Sex Crimes And Progressive Prosecution: Reimagining Sex Offenses And Sorn Laws As An Opportunity For Criminal Justice Reform, Kana Turley
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
As progressive efforts to reform the U.S. criminal legal system continue to take form, one category of crime has been consistently overlooked: sex offenses. While the carceral system is often condemned for its excessive punitiveness, severe punishments for sex offenders remain largely unchallenged and even popular. A primary example of these punishments is sex offender registration and notification (SORN) laws, which significantly constrain the lives of sex offenders after they have served their time in prison. Though subject to decades of empirical criticism from scholars, much of which has found that SORN laws have no significant impact on sex offender …

Fortifying Nuclear Security: Cultivating Vigilance Culture Among Personnel For Enhanced Prevention And Response, Sabariah Kader Ibrahim, Sonia Naz
International Journal of Nuclear Security
A vigorous nuclear security culture is crucial in preventing the theft and sabotage of nuclear material. It requires vigilance from all employees because relying solely on closed-circuit television systems and security personnel is insufficient to deter potential threats. Employee attentiveness plays a vital role in recognizing and preventing suspicious activities. However, achieving a strong security culture is challenging because of the lack of incidents in some facilities, leading to employee complacency.
This paper highlights the pivotal role of personnel in the success of nuclear security measures, emphasizing the need for a proactive and vigilant mindset among staff. Through the analysis …

Women In Nuclear Security: The United Arab Emirates Story, Mohamad Z. Zineddin
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Historically in the United Arab Emirates, security personnel stationed at nuclear sites were typically men with military or policing backgrounds. Although these groups bring important, transferrable skills and experience to the nuclear security mission, some Emirati stakeholders recognize the increased benefit of a greater diversity of voices and backgrounds within the nuclear security team hierarchy. By recruiting from a wider range of disciplines and encouraging gender diversity, the security team could develop broader insight into security challenges, and a greater variety of perspectives could bring forth more innovative solutions.
When aligning a diverse, multinational workforce with a common mission, all …

Spanish-Speaking Parents' Comprehension Of School-Based Speech Therapy Documentation, Daria Hernandez
LEAD Scholars Academy Showcase
Navigating speech-language therapy in schools can feel overwhelming for many families, and for Hispanic parents, language barriers and limited health literacy (HL) skills may intensify this challenge. There is a significant gap in research on health literacy strategies used by school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). This issue becomes more critical when examining how Spanish-speaking parents navigate Spanish translations of essential documents like IEPs. This gap emphasizes the urgent need for research in this area, and my project seeks to help address it.

Last-Minute Coordination: Adapting To Demand To Support Last-Mile Operations, Kedong Chen, Hung-Chung Su, Kevin Linderman, William Li
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
In the highly competitive e-commerce industry, customer-facing warehouses are crucial as the “order penetration points” for e-commerce last-mile operations. This research examines how warehouses use last-minute coordination, an unstructured mechanism, to ensure sufficient inventory at the order penetration points. Previous research has focused on structured mechanisms like contracts and inventory management systems to enhance warehouse performance. However, these mechanisms can be ineffective when faced with unforeseen local contingencies. To adjust inventory and adapt to changes in supply and/or demand, warehouses need to engage in unstructured, last-minute coordination with other warehouses. Using coordination and loose coupling theories, we find that coordinating …

A Spoofing Speech Detection Method Combining Multi-Scale Features And Cross-Layer Identification, Hongyan Yuan, Linjuan Zhang, Baoning Niu, Xianrong Zheng
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Pre-trained self-supervised speech models can extract general acoustic features, providing feature inputs for various speech downstream tasks. Spoofing speech detection, which is a pressing issue in the age of generative AI, requires both global information and local features of speech. The multi-layer transformer structure in pre-trained speech models can effectively capture temporal information and global context in speech, but there is still room for improvement in handling local features. To address this issue, a speech spoofing detection method that integrates multi-scale features and cross-layer information is proposed. The method introduces a multi-scale feature adapter (MSFA), which enhances the model’s ability …
Cryo-Em Reveals The Mechanochemical Cycle Of Reactive Full-Length Human Dynein-1, Pengxin Chai
Cryo-Em Reveals The Mechanochemical Cycle Of Reactive Full-Length Human Dynein-1, Pengxin Chai
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Dynein is a microtubule-based motor protein complex that generates force and drives movement toward the minus ends of microtubules. Despite extensive structural, biochemical, and biophysical studies, key questions remain about how dynein achieves its unidirectional stepping and force-generating powerstroke through its ATP-dependent mechanochemical cycle. In this dissertation, I leverage recent advances in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and develop novel cryo-EM image processing methods to elucidate the atomic-level details of the mechanochemical cycle of full-length cytoplasmic dynein-1. I directly visualize the conformational landscape of dynein both on and off microtubules, uncovering several novel and important reactive intermediates. These findings include the discovery …
Cognition Is Associated With Daily-Life Mobility In People With Parkinson’S Disease, Pablo Burgos
Cognition Is Associated With Daily-Life Mobility In People With Parkinson’S Disease, Pablo Burgos
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Introduction: Cognitive impairment is common in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Mobility is also impaired in people with PD and functional mobility often requires cognitive dual-tasking to navigate complex environments in daily life. We hypothesized that visuospatial and executive cognitive dysfunction in people with PD will be associated with digital measures of mobility in daily life. Since freezing of gait (FoG) is associated with both cognitive dysfunction and mobility impairments, we also examined the influence of FoG on the cognitionmobility relationship. Here, we investigated, for the first time, the association between cognition and dailylife mobility in PD and the influence …

