The Racial Triangulation Of Asian American Achievement, Vinay Harpalani
The Racial Triangulation Of Asian American Achievement, Vinay Harpalani
UC Law Journal
This Essay employs Professor Claire Jean Kim’s racial triangulation framework to examine how Asian Americans are racialized via academic achievement. It argues that there are two components to the racial triangulation of Asian American achievement. On one hand, Asian Americans are valorized as a “model minority”. We are praised for our achievement and cast as a model for other groups of people of color to follow. This ignores both the different histories of oppression that various groups of color have faced and the vast diversity of experiences among Asian Americans. But on the other hand, Asian Americans are also viewed …

Background: Recruiting participants for clinical trials poses challenges. Major barriers to participation include psychological factors (eg, fear and mistrust) and logistical constraints (eg, transportation, cost, and scheduling). The strategic design of clinical trial messaging can help overcome these barriers. While strategic communication can be done through various channels (eg, recruitment advertisements), health care providers on the internet have been found to be key sources for communicating clinical trial information to US adults in the social media era.
Objective: This study aims to examine how communication source (ie, medical doctors and peers) and message framing of TikTok videos (ie, psychological and …
Optimizing Laser-Based Wireless Power Transfer: A Comprehensive Study Of A 4 Quadrant Pv Module System And Its Powering And Tracking Capabilities, Ahmed Elfarran

This research investigates laser-based tracking systems for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. Beginning with an overview of renewable energy and WPT technologies, the study establishes both theoretical frameworks and practical methodologies for laser-based power transmission. The experimental analyses encompass load testing with a four-quadrant module, examining the impact of laser power, load conditions, and beam diameter on power transfer efficiency, as well as the influence of target movement speed on voltage stability. Notably, we achieved a tracking speed of up to 20 mm/s, ensuring efficient power delivery even with target motion. The results demonstrate clear correlations between laser power levels …
Impact Of Substance Use And Perceptions Of Social Support On Psychological Distress Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Laura Gorman
Impact Of Substance Use And Perceptions Of Social Support On Psychological Distress Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Laura Gorman
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are the leading cause of disability and mortality for individuals under the age of 45 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021; Moore et al., 2014). Previous research has informed us that substance use, perceptions of social support, and TBI severity have all been associated with increased levels of psychological distress. Given the prevalence of TBI and its impact on physical and mental health outcomes, it is important to understand how outside factors (substance use and perceptions of social support) relate with TBI severity to effect overall levels of psychological distress. Objective: Drawing from self-determination …

