Toward An Audit-Informed Training Effectiveness Index For Construction Safety: A Bayesian Hierarchical Model Using Objective Performance Proxies, Duc A. Nguyen, Hong-Ha Le
CIB Conferences
This paper proposes a Bayesian hierarchical model for a Training Effectiveness Index (TEI) inferred from four objective performance proxies: inspection non-conformities, permit-to-work violations, near-miss events, and corrective-action closure time. Applied to data from ten subcontractors over six quarters in Hanoi, Vietnam, seven MAP optimizations all converged to log-posterior = −594.94 and σα = 1.316 (95% CI: 1.193–1.439) confirms identifiable between-subcontractor heterogeneity. LOSO cross-validation (ELPD = −685.0) confirms hyperparameter transferability. Near-miss counts are near-redundant (r = 0.9996 with three-proxy model; max difference 2.8 points). Comparison with PCA and z-score baselines yields r = 0.913. Key limitations - cells-to-parameters ratio of 1.94 …
Identification Of Scaffold Defect Risk Factors And Risk-Tier Inspection Intervals For Vietnam Construction Sites, Hong Ha Le, Duc A. Nguyen
Identification Of Scaffold Defect Risk Factors And Risk-Tier Inspection Intervals For Vietnam Construction Sites, Hong Ha Le, Duc A. Nguyen
CIB Conferences
Scaffold failures are a persistent safety burden driven by assembly quality variability, environmental exposure, and frequent site modifications. This study develops and validates a risk-tier inspection scheduling framework that converts routine scaffold inspection logs into interval-level predictions of critical defects. Using 950 inspection intervals from three Vietnamese regions (Northern, Middle coastal, Southern), a complementary log-log model with Elastic Net regularization predicts whether a critical defect will be detected at the next inspection. Critical events occurred in 14.21% of intervals. The model achieves strong discrimination (ROC-AUC = 0.995, AP = 0.984, Brier = 0.018); at the operating threshold, Precision = 1.000 …

In Viet Nam, recyclable municipal solid waste is often inadequately sorted and disposed of. While computer vision offers automatic sorting solutions, few studies address real-world deployment constraints on resource-limited edge devices. This research develops and evaluates an optimized edge AI framework for real-time waste classification. To better reflect practical sorting conditions, a dataset of 21,329 images was constructed, combining 15,158 internet images with 6,171 highly contaminated waste images captured in Hanoi, Viet Nam. The validation and test sets capture image variations in object shape, size, occlusion, and illumination. To enable deployment on the NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano, the system uses …
A Multi-Fidelity Approach For Forecasting Seismic Responses In Building Structures, Quynh Doan Thi Mai, Viet Hung Dang, Trong Phu Nguyen
A Multi-Fidelity Approach For Forecasting Seismic Responses In Building Structures, Quynh Doan Thi Mai, Viet Hung Dang, Trong Phu Nguyen
CIB Conferences
In this study, a hybrid physics-based and data-driven model is proposed to reliably forecast the dynamic responses of structures under time-varying excitations. While detailed physics-based models are accurate, they are computationally intensive; conversely, purely data-driven models are efficient but highly dependent on data quality and volume. The proposed hybrid approach bridges this gap by combining a fast, low-fidelity physics-based model with a data-driven corrector to predict the residuals between the low-fidelity approximation and the high-fidelity target. Specifically, the low-fidelity physical model relies on a multi-degree-of-freedom mass-spring-damper system, while the data-driven corrector is based on a selective state-space neural network. The …

Urban rail construction is one of the most safety-critical engineering domains, where even minor errors can lead to catastrophic consequences. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer promising capabilities for automating safety risk extraction from accident reports; however, their deployment is critically hindered by hallucinations – outputs that are fluent yet factually incorrect or logically inconsistent. Existing prompting methods such as Chain-of-Thought rely on implicit reasoning without explicit problem representation, leading to brittleness, logical drift, and undetected constraint violations. This paper addresses key research gaps in current approaches, including the lack of constraint grounding in authoritative knowledge bases, the absence of explicit …

Evidence Of Perceived Impact Of Safety Training Programs On Worker Safety In The Ghanaian Construction Industry, Emmanuel Adinyira, Benjamin Botchway, Isaac Marmah Markwei
CIB Conferences
The construction industry in Ghana, unsurprisingly, remains one of the most hazardous sectors, underscoring the need for effective safety training interventions. This study investigates the perceived impact of safety training programs on construction workers’ safety performance in Ghana with the aim of proposing evidence-based recommendations to enhance training effectiveness. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was adopted, employing a stratified random sampling technique to select site workers, safety officers, and project managers from large (D1K1) and medium (D2K2) contractors. Data were collected from 306 respondents using a structured questionnaire that covered safety training characteristics, perceived effectiveness, safety knowledge, and performance indicators. …
Has The Construction Industry Become More Inclusive? A Diachronic Investigation Of Challenges And Changed Experiences Of Women In The Industry, Katerina Prevelianaki
Has The Construction Industry Become More Inclusive? A Diachronic Investigation Of Challenges And Changed Experiences Of Women In The Industry, Katerina Prevelianaki
CIB Conferences
A traditionally male dominated industry, construction always struggled to attract and retain women, and despite efforts and legislation encouraging equality and inclusion, women continue to be a minority in this space. Challenges women have faced have been documented; it is, nevertheless, unclear whether the same problems continue to occur in ways they did in the past, how the challenges have evolved over time, and how these have potentially brought a changed experience for women, while research investigating those issues diachronically is sparse. This paper adopts a retrospective approach on women in construction; it explores how the industry landscape has been …

