Deeds That Demons Would Be Ashamed Of: The Kkk, Justice, And Bystanders., Michael J. Aaron
The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era
Abstract: The Ku Klux Klan used a number of tactics to impact the judicial system of the South, tactics that can be seen in public interviews of Congress’s Report of the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States. Intimidation was a powerful and widespread strategy of the KKK to create fear and inhibit the judicial system. Deception was also key to KKK activities, as many times KKK crimes went unprosecuted due to the secrecy of the offenders. Some popular support for what the KKK stood for and judges who were either ineffective …

Regional Differences In Australian Export Grain Supply Chain Velocities And Their Implications, Ross Kingwell, Hemali Kanthilanka
Regional Differences In Australian Export Grain Supply Chain Velocities And Their Implications, Ross Kingwell, Hemali Kanthilanka
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
The size of grain harvests are increasing in most Australian states, enabling farmers to supply increasing volumes of grain to domestic and international customers. There is a market preference to supply international customers in the months prior to the availability of the northern hemisphere grain harvest that commences from June. To expedite export sales of Australian grain, most owners and operators of regional export grain supply chains in Australia are increasing their investments in the velocity, reliability, and capacity of their export grain supply chains. Larger volumes of Australian grain are now more rapidly exported. But what are the ramifications …
Structure–Property Relationships Mediated By Lone Pairs And Vacancies In Oxychalcogenides: A Combined Experimental And Theoretical Study, Hoa Hn Nguyen
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Structure–property relationships in some oxychalcogenide materials are strongly governed by the interplay between stereochemically active lone pairs and anion vacancy formation. Through a combination of density functional theory (DFT), synchrotron and neutron total scattering and optical characterization, this work elucidates how local symmetry breaking, chemical substitution, and vacancy dynamics influence electronic and optical behavior across several lone pair-containing systems. In crystalline TeO2, all three polymorphs exhibit wide band gaps with Te4+ 5s2 lone pairs contributing significantly near the valence band edge. Oxygen vacancy formation is thermodynamically favorable and induces asymmetric charge redistribution and enhanced polarizability, supporting …

Enhancing Wellbeing Through Caregiver Support: Improving Quality Of Life For Individuals With Special Needs And Complex Medical Diagnoses In Nicaragua, Jenna K. Devchand
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
Individuals with disabilities living all over the world are constantly faced with additional barriers. In low-income countries, such as Nicaragua, there is often a gap in access to resources and education, for both individuals living with disabilities and their caregivers. Access is essential to provide high quality care to meet unique needs. This occupational therapy doctoral capstone project was created to support individuals providing care to children with special needs and complex medical diagnoses in Nicaragua by providing community-based education and sustainable resources to caregivers to enhance wellbeing in daily life. The deliverable was presented in country in Nicaragua to …
The Irony Of Humphrey's Executor & The Separation Of Powers Doctrine, Nicholas R. Barrow
The Irony Of Humphrey's Executor & The Separation Of Powers Doctrine, Nicholas R. Barrow
St. Thomas Law Review
The vestiges of the Humphrey’s Executor1 exception for independent agencies are crumbling. Just as with Chevron, the Roberts Court—particularly in the turbulent wake of Free Enterprise, Lucia, and Seila Law—has seemed to suggest that Humphrey’s days are numbered. When Consumers’ Research v. Consumer Product Safety Commission finally arrived at the doorstep of the high Court, the inevitable had seemingly arrived—Humphrey’s was finally to fall. Yet there were not four votes to hear the case. The Fifth Circuit was so hotly divided amongst itself as to Humphrey’s continued meaning and applicability to modern administrative agencies that a bare-thin majority (9-8) concluded …
Gendered Racism And Asian American Men’S Hazardous Alcohol Use: The Role Of Drinking To Cope, Emil K. Turdukulov, Thomas P. Le
Gendered Racism And Asian American Men’S Hazardous Alcohol Use: The Role Of Drinking To Cope, Emil K. Turdukulov, Thomas P. Le
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Gendered racism has been previously associated with greater alcohol use among Asian American men (AAM), yet the mechanisms underlying this association are not fully understood. This study thus investigated whether gendered racism is associated with hazardous alcohol use among AAM directly and indirectly via drinking to cope and resistance and empowerment against racism. 253 AAM (M = 36.75 years old) completed an online cross-sectional survey that contained the study questionnaires. Hierarchical regression analyses examined the association between gendered racism and hazardous alcohol use, and mediation analyses investigated whether drinking to cope and resistance and empowerment against racism underlied this …

