Adaptive Maximum Fingerprint Touch-Size Threshold For Reduced Unintended Authentication Attempts And Reduced Spoof Accept Rate, Justin Eltoft, Kris Chen, Leo Hsieh
Adaptive Maximum Fingerprint Touch-Size Threshold For Reduced Unintended Authentication Attempts And Reduced Spoof Accept Rate, Justin Eltoft, Kris Chen, Leo Hsieh
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes systems and techniques to adaptively adjust a maximum touch-size threshold to ignore inadvertent touches of the display and to accommodate different finger sizes while preventing the use of facsimiles or other objects that may be used in spoof attacks to fool an under-display fingerprint sensor (UDFPS). In aspects, if an object touched to the display exceeds a maximum touch-size threshold, the touch may be disregarded to prevent inadvertent touches of a hand from triggering a fingerprint rejection or to reduce a spoof accept rate (SAR) of attempts to improperly access a device. In other aspects, if an …

Taking Transcendental Idealism Seriously: Rethinking The Freedom And Determinism Debate, John Ian K. Boongaling
Taking Transcendental Idealism Seriously: Rethinking The Freedom And Determinism Debate, John Ian K. Boongaling
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The dilemma posed by the problem of freedom and determinism can be summarized this way: On the one hand, our recognition of the laws of nature entails that we view the world to be, in an important sense, deterministic. On the other hand, our recognition of moral responsibility entails that we view ourselves to be free. In this paper, I will show that the dilemma can be dissolved if we take Kant’s transcendental idealism seriously. In the process, I will explain what amounts to taking such doctrine seriously and present arguments as to how it can shed light on the …
How To Leave Modernity Behind: The Relationship Between Colonialism And Enlightenment, And The Possibility Of Altermodern Decoloniality, Britta Saal
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Starting from the fact that we all share modern history while at the same time having very different and sometimes contrasting experiences of what modernity is, I’d first like to look at the connection between colonialism and Enlightenment, because the modern norms and values developed then are still discussed very actively on the global scale. One of the major problems that constrain the transcendence of the colonial impact of these norms and values is the colonized mind. It is very clear that it is necessary to decolonize both the colonized and the colonizer’s minds. Here the project of conceptual decolonization, …
Agenda For A South-South Philosophical Dialogue, Enrique Dussel
Agenda For A South-South Philosophical Dialogue, Enrique Dussel
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The intercultural dialogue that has been developing since the beginning of the 21st century as a cultural and political priority should have an inter philosophical global dialogue as its epistemological and ontological foundation. However, given the asymmetric relation between the Global North and the Global South, it is necessary that this global dialogue begin with an inter philosophical dialogue among the world’s post-colonial communities. This essay argues that it is imperative for philosophers of the South to come together to define and claim for themselves a philosophical practice—generating its topics and methods from its own historical, socio-economic-political realities and traditions—that …
Transatlantic Sermonizing: The Influence Of Changing Sermon Styles In Britain On Anglican Clergy In Colonial Philadelphia, Barry Levis
Sermon Studies
At the beginning of the eighteenth century, a significant change emerged in the style and content of sermons in the Church of England. Sermons focused less on sin and the threat of eternal punishment, features of the seventeenth century, and more on how to live a rational and agreeable life. These alterations occurred both because of political changes following the Hanoverian succession accompanied by the rise of the Whigs and also from the influence of the Enlightenment. These transformations arose not only in England but in her American colonies as well, primarily in the Middle Atlantic colonies. Large numbers of …

Designing Customized Loss Functions For Training Deep Neural Networks, Ali Pourramezan Fard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the critical role of loss functions in enhancing the predictive performance of deep machine learning models. Loss functions are an integral element of all the ongoing advances we witness daily in this domain. I design custom loss functions and their impacts on various machine learning tasks, particularly in computer vision.
In the first stage of my research, I aim to improve the prediction performance of deep learning models by providing them with more precise feedback associated with task requirements. This led me to create the concept of assistive loss functions. My first proposed loss function, inspired by …

Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection
Kasie Emery (they/them) is a 31-year-old, asexual, non-binary individual who discovered their asexual identity during their college years and discovered their non-binary identity a few years later. Emery has experienced many instances of asexual erasure in queer communities and speaks on the differences in the perceptions of their gender identity vs their sexual identity both in and out of LGBTQ+ spaces. They emphasize that discovering aspects of identity and self-expression is non-linear and how experimentation has been important in the learning process for them.
Throughout the interview, Emery displays their passion for queer representation in the media, describing LGBTQ+ characters …

American Sign Language Educators’ Perceptions Of Incorporating Multicultural Content In U.S. Higher Education Classrooms, Noe Alexander Turcios
American Sign Language Educators’ Perceptions Of Incorporating Multicultural Content In U.S. Higher Education Classrooms, Noe Alexander Turcios
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
American Sign Language (ASL) courses in U.S. higher education often inadequately incorporate multicultural content, with many educators lacking knowledge of multiculturalism and relevant cultural resources. The purpose of this study was the exploration of ASL educators' perspectives on the incorporation of multicultural content in ASL classrooms and the identified barriers to doing so. The multilevel inclusion framework and the integrated framework for a culture of diversity offered a conceptual lens for the study. For this basic qualitative design, semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 ASL educators with at least 3 years of experience. In the reflexive thematic analysis of the …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Staff Education Regarding Menopause Hormonal Use In A Women's Clinic, Patricia Leal
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This DNP project entails staff education regarding menopause hormonal use in a women's clinic. The practice problem was the lack of staff confidence regarding hormone use in menopausal women. It is essential to address the practice problem within the context of nursing practice because it can potentially enhance positive social change by addressing the healthcare needs of an underserved demographic. The project aimed to develop and deliver an education program regarding the care of menopausal women for staff members in the women's clinic. The project question was whether staff education regarding menopause hormonal use could increase confidence among staff in …
Perceptions Of Effectiveness Of Eye Movement Desensitized And Reprocessing For Those Diagnosed With Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Megan C. Stefanelli
Perceptions Of Effectiveness Of Eye Movement Desensitized And Reprocessing For Those Diagnosed With Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Megan C. Stefanelli
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a short-term psychotherapy approach first introduced in 1987 by Francine Shapiro. Currently, EMDR is only a first-line treatment to relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, this treatment modality could be expanded to generalized anxiety disorder if additional research was available. Further, research has demonstrated the effectiveness of EMDR from a quantitative perspective; however, there has been scarce research supporting the use of EMDR as a first-line treatment approach from a qualitative perspective. This hermeneutic qualitative study aimed to explore the psychological and physiological effects of EMDR on the brain from a …
Context Familiarity Is A Third Kind Of Episodic Memory Distinct From Item Familiarity And Recollection, Richard J. Addante, Evan Clise, Randall Waechter, Jesse Bengson, Daniel L. Drane, Jahdiel Perez Caban
Context Familiarity Is A Third Kind Of Episodic Memory Distinct From Item Familiarity And Recollection, Richard J. Addante, Evan Clise, Randall Waechter, Jesse Bengson, Daniel L. Drane, Jahdiel Perez Caban
Psychology Faculty Publications
Episodic memory is accounted for with two processes: “familiarity” when generally recognizing an item and “recollection” when retrieving the full contextual details bound with the item. We tested a combination of item recognition confidence and source memory, focusing upon three conditions: “item-only hits with source unknown” (‘item familiarity’), “low-confidence hits with correct source memory” (‘context familiarity’), and “high-confidence hits with correct source memory” (‘recollection’). Behaviorally, context familiarity was slower than the others during item recognition, but faster during source memory. Electrophysiologically, a triple dissociation was evident in event-related potentials (ERPs), which was independently replicated. Context familiarity exhibited a negative effect …
Investigating The Role Of Tetherin Protein In Multivesicular Bodies Fusions In Lung Cancer Cells, Md. Rakib Miah
Investigating The Role Of Tetherin Protein In Multivesicular Bodies Fusions In Lung Cancer Cells, Md. Rakib Miah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cells rely on the secretion of exosomes to communicate with one another and this process is potentially mediated by a protein called tetherin, which anchors exosomes to the cell surface to limit their spread. Tetherin protein has attracted a lot of attention because of its capacity to hinder the propagation of viruses by attaching virions to the surface of host cells. Treatment with interferon-alpha (IFNα) increases the production of tetherin, although it is not known how this affects tetherin localization and exosome-mediated communication. This thesis looks at how the expression of tetherin, which IFNα boosts, affects the dynamics of intercellular …