Responsiveness Of Promis Measures For Hip, Knee, And Shoulder Arthroplasty, Ryan Jacobson
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Objectives: In hip, knee, and shoulder arthroplasty, there is evidence that using a broader set of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures beyond Physical Function and Pain Interference might improve assessment of patient outcomes. However, the utility and responsiveness of PROMIS domains measuring anxiety, fatigue, sleep, and social participation have been minimally investigated in arthroplasty. This retrospective study aimed to determine the 1) responsiveness of seven PROMIS domains and 2) association between change scores for all seven domains and MCID improvement in Physical Function and/or Pain Interference.
Methods: PROMIS domains of Physical Function, Pain Interference, Depression, Anxiety, Fatigue, Sleep …
Personalized Versus Fixed Tactile Cueing In Parkinson’S Disease: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial On Gait Automaticity, Pablo Burgos
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Background
Gait automaticity, the ability of the brain to control locomotion with minimal use of executive-attentional resources, is altered in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Recently, we showed that step-synchronized tactile cueing improved gait regularity and freezing of gait in PD; however, it is not known if this cueing mode also improves gait automaticity. Thus, this study investigates the effects of step-synchronized tactile cueing (versus fixed cueing) on gait automaticity in the laboratory and during daily life.
Methods
This is a pilot, randomized, double-blinded study where sixty participants with PD will be randomized into one of two, cueing interventions: 1) …

Puccini’S Manon: A Holistic Approach To Role Preparation And Execution, Sandra Oman Farren
Doctoral
The fulcrum of this thesis is operatic role preparation and execution, an investigation into how the conscientious singer-actor can ‘become’ the character of ‘Manon’ in Giacomo Puccini’s 1893 opera, Manon Lescaut. Adopting a multi-stranded research strategy, encompassing traditional methodologies, a series of lived experience interviews with international operatic practitioners, and a survey of live performances in 2023–2024, the actuality of performing this complex role is considered, with recommendations and conclusions drawn from a multiplicity of sources.

Modern Classical Christian Education?, Donna Lybarger
Master of Arts in Classical Studies
This thesis asks if the ancient tradition of classical education is an education method for the modern world. More specifically, this thesis questions, how might classical education methods be implemented for the acquisition of wisdom in the modern world? The literature review gives a brief history of classical education from the Greeks, and a history of why classical education is again a topic of conversation in the modern world. The three stages of classical education, the trivium, is explained. Classical Christian education is defined noting the method remains the same, but the difference is the nuances of the virtues of …