An Analysis Of Alcohol, Mental Health, And Suicide, Motassem Bayyoud, Megan Galluch
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Suicide rates in Montana, Iowa, Ohio, and New Jersey vary strongly and encompass the wide range seen across all fifty states in America. Previous research has told us that there is a significant relationship between Alcohol Use Disorder and the ideation, attempt, and completion of suicide. Additionally, most people who are victims of suicide suffer from mental disorders. People use alcohol to cope with mental health and alcohol leads to deteriorating and adverse outcomes in a person’s life. To attempt to better understand the relationship between these variables and why suicide rates differ so widely, an analysis of binge drinking, …
The Failings Of Post-War Japanese Antitrust Reforms, Gregory Hayes
The Failings Of Post-War Japanese Antitrust Reforms, Gregory Hayes
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
This paper discusses the antitrust reform measures taken during the occupation of Japan following the end of World War II. These antitrust reforms included the dissolution of the zaibatsu business groups and the adoption of the Antimonopoly Act. However, the trust-busting and antitrust measures taken by Japan failed to prevent the eventual rise of keiretsu business groups and lower the concentration of corporate ownership in Japan. The primary reasons behind this failure were the inability of the reformers to fully dismantle the zaibatsu business groups and the changing priorities of the reformers due to the growing threat of the spread …

Exploring The Socioeconomic Drivers Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Prevalence And Their Implications For Treatment In The Midwest, Kendall Locascio, Anirudha Koppaka
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a leading chronic disease globally with its prevalence steadily rising and significantly impacting public health systems. Previous research has indicated correlations between resource scarcity, low income, and limited education completion and T2DM prevalence. However, the degree of influence of these factors on incidence and progression remains unclear. This study aims to identify the most significant socioeconomic determinants of T2DM prevalence and progression in the Midwest to aid healthcare providers in creating maximally effective T2DM treatment plans. Methods include using data from County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R) for Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. We …
Public International Air Lawfare: China’S Use And Abuse Of The Skies., Major Emily K. Johnson
Public International Air Lawfare: China’S Use And Abuse Of The Skies., Major Emily K. Johnson
American University National Security Law Brief
Following World War II, China entered a years-long period of civil war between the Kuomintang government, which was then in power as the government of the Republic of China, and the Chinese Communist Party. After years of conflict, the Kuomintang was forced to retreat to the island of Taiwan in 1949, effectively and reluctantly ceding the Chinese mainland to the Chinese Communist Party. Despite its best efforts, the Kuomintang never regained control of mainland China in the ensuing years; however, it never dissolved and instead remained in place on Taiwan.
As a result, Taiwan, which lies a mere 80-100 miles …

Faculty Research 2026
A proposed interdisciplinary fetal neonatal neurology collaborative offers life-course brain health training across three time-sensitive teaching opportunities. The educational organization includes a broad representation of inter-related fields. Formal training will re-enforce career-long learning that fosters creative thinking. Acquiring a life-course perspective of brain health can contribute solutions to the global public health crisis involving neurological and mental health disorders across the lifespan. Teaching transdisciplinary interventions begins with parental childhood and reproductive health which will influence the maternal-placental-fetal triad throughout pregnancy into labor and delivery. The second teaching opportunity focuses on the symptomatic minority who receive neonatal neurocritical care and convalescent …

Panic! At The Supreme Court, Nathan J. Arnold
SPARK Symposium Presentations
The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) has led to a decrese in public trust for the institution. This piece looks at whether there has been an increase in ideologically conservative decisions on the High Court, as well as whether the role of institutional factors has gone down. The literature has previously held that institutional factors have a consistent hold on the Court and are some of the best predictors on how the Court will vote cases. However in recent years academics have been increasingly arguing that it based on partisanship and that the ideology …

The Literary Arsenal In Fahrenheit 451: The Second Amendment Case Against Censorship, Kristen M. Boguslawski
The Literary Arsenal In Fahrenheit 451: The Second Amendment Case Against Censorship, Kristen M. Boguslawski
SPARK Symposium Presentations
This paper argues that First Amendment challenges alone are not enough to address the rise of book bans in the United States. As restrictions increasingly limit access to works by minority and LGBTQ plus authors, new constitutional approaches are needed. Using the Law and Literature framework and Fahrenheit 451, the paper proposes applying Second Amendment principles to literature.
It contends that books function as powerful tools that shape thought and protect individuals from harmful ideas and government control. Like firearms, they support self defense, guard against government overreach, and provide personal value. By drawing this comparison, the paper shows that …

