The application of deep learning (DL) in medicine introduces transformative tools with the potential to enhance prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment planning. However, ensuring transparent documentation is essential for researchers to enhance reproducibility and refine techniques. Our study addresses the unique challenges presented by DL in medical imaging by developing a comprehensive checklist using the Delphi method to enhance reproducibility and reliability in this dynamic field. We compiled a preliminary checklist based on a comprehensive review of existing checklists and relevant literature. A panel of 11 experts in medical imaging and DL assessed these items using Likert scales, with two survey …
"Doing Their Own Thing": The Impact Of Second-Wave Feminism At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Sarah Drivon
"Doing Their Own Thing": The Impact Of Second-Wave Feminism At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Sarah Drivon
Master's Theses
Second-Wave Feminism was largely responsible for transforming American society’s beliefs about gender roles. However, there is very little attention given to the impact that feminism had on cultural transformations in the South. Much of the historiography of feminism and women’s liberation only covers the most radical events and leaders of the 1970s, and it neglects to point out the smaller forms of resistance that ultimately made the movement successful. During this period, the South, and specifically southern campuses, had the reputation of being against women’s liberation because there was not much evidence of resistance comparable to that of northern campuses. …
Promoting Greater Granularity In Climate Research: A Case Study Analyzing Perceptions Of Anthropogenic Climate Change Among Students, Faculty, And Staff At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Kelly Wegmann
Master's Theses
Anthropogenic climate change is a global concern that has the possibility to become the next world-altering event. While there is a substantial amount of scientific evidence proving its existence and harmful repercussions, there is still a lack of belief in its occurrence within the United States. This research uses survey data obtained from the University of Southern Mississippi to provide an understanding at a local scale of how both physical and psychological aspects bridge a gap in perception research.
With the use of previous research done by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC) and George Mason University Center …

On An Unshakeable Foundation: An Archaeological Investigation Of The Postemancipation Black Community Of Bass Street, The Church They Built, And The Lasting Identity They Formed In Nashville, Tennessee, Clélie Elizabeth Cottle Peacock
Master's Theses
The Bass Street Community lived along the northern base of St. Cloud Hill in Nashville, just below the Civil War-era Union fortification, Fort Negley. The fort was built and defended by conscripted free, enslaved, and self-emancipated Black/African Americans and soldiers from the U.S. Colored Troops; some of whom stayed, built residences, founded a church, and established a shared community identity. The objects they left behind reflect a time of transition in the postemancipation urban South.
The former Bass Street Community enclave is a subset of the Fort Negley archaeological site (40DV189). My thesis examines artifacts from the Bass Street Baptist …
Female Criminal Agency In Early Fourteenth-Century Norfolk, Anna K. Davis
Female Criminal Agency In Early Fourteenth-Century Norfolk, Anna K. Davis
Masters Theses
Medieval women who were on the wrong side of the law expressed agency in a specific and unusual manner. Criminal agency, as it were, was a way for them to express their wants and desires in a way that is no less valid a subject of study than actions that were legally permissible. However, this agency was constrained by medieval notions of women’s capability. This thesis examines women and their crimes found in an early fourteenth-century Norfolk gaol delivery roll to further understand how the men who ran gaol delivery “allowed” women to be criminal. As gaol delivery rolls were …

