Listener Factors In Integrating Syntax And Plausibility In Sentences Produced With Versus Without Stuttering, Gabriella L. Burgess Hayes
Listener Factors In Integrating Syntax And Plausibility In Sentences Produced With Versus Without Stuttering, Gabriella L. Burgess Hayes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Development of communication-focused therapy for people who stutter requires better understanding of how stuttering impacts oral comprehension. One aim was to investigate how stuttering impacts listeners’ ability to integrate syntax and world knowledge (plausibility) in sentence processing. A second aim was to investigate how listener factors predict ability to integrate information in sentences with stuttering.
Methods: 224 adults heard 24 experimental sentences interspersed with 24 fillers. Experimental sentences included six plausible double-object dative (DO) constructions, six plausible prepositional dative (PD) constructions, six implausible DO constructions, and six implausible PD constructions. Implausible constructions served as analogues of communication breakdowns. Half …
Self-Healing Qos Queue Management, Anonymous
Self-Healing Qos Queue Management, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
A self-healing quality of service (QoS) queue management system and method are disclosed for a multi-service network node. Ingress traffic is classified by a class of service (COS) map and forwarded by a scheduler to a normal queue set of per-service egress queues. A queue monitor aggregates per-queue telemetry, including credit accumulation statistics, drops, and depth, and feeds the telemetry to a self mapping correction engine over a feedback path. The correction engine distinguishes a queue freeze from transient congestion by detecting that a queue has available credits yet is not draining, and in response rebinds the affected service to …
Robust Overnight Heart-Rate-Variability Estimation Independent Of Sleep/Wake Staging, For Movement-Disordered Sleep (Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder / Parkinson's), Gerard Ziemski
Defensive Publications Series
Consumer wearables compute overnight heart-rate variability (HRV) — a widely used "readiness" or recovery signal — by first staging sleep from body movement and then aggregating HRV over the epochs labeled as sleep. In people with movement-disordered sleep, paradigmatically REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), which is strongly associated with Parkinson's disease, this fails: dream-enactment movement during REM is misclassified as wakefulness, so valid cardiac data is discarded and the resulting figure is unreliable. This disclosure describes a method that computes the nightly HRV figure over the full in-bed window — without conditioning on the device's sleep/wake or sleep-stage classification — …
Synchronized Multi-Line Digital Signal Generation Using Plural Independent Software-Triggered Serializer Peripherals With Open-Loop Fixed Start-Skew Compensation, Gerard Ziemski
Defensive Publications Series
A method is disclosed for generating two or more time-aligned digital output signals — for example a differential pair such as the USB D- / D+ data lines, or more generally any paired, differential, multi-phase, polyphase, quadrature, or multi-channel synchronized output — on a microcontroller or system-on-chip that provides plural independent hardware serializer peripherals (such as two or more SPI master transmit/MOSI engines) but provides no single peripheral and no dedicated hardware capable of driving the desired multi-line signal directly.
