Utilization Of Blood Flow Restriction Therapy With A Former Triathlete After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report, Christopher Keating, Stephanie Muth, Pt, Phd, Cameron Hui, Lisa T. Hoglund Sep 2024

Utilization Of Blood Flow Restriction Therapy With A Former Triathlete After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report, Christopher Keating, Stephanie Muth, Pt, Phd, Cameron Hui, Lisa T. Hoglund

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that limits function and reduces quality of life. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical procedure that replaces the joint surfaces to address anatomical changes due to knee OA. While TKA improves symptoms and function, postoperative impairments are common, including reduced quadriceps strength. Blood flow restriction (BFR) may be a viable option for patients following TKA, as it can improve strength with a minimal amount of joint loading compared to traditional strength training. The purpose of this case report is to describe the impact of BFR use in an individual …

Evaluating The Elimination Of Peremptory Challenges In Arizona, Hailey Badger Gordon Sep 2024

Evaluating The Elimination Of Peremptory Challenges In Arizona, Hailey Badger Gordon

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The Supreme Court confronted racial discrimination in jury selection in Batson v. Kentucky by prohibiting the use of race as a factor in exercising peremptory challenges. But Batson challenges rarely succeed in overcoming a challenged peremptory strike and have long been criticized as insufficient to eliminate racial discrimination in jury selection. Justice Marshall correctly predicted in his concurring opinion in Batson that racial discrimination in jury selection would continue as long as peremptory challenges were permissible.

Recognizing Batson’s shortfalls, states have experimented with reforms ranging from lowering the required showing for a successful Batson challenge to enumerating presumptively impermissible …

Justifying Redistributive Regulations, Jack Lienke Sep 2024

Justifying Redistributive Regulations, Jack Lienke

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Conventional cost-benefit analysis asks whether a regulation’s total benefits exceed its total costs but not whether those benefits and costs are distributed fairly across society. The traditional justification for this indifference to equity is that distributional concerns are most efficiently addressed through the tax-and-transfer system. Agencies issuing regulations, the story goes, should focus on growing the pie (i.e., increasing aggregate welfare). If the regulation that yields the largest pie also yields inequitably apportioned slices, Congress can correct the problem with taxes and transfers.

But Congress often asks agencies to fill in the details of its transfer programs with regulations, such …

Three-Dimensionalization Mediates The Subjective Experience Of Fractal Interior Spaces, Joori Suh, William Stalker, Steen Pedersen, Assaf Harel Sep 2024

Three-Dimensionalization Mediates The Subjective Experience Of Fractal Interior Spaces, Joori Suh, William Stalker, Steen Pedersen, Assaf Harel

Psychology Faculty Publications

A fractal, a self-similar organic or geometric pattern that repeats at varying scales, is one of the most compelling characteristics found in nature. Previous studies on fractal patterns have demonstrated consistent trends in potential psychological benefits, such as stress reduction. However, we fall short of understanding one of the essential properties of fractals found in nature, i.e., the three-dimensionality of their appearance. In this study, we aimed at understanding the role of the three-dimensionalization of fractal patterns in spatial structures on human subjective perceptual experience. Two hundred seventy three-dimensional spatial prototype models were created for this study, spanning two dimensions: …

Impact Of Sleep Quality On Hemogram-Derived Inflammatory Indices In Medical Undergraduates: A Cross-Sectional Study, Yash Garg, T. Jaseem, Kavita Rasalkar Sep 2024

Impact Of Sleep Quality On Hemogram-Derived Inflammatory Indices In Medical Undergraduates: A Cross-Sectional Study, Yash Garg, T. Jaseem, Kavita Rasalkar

Open Access archive

The link between sleep-related disorders and inflammation is well-known, but the association between inflammatory indices and sleep deprivation is still unclear. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between irregular sleep patterns and systemic inflammation using Hemogram-Based Inflammatory Indices. We collected demographic information from 90 undergraduate medical students through a confidential questionnaire. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Blood samples were obtained for complete blood count analysis, with platelet (P), lymphocyte (L), and neutrophil (N) counts measured. These values were then used to calculate hemogram-based inflammatory indices, including the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII), …

Engineering-Enhanced Theatre: How Engineering Involvement Can Aid Regional Theatres, Albert M. Le Sep 2024

Engineering-Enhanced Theatre: How Engineering Involvement Can Aid Regional Theatres, Albert M. Le

