School Counselors’ Perceptions And Descriptions Of Their Career Counseling Efforts For Non-Honor Roll Students In Career Management, Sherlette C. Burkhalter
School Counselors’ Perceptions And Descriptions Of Their Career Counseling Efforts For Non-Honor Roll Students In Career Management, Sherlette C. Burkhalter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High-quality career counseling is freely available at U.S. high schools. However, many students choose not to participate in career planning programs, despite being assigned to a school counselor for guidance. There is a projected increase in demand for school counselors; however, there needs to be more literature regarding whether high school students are taking advantage of career planning and how counselors cope with and manage their role in implementing career counseling programs. The purpose of this study was to explore school counselors’ perceptions and descriptions of their career counseling efforts for non-honor roll students in career management. The theoretical framework …

We investigated the growth dynamics of hydroponic lettuce (Lactuca sativa) driven by the influence that potassium (K+) has on crop growth. This study aimed to determine whether increased K+ concentrations under different daily light integrals (DLIs) in a hydroponic system will boost growth of greenhouse lettuce. This study was conducted within a controlled glass greenhouse environment with varying DLIs achieved by integrating an adaptive lighting control system over a 16-hour photoperiod. We used three K+ treatments of 200, 400, or 600 mg⋅L−1 K+ and six DLI lighting treatments of 11.1, 12.9, 14.6, …

The Impact Of Liberia’S Post-War Public Housing Policy On Homelessness, Bofor Rahim Toh, Ii
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is an inadequacy in strategies to address homeless and vulnerable youth “Zogos” in post-war Liberia. Homelessness among youth is a severe problem in post-war Liberia, with many sleeping in Palm Groove Cemetery and other informal housing settings in Monrovia and other parts of the country. This qualitative study explored post-war Liberia’s public housing program policy roles that professional competency and human capacity play in effectively mitigating homelessness of youth in Monrovia. Glasser’s choice theory was the theoretical framework used for this study. The research question explored how human capacity, selection eligibility, and professional competency at the National Housing Authority …
Non-Surgical Bleeding And Transurethral Resection Of The Prostate (Turp) Syndrome After Turp Surgery: A Case Report And Literature Review, Akram M. Eraky, Sidney C. Rubenstein, Adnan Khan, Yasser Mokhtar, Nicole Gregorich
Non-Surgical Bleeding And Transurethral Resection Of The Prostate (Turp) Syndrome After Turp Surgery: A Case Report And Literature Review, Akram M. Eraky, Sidney C. Rubenstein, Adnan Khan, Yasser Mokhtar, Nicole Gregorich
GME Publications
Patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) surgery can develop TURP syndrome and post-TURP bleeding. Post-TURP bleeding can be surgical, from arteries or venous sinuses, or non-surgical, due to coagulopathy preventing clot formation. Non-surgical post-TURP bleeding may be due to high concentrations of urokinase and tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in the urine that cause fibrinolytic changes and increase bleeding risk. Urine urokinase and tPA may have both local and systemic fibrinolytic effects that may prevent blood clot formation locally at the site of surgery, and cause fibrinolytic changes systemically through leaking into the blood stream. Another post-TURP complication that …
Two Essays On Auditor Ostracism And Authenticity, Kehinde Mayokun Ogunade
Two Essays On Auditor Ostracism And Authenticity, Kehinde Mayokun Ogunade
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The first essay investigates whether auditor race and voice have an impact on perceived ostracism. Drawing on social identity theory, I hypothesize that race and auditor voice could lead to feelings of ostracism and that authenticity will moderate the relationship between auditor race, voice, and ostracism. Using a 2×2 between-subject design, my findings indicate that auditor race does not have a significant impact on feelings of ostracism, whereas auditors feel more ostracized if they do not speak up. Additional analysis using the Hayes process model finds that authenticity moderates the relationship between auditor race and ostracism, even though race does …