Abstract
CRITICAL THEORY AND THE DECLINE OF AMERICAN PATRIOTISM
Caron Norton
Southeastern University, 2025
Nationwide there has been a progressive decline in patriotism since the turn of the 21st century. Instead of growing in affection towards their country, more and more American citizens reach adulthood frustrated and angry with the United States and its heritage. Some become consumed with hatred. Rather than honoring America’s forefathers, Americans have torn down and desecrated statues and symbols from the past. Where did this antipatriotic fervor come from? How did Americans become disillusioned? This shift in mood can be directly attributed to the rise …
Development Of An Ecg-Based Deep Learning Model For Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease (Chd) Diagnosis, Annbar Mekouar
Development Of An Ecg-Based Deep Learning Model For Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease (Chd) Diagnosis, Annbar Mekouar
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
Congenital heart disease (CHD) stands as the leading congenital anomaly which affects pediatric populations throughout the world. The effectiveness of treatment depends on both early diagnosis and accurate identification but echocardiography requires manual interpretation which proves time-consuming and inconsistent especially when examining pediatric patients with their distinct cardiac systems. The research aims to create a deep learning-based diagnostic framework which uses ECG data to identify coronary artery disease subtypes in pediatric patients. The model uses high-quality datasets from Dr. Ignacio Lugones to extract R-R intervals and QRS durations through convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The system addresses pediatric-specific challenges while enhancing …
A Machine Learning Based Framework For Predicting Drug Cardiotoxicity Using A Combination Of Ecg Biomarkers And Drug Dosage Data, Jamie Wong
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
Drug-induced cardiotoxicity presents a significant challenge in clinical practice and drug clinical development, particularly with medications that modulate calcium, potassium, and sodium channels that influence cardiac electrophysiology. Clinical practice often relies on QTc prolongation alone as a predictor, which lacks specificity and may lead to excluding other safe therapeutic options. To address this limitation, this study integrates electrocardiogram (ECG) biomarkers with normalized drug dosage data to improve the accuracy of cardiotoxicity risk prediction using machine learning techniques. ECG features, including QT, QRS, RR, and PR intervals, were analyzed alongside normalized dosage data to account for dose-dependent cardiac effects. A physiologically …
My Pillow Or Yours?: Balancing Personal Property Rights And Government Interests, Griffin Roster
My Pillow Or Yours?: Balancing Personal Property Rights And Government Interests, Griffin Roster
Missouri Law Review
When an individual is involved in a criminal investigation, the government may obtain a valid warrant allowing agents to seize property related to the alleged criminal activity. The government may seize personal property because it is either contraband or evidence of the crime being investigated. The types of property the government can seize are vast, ranging from $65,000 to sixty-five-million-year-old dinosaur bones, to something as personal as an individual’s private cell phone. Ultimately, when the government has a valid warrant to seize property, there is not much an individual can do to prevent the seizure.

There exists a consistent partisan gap in preferences for public spending on the environment, with approval being 20 to 40 percentage points higher for Democrats than Republicans. In this paper, we investigate whether there is a similar partisan gap present in residential preferences for environmental amenities. We link housing data, land use, and household characteristics, including voter registration, for three distinct housing markets, and we develop a residential sorting model to estimate marginal willingness-to-pay (MWTP) for residential proximity to conserved land, allowing for preference heterogeneity by partisanship as well as other household characteristics. For all households combined, we estimate average …

Biology Dissertations - Archive
Symbiotic associations with microbes are widespread across life and provide hosts with essential and beneficial functions. A growing concern in pest management is symbiont-mediated detoxification (SMD), a form of metabolic resistance to insecticides. The best-known example of SMD involves the bean bug Riptortus pedestris, where an environmentally acquired but obligate Caballeronia symbiont confers resistance to the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion. Motivated by this model, I began my work in another known bug-Caballeronia symbiosis: Leptoglossus phyllopus, native to the United States. I then expanded the study to include two additional U.S.-native hosts, Leptoglossus zonatus and Anasa tristis. Representative …

The prevalence of drugged driving has increased in the United States. Some drugged driving may be unintentional as prescription medications used as sleeping aids, like zolpidem, cause impairment after the predicted duration of therapeutic action has elapsed. The aim of this study was to determine if nighttime administration of alprazolam, a drug commonly prescribed off-label as a sleeping aid, impacts driving performance the following day. Participants were healthy adults (n = 15) who completed a double-blind, double-dummy, within-subjects inpatient study examining the effects of nighttime administration of alprazolam (0.5, 1, and 2 mg), zolpidem (10 mg), and placebo on driving …
Hungarian Ruling Political Party Fidesz’S ‘Soft Power’ Use Of Religion: Themes, Networks, Partnerships, Alexander Faludy
Hungarian Ruling Political Party Fidesz’S ‘Soft Power’ Use Of Religion: Themes, Networks, Partnerships, Alexander Faludy
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This article aims to stimulate better understanding of Fidesz’s use of religion as a ‘soft power’ tool. Exploring the Hungarian government’s ‘soft power’ has lately engaged the attention of professional researchers. The use of religious messaging, networks, and opinion formers to propagate positive images of Fidesz abroad has, however, largely been overlooked. This essay argues that such use has been both substantial and successful. The article’s primary focus will be on the use made of Christianity in government aligned communications and network building. Attention will, however, also be paid to the subsidiary roles played by Fidesz’s outreach to both Jewish …
