Two Greek Inscriptions On Mosaics From The Theater At Shuni, Leah Di Segni
Two Greek Inscriptions On Mosaics From The Theater At Shuni, Leah Di Segni
'Atiqot
Two Greek inscriptions, set in a mosaic pavement in the pool adjoining the eastern side of the theater of Shuni, celebrate the foundation of this structure by the otherwise unknown governor of First Palestine Flavius Marcianus Antipater, whose term of office can be dated by his titulature to the second half of the fifth or the early sixth century CE. One of the inscriptions, though fragmentary, can be recognized as an epigram. Both inscriptions exhibit a high level of sophistication, fitting the site where they were found, the location of a renowned Maiumas festival known for its cultural refinement.

A Milestone Without A Road: A Distance Marker Below An Arch Of The High Aqueduct To Caesarea, Avner Ecker, Yotam Tepper, Avshalom Karasik
'Atiqot
A milestone located in Bet Ḥananya, below one of the arches of the Hadrianic High Aqueduct to Caesarea (Canal B), was subjected to a 3D scan. This technique enabled the reading of the inscription on the milestone and thereby, to date the stone to the period of the dual reign of Emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus (161–169 CE). It also became apparent that the stone marked the fourth mile station from Caesarea. This paper suggests that the milestone is in situ and marked a segment of the Roman imperial road between Caesarea and the legionary base at Legio. The …
A Nabataean Inscription Near ‘Avedat, Ohad Abudraham, Alexander Wiegmann
A Nabataean Inscription Near ‘Avedat, Ohad Abudraham, Alexander Wiegmann
'Atiqot
The corpus of surviving Nabataean inscriptions consists of thousands of graffiti written on rock faces and bedrock from Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Egypt, while a few such inscriptions are known from the Negev. The Nabataean inscription presented here was incised in the dark-brown patina of a limestone bedrock outcrop near ‘Avedat, a region dotted with many petroglyphs and inscriptions. The inscription is written in a typical Nabataean signature-type formula, comprising the name of the author preceded by a blessing and ending with the general greeting of well-being. The isolated location of the inscription should probably be connected with the historic …
Not A “Signet Ring” Of Pontius Pilatus, Werner Eck, Avner Ecker
Not A “Signet Ring” Of Pontius Pilatus, Werner Eck, Avner Ecker
'Atiqot
Gideon Foerster’s excavations at Herodium in 1968/69 yielded a simple ring, which was published only in 2018. The inscription on the ring was read as Πιλάτο(υ), i.e., ‘of Pilate.’ Various interpretations were offered for the inscription, all generally linking the ring directly or indirectly to Pilate. This paper shows that, apart from the problematic reading, everything we know about the Roman administration in the provinces speaks against such an assumption, especially the use of the Greek language in an administrative context in the first half of the first century. Alternative readings for the letters and other ways to understand them …

A copper-alloy object bearing an incised Aramaic inscription in lapidary script was found on the surface, about halfway up the hill of Tulûl Mas‘ud, in the Sharon plain. The object was recently studied by a multidisciplinary research group of specialists in archaeology, epigraphy, forensic science and analytical archaeology to better understand the artifact in its original cultural and spatial setting. The results attest that the object was probably connected with a nearby Persian-period sanctuary.

Evidence Of An Edomite Hebrew Scribal Cooperation From Tel MalhׅAta: One Ostracon–Two Scripts–Three Scribes?, Stefan Jakob Wimmer
'Atiqot
Among the epigraphic finds that Itzhaq Beit-Arieh published from Tel Malḥata, Inscription No. 4, the focus of this paper, is unique among the Iron Age ostraca, as it is written in both the Edomite and Hebrew languages. The context of the inscription is clear: a registration of amounts of one or more unknown commodities, with certain amounts described as ‘diminished.’ This paper offers a reassessment of Beit-Arie’s interpretation of the inscription, suggesting that it testifies to interaction and cooperation among several scribes adhering to different scribal dialects. It further discusses the broader implications of the inscription for the research of …

A New Assemblage Of ‘Private’ Stamped Jar Handles From The Mordot Arnona Excavations, Jerusalem, Neria Sapir, Nathan Ben-Ari, Ido Koch, Oded Lipschits
'Atiqot
The site of Mordot Arnona is located c. 750 m northeast of Ramat Raḥel, on the eastern outskirts of the Arnona neighborhood of Jerusalem. Recent salvage excavations at the site showed that in the late eighth and the first half of the seventh century BCE, Mordot Arnona held great significance in the physical and political landscape of the area south of Jerusalem, serving as an administrative center, as evidenced by its monumental structures and the dozens of stamped jar handles. In this paper we present for the first time a rare corpus of 17 jar handles bearing ‘private’ stamp impressions, …

Recommendations For Adapting Religious Materials For People With Aphasia, Allison Dahl
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study aimed to discover whether text adaptations for aphasia commonly applied to secular texts are also applicable to religious texts, as religious texts are often held in a special regard by religious people. This research included five participants with aphasia who consider themselves members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These participants indicated preferences using a 7-point scale between paired samples of religious text formatted using common aphasia-friendly text adaptations. These quantitative data were analyzed for preference trends. Additionally, qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews focused on adaptation preferences as well as aphasia’s effects on …