Vengeance As Piety: The Heroic And Elegiac Devil Of Genesis B, Alisa Heskin
Masters Theses
In Christian theology, the fall of Lucifer and his fellow rebel angels details the origins of angelic sin and prefigures the fall of humanity. The narrative had a strong literary tradition in early medieval England, appearing frequently in both poetry and prose. The Junius manuscript, one of four codices preserving the majority of Old English poetry, contains three accounts of the fall of the angels, with the most extensive versions being found in the poems known by scholars as Genesis B and Christ and Satan. Much of the scholarly attention Genesis B receives pertains to its interpolation into the longer …
Promoting Preschool Teachers’ Maintenance And Generalization Of Behavior-Specific Praise Through Multitiered Consultation, Claudia Abril Ochoa
Promoting Preschool Teachers’ Maintenance And Generalization Of Behavior-Specific Praise Through Multitiered Consultation, Claudia Abril Ochoa
Master's Theses
Teachers struggle to provide behavior-specific praise (BSP), which is associated with appropriate classroom management and decreases in student’s problem behavior. The current study used a multiple-baseline design across three Head Start teachers to test the effectiveness of the multitiered consultation model in increasing teachers’ BSP. The Head Start center provided a universal training in classroom management strategies, including BSP. Three teachers who were not implementing this strategy consistently (i.e., less than five instances in a 10-min observation) received Tier 2 supports including goal setting paired with a simple prompt. Data about teachers’ use of BSP was collected class-wide at a …
Effects Of Increasing Cycling Cadence On Post-Cycling Gait Velocity: An Experimental Study, Nitu Lama
Effects Of Increasing Cycling Cadence On Post-Cycling Gait Velocity: An Experimental Study, Nitu Lama
Master's Theses
Previous research has shown that increasing cycling cadence, rather than the workrate, can result in improved post-cycling gait velocity. However, the specific threshold of cycling cadence required to bring about clinically meaningful changes in gait velocity remains unknown. To address this knowledge gap, our study aimed to determine the minimum incremental increase in cycling cadence that would lead to a significant improvement in post-cycling gait velocity. A total of 42 young adults participated in our study and were randomly assigned to one of three groups: TEN, TWENTY, and THIRTY. Each group was assigned to cycle at a cadence at the …
An Examination Of The Strong Start Intervention To Support The Pro-Social Behaviors In At-Risk Head Start Students, Merrick Mcevoy
An Examination Of The Strong Start Intervention To Support The Pro-Social Behaviors In At-Risk Head Start Students, Merrick Mcevoy
Master's Theses
Children from lower-income and diverse families are at a higher risk for social-emotional and academic difficulties. Implementation of early childhood interventions plays a crucial role in the healthy development of children’s social-emotional development. Merrell’s Strong Kids (Merrell et al., 2009), a commonly used SEL class-wide intervention, facilitates learning of the five core SEL components through weekly lessons and has been shown to have long-term improvements on children’s internalizing symptoms, social and emotional knowledge, student-teacher relationships, prosocial behaviors, and is well received by teachers. The current study examined the efficacy of Strong Kids implemented as a one-on-one intervention, rather than a …
The Relationship Between Overparenting, Psychological Needs Satisfaction, And Alcohol Use On Risky Sexual Behavior, Melanie Prater
The Relationship Between Overparenting, Psychological Needs Satisfaction, And Alcohol Use On Risky Sexual Behavior, Melanie Prater
Master's Theses
Studies have shown college students to be vulnerable to negative outcomes, including engaging in risky alcohol use (Lewis et al., 2014; Kilwein & Looby, 2018; Cui et al., 2019) and risky sexual behavior (Dir et al, 2014; Trub & Stark, 2017; Kilwien & Looby, 2018). Understanding predictors and mediating variables associated with risky sexual behavior is one important means of improving prevention strategies. Parenting may be one variable associated with risky sex. Overparenting, a parenting style characterized by parental overinvolvement, has received recent attention due to its association with poor outcomes for adolescents and emerging adults, including an increased risk …
Exploring Overbank Sediment Deposition Variation In Heavily Modified Floodplains Of The Lower Mississippi River: A Sedimentological And Geophysical Analysis, Seth Fradella
Master's Theses
Since the 1930s, the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) has experienced large-scale modifications to the channel profile and surrounding floodplains through dams, dikes, revetments, dredging, and channel cutoffs. Although these changes have improved navigation and reduced flood risk, unanticipated changes to the major flood return period, individual flood severity and duration, and sediment regime have become increasingly apparent and sometimes problematic, such as the 2011 and 2018-2020 floods. Flood control levees along the LMR have reduced the natural floodplain area by 70-90%, resulting in heavily restricted overbank storage capacity of water and sediment. For the same flood events in recent history, …