Vitriol For The Masses: How The U.S. Government Uses Language Within Propaganda To Influence Citizens’ Opinions On Immigrants, G Smith-Rasmussen
CEG 450 Cultural, Environmental, and Global Studies Capstone
Politicians do not directly express vitriolic words and beliefs; instead, they test the boundaries of what is accepted and slowly push the line until the hate becomes increasingly normalized. The United States government has similar goals in mind when pushing anti-immigration propaganda. The aim is to normalize harmful stereotypes and ideas of what immigrants are, to sway people into supporting their policies. The current immigrant population that is being heavily targeted is Latin immigrants. This paper aims to analyze how harmful the 2024 presidential administrations' language surrounding Latin immigrants is through discourse analysis.

Spanish Conquistadors As God’S Chosen People: The Role Of Biblical Metaphor In Angélico Chávez's Recounting Of Southwest History, Nicholas L. Chavez
International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest
This study presents a critical discourse analysis of Fray Angélico Chávez’s My Penitente Land: Reflections on Spanish New Mexico through a cognitive linguistic lens based on Hawkins’s notion of iconographic reference. A metaphor analysis first identifies Chávez’s framing of New Mexican history as biblical narrative, mapping Old Testament stories, locations, and characters onto Spanish colonial events. The iconographic reference analysis then demonstrates how this metaphor functions discursively: a biblical iconographic frame of reference allows Chávez to create a biblically-based heirarchy which maps onto Spanish–Indigenous relations, positioning Spaniards as a chosen people and implicitly justifying colonial atrocities by aligning Indigenous groups …

Improving Perinatal Outcomes With The Mood Disorder Questionnaire: A Quality Improvement Project To Increase Identification And Referral, Elizabeth R. Bargardo
Improving Perinatal Outcomes With The Mood Disorder Questionnaire: A Quality Improvement Project To Increase Identification And Referral, Elizabeth R. Bargardo
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract
Background: Perinatal mental health is a growing concern, with under identification and lack of access to mental health as contributing factors. Screening tools such as the Mood Disorder Questionnaire are one way to increase identification of patients at risk for bipolar-spectrum disorders and subsequent postpartum psychosis and initiate referrals to appropriate mental health services.
Local Problem: One outpatient women’s health center has a 94% screening rate for the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Score (EPDS) for anxiety and depression but has not implemented a screening for bipolar disorder. In addition, while approximately one in five perinatal patients struggles with a mental …
What Would Mr. Rogers Do? Healing Childhood Trauma Through The Application Of Emergency Pedagogy, Shel Frolich-Tscherne
What Would Mr. Rogers Do? Healing Childhood Trauma Through The Application Of Emergency Pedagogy, Shel Frolich-Tscherne
Doctor of Education
Emergency Pedagogy works to stabilize, both physically and socially, those that have been affected by traumatic events through pedagogical interventions that are based on the concepts of Waldorf education (Ruf, 2013). While techniques and interventions such as Trauma-Informed Care and psychotherapy are more widely known and used to treat individuals who have experienced traumatic events, Emergency Pedagogy is another method to be considered when working with traumatized individuals (Cohen and Mannarino, 2016). Emergency Pedagogy is not therapy but rather pedagogical first aid, seeking to stabilize, both physically and socially, those that have been affected by traumatic events before the wound …

Revising The Nation: Tribal Sovereignty And The American History Textbook, 1929-2002, Grace R. Ellis
Library Map Prize
This thesis examines Indigenous representation in twentieth-century American history textbooks. Chapter One contends that the most popular U.S. history textbook of the late twentieth century, The American Pageant, erased tribal nations from its narrative and its maps. Across twelve editions (1956-2002), The Pageant taught generations of students that “Indians” served only as barriers to building the modern American nation-state. While Indigenous erasure can be traced back to specific passages in The Pageant, erasure can better be understood as an iterative process, both textual and cartographic in nature. Beginning in 1983, The Pageant added new maps that depicted tribes …

This study aimed to assess the relationship between mental health, health behaviors, and food security in young adults in a university environment. Young adults (N = 536) at two United States universities completed a survey assessing health behaviors and characteristics. Logistic regression determined the odds of anxiety and/or depression based on gender identity, body mass index (BMI), food security status (FSS), and sleep restfulness. Over one-third of students were food insecure (36.7%), and almost all reported anxiety (57%) and/or depression (39.1%). Students who identified as female, reported very low FSS, poor sleep, and had higher BMI were at greater odds …