Activities Eligibility: Building A More Equitable Approach To Support Students, Cory Holten
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the researcher analyzed the impact of traditional cocurricular activityeligibility practices on minoritized students, students with disabilities, and students receiving free and reduced lunches. The researcher issued a survey to staff members at Horizon Middle School in Moorhead, Minnesota to gain an understanding of the perceived impact of participation in cocurricular activities and the impact and observed disparities existing as a result of traditional eligibility practices. As a result of the findings, the researcher proposes an alternative approach focused on identifying lagging skills through the collection of student data related to academic achievement, attendance, and behavior. Instead of …
Maturational Changes In The Epigenome And Transcriptome Of Hypothalamic Astrocytes: Implications For Axonal Regeneration, Abiodun Ebenezer Odufuwa
Maturational Changes In The Epigenome And Transcriptome Of Hypothalamic Astrocytes: Implications For Axonal Regeneration, Abiodun Ebenezer Odufuwa
Theses and Dissertations
Axon regeneration is essential for effective repair following injury in the CNS. One of the burdens of aging is the lack of recovery following injury in the CNS. Our previous studies show that in 35-day-old rats, axon regeneration occurs in response to a unilateral hypothalamic lesion in the hypothalamus neurohypophyseal system. However, this regenerative ability is lost in 125-day-old rats. Furthermore, treatment of hypothalamic organotypic culture with ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) promotes axonal outgrowth and survival. Our previous studies suggest that astrocytes may be playing critical roles in this maturational loss of regenerative capacity because only astrocytes expressed all the …
Administering Psychological Tele-Assessment: A Delphi Study, Amanda Willyard Walkowiak
Administering Psychological Tele-Assessment: A Delphi Study, Amanda Willyard Walkowiak
Theses and Dissertations
The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak increased demand for telehealth services for mental health providers (Zhou et al., 2020). To our knowledge, conducting psychological assessments through tele-health platforms has limited empirical and ethical support (Wright et al., 2020; Stifel et al., 2020; American Psychological Association [APA], 2020a). Moving from traditional to remote testing administration requires preparation, training, and practice (Joint Task Force for the Development of Telepsychology Guidelines for Psychologists [Telepsychology Task Force], 2013; Wright et al., 2020). Even if psychologists have access to test materials and the necessary technology to conduct tele-assessments, they may not have the training and clinical …
Engineered Nucleic-Acid Binding Intrinsically Disordered Proteins For Biomedical Applications, Telmo Diez Perez
Engineered Nucleic-Acid Binding Intrinsically Disordered Proteins For Biomedical Applications, Telmo Diez Perez
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
This dissertation explores the use of intrinsically disorder proteins (IDPs) in biomedical applications related to the detection and biosensing of nucleic-acid species. We engineer several low critical solution temperature (LCST) nucleic-acid binding elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) as model IDPs and study their potential in biomedical application via interactions with short single-stranded (ss) DNA, tRNA and viral RNAs. First, we engineer a simple polycationic ELP capable of recruiting DNA on demand in a DNA-protein-rich condensate via LLPS. Moreover, we develop a modified Flory-Huggins theory to quantify the partitioning of DNA and protein upon coacervate formation with and without salts. We then design …

Preschool Executive Control And Adolescent Dietary Outcomes: Highlighting The Role Of Context, Marla Lopez
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Research has identified executive control (EC) as an important predictor of dietary outcomes among youth. Executive control in preschool age has been shown to predict important outcomes across development for youth, indicating that good, foundational EC abilities are associated with successful development in later life. Dietary outcomes across adolescence, an important transitional period for establishing healthy eating behaviors, are understudied. Therefore, the current study sought to link two critical developmental periods, examining how preschool EC is associated with dietary trajectories across adolescence. Further, the study aimed to identify how contextual factors, specifically indices of socio-economic status and the home and …
Optimizing Scalability For Formal Analysis With Evolutionary Algorithm, Jianghao Wang
Optimizing Scalability For Formal Analysis With Evolutionary Algorithm, Jianghao Wang
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Predominantly employed to tackle hardware validation challenges in the early years, formal methods have since expanded to software engineering, introducing a significant level of rigor and precision to software analysis. Its use of mathematical notations and logical reasoning allows for abstract modeling of programs, enabling researchers and engineers to perform a multitude of analysis tasks to verify system dependability and rigorously prove the correctness of system properties. Despite the availability of many automated analysis tools including those considered lightweight, the practical adoption of formal methods in software development has been limited due to scalability concerns, especially when applied to large …
The Value Of Knowledge And Its Problems, Kevin Patton
The Value Of Knowledge And Its Problems, Kevin Patton
Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation answers the three value problems in epistemology. These three problems require an answer as to how knowledge is more valuable 1) than mere true belief, 2) any of the proper subsets of knowledge, and 3) in kind than that which falls short of knowledge. The methodology used to provide an answer to these problems relies on the arguments put forth in a rarely discussed paper from Ward Jones. In short, the Jonesian approach can be summed up as the view that epistemic axiology and analysis ought to be kept separate. The Jonesian framework instead looks outside of the …