Each output line is assigned its own serializer and preloaded with a precomputed bitstream. The serializers are started by back-to-back …

Reframing Kabyle Resistance In Marc Garanger's Femmes Algériennes 1960, Lea Wong
Reframing Kabyle Resistance In Marc Garanger's Femmes Algériennes 1960, Lea Wong
Journal of Amazigh Studies
This article examines the identity photographs taken by Marc Garanger as a site of Kabyle women’s resistance in the Algerian War. Over the course of 1960, Garanger moved between various wartime displacement camps across Kabylia, photographing indigenous people for the production of identity cards––a crucial from of colonial population control. Since its publication, Garanger’s Femmes algériennes has become an ambiguous symbol of resistance in the Algerian War, largely due to the subjects’ perceived antagonistic posture and gaze. This article takes a forensic approach to analyzing Kabyle women’s wartime adornment, uncovering a new framework for conceptualizing Algerian women’s agency grounded in …
Representations Of Women Safeguarding Living Cultural Heritage For The Future In 21st Century Kabyle Cinema, Sheila Petty
Representations Of Women Safeguarding Living Cultural Heritage For The Future In 21st Century Kabyle Cinema, Sheila Petty
Journal of Amazigh Studies
This article examines cinematic representations of how some Kabyle women relate to and shape claims to Amazigh (Kabyle) land, language, tangible and intangible cultural heritage; how they navigate and safeguard cultural memory; and how this is depicted in three Kabyle films: La Langue de Zahra/ Zahra’s Mother Tongue (Fatima Sissani, France/Algeria, 2011); Nnuba (Sonia At Qasi-Kessi, Algeria, 2019; and Azar/Racine/Root (Malik Bourkache Daoud, Algeria, 2023). The article also probes how the filmmakers use tangible cultural heritage (documentary film) to document, transpose, and transmit intangible cultural heritage (memories, poetry, song, stories). Through an analysis of the narrative form and cinematic style …

Automatic Glossing In Under-Resourced Languages: Case Studies In Bribri And Cook Islands Māori, Carter D. Anderson
Automatic Glossing In Under-Resourced Languages: Case Studies In Bribri And Cook Islands Māori, Carter D. Anderson
Linguistics Undergraduate Senior Theses
Interlinear glossing is a major task in Indigenous language documentation. In this paper, I explore how effectively two Large Language Models, ByT5 and Gemini 2.5 Flash, can produce interlinear glossed text. I also examine how prompting an LLM with different types of information (dictionary entries, other training samples, and translations) can augment model performance. I apply these models to two under-resourced Indigenous languages: Bribri, which is morphologically complex from Costa Rica, and Cook Islands Māori, which has a simpler morphology and is from the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean. ByT5 exhibits much better performance when glossing Cook Islands Māori …
Computational Contrast Of Argument-Adjusting Operations In Cook Islands Māori: An Initial Exploration, Daisy Li
Linguistics Undergraduate Senior Theses
This paper presents the first corpus study of the semantic and syntactic features of active, actor emphatic, and passive constructions in Cook Islands Māori, a Polynesian language of the Cook Islands. Using computational techniques, including Universal Dependencies parsing, this project identifies and evaluates these constructions in corpus data. The actor emphatic construction is of particular interest because it is only found in Eastern Polynesian languages. However, it has historically been difficult to study due to its cross-linguistic variability and relative infrequency. This study compiles, to my knowledge, the largest corpus of Cook Islands Māori actor emphatic sentences to date, analyzing …
Assessing The Origin Of The Talus Deposit In King Ravine In The Presidential Range Of New Hampshire, Margaret M. Keating
Assessing The Origin Of The Talus Deposit In King Ravine In The Presidential Range Of New Hampshire, Margaret M. Keating
Earth Sciences Undergraduate Senior Theses
The timing and mechanisms driving the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 26-19 ka) in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, New Hampshire, remains inconsistently interpreted. King Ravine, located within the Presidential Range, contains a landform that preserves geomorphic evidence relevant to this debate. Here, I investigate the origin of this landform by assessing its age, surficial morphology, and internal structure. I present a topographic analysis of King Ravine, including a detailed new geomorphic map of the drainage basin and deposit. To constrain the timing of landform formation and activity, I determined …
Felony Murder: What Courts Ignore In Ohio Rev. Code § 2903.02(B), Richard S. Walinski
Felony Murder: What Courts Ignore In Ohio Rev. Code § 2903.02(B), Richard S. Walinski
Et Cetera
Ohio has two levels of felony murder. One is aggravated felony murder, 2903.01(b). It is an approximate equivalent of the common-law felony-murder rule. The other is a felony-murder rule for the lesser offence of simple murder, 2903.02(B). In felony-murder cases prosecuted under Ohio Revised Code § 2903.02(B), the nearly universal practice among the lower courts in Ohio is to ignore certain explicit text in the statute.
