Improving Chinese Hate Speech Detection With Bert-Fasttext Fusion And Bert-Bilstm Fusion, Methini Ma Jan 2025

Improving Chinese Hate Speech Detection With Bert-Fasttext Fusion And Bert-Bilstm Fusion, Methini Ma

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Hate speech detection is an essential technique in the online environment, especially on social media platforms. This technique helps to create a safer space and reduce the risk of real-world harm. In Chinese, this task is particularly challenging because of unique linguistic structures and the frequent use of indirect expressions, sarcasm, homophones, character variants, and abbreviations. This study investigates how to improve Chinese hate speech detection by combining BERT with FastText and BERT with BiLSTM. There are six model variants that are configured: frozen BERT and fine-tuned BERT, each further extended with either FastText sentence embeddings or a clause-level BiLSTM. …

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee Jan 2025

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research focuses on the development of two biopolymer-based colorimetric platforms for ammonia detection in environmental water and gaseous samples. To detect ammonia in water samples, an agarose hydrogel membrane containing salicylate, hypochlorite, and sodium nitroprusside was incorporated into a flow analysis system to perform the Berthelot reaction within the gel. Ammonium in the sample was converted to monochloramine in an alkaline reagent stream, and its subsequent interaction with the sensing membrane yielded an indosalicylate blue chromophore, causing the gel to change from pale yellow to green–blue as the ammonia concentration increased. Under the optimal operating conditions, the method provided …

"Students Can’T Write": An Assumption In Search Of Evidence, Carl Schlachte Jan 2025

"Students Can’T Write": An Assumption In Search Of Evidence, Carl Schlachte

Publications and Research

This article examines a set of 122 sources, from 1913 to the present, which claim that students "can’t write," finding that a significant proportion of these sources offer no evidence to support this claim. But even among those sources that do offer evidence, most of the support offered relies on measures few writing teachers would accept, like anecdotal claims, surface-level correctness, or standardized tests. As a result, this article questions how the claim that students can’t write has been allowed to stand for so long, even in scholarship, and suggests ways for writing teachers to resist its false logic.

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The qualitative research project examines the lived experience of acquired vision loss in adulthood and its impact on the way participants see themselves and the world around them, both sensorially and metaphorically. The research question, “What are the lived experiences of adults with acquired vision loss as they relate to identity and conceptions of self?” is informed by the researcher’s clinical practice as a psychotherapist in a low vision clinic. The dissertation includes a literature review focussed on the psychosocial aspects of vision loss to provide insight into the intended population and context for the study. Data for the phenomenological …

Immune Pathway Modulation In Melanoma Using Chitosan Nanoparticle-Mediated Dsrna Delivery, Bethel C. Iwuji Jan 2025

Immune Pathway Modulation In Melanoma Using Chitosan Nanoparticle-Mediated Dsrna Delivery, Bethel C. Iwuji

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division, which typically results in the formation of tumours. Even with advances in treatments, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death globally. Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer which is highly malignant, develops in the pigment-producing cells of the skin, melanocytes, and in the late stages of the disease poses a significant challenge for therapeutic intervention due to its multidrug resistance. The innate immune system is the first line of defence against invading pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi, and can recognize and destroy …

Terpenes Mitigate Thc-Induced Working Memory Deficits: Behavioural Evidence Of The Entourage Effect Using A 2-Component Operant Memory Task, Lara Mitchell Jan 2025

Terpenes Mitigate Thc-Induced Working Memory Deficits: Behavioural Evidence Of The Entourage Effect Using A 2-Component Operant Memory Task, Lara Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Most research on cannabis and cognitive function has focused on delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). However, this approach overlooks the complex chemical composition of cannabis products consumed by the public, which often includes cannabidiol (CBD) and various terpenes. These additional constituents may interact with THC to modulate its effects, a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. While this theory has gained traction, experimental evidence for the cognitive impact of terpenes in combination with THC remains limited. This study aimed to assess whether terpenes can mitigate THC-induced cognitive deficits using a 2-Component Operant Memory task. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received intraperitoneal injections of either …

Exploring The Role Of Collective Narcissism And Ideology In Support For Reparations, Melih Can Sahin Jan 2025

Exploring The Role Of Collective Narcissism And Ideology In Support For Reparations, Melih Can Sahin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Many societies with colonial histories have begun to grapple with their legacy of historical injustices and their ongoing consequences, leading to national apologies and sometimes consideration of reparations. In this context, it is important to understand the factors enhancing or impeding public support for reparations. This dissertation focused on the role of beliefs (ideology) and identity (collective narcissism) as predictors of support for reparations addressing historical injustices. Drawing from existing research, we expected that those higher in conservatism – and those higher in collective narcissism - would oppose reparations more strongly. We also examined the interaction between ideology and collective …