Say I hand you a shape, any shape. It could be a line, it could be a crinkled sheet, it could even be a the intersection of a cone with a 6-dimensional hypersurface embedded in a 7-dimensional space. Your job is to tell me about the pointy bits. This task is easier when you can draw the shape; you can you just point at them. When things get more complicated, we need a bigger hammer.
In a sense, that “bigger hammer” is what the ring of differential operators is to an algebraist. Then we will say some things and stuff …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Flow Patterns In The Post-Stenotic Region Of Model Arteries And Stenosis Severity., Michael Laroche
Analysis Of The Relationship Between Flow Patterns In The Post-Stenotic Region Of Model Arteries And Stenosis Severity., Michael Laroche
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, contour fields of mean age and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) in the post-stenotic region of model arteries were analyzed to explore their correlation with FFR. While both high and low FFR cases exhibited similarities with an inner low-age region and an outer high-age region, low FFR cases displayed asymmetry in their low-age regions due to eccentric stenosis. Moreover, gradients of age across the artery diameter were more pronounced for low FFR cases. Additionally, low FFR cases demonstrated significantly higher TKE in the post-stenotic blood jet stream compared to high FFR cases that are reflected in low-age boundary …
The Sharing Economy And Urban Crime, Bryan S. Weber
The Sharing Economy And Urban Crime, Bryan S. Weber
Publications and Research
This paper examines whether the intensity of Airbnb is associated with city-level crime rates. This research sheds light on matters adjacent to current activities in public policy as cities engage in city-level Airbnb regulation. At the same time, Airbnb continues to expand. In the aggregate, Airbnb usage is associated with no significant crime increase but rather significant decreases in crimes of private conflict that persist in direction, significance, and magnitude over time. I do uncover evidence that two types of rooms, private rooms (44%) and shared rooms (1.5%), appear to be positively associated with both property crimes and crimes against …

Characterizing Gsk3Β Interaction And Kinetics Via Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, W A Bhagya De Silva
Characterizing Gsk3Β Interaction And Kinetics Via Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, W A Bhagya De Silva
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) is a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase involved in several key signaling pathways, including glycogen metabolism, WNT/β-catenin, and Hedgehog signaling. Hyperactivity of GSK3β has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, type II diabetes, and some cancers. Therefore, GSK3β is of interest as a target for therapeutics. Lithium ion (Li+) is a classical inhibitor of GSK3β. Structurally similar beryllium ion (Be2+) is ~1000-fold more potent. Lithium and beryllium have demonstrated pathway-specific and cell type-specific inhibition of GSK3β, prompting an investigation into the inhibitory mechanisms and thermodynamic characteristics of the metal-enzyme interaction.Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) is a label-free …

The modular construction industry has grown substantially, yet understanding of the relationships between project categories, sizes, and productivity remains limited. This study investigates these relationships in both permanent and relocatable modular construction projects across different sectors, including multifamily housing, dormitories, healthcare, education, retail, office, and workforce housing. Data from 303 permanent and 188 relocatable projects in the Modular Building Institute database were analyzed using Kendall's tau-b correlation and linear regression analyses. Key findings reveal that permanent projects outnumber and are generally larger than relocatable ones, with education being the most common project type. Significant positive correlations between project size and …
Automated Measurement Of The Water Drop Penetration Time For The Analysis Of Soil Water Repellency, Danxu Wang
Automated Measurement Of The Water Drop Penetration Time For The Analysis Of Soil Water Repellency, Danxu Wang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this work, we develop an innovative system for the automated measurement of Water Drop Penetration Time (WDPT) - a parameter that is conventionally used for evaluating soil water repellency (SWR). Increased SWR can be a reason for plant stress and poor crop yields, create a risk of potential water runoff and floods and thus can pose risks to life and property loss. Timely evaluation of soil conditions can save resources and win time for responding to environmental disasters. Manual measurements of WDPT are labor-intensive, subjective, tend to produce variability of outcomes, and also not always available in remote or …
Multi-Scale Ocean Modeling Using The Discontinuous Galerkin Method, Yao Gahounzo
Multi-Scale Ocean Modeling Using The Discontinuous Galerkin Method, Yao Gahounzo
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Ocean models often employ the hydrostatic assumption for large-scale applications when the horizontal scale is larger than the depth. Nonetheless, the non-hydrostatic effects are of great importance in submesoscale studies, such as modeling the physical processes of ice-ocean interactions. Most non-hydrostatic ocean models used in ice-ocean interaction studies are low-order finite-difference and finite-volume methods, often with significant dispersive errors. Therefore, there is a need for a high-order ocean model for ice-ocean interaction applications.
The first part of this thesis focuses on deriving the boundary conditions at the ice-ocean interface and incorporating them into the high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method-based ocean …
Hindcasting Water Availability In Semi-Arid Systems, Nicholas E. Kolarik
Hindcasting Water Availability In Semi-Arid Systems, Nicholas E. Kolarik
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Dryland systems cover one third of the earth’s land surface and are becoming increasingly drier, but existing datasets do not capture all of the types of available water that sustain these systems. In semi-arid environments, small surface water bodies and areas of mesic vegetation (wetlands, wet meadows, riparian zones) function as critical water resources. However, the most commonly-used maps of water availability are derived from the Landsat time series or single date aerial photographs, and are either too coarse spatially or temporally to effectively monitor dynamics of available water. In Chapter 1, I produced a Sentinel Fusion (SF) water resources …