In the first essay, using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, I estimate the impact of breastfeeding initiation and duration on multiple cognitive, health, and behavioral outcomes spanning early childhood through adolescence. To mitigate the potential bias, I employ a doubly robust (DR) estimation method, addressing misspecification in either the treatment or outcome models while adjusting for selection effects. My novel approach is to use and evaluate a battery of supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms to improve propensity score (PS) estimates. I demonstrate that the gradient boosting machine algorithm removes bias more effectively and minimizes other prediction errors …

This document serves as an analysis of Eugene Bozza's Dix-Huit Études en Forme d'Improvisation pour Cor (1961), translated to Eighteen Etudes in the Form of Improvisation for Horn for the purposes of this document. I found and documented all motifs within the eighteen etudes, and categorized connections between them and Bozza's compositional ouerve as displayed in Dr. Lois Kuyper-Rushing's A Thematic Index of the Works of Bozza. My research takes inspiration from Dr. Kuyper-Rushing's work as well as Dr. Hsing-Fang Liu's research involving Bozza's use of “Adoptive Transcription”, or taking old melodies from previous works and using them in new …

The Imposter Phenomenon In Graduate Students: A Social Constructionist Perspective Using Narrative Inquiry, Colin Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A narrative inquiry study explored six graduate students’ experiences of "imposter syndrome” during their graduate studies. Semi-structured interviews occurred with each participant at two time points: one initial interview and a follow-up interview to discuss the impact of the initial interview and to perform member checking. Each interview was analyzed individually to create summative narrative of their unique experiences of imposter feelings. Interviews were also analyzed on a study-wide level to explore common threads of the “imposter syndrome” in graduate school. Results suggested imposter feelings in graduate students were related to the ability to discuss imposter feelings with others, program …
A Historical, Rhetorical And Prescriptive Analysis Of The Iconic Black Eulogy As Prophetic Rhetoric, Pierre Louis Vincent
A Historical, Rhetorical And Prescriptive Analysis Of The Iconic Black Eulogy As Prophetic Rhetoric, Pierre Louis Vincent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
While the rhetorical structure of the Black eulogy is rooted in the Aristotelian genre of eulogy in the Greek tradition, it continues to develop beyond that tradition in response to American socio-cultural exigencies that shape it. The Black eulogy has matured rhetorically through the hardships of slavery, structural oppression, and institutionalized violence to develop a prophetic rhetorical path to succor and give hope to a community weary from the diurnal inequities of oppression made palpable at the death of African American icons. Using a close reading, this study establishes the Black eulogy’s rhetorical foundation in the Aristotelian rhetorical genre, while …

Role Of Sds-22/Pp1 Phosphatase In Polarizing The Germplasm Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Embryo, Aparna Nurni Ravi
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
During asymmetric cell division, cell polarity and cell cycle are tightly coupled to ensure robust segregation of cell fate determinants and generation of cellular diversity. In the one-cell C. elegans embryo, multiple cell cycle kinases regulate cell polarization and posterior segregation of germline fate determinants (germplasm). For example, PLK-1 kinase inhibits the retention of its germplasm substrate POS-1 in the anterior, driving POS-1 segregation to the posterior (Han et al., 2018). Additionally, MBK-2 kinase disassembles P granules in the anterior through phosphorylation of the P granule scaffold MEG-3, helping to drive P granule segregation to the posterior (Wang et al., …

The functional properties of RNA binding proteins (RBPs) require allosteric regulation through interdomain communication. Despite the importance of allostery to biological regulation, only a few studies have been conducted to describe the biophysical nature by which interdomain communication manifests in RBPs. Here, we show for hnRNP A1 that interdomain communication is vital for the unique stability of its amino-terminal domain, which consists of two RNA recognition motifs (RRMs). These RRMs exhibit drastically different stability under pressure. RRM2 unfolds as an individual domain but remains stable when appended to RRM1. Variants that disrupt interdomain communication between the tandem RRMs show a …