To warrant a conviction, 2903.02(B) requires that death have occurred as a proximate result of the defendant’s having committed or having attempted to commit one of many predicate offenses that the General Assembly labeled …
Correcting A Carry-On Conundrum: A Proposal To Expand The Dot’S Ability To Regulate Unfair And Deceptive Practices In The Airline Industry, Antonio Linek
Et Cetera
This Note examines the Department of Transportation’s attempt to regulate airline ancillary fees through 89 F.R. 34620. The Rule required airlines to disclose certain ancillary fees in an obvious manner, early on in the booking process. Airlines for America challenged the Rule in the Fifth Circuit in Airlines for Am. v. Dep’t of Transp. The court held that 49 U.S.C. § 41712 allows the DOT to prohibit unfair and deceptive practices, but not to impose prescriptive rules. This holding conflicts with older Seventh Circuit authority approving similar agency action, creating a circuit split. This Note argues that the Fifth …
Mental Health Transition Of Care Across State Lines: The Perspectives Of College Students, Caroline E. Hanson
Mental Health Transition Of Care Across State Lines: The Perspectives Of College Students, Caroline E. Hanson
Washington Semester Program
The mental health of first- year college students has a strong effect on their ability to transition smoothly and successfully to college (Young, C. C., & Calloway, S. J. (2015). For all students, the transition to college is stressful, filled with adjusting to new surroundings, schedules, and people. In addition to the social and environmental changes, college students are going through immense cognitive developments, specifically in their self-concept, self-esteem, and identity (Berk, 2023).
Composing Playgrounds, Rebecca Suju Abraham
Composing Playgrounds, Rebecca Suju Abraham
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This thesis explores music composition as the design of “playgrounds”: structured systems that invite participation, interaction, and the emergence of shared musical experience. Drawing on a background in engineering and a practice rooted in improvisation and community, I investigate how compositional authority can be exercised through the creation of constraints instead of fixed outcomes. These systems are structured enough to support coordination and open enough to allow for play and collective agency. The work is situated within practice-based research and engages qualitative methods to reflect on a series of projects developed over the course of my MFA in Sonic Practice. …
Exploring Paleoproterozoic Marine Redox States In A Young Banded Iron Formation From The Needle Mountains, Jaya Sharma
Exploring Paleoproterozoic Marine Redox States In A Young Banded Iron Formation From The Needle Mountains, Jaya Sharma
Earth Sciences Undergraduate Senior Theses
Banded iron formations (BIF) are redox-dependent chemical sedimentary rocks that have served as proxies for marine and atmospheric oxygen and iron conditions throughout Earth's history. While abundant in the Archean and early Proterozoic, the widespread deposition of BIFs declined following the Great Oxidation Event, as oxygenated surface waters prevented the accumulation of ferrous iron. However, the Needle Mountains, located in southwestern Colorado, house an anomalously young BIF deposited between 1786±10 Ma - 1801±6 Ma given existing geochronology. Here, we use rare earth element (REE) systematics, bulk chemistry, and petrographic analysis to determine the depositional conditions under which this BIF was …
A Mechanistic Investigation Of Theory Of Mind In Large Language Models, Idil K. Sahin
A Mechanistic Investigation Of Theory Of Mind In Large Language Models, Idil K. Sahin
Cognitive Science Senior Thesis Posters
Large language models successfully solve classic theory-of-mind tasks adapted from cognitive science, but the mechanisms underlying this ability remain unclear. Do they deploy circuitry specialized for reasoning about other minds, memorize common false- belief vignette structures and outputs, or rely on more domain-general computations? We investigate this question in Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct using causal mediation and representational similarity analyses across matched prompt sets that systematically vary an agent’s beliefs, the state of the physical world, and the correct answer. We identify a population of mid-layer attention heads that tracks divergence between an initial representation and the current state of the world. These …
Pitching Fwar Vs Bwar As Predictors Of Team Success In The Mlb Regular Season, Jason Lee
Pitching Fwar Vs Bwar As Predictors Of Team Success In The Mlb Regular Season, Jason Lee
University Honors Theses