Architectural Engineering

Engineering and theatre are disciplines not often associated with each other within regional and small theatre companies in the United States. The distinction between the two fields of study is not simply from the fundamental differences between how each field is taught and practiced, but also the difficulties encountered within a scope of theatre often constrained with limited budget and time for each production. However, when beginning to explore the intersection between engineering and theatre, it is found that the empirical nature of current theatrical practices can be countered, and scenic design and construction can be re-envisioned with engineering involvement …

Innovations To Increase Plywood Shear Wall Design Capacity And Resiliency, "Mega Walls", Through Ductile Metal Strapping, Trevor Douglas Reichenberg, Tara Suzanne Reich, Katelyn Marie Lowry

Architectural Engineering

The researchers of this project are three undergraduate Architectural Engineering students at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Plywood shear walls are common structural elements in timber structures that resist lateral forces. Since their introduction to the industry in the 1950s, their shear capacities have remained essentially unchanged amongst the innovations of other wooden lateral systems. Prior to this project, Cal Poly undergraduate researchers have taken on the challenge of modernizing the shear wall. The “MeGa Wall” project was born: a system that implements metal gauge strapping which enhances a conventional wall by reducing nail connection failures. Full-scale experimental …

Our goal with this project is to test and develop a structural health monitoring (SHM) device capable of assessing the safety and integrity of building connections and overall structural health. At Cal Poly, a large portion of our structural engineering curriculum focuses on the design of buildings in response to earthquakes and the damage that can be mitigated through proper design. The increasing accessibility of technology in our world allows for the growth and development of systems that can enhance building safety and help us better understand how building practices can evolve to continue prioritizing life safety. Structural health monitoring …

Constructing A Liberal/Progressive “Constitution In Exile”: An Appreciation Of Jack Balkin’S Memory And Authority, James E. Fleming Sep 2024

Constructing A Liberal/Progressive “Constitution In Exile”: An Appreciation Of Jack Balkin’S Memory And Authority, James E. Fleming

Faculty Scholarship

Balkin’s book makes clear why many liberal/progressive criticisms of conservative originalists—that they get the history wrong or cherry-pick it, that they only selectively insist upon originalism and otherwise ignore it, and the like—deliver at best glancing blows (as far as the conservative originalists are concerned). For one thing, he shows that the construction of memory entails the construction of forgetting (or erasure),7 which is essential to originalist projects that whitewash our historical injustices and repudiate the progressive aspirations embodied in our history. Hence, when conservative originalists erase unjust aspects of our history, and liberals and progressives criticize them for not …

Hereditary Spherocytosis Due To A Novel Variant, P.Q1034x, In The Beta Subunit Of The Spectrin Gene: A Case Report, Emmalee M. Kugler, Akash Patel, Faraz Afridi, Maria I. Scarano, Rafat Ahmed

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Background: Heterozygous pathogenic variants of SPTB cause hereditary spherocytosis (HS) in a quarter of cases. Case report: A 14-day-old male presenting with persistent anemia and hyperbilirubinemia was diagnosed with HS by increased red blood cell osmotic fragility and decreased fluorescence on the eosin-5′-maleimide binding test. For his failure to thrive and hypotonia, genetic sequencing revealed a de novo variant of the SPTB gene (p.Q1034X) on exon 15. This variant is predicted to cause loss of normal protein function either through protein truncation or nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. A variant of uncertain significance (p.R438W) in the chondroitin sulfate synthase 1 (CHSY1) gene …

Emergency Department Slit Lamp Interdisciplinary Training Via Longitudinal Assessment In Medical Practice, Samara Hamou, Shayan Ghiaee, Christine Chung, Maureen Lloyd, Kelly Khem, Xiao Zhang

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Eye emergencies make up nearly 3% of US emergency department (ED) visits. While emergency physicians (EP) should diagnose and treat these ophthalmologic emergencies, many trainees report limited ocular exposure and insufficient training throughout their residency to confidently conduct a thorough slit-lamp exam.

