The Fight In And Out The Ring For Mexican American Women Boxers, Melody Alanis, George B. Cunningham, Natasha T. Brison Nov 2024

The Fight In And Out The Ring For Mexican American Women Boxers, Melody Alanis, George B. Cunningham, Natasha T. Brison

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

In the context of the United States (US) sport sector, particularly within the boxing domain, a prevalent hypermasculine culture has been widely observed. Despite this prevalence, there exists a significant gap in research: addressing the shared experiences of Latinas, specifically Mexican American women boxers in the US. To bridge this divide, the authors employ a qualitative study utilizing Latin Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) as the primary theoretical framework to further investigate the boxing experiences of Mexican American women inside and outside the ring. The study engaged ten participants in semi-structured interviews, while additionally collecting data from their respective boxing gyms' …

Storage Of Measurement Objects For Optical Measurement On Collaborative Robots, Konrad Hirschbeck Nov 2024

Storage Of Measurement Objects For Optical Measurement On Collaborative Robots, Konrad Hirschbeck

Defensive Publications Series

The core idea is to use so-called collaborative robots for robot-based and automated component pick-up, which can be moved directly by the operator by touching or touching and pulling, pushing and turning („manual guidance“) and the evaluation of the quality/suitability of the set robot positions can be carried out directly via the behavior of the measurement object in this very scene currently formed by the robots.

Enhancing 3d Knowledge-Based Authentication In Vr By Having Fun, William James Doyle V, Christopher Kreider Nov 2024

Enhancing 3d Knowledge-Based Authentication In Vr By Having Fun, William James Doyle V, Christopher Kreider

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

In the modern era of cyber attacks, and an ever-changing online world, safety and security must constantly evolve to fit the current standards. In virtual reality (VR) simple keyboard-typed passwords are a thing of the past. These passwords are complicated and frustrating to input. Along with the creation of VR, it also opened the door to a new era of password-based authentication. Using these systems' technology, password inputting can be a fun experience. These passwords are not only easier, and less frustrating to input, but as shown in previous studies, they can also be faster while still being secure. In …

Soc-Based Control System Performance Analysis For Trapped-Ion Quantum Computing, Tiamike Dudley Nov 2024

Soc-Based Control System Performance Analysis For Trapped-Ion Quantum Computing, Tiamike Dudley

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Scatter-gather dynamic-memory-access (SG-DMA) is utilized in applications that require high bandwidth and low latency data transfers between memory and peripherals, where data blocks, described using buffer descriptors (BDs), are distributed throughout the memory system. The data transfer organization and requirements of a Trapped-Ion Quantum Computer (TIQC) possess characteristics similar to those targeted by SG-DMA. In particular, the ion qubits in a TIQC are manipulated by applying control sequences consisting primarily of modulated laser pulses. These optical pulses are defined by parameters that are (re)configured by the electrical control system. Variations in the operating environment and equipment make it necessary to …

Improving The Performance Of The Modal Holographic Wavefront Sensor By Adapting To Prevailing Turbulence Conditions: Experimental Verification, Andreas Zepp, Emma Branigan, Kevin Murphy, Szymon Gladysz Nov 2024

Improving The Performance Of The Modal Holographic Wavefront Sensor By Adapting To Prevailing Turbulence Conditions: Experimental Verification, Andreas Zepp, Emma Branigan, Kevin Murphy, Szymon Gladysz

Conference Papers

The modal holographic wavefront sensor offers a promising alternative to established wavefront sensing techniques. Since the strengths of individual aberration modes are directly measured, there is no need for time-consuming signal processing and wavefront reconstruction. Bandwidths up to three orders of magnitude higher than those of commercial wavefront sensors can in principle be achieved. However, in practice the accuracy of measurements is compromised by intermodal crosstalk, which arises when the wavefront exhibits additional aberrations to those encoded in the modal wavefront sensor. This issue is particularly prominent when measuring wavefronts disturbed by atmospheric turbulence. To mitigate the effects of intermodal …