Smart Zoning Control For Air Conditioning Systems, Octavio Gomes Diaz
Smart Zoning Control For Air Conditioning Systems, Octavio Gomes Diaz
Mechanical Engineering Theses
Nearly 45% of the energy consumed in residential buildings goes for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Typical HVAC systems are mostly controlled by one thermostat that is usually located in the living room. This means that the HVAC system is running without consideration of the thermal conditions in the other rooms (zones), which might be colder (or warmer). Colder zones in the summer indicate that a lot of energy is wasted, and warmer zones mean that the HVAC system can’t produce a good comfort level. Therefore, zoning was introduced into relatively recent HVAC systems. Zoning in HVAC systems uses …

A Survey On Homomorphic Encryption Based On The Learning With Rounding Problem, Jose Manuel Montoya
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Much of modern day cryptography deals with the notion of security and efficiency. The main concern with any cryptosystem deals with the practicality of being able to implement any encryption algorithm over large data sets. In this paper, we will look at the various properties of the Learning With Rounding problem (LWR) which comes from the Learning With Errors problem (LWE) first introduced by Oded Regev. We will also present the topic of Homomorphic Encryption (HE) as well as its three variants: Partially Homomorphic Encryption (PHE), Somewhat Homomorphic Encryption (SHE), and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). This paper also highlights SABER, …

Analyzing The Losses And Gains Of A Land Category: Insights From The Total Operating Characteristic, Thomas Mumuni Bilintoh, Robert Gilmore Pontius, Zhen Liu
Geography
This manuscript provides guidance concerning how to use the Total Operating Characteristic (TOC) when (1) analyzing change through time, (2) ranking a categorical independent variable, and (3) constraining the extent for a gaining category. The illustrative variable is the marsh land-cover category in the Plum Island Ecosystems of northeastern Massachusetts, USA. The data are an elevation map and maps showing the land categories of water, marsh, and upland in 1938, 1971, and 2013. There were losses and gains near the edge of the marsh between 1938 and 1972 and between 1972 and 2013. The TOC curves show that marsh gained …

Methods And Metacognition: Teaching An Historically And Culturally Responsive Holocaust Unit, Katie Sluiter
Dissertations
While at least forty-seven states have legislation around teaching the Holocaust and/or genocide to secondary students (grades 6-12), this curriculum is typically housed in the social studies departments of most districts; however, there are many English language arts teachers who either choose to teach Holocaust literature alongside their social studies counterparts, or create stand-alone Holocaust units around both informational texts and literature.
This study centers around the author’s own Holocaust unit taught to eighth-grade honors ELA students in an urban, Title I school district. The unit is used as an artifact to examine two aspects of a successful unit on …

Value-Based Subgoal Discovery And Path Planning For Reaching Long-Horizon Goals, Shubham Pateria, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chai Quek
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning to reach long-horizon goals in spatial traversal tasks is a significant challenge for autonomous agents. Recent subgoal graph-based planning methods address this challenge by decomposing a goal into a sequence of shorter-horizon subgoals. These methods, however, use arbitrary heuristics for sampling or discovering subgoals, which may not conform to the cumulative reward distribution. Moreover, they are prone to learning erroneous connections (edges) between subgoals, especially those lying across obstacles. To address these issues, this article proposes a novel subgoal graph-based planning method called learning subgoal graph using value-based subgoal discovery and automatic pruning (LSGVP). The proposed method uses a …

An anonymous transit pass system allows passengers to access transport services within fixed time periods, with their privileges automatically deactivating upon time expiration. Although existing transit pass systems are deployable on powerful devices like PCs, their adaptation to more user-friendly devices, such as mobile phones with smart cards, is inefficient due to their reliance on heavy-weight operations like bilinear maps. In this paper, we introduce an innovative anonymous transit pass system, dubbed Anopas, optimized for deployment on mobile phones with smart cards, where the smart card is responsible for crucial lightweight operations and the mobile phone handles key-independent and time-consuming …