METHODS: We created an interdisciplinary, simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) curriculum to teach emergency attending physicians how to operate the slit lamp with multimodal learning methodology at a tertiary academic center. The EPs first demonstrate their initial slit-lamp competency with a 20-item checklist, and they then review the necessary curricular content to pass their independent readiness test before …

Physics: Faculty Publications

We report on the absolute energy of the 2⁢⁢3⁢⁢1⁢0 state in neutral 9Be. In doing so, we measure the transition frequencies of the 2⁢2⁢1⁢0→ 2⁢⁢2⁢⁢1⁢∘1 and 2⁢⁢2⁢⁢1⁢∘1→ 2⁢⁢3⁢⁢1⁢0 transitions, also determining the absolute energy of the 2⁢⁢2⁢⁢1⁢∘1 state. The results are obtained from a home-built hollow cathode discharge lamp using saturated absorption spectroscopy with laser frequencies referenced to a frequency comb. The transition frequencies are determined to be 1276080080⁢(50) and 363105650⁢(130) MHz for the 2⁢2⁢1⁢0→ 2⁢⁢2⁢⁢1⁢∘1 and 2⁢⁢2⁢⁢1⁢∘1→ 2⁢⁢3⁢⁢1⁢0 transitions, respectively. The absolute energies are determined to be 42565.4498⁢(17) and 54677.350⁢(5) cm−1 for the 2⁢⁢2⁢⁢1⁢∘1 and 2⁢⁢3⁢⁢1⁢0 states, respectively. The …

Settlement As Construct: Defining And Counting Party Resolution In Federal District Court, Charlotte S. Alexander, Nathan Dahlberg, Anne M. Tucker

Northwestern University Law Review

Most civil cases settle. Yet generating a definitive settlement rate presents complex definitional and empirical problems, both in what should count as a settlement and how to count it. This Essay makes three contributions to better understanding and defining settlement. First, we propose a flexible, empirically informed, operationalizable definition of settlement as party resolution. Second, we exploit a new federal litigation data source to count party resolutions using machine learning models trained on 11 million docket sheet entries. Third, we offer new findings on party resolution frequency and distribution in the federal courts. Settlement is more widely and differently deployed …

Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Caitlin Glass, Kat M. Albrecht, Perry Moriearty Sep 2024

Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Caitlin Glass, Kat M. Albrecht, Perry Moriearty

Northwestern University Law Review

The U.S. criminal legal system is notoriously racialized. Though Black and Latinx people make up less than 30% of U.S. residents, they constitute more than 50% of the nearly two million people currently in U.S. prisons and jails. For decades, research has indicated that one group of decision-makers has had an outsized influence on these numbers: prosecutors. From whom to charge to what sentences to recommend, no actor plays a greater role in determining who goes to prison in this country. Highly subjective and lacking in formal guidance and accountability, prosecutorial decisions are especially vulnerable to racial bias. They are …

Enhancing Ammonium And Bicarbonate Tolerance In Chlorella Sorokiniana Through Ems-Induced Mutagenesis, Wentao Yang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the enhancement of ammonium and bicarbonate tolerance in Chlorella sorokiniana via EMS-induced mutagenesis, aimed at improving the microalgae's resilience and growth under high-stress conditions of elevated NH4+ and HCO3 concentrations. By mutating C. sorokiniana using EMS, we developed mutant strains capable of thriving in conditions that are inhibitory to the wild type strain. The successful adaptation of these strains demonstrates a significant increase in biomass production and tolerance to environmental stressors, highlighting the potential of EMS mutagenesis in industrial algal applications for sustainable biofuel production and environmental remediation.

Regiongrow3d: A Deterministic Analysis For Characterizing Discrete Three-Dimensional Landslide Source Areas On A Regional Scale, Nicolas W. Mathews, Ben A. Leshchinsky, Benjamin B. Mirus, Michael J. Olsen, Adam M. Booth

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Regional-scale characterization of shallow landslide hazards is important for reducing their destructive impact on society. These hazards are commonly characterized by (a) their location and likelihood using susceptibility maps, (b) landslide size and frequency using geomorphic scaling laws, and (c) the magnitude of disturbance required to cause landslides using initiation thresholds. Typically, this is accomplished through the use of inventories documenting the locations and triggering conditions of previous landslides. In the absence of comprehensive landslide inventories, physics-based slope stability models can be used to estimate landslide initiation potential and provide plausible distributions of landslide characteristics for a range of environmental …

Sound And Complete Witnesses For Template-Based Verification Of Ltl Properties On Polynomial Programs, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Amir Goharshady, Ehsan Goharshady, Mehrdad Karrabi, Dorde Zikelic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the classical problem of verifying programs with respect to formal specifications given in the linear temporal logic (LTL). We first present novel sound and complete witnesses for LTL verification over imperative programs. Our witnesses are applicable to both verification (proving) and refutation (finding bugs) settings. We then consider LTL formulas in which atomic propositions can be polynomial constraints and turn our focus to polynomial arithmetic programs, i.e. programs in which every assignment and guard consists only of polynomial expressions. For this setting, we provide an efficient algorithm to automatically synthesize such LTL witnesses. Our synthesis procedure is both …