Inductions Of Long-Term Potentiation With Biomimetic Electromagnetic Fields In Primary Neurons, Cooper E. Kansala Jan 2025

Inductions Of Long-Term Potentiation With Biomimetic Electromagnetic Fields In Primary Neurons, Cooper E. Kansala

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Endogenous brain rhythms guide neural communication and plasticity, raising the question of whether weak, temporally structured electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that mimic these rhythms can modulate neuronal activity in a targeted, biomimetic manner. This thesis investigates whether patterned EMFs designed to reflect the temporal structure of hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) are more effective at inducing neural plasticity than conventional sinusoidal fields or no stimulation at all. Cortical neurons cultured from postnatal rats were exposed to patterned EMFs for 30 minutes and assessed across three distinct experimental domains. In Chapter 2, microelectrode array (MEA) recordings revealed that the LTP-patterned field significantly increased …

Evaluating The Credibility Of Online Websites: A Digital Information Literacy Program, Emily C. Wood, Kim P. Roberts Jan 2025

Evaluating The Credibility Of Online Websites: A Digital Information Literacy Program, Emily C. Wood, Kim P. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The plethora of information currently available via the internet is greater than ever before. Given this, finding credible information is an exceedingly complex task for any information consumer, but especially so for children. Research shows that children have difficulty evaluating the credibility of online information and are more susceptible to believing misinformation compared to adolescents. While a growing body of research addresses children’s internet use, most research focuses on technology safety rather than the evaluation of online information. Several studies have found digital information literacy (DIL) interventions to be successful at increasing critical thinking and awareness of the criteria to …

The Experiences Of Mothering With An Intimate Partner Violence-Related Brain Injury, Emily L. Sebben Miss Jan 2025

The Experiences Of Mothering With An Intimate Partner Violence-Related Brain Injury, Emily L. Sebben Miss

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

One in three Canadian women will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime, and 75% of them have a probable brain injury (BI) (Haag et al., 2022). Despite the recent growth of IPV-BI research, many survivors remain undiagnosed and many aspects remain unexplored. The experiences of being a mother with an IPV-related BI has been left untold. These gaps leave frontline workers with little guidance in supporting survivors who are specifically mothers. This research reports on a qualitative study exploring the lived experiences of mothering with an IPV-BI. The study uses a constructivist worldview and hermeneutic phenomenology to amplify …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

“Just Checking”: Racial Profiling and the Criminalization of Black Students at Post-Secondary Institutions

This dissertation examined the experiences of Black students who came into contact with campus security at five universities and one college in Ontario, Canada. Critical race theory and methodology, and qualitative research design amplified the voices of 17 participants who shared stories of racial profiling marked by racialization, criminalization, surveillance, and the normalized scrutiny of Black life. These experiences are legitimized by post-secondary institutions that are actively reproducing the very racism they are often celebrated for interrogating by allowing a culture of anti-Black racism to exist with …

Enhanced Multidimensional Harmonic Retrieval In Mimo Wireless Channel Sounding, Yanming Zhang, Wenchao Xu, A. Long Jin, Tianquan Tang, Min Li, Peifeng Ma, Lijun Jiang, Steven Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a recursive parallel dynamic mode decomposition (RPDMD) scheme tailored for multidimensional harmonic retrieval (MHR), specifically applied to MIMO wireless channel sounding. The RPDMD algorithm is devised to address the complexities inherent in multidimensional scenarios, leveraging the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) framework within a recursive parallel structure. Initially, the observed tensorial multidimensional harmonic data is transformed into a two-dimensional matrix format along the r-th dimension. Subsequently, DMD dissects this matrix data into eigenvalues and their associated modes. The real and imaginary components of the DMD eigenvalues yield damping factors and frequencies in the r-th dimension, respectively. Furthermore, recursive …

Mapping Biomedical Ontology Terms To Ids: Effect Of Domain Prevalence On Prediction Accuracy, Thanh Son Do, Daniel B. Hier, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study evaluates the ability of large language models (LLMs) to map biomedical ontology terms to their corresponding ontology IDs across the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO), Gene Ontology (GO), and UniProtKB terminologies. Using counts of ontology IDs in the PubMed Central (PMC) dataset as a surrogate for their prevalence in the biomedical literature, we examined the relationship between ontology ID prevalence and mapping accuracy. Results indicate that ontology ID prevalence strongly predicts accurate mapping of HPO terms to HPO IDs, GO terms to GO IDs, and protein names to UniProtKB accession numbers. Higher prevalence of ontology IDs in the biomedical …