Porcine Peritoneal Macrophages Are Susceptible To Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infection, Kassandra Durazo-Martinez, Jayeshbhai Chaudhari, Sushmita Kumari, Hiep Vu Nov 2024

Porcine Peritoneal Macrophages Are Susceptible To Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infection, Kassandra Durazo-Martinez, Jayeshbhai Chaudhari, Sushmita Kumari, Hiep Vu

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have suggested that porcine peritoneal macrophages (PPMs) are resistant to PRRSV infection, whereas porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) are highly susceptible. This contrast is intriguing, as both cell types belong to the same monocyte/macrophage family. The current study aimed to investigate the host factors contributing to the differing susceptibility of PPMs and PAMs to PRRSV infection. We found that PPMs exhibit a higher frequency of CD14+ cells compared to PAMs, suggesting a more immature macrophage phenotype in PPMs. Importantly, PPMs expressed both CD163 and CD169, the key receptors for PRRSV entry, although the frequency and intensity of CD163 and …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This clinical practice guideline (CPG) initiative addressed the rising patient fall rates at an inpatient general care neurology unit (GCNU) in North Carolina. Falls are a leading cause of preventable injury, yet the facility lacked evidence-based (EB) fall prevention practices. This doctoral project developed a CPG for GCNU fall prevention, which was evaluated by an expert panel using the AGREE II instrument. A literature review identified 20 studies assessed via the Johns Hopkins model, which informed the CPG. Expert review scored the CPG at 100% in all domains, leading to its approval for clinical use. Key recommendations include CPG expansion, …

Attributing Ai Authorship: Towards A System Of Icons For Legal And Ethical Disclosure, Joseph J. Avery, Patricia Sánchez Abril, Alissa Del Riego Nov 2024

Attributing Ai Authorship: Towards A System Of Icons For Legal And Ethical Disclosure, Joseph J. Avery, Patricia Sánchez Abril, Alissa Del Riego

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Over the past year, the pervasive role of large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence (AI) in text generation has precipitated concerns about ethical usage, authorship, and transparent attribution. This has been true in legal practice, academia, and the corporate world, as well as in countless other arenas. In this Article, we identify the gap that has opened between those demanding proper disclosure (we should know when and to what extent AI is an author) and those struggling to respond to these demands. Part of the problem is that there is no system in place, no lingua franca, no set …

Natural Language Processing For Precise Identification Of Primary Tumor Histology And Radiation Necrosis In Stereotactic Radiosurgery Patients, Mario Fugal Nov 2024

Natural Language Processing For Precise Identification Of Primary Tumor Histology And Radiation Necrosis In Stereotactic Radiosurgery Patients, Mario Fugal

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The management of brain metastases and their associated complications, such as radiation necrosis, has long posed significant challenges in radiation oncology. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a key treatment modality for patients with brain metastases, yet the complexity of metastatic disease and limitations in diagnostic coding systems, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), often obstruct the accurate extraction of critical information from electronic health records (EHRs). This difficulty especially impacts the identification of primary tumor histology and the detection of post-treatment complications like radiation necrosis (RN), both of which are crucial for improving clinical outcomes and conducting robust observational …

Disentangling Genotype And Environment Specific Latent Features For Improved Trait Prediction Using A Compositional Autoencoder, Anirudha Powadi, Talukder Zaki Jubery, Michael C. Tross, James C. Schnable, Baskar Ganapathysubramanian Nov 2024

Disentangling Genotype And Environment Specific Latent Features For Improved Trait Prediction Using A Compositional Autoencoder, Anirudha Powadi, Talukder Zaki Jubery, Michael C. Tross, James C. Schnable, Baskar Ganapathysubramanian