Ft2ra: A Fine-Tuning-Inspired Approach To Retrieval-Augmented Code Completion, Qi Guo, Shangqing Liu, Xiaofei Xie, Ze Tang Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The rise of code pre-trained models has significantly enhanced various coding tasks, such as code completion, and tools like GitHub Copilot. However, the substantial size of these models, especially large models, poses a significant challenge when it comes to fine-tuning them for specific downstream tasks. As an alternative approach, retrieval-based methods have emerged as a promising solution, augmenting model predictions without the need for fine-tuning. Despite their potential, a significant challenge is that the designs of these methods often rely on heuristics, leaving critical questions about what information should be stored or retrieved and how to interpolate such information for …

Face It Yourselves: An Llm-Based Two-Stage Strategy To Localize Configuration Errors Via Logs, Shiwen Shi, Yintong Huo, Yuxin Su, Yichen Li, Dan Li, Zibin Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Configurable software systems are prone to configuration errors, resulting in significant losses to companies. However, diagnosing these errors is challenging due to the vast and complex configuration space. These errors pose significant challenges for both experienced maintainers and new end-users, particularly those without access to the source code of the software systems. Given that logs are easily accessible to most end-users, we conduct a preliminary study to outline the challenges and opportunities of utilizing logs in localizing configuration errors. Based on the insights gained from the preliminary study, we propose an LLM-based two-stage strategy for end-users to localize the root-cause …

An Empirical Study Of Static Analysis Tools For Secure Code Review, Wachiraphan Charoenwet, Patanamon Thongtanunam, Van-Thuan Pham, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Early identification of security issues in software development is vital to minimize their unanticipated impacts. Code review is a widely used manual analysis method that aims to uncover security issues along with other coding issues in software projects. While some studies suggest that automated static application security testing tools (SASTs) could enhance security issue identification, there is limited understanding of SAST’s practical effectiveness in supporting secure code review. Moreover, most SAST studies rely on synthetic or fully vulnerable versions of the subject program, which may not accurately represent real-world code changes in the code review process. To address this gap, …

Evaluating Szz Implementations : An Empirical Study On The Linux Kernel, Yunbo Lyu, Hong Jin Kang, Ratnadira Widyasari, Julia Lawall, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The SZZ algorithm is used to connect bug-fixing commits to the earlier commits that introduced bugs. This algorithm has many applications and many variants have been devised. However, there are some types of commits that cannot be traced by the SZZ algorithm, referred to as “ghost commits”. The evaluation of how these ghost commits impact the SZZ implementations remains limited. Moreover, these implementations have been evaluated on datasets created by software engineering researchers from information in bug trackers and version controlled histories. Since Oct 2013, the Linux kernel developers have started labelling bug-fixing patches with the commit identifiers of the …

Fdi : Attack Neural Code Generation Systems Through User Feedback Channel, Zhensu Sun, Xiaoning Du, Xiapu Luo, Fu Song, David Lo, Li Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Neural code generation systems have recently attracted increasing attention to improve developer productivity and speed up software development. Typically, these systems maintain a pre-trained neural model and make it available to general users as a service (e.g., through remote APIs) and incorporate a feedback mechanism to extensively collect and utilize the users' reaction to the generated code, i.e., user feedback. However, the security implications of such feedback have not yet been explored. With a systematic study of current feedback mechanisms, we find that feedback makes these systems vulnerable to feedback data injection (FDI) attacks. We discuss the methodology of FDI …

Monocular Bev Perception Of Road Scenes Via Front-To-Top View Projection, Wenxi Liu, Qi Li, Weixiang Yang, Jiaxin Cai, Yuanhong Yu, Yuexin Ma, Shengfeng He, Jia Pan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

HD map reconstruction is crucial for autonomous driving. LiDAR-based methods are limited due to expensive sensors and time-consuming computation. Camera-based methods usually need to perform road segmentation and view transformation separately, which often causes distortion and missing content. To push the limits of the technology, we present a novel framework that reconstructs a local map formed by road layout and vehicle occupancy in the bird's-eye view given a front-view monocular image only. We propose a front-to-top view projection (FTVP) module, which takes the constraint of cycle consistency between views into account and makes full use of their correlation to strengthen …