A Cost-Effective Nilm Solution With Three-Point Labelling And Non-Causal Convolution Technique, Yanan Zhang, Gan Zhou, Yanjun Feng, Zhan Liu, Li Huang, Zhi Li, Rui Bo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although deep learning is increasingly promising in the field of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) these days, the high costs of data recording and labelling represent a significant challenge for the training of supervised models. To address this, a cost-effective sequence-to-points NILM solution is proposed, integrating three-point labelling with non-causal convolution techniques. The approach introduces a semi-automatic labelling framework for obtaining NILM three-point data, which provides a low-cost data collection and labelling solution for large-scale applications. Then, a novel loss function combining coordinate loss and confidence loss is developed to address the positional misalignment and negative sample confusion in sequence-to-points scenario …

A Hybrid Method For Source Direction Finding With Radio Frequency Interference And Gaussian White Noise, Yanming Zhang, Wenchao Xu, Antonios Argyriou, A. Long Jin, Tianquan Tang, Peifeng Ma, Lijun Jiang, Steven Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a hybrid data-driven method, termed moving average-Hankel-dynamic mode decomposition (MAHankDMD), for joint direction of arrival (DOA) and frequency estimation in environments affected by both radio frequency interference (RFI) and Gaussian white noise. The proposed approach integrates two key components: (1) a moving average-DMD filter that effectively mitigates Gaussian white noise and separates RFI from the source signal, and (2) a Hankel-DMD method that accurately estimates the DOA of the filtered signal and associates it with the corresponding frequency. The moving average-DMD stage first enhances the signal-to-noise ratio and improves the robustness of the estimation process through noise …

Impact Of Voltage Regulator Modules On Power Distribution Network Impedance, Hanyu Zhang, Zhiping Yang, Alvis Hsu, Ryan Hou, Chulsoon Hwang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The voltage regulator module (VRM) impacts the power distribution network (PDN) impedance in the low frequency range. The effect of VRM is essential for reliable PDN analysis and simulation. However, the existing VRM models for power integrity (PI) simulation lack an in-depth understanding of the effect of the feedback control in the VRM. In this paper, the impact of the VRM control loop on the PDN impedance is investigated. The relationship between the VRM output impedance and the PDN impedance at the IC input pin is derived. The output impedance of a VRM is analyzed using small signal analysis. Eventually, …

Extended S-Parameter Model Of The Power Distribution Network For Rapid Coupling Predictions, Cody Goins, Aaron Harmon, Mckennan Starkey, Kristen Donnell, Victor Khilkevich, Daryl Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power and return planes are part of the power delivery network of almost all modern high frequency printed circuit boards. These power and return planes can form the basis of unintended radiated emissions from, or radiated coupling to, these boards. Predicting coupling to complex systems is a difficult problem and typically reserved for full wave simulations. Recent works have introduced segmentation approaches that are able to predict coupling to complex printed circuit board designs by using pre-rendered segments and cascading these segments through a circuit solver approach. The extended S-parameter models used by the segmentation approach currently do not include …

Introduction: Brain stimulation techniques are critical for unraveling the innerworkings of complex neuronal pathways governing both normal physiological function and pathologic states in neurological disorders. Focused ultrasound (FUS) is an emerging technique poised to significantly alter central nervous system (CNS) drug delivery and neuroscience research through non-invasive means. Magnetogenetics is a brain stimulation technique which may benefit from FUS technology in that alternating magnetic fields (AMF), like FUS, can pass through the skull without requiring surgery.

Methodology: Magnetogenetics involves the deposition of superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and overexpression of thermoreceptor transmembrane proteins (e.g. TRPV1 and TRPA1) in the brain. When …

Phenotypic and genetic relationships between white matter microstructure (i.e., fractional anisotropy [FA]) and peripheral inflammatory responses (i.e., circulating cytokines) have important implications for health and disease. However, it is unclear whether previously discovered genetic correlations between the two traits are due to tissue‐specific white matter architecture or increased free water in the extracellular space. We applied a two‐compartment model to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data and estimated tissue‐specific white matter microstructure (FAT) and free water volume (FW). We then quantified their heritability and their genetic correlations with two peripherally circulating proinflammatory cytokines (IL‐8 and TNFα), and compared these correlations to …

Background and Purpose

Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has become the standard of care for treatment of acute ischemic stroke secondary to large vessel occlusion up to 24 h from the last known normal time. With ADAPT and SOLUMBRA techniques, classically, a large bore aspiration catheter is delivered over a microcatheter and microwire crossing the clot to perform thrombectomy. Recently, a novel macrowire (Colossus 035 in.) has been introduced as a potential alternative to the use of microwire-microcatheter to allow the delivery of the aspiration catheter (ID = 0.070 in. up to 0.088 in.) over a macrowire alone.