Development And Initial Validation Of The Musical Discrimination And Styles Task: Measuring Children And Adolescent Music Aptitude And Achievement, Dawn R. Mitchell White
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation had two purposes: 1) to create and document the development of a new music achievement test entitled the Musical Discrimination and Styles Task (MDAST), and 2) to describe the strength of the evidence supporting the validity and reliability of this new developmentally appropriate music aptitude and achievement instrument. I created a theoretical framework based on 1) the cognitive theory of child development of Jean Piaget, 2) the phase model of artistic development by David Hargreaves, and 3) the theoretical models of music discrimination, audiation, and music achievement by Edwin Gordon. The MDAST’s design assessed students’ abilities to evaluate …
Impact Of Containment And Elevation On Created Marsh Plant Community And Ecosystem Dynamics, Kevin R. Stoner
Impact Of Containment And Elevation On Created Marsh Plant Community And Ecosystem Dynamics, Kevin R. Stoner
LSU Master's Theses
Coastal marsh restoration is increasing globally, as marshes are impacted by anthropogenic impacts. Billions of dollars are allocated to marsh restoration in the Mississippi River delta where wetland loss rates are extremely high. The recovery of structural and functional attributes of created marshes varies by attribute measured and project. Here, two marshes created in 2018 and one natural marsh were used to examine how variations in hydrologic connectivity and marsh elevation influence subsurface hydrology and salinity, vegetation community structure, soil properties, accretion, and denitrification. I established a comparative field study in a created marsh contained within a higher elevation containment …
Pulmonary Osteoclast-Like Cells In Silica Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis, Yoshihiro Hasegawa, Steven L Teitelbaum, Et Al.
Pulmonary Osteoclast-Like Cells In Silica Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis, Yoshihiro Hasegawa, Steven L Teitelbaum, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The pathophysiology of silicosis is poorly understood, limiting development of therapies for those who have been exposed to the respirable particle. We explored mechanisms of silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis in human lung samples collected from patients with occupational exposure to silica and in a longitudinal mouse model of silicosis using multiple modalities including whole-lung single-cell RNA sequencing and histological, biochemical, and physiologic assessments. In addition to pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis, intratracheal silica challenge induced osteoclast-like differentiation of alveolar macrophages and recruited monocytes, driven by induction of the osteoclastogenic cytokine, receptor activator of nuclear factor κΒ ligand (RANKL) in pulmonary lymphocytes, and …
A Rehabilitation Of The Body As Home: Reconstructing Young’S Feminist Phenomenology, Amanda Nicole C. Collantes
A Rehabilitation Of The Body As Home: Reconstructing Young’S Feminist Phenomenology, Amanda Nicole C. Collantes
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This essay investigates Iris Marion Young’s account of female bodily experience and reconstructs her feminist phenomenology with the aim of reinterpreting and enriching the tradition of embodiment using feminist critique. It offers a clearer, more cohesive reconstruction of Young’s phenomenology by referencing three essays where she considers a particular aspect of women’s lived bodily experiences. It considers three recurring themes that appear in and are developed in the three main essays by Young referred to throughout the study. It presents personal, lived experience as political, thus encouraging social cooperation and women’s solidarity through collective meaning-making and a recovery of our …
Immanuel Kant’S Transcendental Idealism: On The Possibility Of Freedom In A Deterministic World, Anamarie R. Avecilla
Immanuel Kant’S Transcendental Idealism: On The Possibility Of Freedom In A Deterministic World, Anamarie R. Avecilla
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Freedom is a central question in Philosophy. It has always been asked: How do determinism and freedom cohere in a human being? How can the fact that humans exist and undertake life projects in a thoroughgoingly deterministic world be reconciled with the claim that human acts remain free and efficacious? This work explores the problem of freedom and determinism using Kant’s answer in the Third Antinomy in the Kritik der reinen Vernunft, and using Transcendental Idealism as epistemological framework for a possible resolution to this problem. If one could assume with Kant that what we know are not things in …

