Sensorimotor Grounding In Novel Word Acquisition, John Michael Hollander Jul 2024

Sensorimotor Grounding In Novel Word Acquisition, John Michael Hollander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Embodied models of language comprehension assume that words become associated with sensorimotor experiences during word learning. Novel word learning paradigms may provide insight into embodied effects, but studies in this domain have yet to account for how concepts and information known in first language (L1) might influence the sensorimotor encoding of new words and concepts. Further, research on embodiment and bilingualism suggests that second language semantic representations involve sensorimotor encoding, but because participants in these studies are already proficiently bilingual, the manner and degree to which L1 information influences newly learned word representations remain unclear. The experiments in this dissertation …

Algorithmic Methods For Metagenomic Data Analysis, Diem Trang Pham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

DNA sequencing technologies have transformed genomics, allowing for the decoding of genetic information stored within an organism's DNA. Recent advances in Next-Generation Sequencing technologies (NGS) provide great opportunities to obtain, analyze, and understand genetic information of many species. Using NGS, researchers can obtain millions fragments of DNA, known as \textit{reads}, from different environments. Metagenomics, a study of DNA from environmental samples, explores microbial taxonomy and function. Analyzing metagenomic data is an important problem as recent studies shows the relation of microbial composition to certain diseases or disorders of human health. This task can be computationally expensive since microbial communities usually …

Woven Fabrics For Composite Reinforcement: A Review, Indraneel Chowdhury, John Summerscales

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Fibres in different textile forms (woven, knitted, stitched, and non-crimp) are used to reinforce composites for multifaced applications, including automotive, aerospace, marine, rail, energy, construction, and defence sectors. Textile fabric-based fibre reinforcements for composites possess some outstanding features, such as good dimensional stability, subtle conformability, deep draw moldability/processability, lightweightness, high strength and stiffness, and low cost. The greatest advantage of textile fibre-reinforced composites is the freedom to tailor their strength and stiffness properties for specific applications. Therefore, the design of composites involves defining the fabric geometry, stacking sequence, and orientation of fibres to optimise the system. Compared to knitted, stitched, …

Three-Dimensional Medical Image Registration With Applications In Proton Therapy, Rui Liao Jul 2024

Three-Dimensional Medical Image Registration With Applications In Proton Therapy, Rui Liao

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Three-dimensional deformable image registration (DIR) is an important technique in medical imaging, facilitating the alignment of images acquired from different sources or at different times for clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. In clinical proton therapy dose planning, dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has notably improved the accuracy of estimating the stopping-power ratio map, reducing proton beam range uncertainty. To address the inter-scan motion artifacts inherent in sequential DECT acquisition, we propose a novel motion-compensation scheme to incorporate a three-dimensional DIR method into the joint statistical iterative DECT reconstruction algorithm. We successfully demonstrate that inter-scan motion corrections can be integrated into the …

AU Long-read: Pleaseconfirmthatallheadinglevelsarerepresentedcorrectly sequencing is driving rapid progress in genome assembly : across all major groups of life, including species of the family Drosophilidae, a longtime model system for genetics, genomics, and evolution. We previously developed a cost-effective hybrid Oxford Nanopore (ONT) long-read and Illumina short-read sequencing approach and used it to assemble 101 drosophilid genomes from laboratory cultures, greatly increasing the number of genome assemblies for this taxonomic group. The next major challenge is to address the laboratory culture bias in taxon sampling by sequencing genomes of species that cannot easily be reared in the lab. Here, we build …

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are among the most common human congenital birth defects. Previous multiethnic studies have identified dozens of associated loci for both cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) and cleft palate alone (CP). Although several nearby genes have been highlighted, the "casual" variants are largely unknown. Here, we developed DeepFace, a convolutional neural network model, to assess the functional impact of variants by SNP activity difference (SAD) scores. The DeepFace model is trained with 204 epigenomic assays from crucial human embryonic craniofacial developmental stages of post-conception week (pcw) 4 to pcw 10. The Pearson correlation coefficient between …

Woman And Death In Nineteenth Century America, Kathleen Boswell Jul 2024

Woman And Death In Nineteenth Century America, Kathleen Boswell

History in the Making

The nineteenth century saw a shift in the perceptions of death, as historians have noted how Victorian peoples (1837-1901) had a strange fixation with morbidity that we today find odd. This article seeks to understand these fixations with death within the context of nineteenth-century femininity, or what has been termed the Cult of Domesticity. As the topic of women and death is sparse, the examinations of leading death historians are compared while some new historical perspectives are used to address some gaps between death and domesticity. The context of Victorian societal norms is examined, along with popular mourning practices and …

A Question Of Womanhood, Ayden Kelly Jul 2024

A Question Of Womanhood, Ayden Kelly

History in the Making

Ideologies surrounding gender and sexuality have shifted drastically within the past several decades as cultural perspectives broaden to be more inclusive of individuals belonging to communities, all with unique lived experiences. Recent discourses around womanhood and who is considered as “woman enough” have caused intercommunal tensions between White women, women of color, and LGBT+ women. This essay will explore how the rhetoric around who is and who is not a ‘real’ woman has remained the same but not which groups it has targeted, as well as examine the history of the conditional nature of womanhood from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Visualization For Unmanned Aerial Systems In Bridge Inspections, Kristoffer B. Borgen, John Mott Jul 2024

Computational Fluid Dynamics Visualization For Unmanned Aerial Systems In Bridge Inspections, Kristoffer B. Borgen, John Mott

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Bridge inspections are an expensive and time-consuming process, varying significantly with a bridge’s style, height, width, and length. Inspections create interruptions that interfere with bridge use, as the examination requires partial or total closure, causing traffic delays. Unmanned aerial system (UAS) use has increased significantly over the past decade, including assistance and coordination during bridge inspections. However, the impact on a UAS from high winds and turbulent airflows induced by a bridge’s structure can decrease flight safety during inspections. Visualization of these hazards is difficult for UAS operators; therefore, a process to estimate the velocity and locations of these hazardous …

Energy Safety Management: A Training Model To Improve Flight Safety, Juan R. Merkt, Matthijs H. J. Amelink, David G. Sizoo

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Failing to properly manage an airplane’s energy state can be unforgiving. Mismanagement of mechanical energy (altitude and/or airspeed) is a contributing factor to three common types of fatal accidents in aviation: loss of control in flight, approach and landing accidents, and controlled flight into terrain. Recognizing the importance of energy management, the Federal Aviation Administration has incorporated new elements into the Airman Certification Standards, emphasizing knowledge of energy management concepts and the consequences of mishandling an airplane’s energy state. Unfortunately, no adequate guidance has been available in terms of defining key energy management concepts or suggesting how these should be …

Analogous Response Redux: Vladimir Putin’S Aspirations For Altering The Maritime Balance, Jerome J. Burke Jul 2024

Analogous Response Redux: Vladimir Putin’S Aspirations For Altering The Maritime Balance, Jerome J. Burke

Newport Papers

Analogous Response was a term of analytical shorthand that American strategists and intelligence analysts developed in late 1983 and early 1984. The term characterized in two words a Soviet maritime strategy of deploying off the U.S. coast submarines armed with nuclear SLCMs. By making that deployment, the Soviet leadership could establish an endo-atmospheric nuclear threat to the continental United States (CONUS) that Marshal Nikolay V. Ogarkov, chief of the General Staff of the USSR, described as follows: “The Soviet systems to be deployed in the oceans and seas and relevant to the territory of the United States itself will be …