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In plant breeding and genetics, predictive models traditionally rely on compact representations of high-dimensional data, often using methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and, more recently, Autoencoders (AE). However, these methods do not separate genotype-specific and environment-specific features, limiting their ability to accurately predict traits influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. We hypothesize that disentangling these representations into genotype-specific and environment-specific components can enhance predictive models. To test this, we developed a compositional autoencoder (CAE) that decomposes high-dimensional data into distinct genotype-specific and environment-specific latent features. Our CAE framework employed a hierarchical architecture within an autoencoder to effectively separate …

Implementing Bernstein Operational Matrices To Solve A Fractional‐Order Smoking Epidemic Model, Jalal Al Hallak, Mohammed Alshbool, Ishak Hashim Nov 2024

Implementing Bernstein Operational Matrices To Solve A Fractional‐Order Smoking Epidemic Model, Jalal Al Hallak, Mohammed Alshbool, Ishak Hashim

All Works

This paper leverages the Bernstein operational matrices method for the first time in order to resolve the nonlinear fractional smoking epidemic model presented in terms of Caputo’s fractional derivative. An approximate solution is derived using Bernstein’s operational matrices and strategically chosen collocation points. This is followed by the validation of the proposed method’s accuracy and reliability against the established Runge–Kutta fourth‐order method. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparative analysis is conducted against two prominent techniques: the fractional differential transform method (FDTM) and the q‐homotopy analysis transform method (q‐HATM). The results show a superior and significant performance regarding accuracy as well as approximation. …

When Is Teasing Abuse? A Grounded Theory Of Teasing Among Mexican American Adolescent Dating Couples, Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin, Kim Peace-Tuskey Nov 2024

When Is Teasing Abuse? A Grounded Theory Of Teasing Among Mexican American Adolescent Dating Couples, Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin, Kim Peace-Tuskey

Social Work Faculty Publications

This study examined the use of teasing during observed videotaped interactions of Mexican American adolescent dating couples (N = 34; 15–17 years old) from an urban area of the Southwest United States. During the interaction task, couples discussed two relationship problems for 14 min and nearly all interactions (88.2%) contained teasing. In turn, we developed a grounded theory of teasing that delineated who initiated the teasing (boys/girls), teasing types, levels of severity of teasing incidents, youth’s motivations for teasing, and the resulting consequences of teasing in real time. We found that most teasing incidents were mild to moderately severe …

Prior Probability Biases Perceptual Choices By Modulating The Accumulation Rate, Rather Than The Baseline, Of Decision Evidence, Jessica A. Diaz, M. Andrea Pisauro, Ioannis Delis, Marios G. Philiastides Nov 2024

Prior Probability Biases Perceptual Choices By Modulating The Accumulation Rate, Rather Than The Baseline, Of Decision Evidence, Jessica A. Diaz, M. Andrea Pisauro, Ioannis Delis, Marios G. Philiastides

School of Psychology

The prior probability of an upcoming stimulus has been shown to influence the formation of perceptual decisions. Computationally, these effects have typically been attributed to changes in the starting point (i.e., baseline) of evidence accumulation in sequential sampling models. More recently, it has also been proposed that prior probability might additionally lead to changes in the rate of evidence accumulation. Here, we introduce a neurally-informed behavioural modelling approach to understand whether prior probability influences the starting point, the rate of evidence accumulation or both. To this end, we employ a well-established visual object categorisation task for which two neural components …

Partisan Prejudice: The Role Of Beliefs About The Unchanging Nature Of Ideology And Partisans, Crystal L. Hoyt, Jeni L. Burnette, Meghan Moore Nov 2024

Partisan Prejudice: The Role Of Beliefs About The Unchanging Nature Of Ideology And Partisans, Crystal L. Hoyt, Jeni L. Burnette, Meghan Moore

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Although there is a tendency to think all forms of essentialism—the belief that characteristics are inherent and unchangeable—are similar, some theories suggest different foundations and outcomes. We investigated if belief systems about the stability of political ideology (trait essentialism) and the fundamental nature of partisans (social essentialism) predict prejudice in opposite ways and if they do so via differential relations with blame. Across six studies (N = 2,231), we found that the more people believe the trait of political ideology is fixed (trait essentialism), the more they think that Republicans and Democrats are inherently different (social essentialism). Crucially, despite …