Large Language Models (LLMs) have transformed code completion tasks, providing context-based suggestions to boost developer productivity in software engineering. As users often fine-tune these models for specific applications, poisoning and backdoor attacks can covertly alter the model outputs. To address this critical security challenge, we introduce CODEBREAKER, a pioneering LLM-assisted backdoor attack framework on code completion models. Unlike recent attacks that embed malicious payloads in detectable or irrelevant sections of the code (e.g., comments), CODEBREAKER leverages LLMs (e.g., GPT-4) for sophisticated payload transformation (without affecting functionalities), ensuring that both the poisoned data for fine-tuning and generated code can evade strong …

Nonfactoid Question Answering As Query-Focused Summarization With Graph-Enhanced Multihop Inference, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Weiwen Xu, Ying Shen, Wai Lam
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Nonfactoid question answering (QA) is one of the most extensive yet challenging applications and research areas in natural language processing (NLP). Existing methods fall short of handling the long-distance and complex semantic relations between the question and the document sentences. In this work, we propose a novel query-focused summarization method, namely a graph-enhanced multihop query-focused summarizer (GMQS), to tackle the nonfactoid QA problem. Specifically, we leverage graph-enhanced reasoning techniques to elaborate the multihop inference process in nonfactoid QA. Three types of graphs with different semantic relations, namely semantic relevance, topical coherence, and coreference linking, are constructed for explicitly capturing the …

Equipping a conversational search engine with strategies regarding when to ask clarification questions is becoming increasingly important across various domains. Attributing to the context understanding capability of LLMs and their access to domain-specific sources of knowledge, LLM-based clarification strategies feature rapid transfer to various domains in a posthoc manner. However, they still struggle to deliver promising performance on unseen domains, struggling to achieve effective domain transferability. We take the first step to investigate this issue and existing methods tend to produce one-size-fits-all strategies across diverse domains, limiting their search effectiveness. In response, we introduce a novel method, called STYLE, to …

Web agents powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable abilities in planning and executing multi-step interactions within complex web-based environments, fulfilling a wide range of web navigation tasks. Despite these advancements, the potential for LLM-powered agents to effectively engage with sequential user instructions in real-world scenarios has not been fully explored. In this work, we introduce a new task of Conversational Web Navigation, which necessitates sophisticated interactions that span multiple turns with both the users and the environment, supported by a specially developed dataset named Multi-Turn Mind2Web (MT-Mind2Web). To tackle the limited context length of LLMs and the …

Text watermarking has emerged as a pivotal technique for identifying machine-generated text. However, existing methods often rely on arbitrary vocabulary partitioning during decoding to embed watermarks, which compromises the availability of suitable tokens and significantly degrades the quality of responses. This study assesses the impact of watermarking on different capabilities of large language models (LLMs) from a cognitive science lens. Our finding highlights a significant disparity; knowledge recall and logical reasoning are more adversely affected than language generation. These results suggest a more profound effect of watermarking on LLMs than previously understood. To address these challenges, we introduce Watermarking with …

Prompt Tuning On Graph-Augmented Low-Resource Text Classification, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Text classification is a fundamental problem in information retrieval with many real-world applications, such as predicting the topics of online articles and the categories of e-commerce product descriptions. However, low-resource text classification, with no or few labeled samples, presents a serious concern for supervised learning. Meanwhile, many text data are inherently grounded on a network structure, such as a hyperlink/citation network for online articles, and a user-item purchase network for e-commerce products. These graph structures capture rich semantic relationships, which can potentially augment low-resource text classification. In this paper, we propose a novel model called Graph-Grounded Pre-training and Prompting (G2P2) …

High-frequency trading (HFT) that executes algorithmic trading in short time scales, has recently occupied the majority of cryptocurrency market. Besides traditional quantitative trading methods, reinforcement learning (RL) has become another appealing approach for HFT due to its terrific ability of handling high-dimensional financial data and solving sophisticated sequential decision-making problems, e.g., hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) has shown its promising performance on second-level HFT by training a router to select only one sub-agent from the agent pool to execute the current transaction. However, existing RL methods for HFT still have some defects: 1) standard RL-based trading agents suffer from the overfitting …
