Gamie
Future Journal of Social Science
UN mediation efforts in the Libyan and Syrian civil wars, which followed the Arab Revolutions of 2011, were hampered by the great power intervention, and by the belligerents' insistence on solving the problem through military victory instead of negotiation. There is a shortage in the literature which examines an alternative, or how UN mediation can be improved. One of the few models to assess, and improve, UN mediation in civil wars is the so-called Kane Model (2022). Using the model presented by Kane to assess the procedures of a powerful UN mediation process in internationalized civil wars, this paper argues …

Future Journal of Social Science
This study aims at pointing out the tools of peace and the approaches to conflict management and resolution presented in the Islamic and Western perspectives. It also searches for clarifying the convergent and divergent zones that could help in finding, analyzing and criticizing the basic concepts on which arguments and debates are constructed. This study concluded that the differences between the Islamic and the Western perspective are a human requirement for acquainting and integrating based on a crucial notion, which is identity. Identity is treated in details in many discourses and occupies a large place in the Western literature on …

AKMA (Authentication and Key Management for Applications) is an authentication mechanism introduced in Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Technical Specification (TS) 33.535, Release 16 (and further enhanced in later releases) that can be used to leverage an operator authentication infrastructure to secure communications between a user equipment (UE) and an Application Function (AF). Proposed herein are techniques to facilitate UE authentication for multi-tenant cloud environments. Broadly, techniques proposed herein provide for using a tenant identifier (ID) associated with the eSIM (electronic or embedded Subscriber Identity Module) of a UE in order to determine/obtain the correct policy that corresponds to a …

Background
Individuals with chronic diseases often search for health information online. The Diabetes Online Community (DOC) is an active community with members who exchange health information; however, few studies have examined health information brokering in the DOC.
Objective
The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Attitudes Toward Seeking Health Information Online (ATSHIO) scale in a sample of adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Methods
People with T1D were recruited through the DOC, specifically Facebook and Twitter. They were provided with a Qualtrics link to complete the survey. This was a mixed methods study that used thematic …

Nonenzymatic glycation (NEG) unfolds and crosslinks proteins, resulting in aggregation. Label-free evaluation of such structural changes, without disturbing molecular integrity, would be beneficial for understanding the fundamental mechanisms of protein aggregation. The current study demonstrates the assessment of NEG-induced protein aggregation by combining autofluorescence (AF) spectroscopy and imaging. The methylglyoxal (MG) induced protein unfolding and the formation of cross-linking advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) leading to aggregation were evaluated using deep-UV-induced-autofluorescence (dUV-AF) spectroscopy in proteins with distinct structural characteristics. Since the AGEs formed on proteins are fluorescent, the study demonstrated the possibility of autofluorescence imaging of NEG-induced protein aggregates. Autofluorescence spectroscopy …