Effective Strategies To Decrease Employee Turnover In The Aviation Industry, Jasmina Tabakovic
Effective Strategies To Decrease Employee Turnover In The Aviation Industry, Jasmina Tabakovic
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employee turnover in the airline industry has been a timely and pressing problem. Some airline managers had not developed effective strategies to reduce employee turnover and mitigate turnover-related costs and organizational instability. Grounded in Herzberg et al.’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic study was to explore effective strategies used by airline managers to reduce employee turnover and mitigate turnover-related costs and organizational instability. The participants were six airline managers in the United States who had developed effective strategies to minimize employee turnover and enhance organizational stability and profits. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and publicly available …
Secondary Teacher Perceptions And Practices Of Intercultural Communicative Competence Development In Online Intercultural Exchanges, Paige L. Roland
Secondary Teacher Perceptions And Practices Of Intercultural Communicative Competence Development In Online Intercultural Exchanges, Paige L. Roland
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Secondary level world language programs in the United States lack efficient infusion and assessment of intercultural communicative competence in the curricula. When a learner acquires a new language, they also shape their personal identity and expand their ability to successfully interact cross-culturally, thus the need for culture and language to be understood as interdependent components of the bigger whole is evident (Liontas & Siegel, 2019). While there are extensive research theories and studies regarding models of assessment for various competences underlying intercultural communicative competence (e.g., communicative competence, idiomatic competence, sociolinguistic competence) throughout the decades, little research is available which utilizes …

Methods: Gene-based PRSs were constructed in AD cases and controls within each gene of the glial cells, according to the GWAS summary statistics of European ancestry. In detail, gene-based PRSs were first calculated for each glial cell type-specific gene for AD cases and controls in the discovery dataset (ADc1234ADA) using PRSet software. A meta-analysis with a fixed model was performed when the signal in both datasets was in the same direction. Bonferroni corrections for multiple testing (at α = .05) were used to determine significance within each of the three glial groups. Forest plots were used to visualize the results …

Strangers To The Algorithm: The Effects Of Algorithmic Decision-Making In Removal Proceedings On Due Process Rights, Otoniel Ramos
Strangers To The Algorithm: The Effects Of Algorithmic Decision-Making In Removal Proceedings On Due Process Rights, Otoniel Ramos
Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations
This paper investigates the impact of algorithmic decision-making tools on due process rights, particularly within immigration removal proceedings. Deviating from prior studies, which primarily focused on various measures of fairness or the long-term racial stratification as a consequence of these tools, this research emphasizes the implications for due process—a fundamental legal principle enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. By examining ICE's use of these tools between July 2012 (when they were adopted) and October 2016, the study reveals the ways algorithmic input may inadvertently erode principles of procedural justice, especially adjudicatorial independence, in a setting where the rights of non-citizens are …

Successful memory decisions require distinguishing between true and false memories. VariouS strategies can be used to avoid false memories such as the Recall-To-Reject (R-R) strategy and the Distinctiveness Heuristic (DH). R-R involves rejecting false information by recalling correct information (I know this person is not Bob, because Bob has brown hair); while DH involves the rejection of false information due to failure to recollect expected information (I know I never met this person because I would remember if I had). The purpose of this study is to examine how these strategies affect recognition memory. In the present study participants were …