Exploring The Interpersonal Stressors Of Safety Officers In The Construction Industry Via A Focus Group, Wenqian Yang, Mei-Yung Leung
CIB Conferences
The construction industry is inherently hazardous, making effective safety management critical for project success and worker well-being. Safety officers play a crucial role in the safety management system. They act as the central bridge for communication and coordination across all organizational levels, from top management and inter-departmental peers to frontline workers. Safety officers often face hostility, resistance, and social isolation due to the unique nature of their duties, as they frequently need to identify non-compliance and rectify the mistakes of colleagues and workers. Despite the complex interpersonal relationships in their daily work, the interpersonal stressors experienced by them still remain …

Designing First-Person 3d Simulation Training For Construction Occupational Health Hazards, Kenneth Lawani, Billy Hare, Alan Jack, Rowland Walker, Farhad Sadeghineko, Michael Tong
CIB Conferences
The level of awareness of occupational health hazards (OHH) in construction falls below that of occupational safety. This raises concern over the effectiveness of OHH interventions, specifically the quality of training provided to construction workers. Continuous exposure of workers to OHH has long-term implications on construction workers’ wellbeing as these are not easily detected. The aim of this paper is to explore the development of OHH training interventions. This study develops a prototype 3D simulation training to accentuate the consequences of workers’ exposure to construction OHH and how to mitigate such OHH with the right training. The core gameplay adopts …

A Prototype Predictive Risk Model For Transferable Safety Analytics In Construction Smes And Lmics, Nnedinma Umeokafor, Adedeji Ibitoye, Dinushan Sivaneswaran
CIB Conferences
Predictive safety analytics has gained increasing attention in construction research; however, its practical uptake remains limited in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and construction sectors in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where incident reporting is fragmented, and structured safety data are scarce. This study addresses this challenge by developing a transferable prototype for activity-level risk classification to support proactive safety decision-making in data-constrained environments. Publicly available construction incident data reported under Health and Safety Executive’s Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) framework for Great Britain are used as a methodological testbed to design and evaluate the model …

Self-Reported Ai Literacy And Scenario-Based Judgement In Academic Ai Use: Evidence From Undergraduate Construction Economics Students, Hang Thi Thu Nguyen, Duc Minh Nguyen, Bao-Ngoc Nguyen
CIB Conferences
The rapid uptake of generative AI in higher education has made student AI use increasingly common, but frequent use does not necessarily imply sound academic judgement. This study examines the relationship between self-reported AI literacy and scenario-based judgement among 379 undergraduate construction economics students at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE). A cross-sectional survey combined 32 self-reported AI literacy items across four dimensions with six scenario-based judgement tasks covering academic writing, problem solving, use of project data, and source verification. Descriptive statistics, reliability checks, and correlational analyses were used. Students reported moderately positive AI literacy across all four dimensions, yet …

From Compliance To Context - Integrating Cognitive Determinants To Inform Technology Driven Safety Communication In Construction, Amit Ajit Bhalerao, Nikhil Bugalia, Farnad Nasirzadeh
CIB Conferences
Construction safety communication, a central mechanism for hazard mitigation, has advanced along three global trajectories, namely symbolic standardization, cognitive diagnostics, and intelligent digital interventions. However, their combined insights have been minimally applied to the Indian construction context, where high fatality rates persist, disproportionate to the country’s share of the global workforce. By interviewing nine safety experts from various hierarchical levels in public, private, institutional sectors, and a professional body, this study explores how these trajectories are reflected in the Indian construction industry. Four thematic findings emerge: (1) attentional limitations responsible for failure of static safety communication channels; (2) organisational structures …