Development And Implementation Of A Gps-Agnostic Drone Localization System, Alex Peterson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This research develops a GPS-denied state estimation system to localize and orient a drone for touch-based installations on power line towers and cables. As opposed to environments like underground tunnels or building interiors, our system effectively identifies and utilizes sparse landmarks such as towers, cables, and ground features. Our approach utilizes Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to create and reference three-dimensional maps in real time. Specifically, we employ Georgia Tech Smoothing and Mapping (GTSAM), proposed by Georgia Tech's BORG Lab, a factor graph-based data structure consisting of measurement factors and unknown pose variables that we are implementing for solving the …
Effects Of Antifreeze Proteins On Lipid Membrane Stabilization At Cold Temperatures, Emily Vernon
Effects Of Antifreeze Proteins On Lipid Membrane Stabilization At Cold Temperatures, Emily Vernon
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Cold-adapted organisms use antifreeze proteins (AFPs) and antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) to enable survival in freezing habitats. AF(G)Ps have been proposed to prevent leakage of intracellular metabolites by stabilizing cellular membranes, a property that could be of great physiological and biomedical relevance. The generality of this effect is not understood, and for the known examples of membrane leakage prevention by AF(G)Ps, the mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of different AFPs on the leakage of ions and dyes from model membrane systems. We find that leakage is best prevented by AFGPs, while insect AFPs showed …

The success of the treatment is evident in the significant reduction of biofilm thickness of 49 -185 µm, with the …
A Two-Part Validation Study Of The Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale, Henrietta Kadi Tettey-Tawiah
A Two-Part Validation Study Of The Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale, Henrietta Kadi Tettey-Tawiah
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A number of existing studies indicate that there is some correlation between pride and shame and various behavioral health outcomes like anxiety, depression, and self-harm in the general population. Research also confirms that this relationship is true among sexual minorities as well. This study sets itself up to interrogate this assertion vis-à-vis sexual minority adolescents (SMAs). Consequently, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and differential item functioning (DIF) detection analysis were performed on the 35-item Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale (SMIES) for SMAs. A tree-based modeling technique, specifically conditional inference trees (CIT), was then employed to explore and make predictions about the …
Corporate Crisis Management: A Contemporary Best Practices Template, Vivek Narayan
Corporate Crisis Management: A Contemporary Best Practices Template, Vivek Narayan
Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper seeks to re-envision the crisis management framework used by organizations in their day-to-day activities. In the modern world, with exponential technological advancements, the social media age, and the 24/7 news cycle, crises have worsened in severity. Despite this, most literature on the subject is more than a decade old.
Incorporating past literature, this thesis demonstrates that society is in an “era of crises,” then defines and discusses the types and origins of these crises. It compares the topics of issues and crisis management before commentating on corporate and academic literature and ultimately previous 3-stage models for crisis management. …