This study applies a posthuman lens to the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Workforce Framework, examining two key Work Roles in cybersecurity education. Employing a novel posthuman coding scheme, the associated Tasks, Knowledge, and Skills (TKS) statements were analyzed. Findings reveal significant posthuman elements within the framework while identifying opportunities for further integration. The analysis demonstrates a strong presence of human-technology entanglement and adaptive learning concepts, yet highlights areas where the framework could emphasize system complexity and interconnectedness. This research contributes to ongoing discussions on cybersecurity education in complex technological landscapes, proposing a theoretical framework for integrating posthuman concepts …

Regulating Chatbot Output Via Inter-Informational Competition, Jiawei Zhang Nov 2024

Regulating Chatbot Output Via Inter-Informational Competition, Jiawei Zhang

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

The advent of ChatGPT has sparked over a year of regulatory frenzy. Policymakers across jurisdictions have embarked on an AI regulatory “arms race,” and worldwide researchers have begun devising a potpourri of regulatory schemes to handle the content risks posed by generative AI products as represented by ChatGPT. However, few existing studies have rigorously questioned the assumption that, if left unregulated, AI chatbot’s output would inflict tangible, severe real harm on human affairs. Most researchers have overlooked the critical possibility that the information market itself can effectively mitigate these risks and, as a result, they tend to use regulatory tools …

Between Copyright And Computer Science: The Law And Ethics Of Generative Ai, Devin R. Desai, Mark Riedl Nov 2024

Between Copyright And Computer Science: The Law And Ethics Of Generative Ai, Devin R. Desai, Mark Riedl

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Copyright and computer science continue to intersect and clash, but they can coexist. The advent of new technologies such as digitization of visual and aural creations, sharing technologies, search engines, social media offerings, and more, challenge copyright-based industries and reopen questions about the reach of copyright law. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence research, especially Large Language Models that leverage copyrighted material as part of training, are the latest examples of the ongoing tension between copyright and computer science. The exuberance, rush-to-market, and edge problem cases created by a few misguided companies now raises challenges to core legal doctrines and may shift …

Nonequilibrium Plasma Synthesis And Processing Of Iii-Nitride Materials, Dillon Patrick Moher Nov 2024

Nonequilibrium Plasma Synthesis And Processing Of Iii-Nitride Materials, Dillon Patrick Moher

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Nitrogen is abundant on Earth as its diatomic form, and human activity has generated a significant demand for nitrogen-containing compounds. However, its triple bond energy of 941 kJ/mol makes it a poor reactive species in the ground state. Nitrogen-containing nonequilibrium plasmas are made up of background gas, electrons, ions, and a multitude of excited states of nitrogen or even atomic nitrogen. Many of these species have rather high reactivity. As such, the plasma medium is of great potential for driving chemical reactions that involve nitrogen as a reactant, i.e., nitrogen fixation into compounds like ammonia, high-energy-density polynitrogen compounds, and metal-nitride …

Limitations Of Beam-Control Compensation, Matthew Kalensky, Darren Getts, Matthias T. Banet, Derek J. Burrell, Milo W. Hyde, Mark F. Spencer

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we use wave-optics simulations to explore the limitations of beam-control compensation. We evaluate performance in terms of the normalized power in a diffraction-limited bucket for the cases of no beam-control compensation, perfect phase compensation, and perfect full-field compensation. From these results, we are able to arrive at the following conclusions: (1) without any form of beam-control compensation, performance begins to degrade when D/r0 > 1; (2) with perfect phase compensation, performance begins to degrade when D/r0 > 1 and (λ/r0)/θ0 > 1; and (3) with perfect full-field compensation, performance begins to degrade when D/r0 …