Pitching Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is an area of sabermetrics capable of being used to predict regular season success in Major League Baseball. Fangraphs WAR (fWAR) and Baseball Reference WAR (bWAR) were used to construct regression models to predict regular season winning percentage, to build logistic models to establish a relationship between pitching WAR and the probability to win an individual regular season game, and to overlay density plots to consider WAR accumulation by pitching role and observe the difference of impact between starter and relief pitchers. This research finds that while pitching fWAR and pitching bWAR are both statistically …
Assessing Spatial Distribution Of Plausible Earthquake-Triggered Landslides Relative To Ca. 1000 Ybp Earthquake On The Gales Creek Fault, Jacqueline Rheingans
Assessing Spatial Distribution Of Plausible Earthquake-Triggered Landslides Relative To Ca. 1000 Ybp Earthquake On The Gales Creek Fault, Jacqueline Rheingans
University Honors Theses
Modern coseismic landslides cluster near the surface trace of the fault that ruptured, suggesting that clustering of paleolandslides may record information about paleoearthquakes. This study documents the pattern of prehistoric landslides near the Gales Creek Fault (GCF), northwest Oregon, to assess whether it reflects an independently known paleoearthquake. The GCF is located northwest of Portland through the Cascadia fore-arc basin where landslides are often triggered by intense rainfall during the wet season or potentially by seismic shaking on the megathrust or on crustal faults. In order to understand how a seismic event on the GCF will impact landslide distribution I …
The Unspoken And The Unseen: An Analysis Of Victim Gender And Linguistic Framing Of Sexual Assault In Judicial Discourse, Sarnika Ali
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
Sexual assault is a profound legal and social crisis. However, it is also fundamentally a linguistic one. The words used, or conspicuously not used, to describe victims, perpetrators, and their actions are not neutral arbiters of fact. They are powerful mechanisms that shape perceptions of harm, attributions of blame, and assignments of credibility. The central battleground for survivors is credibility, and while a “credibility discount” is often applied to female victims, the male victim is rendered nearly invisible. This research is therefore guided by one central, overarching question: how does a sexual assault victim’s gender influence the judicial language used, …
Custom Sbc Gps Tracking And Geocaching Carputer Software Development And Implementation, Joshua A. Davis
Custom Sbc Gps Tracking And Geocaching Carputer Software Development And Implementation, Joshua A. Davis
University Honors Theses
This thesis argues that hardware-integrated capstone projects develop software engineering skills that traditional coursework cannot replicate. A team of eight developers built a GPS tracking system on a Raspberry Pi 4 over two academic terms, integrating real-time position streaming, the APRS amateur radio protocol for network-independent location sharing, and PostGIS spatial queries for "new road" detection. The system implements SmartBeaconing for adaptive GPS data reduction, achieving approximately 80% storage savings while preserving route fidelity. The project exposed challenges absent from classroom assignments: hardware debugging without stack traces, cross-layer integration failures, and coordination overhead when deploying to unfamiliar architecture; demonstrating that …
The Thinnest Veil, Charles Butler
The Thinnest Veil, Charles Butler
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The Thinnest Veil is a work of fiction set in a historical colonial world that traces the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade. The main character, Anuli, is abducted from her home in Nigeria and is sold into deeper levels of the American slave system. I wanted to write from a woman’s perspective in this project and think about what power this character would have in this world. I also wanted to explore West African culture and origin, and the influence they have left in other places they have been. In August 2025, I traveled to Barbados to research the …

Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia Diagnosed After Parathyroidectomy, Syed Basit Haider, Andrew Cecil, Syed A. Gardezi
Aurora GME
Background: Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (FHH) is a rare, typically benign disorder caused by altered calcium-sensing receptor function, often misdiagnosed as primary hyperparathyroidism. Failure to identify FHH can lead to unnecessary parathyroid surgery as well as ineffective medical management.