5-Substituted Flavones—Another Class Of Potent Triplex Dna-Specific Ligands As Antigene Enhancers, Landy Gu, Nghia Tran, Vanessa M. Rangel, Mandeep Singh, Krege M. Christison, Geoff P. Lin-Cereghino, Liang Xue
Pacific Faculty Work
In the field of drug development, the quest for novel compounds that bind to DNA with high affinity and specificity never ends. In the present work, we report the newest development in this field, namely, triplex DNA-specific binding ligands based on the 5-substituted flavone scaffold in our lab. Biophysical studies showed that the newly synthesized flavone derivatives (depending on the side chains) bind to triplex DNA with binding affinities better than or similar to 5-substituted 3,3′,4′,7-tetramethoxyflavonoids. These compounds selectively stabilize triplex DNA while having little effect on duplex DNA, as verified by various biophysical methods. A detailed structural analysis suggested …

Design, Synthesis, And Nmr-Guided Characterization Of A Targeted Covalent Inhibitor-Like Molecule Against Ivyp1 From P. Aeruginosa, Samuel Taylor Moore
Master's Theses
Multi-drug resistance poses a serious threat to future generations and historical antibiotic pipelines; consequently, the medical and economic burdens associated with treating multidrug-resistant bacteria are substantiated. In this context, P. aeruginosa (PA) emerges as one of the most significant healthcare challenges, being a leading cause of resistance-associated mortality worldwide. Despite modern efforts to combat these poor outcomes, drug-resistant cases continue to rise, and the need for novel antibiotic treatment is apparent. To this end, we investigated relevant resistance mechanisms and past antibiotic targets within PA, and in doing so, we identified relationships between peptidoglycan biology and a periplasmic protein, Inhibitor …
More Than Just A Grade: Factors Influencing Secondary Students’ Engagement With Digital Feedback, Mandy Prior
More Than Just A Grade: Factors Influencing Secondary Students’ Engagement With Digital Feedback, Mandy Prior
Dissertations
The increasing use of technology in secondary education has shifted teacher feedback practices to digital environments. While digital feedback offers many promising affordances, the factors that influence how students engage with and use digital feedback are not well understood. Previous research indicates that digital feedback poses unique challenges for engagement. New paradigm feedback models seek to identify processes and actions that promote feedback engagement. However, these models require further study in digital and pre-higher education contexts. This qualitative single-case study investigated the factors influencing secondary students' engagement with digital feedback. Data included 24 student interviews conducted across four grade levels …

Caenorhabditis elegans are model organisms frequently studied to better understand biological processes. They have short life spans and produce a large number of progeny. Additionally, many of their molecular development processes can be found in human, providing insight into cell death and cell fate. In this project, our research aims to create a triple mutant strain to test the importance of the pig-1 gene in the gonad of C. elegans. This strain carries the following alleles: ckb-3::degron; him-8; gfp::pig-1. The pig-1 gene has been previously studied in neuroblast cells in C. elegans and is required for …
Why Law "Beyond The State" Need Not Be A Threat To Democratic Values, Paul Schiff Berman
Why Law "Beyond The State" Need Not Be A Threat To Democratic Values, Paul Schiff Berman
Buffalo Law Review
Discussions of “law beyond the state” almost inevitably run into objections from those who believe that sub- or supranational legal orders necessarily subvert local democratic governance. Self-proclaimed populists and others express concern that the “will of the people” will be unduly subjected to the dictates of “cosmopolitan elites”1 or local factions, or corporate capture. These objections range across the political spectrum. Those on the right tend to focus on concerns that transnational orders will impose human rights or immigration rules on a national polity, while those on the left worry about trade regimes that might impose local labor or environmental …

Performance Evaluation Of Routing Protocols And Ml-Based Enhancements For Uav-Assisted Post-Disaster Communication Networks, Prachi Choudhary
Performance Evaluation Of Routing Protocols And Ml-Based Enhancements For Uav-Assisted Post-Disaster Communication Networks, Prachi Choudhary
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
During natural disasters, the existing communication systems collapse, and the disaster-affected areas become disconnected without any means of exchanging information. The collapse of existing communication networks poses challenges for First-Responders (FRs) in locating survivors during Search and Rescue (SAR) operations and for survivors to communicate for emergency aid. To alleviate post-disaster consequences and save lives, Uncrewed Air Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, can be employed to establish adaptable and reliable emergency communication networks. UAVs offer portability and rapid deployment, making them effective in crises. This thesis presents two main contributions: 1) Evaluation and Comparison of Routing Protocol Performance: The …
Synthesis Of Glycan Antigens For Therapeutic Antibodies And Glycoconjugate Vaccines, Synthesis Of An Inflammatory Pentasaccharide, And Design And Synthesis Of Ceragenins For Use In Medical Devices And Osteomyelitis, Shawn Gubler
Theses and Dissertations
A promising approach in combatting infections from antibiotic resistant bacteria/fungi is using therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that can bind the outer surfaces of microbes. We have developed a synthetic vaccine platform that can rapidly generate mAbs against surface glycans from desired strains, such as lipopolysaccharides and capsular polysaccharides. To create therapeutic antibodies against Ruminococcus gnavus, Burkholderia multivorans, and Staphylococcus aureus, we synthesize glycan antigens from each strain that are necessary for use in our glycoconjugate vaccine platform. Blooms of the Gram-positive bacterium Ruminococcus gnavus have been correlated with inflammatory bowel disease, and recently a polysaccharide produced by this organism was …