Enhancing Worker Wellbeing: The Impact Of Technological Ergonomic Interventions On Health, Safety And Productivity In The Construction Industry, Rose Matete, John Smallwood
Enhancing Worker Wellbeing: The Impact Of Technological Ergonomic Interventions On Health, Safety And Productivity In The Construction Industry, Rose Matete, John Smallwood
CIB Conferences
Ergonomic hazards such as repetitive motions, awkward postures, forceful exertions, and prolonged static positions continue to drive musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and productivity losses in construction. This structured narrative review synthesises literature from 2002–2025 relative to technological and participatory ergonomic interventions, drawing on major academic databases and International Labour Organization reports. Evidence shows that wearable sensors, exoskeletons, Virtual Reality training, Building Information Modelling, and Internet of Things enabled monitoring reduce biomechanical strain, enhance hazard recognition, and improve productivity, though adoption is limited by cost, worker acceptance, and organisational culture. Integrating ergonomics at the design stage and combining technology with participatory approaches …
The Effectiveness Of Health And Safety Practices On Peaking Power Stations, Nkosinathi Ndlovu, Claire Deacon, John Smallwood
The Effectiveness Of Health And Safety Practices On Peaking Power Stations, Nkosinathi Ndlovu, Claire Deacon, John Smallwood
CIB Conferences
Peaking Power Stations (PPSs) are required to undertake maintenance known as ‘outages’, on a regular basis. Injuries occur during general maintenance and outage activities. Such injuries in turn result in managers at PPSs perceiving health and safety (H&S) management as ineffective. The effectiveness of H&S management systems, particularly accident and incident reporting mechanisms, is critical for enhancing H&S performance in high-risk sectors such as power generation. Poor H&S performance could further result in lower production, higher insurance costs, and a detrimental financial impact on the economy, forcing workers to retire early with persistent disabilities. The aim of the study reported …

Spotting Power: Reframing Media Literacy In Civic Education, Kason Kendall
Spotting Power: Reframing Media Literacy In Civic Education, Kason Kendall
Democracy & Education
This article analyzes and critiques the tendency to frame media literacy as a neutral skill set concentrated on verifying sources, or "spotting the error." While this approach emphasizes cognitive habits of checking for bias and accuracy, it does not adequately prepare students to understand intentional misinformation as a political strategy. Building on Matthew's (2020) response to Curry and Cherner (2019), I propose that limiting media literacy to error correction hides the strategic production and intentional spread of disinformation by powerful organizations, corporations, and media outlets. Rooted in curriculum theory and the work of scholars such as Gramsci, Hall, Habermas, and …
How To Educate When Deliberation Falls Short? A Response To “Affective Alignment And Hidden Conflicts: Political Emotions In Blended Spaces Of Democratic Education Classrooms”, Anniina Leiviskä, Veli-Mikko Kauppi
How To Educate When Deliberation Falls Short? A Response To “Affective Alignment And Hidden Conflicts: Political Emotions In Blended Spaces Of Democratic Education Classrooms”, Anniina Leiviskä, Veli-Mikko Kauppi
Democracy & Education
Here, we explore potential educational strategies in response to the problems of democratic education highlighted in the feature article’s case study. Drawing on deliberative democracy and Deweyan pragmatism, we contend that in settings marked by affective polarization, such as the school examined in the case study, direct conversation over contentious political topics may not be the most effective path toward meaningful educational outcomes. Instead, we propose two alternative approaches: first, fostering dialogue about the social norms that shape the conditions for political deliberation in the classroom; and second, encouraging collaborative inquiry among students who hold opposing perspectives. Both approaches aim …
Teaching Politics As A Corrective To Pupils’ Immediate Conceptions.. A Response To "'The Blue Party? No, Wait, Is There Really A Blue Party?' A Study Of Young Norwegian Children's Perceptions Of Politics", Evy Jøsok
Democracy & Education
This response discusses the article “'The Blue Party? No, Wait, Is There Really a Blue Party?' A Study of Young Norwegian Children's Perceptions of Politics," which offers a meaningful contribution to research on children’s political understanding. The study stands out for its focus on the development of political categories and its strong link to subject content rather than generic skills. Its analytical typology—from nonpolitical and pre-political to narrow and broad political understanding—provides both theoretical insight and potential didactic value. The findings challenge assumptions that political education should be postponed until later school years, showing that young children can engage with …

Nurturing Engaged Citizenship In Kindergarten: An Exploration Of Teacher Beliefs And Practices, Daria Smirnova, Ilene R. Berson, Michael J. Berson
Democracy & Education
This study explores how kindergarten teachers foster civic engagement in young learners as part of a larger multi-case study on civic education in kindergarten classrooms serving low-income students in the Southeastern United States. Five teachers were interviewed using video elicitation techniques, which involved using video clips to prompt discussion and reflection. Findings indicate that teachers educate for civic engagement within the personally responsible and participatory paradigms of good citizenship (Westheimer & Kahne, 2004) and intuitively align their beliefs and practices with the Educating for American Democracy principles (EAD, 2021). Their efforts include modeling citizenship, fostering collaborative learning and community building, …

Young Children’S Civicness: A Close Look At Membership And Community, Katherina A. Payne, Sunmin Lee, Molly E. Mcmanus
Democracy & Education
As one of the first communities outside of young children’s private spheres of family, scholars consistently position school as an ideal space for civic education. At its core, civic education helps young children cultivate communities that support broader societal structures and mores. As children negotiate new constellations of people within a place, we wondered, what are some ways in which young children construct their membership in the initial civic communities that schools purport to cultivate? Drawing on data from a yearlong ethnographic study of three classrooms in a Head Start in a large city in Texas, we examine how children …