Case Presentation: A 35-year-old man presented to our endocrinology service in 2021 for evaluation of persistent hypercalcemia. He had a history of partial parathyroidectomy performed in 2006 for presumed hyperparathyroidism, without normalization of serum calcium. Past medical history was notable for chronic pancreatitis and alcohol use disorder. He also reported a history of prior transverse fracture of the third distal phalanx in …
Beyond The Best Prompt: A Coverage View Of Multilingual Reasoning, Harshiv Mistry
Beyond The Best Prompt: A Coverage View Of Multilingual Reasoning, Harshiv Mistry
University Honors Theses
Multilingual LLMs reason more accurately in English than in other languages, and recent work links part of this gap to reasoning behavior: native-language traces contain fewer cognitive behaviors (verification, backtracking, subgoal setting, backward chaining) that support effective problem solving. We test whether prompting for these behaviors at inference time narrows the gap, across seven conditions varying chain-of-thought, instruction and reasoning language, and cognitive-behavior descriptions, on two models, three languages. We find that English-scaffolded reasoning is the strongest single strategy on both models, closing the Hindi gap on Qwen, though the explicit scaffold's value over plain chain-of-thought is model-dependent. Beyond aggregate …
Transforming Equity: A Systemic Analysis Of The Equity Model Of Social Justice Education Through The Lens Of Conflict Transformation Theory, Precious J. Golden
Transforming Equity: A Systemic Analysis Of The Equity Model Of Social Justice Education Through The Lens Of Conflict Transformation Theory, Precious J. Golden
University Honors Theses
Current pedagogical theory and practices grounded in social justice aim to rectify systemic barriers to equity, yet despite decades of teaching through a social justice lens, social inequality and cultural division are on the rise. "Justice," as a noun, has several meanings (Cambridge Dictionary). It can mean "judge", "law," or "fairness," and justice, no matter its meaning or its need, is achieved through methods of conflict resolution and conflict transformation. This inquiry seeks to present conflict transformation as a radical means of achieving transformative social justice, bringing voice to the voiceless and oppressed, and rectifying the contradictions in the current …
Jalzap: An Agile Hybrid For Ai-Accelerated Software Development, Pouya Nouri
Jalzap: An Agile Hybrid For Ai-Accelerated Software Development, Pouya Nouri
University Honors Theses
The rapid adoption of generative AI tools allows software teams to quickly code applications, but it comes at a cost: high scope volatility, technical debt, and unrealistic expectations, which break traditional Agile frameworks. This thesis introduces JALZAP, a lightweight, hybrid Agile framework designed to serve small, high-agility teams facing compressed timelines and unpredictable schedules. This framework was evaluated over 16 weeks through a Portland State University Capstone project working for a pre-seed startup sponsor, where a six-person team built Flowmind: an AI-powered iOS task management app meant to serve users with neurodevelopmental disorders like ADD/ADHD. JALZAP implements structural boundaries, including …

Mycelial Modeling: Teaching Biology Students Statistical Modeling With Mushrooms, Colette Wolf
University Honors Theses
This paper summarizes and describes the development of a set of learning materials that were created to educate students and professionals from other fields in statistical modeling techniques. These materials are primarily aimed at biology students, but are still intended to be useful for anyone who is interested in incorporating decision trees and random forest models into their personal research in the future. By directing the reader towards the JMP software, these materials navigate around the statistical knowledge base and coding implementation practices that otherwise would serve as a barrier to learning statistical modeling techniques, and instead focus on the …
From Principal To Behavioral Health Ceo: Lessons Schools Must Learn About Student Mental Health, Anthony S. Felder
From Principal To Behavioral Health Ceo: Lessons Schools Must Learn About Student Mental Health, Anthony S. Felder
Essays in Education
Schools across the United States are increasingly functioning as front-line mental health systems, often without adequate preparation, staffing, or clinical training. This essay draws on the author's lived experience as a former school principal, doctoral scholar in educational leadership, licensed clinical social worker, and current behavioral health chief executive officer to examine the intersection of K-12 education and youth mental health. Grounded in trauma-informed care, restorative practice, and family-centered systems of support, the essay presents five evidence-based lessons that school leaders must consider to meet students' evolving social-emotional needs. These lessons address the limitations of punitive discipline, the urgent need …
Note On The Financing Of Housing Credit, M.L. Ben Otmane
Note On The Financing Of Housing Credit, M.L. Ben Otmane
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
The causes of the housing crisis are numerous and interconnected: inadequate supply relative to demand, production system imbalances, growing urban populations, structural economic organization factors, and the shift from housing as use-value to housing as exhaustive commodity. Urban centers already concentrate nearly 45% of the population with a growth rate of 4.4%, while rural areas register only 0.1% (corrected from text: 4.1% likely a typo; logic suggests lower). Housing in Morocco is extremely expensive. Vertiginous increases in land costs for both individual and collective housing combine with unjustified rises in construction material prices. These increases are automatically passed on to …