Applying Machine Learning And Optimization Algorithms To Perform Feature Selection, Shizhao Yu Jan 2025

Applying Machine Learning And Optimization Algorithms To Perform Feature Selection, Shizhao Yu

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The objective of feature selection in the realms of machine learning and data mining is integral, serving as an efficient mechanism to eradicate redundant or irrelevant features, and subsequently augmenting the performance of predictive models. In the contemporary landscape of big data, with the escalating dimensionality of datasets, the efficacy of traditional feature selection methodologies is compromised, due to their computational complexity and ineptitude in addressing the curse of dimensionality. This thesis posits a pioneering feature selection framework that amalgamates machine learning with advanced optimization algorithms. The methodology employs a Support Vector Machine (SVM), in conjunction with a cutting-edge metaheuristic …

The Design And Synthesis Of New Materials Using Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions, Lavneet Kaur, Kenneth E. Maly

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Abstract The overall objective of this research was to synthesize and study the structure-property relationships of novel polycyclic aromatic compounds capable of producing open crystalline networks based on π-stacking interactions in solid state. In this work, we describe a method of producing polycyclic aromatic compounds bearing electron-rich and electron-poor rings in order to promote cofacial π-stacking in the solid state. These compounds were synthesized from easily accessible molecules using nucleophilic aromatic substitution and copper-catalyzed aryl amination. The scope of phenoxazines bearing N-aryl substituents was explored for the synthesis of various polycyclic aromatic compounds. Interesting characteristics such as luminescence and predictable …

Social Behavior & Personality In Corn Snakes, Maggie-Rose Johnston Jan 2025

Social Behavior & Personality In Corn Snakes, Maggie-Rose Johnston

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The sociality of snakes, long thought simplistic, has been shown to be governed by a host of different factors such as kinship, experience, sex, weight and personality. There is, however, still a need to untangle how snakes prioritize different kinds of information when interacting. I hypothesized that examining each dyad that composes a group could partly predict how individuals would behave in a larger group context, providing insight into the mechanisms governing aggregation. Six groups of six corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus) had their personalities tested, then underwent dyadic interactions with each member of their cohort followed by a …

Coupling Remote Sensing And Modelling To Monitor The Spatial Distribution And Trends Of Surface Temperature And Ice Thickness On Sub-Arctic Lakes, Gifty Attiah

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Lake surface temperature (LST), lake ice thickness (LIT), and lake ice phenology (LIP) play significant roles in the diverse regional processes of freshwater in cold regions. They offer direct indications of regional weather and climate conditions, and their interactions with the atmosphere impact climate processes. Furthermore, lake ice is valuable to northern communities, such as those in the Northwest Territories (NWT). Ice roads, including the longest ice road in the NWT, spanning over 80 lakes, are constructed during winter to haul goods to and from industrial establishments (e.g., mines) and for travel within and between communities. A significant challenge to …

The Impacts Of Permafrost Thaw Slumps On Arctic Stream Ecology, Maria Dolan Jan 2025

The Impacts Of Permafrost Thaw Slumps On Arctic Stream Ecology, Maria Dolan

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Climate change is intensifying permafrost thaw across terrain of the circumpolar Arctic. Increased temperatures and rainfall at northern latitudes have resulted in the expansion of thermokarst features such as retrogressive thaw slumps, which make previously frozen debris available for transport into nearby river systems. In the Peel Plateau, Northwest Territories, the mobilization of these materials exposes rivers to a large quantity of sediment and solutes that may act as a chronic, press disturbance, potentially altering stream food webs. Here, I examine if: 1) thaw slumps have driven changes to the physical and biological properties of slump impacted streams since an …

The true crime genre receives enormous attention and serves for many as the primary source of crime knowledge, including who commits crime, how they commit crime and how law enforcement responds. Books and podcasts have been interrogated by researchers to understand the nature of the content but missing are the true crime documentaries and docuseries that have dominated streaming platforms in North America. The present study examined three true crime series about serial killers using social constructionism and social problems theory, and …

Children's Interpretation Of Others' Faces Covered With Medical Masks, Sevval Cinar Jan 2025

Children's Interpretation Of Others' Faces Covered With Medical Masks, Sevval Cinar

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

How we recognize and regulate emotions is fundamental to overall health and wellbeing. Emotional recognition and understanding are key to proper communication and emotion regulation. Barriers, such as masks, might have an impact on the way children recognize and interpret others' emotions, and therefore the way they learn, communicate, and regulate their own. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated widespread mask-wearing, raising questions about its impact on children’s emotional development. Using a sample of children with varying levels of exposure to mask wearing adults (N= 13, ages 4 to 6), we investigated how prolonged mask wearing predicts emotion recognition, particularly …