Pharmacological Supplements Efficacy In Management Of Chronic Pain Associated With Sickle Cell Disease: A Narrative Review, Ahmad Al-Jalehawi, Samer Imad Mohammed
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary ailment that can cause severe pain and suffering to people who are affected. However, with continued investment in research and treatment options, we can make progress towards improving the lives of those with SCD. Over 40% of patients experience painful vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs), so we must work towards finding solutions and providing support for those living with this condition, These episodes, a hallmark of SCD, significantly contribute to morbidity, mortality, and a diminished quality of life, while also incurring substantial healthcare costs. Chronic pain particularly affects older adolescents and adults with SCD, with …

This research is based on a trans-European research project aimed at enhancing software design and engineering practices to promote inclusivity, involving stakeholders from academia, industry, and disability advocacy services. To explore the nature and meaning of inclusion, a number of different approaches to inclusion are outlined, including models of equitable design (Accessible Design, Inclusive Design, Universal Design, and Design for All), User Design processes (Co-Production, Co-Creation, User-Centred Design, Co-Design, and Participatory Design), and Software Engineering Methodologies (Linear, Spiral, and Agile). These three categories of models are combined to form a three-dimensional environment in which software development projects can be mapped …

The Moderating Effect Of Organizational Identification And Supervisor’S Organizational Embodiment On Unethical Pro- Organizational Behavior, Taylor Morgan Flinn
The Moderating Effect Of Organizational Identification And Supervisor’S Organizational Embodiment On Unethical Pro- Organizational Behavior, Taylor Morgan Flinn
Theses and Dissertations
Unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) are behaviors that are illegal/immoral but are engaged in with the intention of benefiting their organization. The present study sought to investigate the moderating relationships of organizational identification (OI) and supervisor’s organizational embodiment (SOE), with work engagement as a predictor. The results revealed that there was a weak correlation between work engagement and UPB as well as SOE and UPB. Both OI and SOE did not moderate the relationship between work engagement and UPB. The current study contributed to the literature on predictors of UPB, as work engagement has rarely been used as a predictor of …

The Role Of Working Memory And Organizational Skills In Academic Functioning For Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder., Alissa M. Cole, Elizabeth S.M. Chan, Fatou Gaye, Sherelle L. Harmon, Michael J. Kofler
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Objective: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit difficulties with organizational skills such as task planning, managing materials, and organizing activities that have downstream consequences on academic functioning. At the same time, deficits in working memory have been linked with both the organizational skills difficulties and academic underachievement and underperformance observed in children with ADHD and have been hypothesized to account for the link between organizational and academic functioning. However, the extent to which working memory and organizational skills independently versus jointly contribute to ADHD-related academic difficulties remains unclear. Method: The present study is the first to examine the unique and …
Improving Hypertension For Veterans Utilizing Measure Properly, Assessment Of Pharmacology, Alternative Therapy Interest, Routine Outreach, Partner With The Veteran Protocol (Maarp): A Pilot Study, Alyssa S. Dudley
Dissertations
The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to create a hypertension control protocol for the patient aligned care teams (PACT) to follow when a Veteran presents to the primary care clinic (PCC) with uncontrolled hypertension. Despite past interventions, uncontrolled hypertension was still problematic in the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Healthcare System. Past and present research suggested that the Veteran population was at higher risk of developing hypertension than those of the civilian population. In hopes to reduce uncontrolled hypertension in the VA's PCCs, the Measure Properly, Assessment of Pharmacology, Alternative Medication Interests, Routine Outreach, and Partner with …

Study The Global Earthquake Patterns That Follow The St. Patrick’S Day Geomagnetic Storms Of 2013 And 2015, Dimitar Ouzounov, Galina Khachikyan
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
A response of global seismic activity to the geomagnetic storms of St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) in 2013 and 2015 is investigated. These two storms occurred during nearly identical storm sudden commencement times and similar solar flux levels. We have revealed a rather similar pattern of the most substantial earthquakes that have occurred since these storms. Two major crust continental earthquakes, in Iran (M = 7.7), 16 April 2013, and in Nepal (M = 7.8), 25 April 2015, have occurred with a time delay of ~30 and ~39 days after geomagnetic storm onsets in 2013 and 2015, respectively. After that, …
