Campus Climate Perceptions And Developmental Needs Of Non-Monogamous Students In Postsecondary Education, Dayna B. Lewis-Jones Jan 2025

Campus Climate Perceptions And Developmental Needs Of Non-Monogamous Students In Postsecondary Education, Dayna B. Lewis-Jones

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

they identify as necessary. Ten college students who self-identified as non-monogamous participated in semi-structured interviews. Findings show that most were unaware of any campus resources specific to their identities and often felt invisible within student affairs structures. Students described balancing self-acceptance with stigma and highlighted needs such as knowledgeable staff, peer connection, and inclusive spaces. Overall, the study indicates that acceptance strongly influences both climate perception and developmental outcomes. These results point to a gap in higher education practice and emphasize the importance of policies, training, and resources that acknowledge and support non-monogamous students. Keywords: non-monogamy, polyamory, relationships, sexuality, student …

Investigating The Glassmaking Crafts Of Qing Dynasty China In Guangzhou Through Twelve Export Paintings, Zhou Yu, Suffian Mansor, Azlizan Mat Enh

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article explores the glassmaking craft in Guangzhou during the Qing Dynasty, focusing on twelve export paintings collected from the National Library of France. It delves into the detailed processes of glass production in Qing-era Guangzhou, vividly recording the stages from the handling of raw materials to the finished product. The paintings reveal how Guangzhou craftsmen utilized imported semi-processed raw materials, glass shards, for secondary processing to ultimately produce quality flat glass products. The export paintings depict the situation of glassmaking by Guangzhou craftsmen during the Qing Dynasty. This article employs bibliographical and iconographical research methods and a combined approach …

The Local Recording Industry And Chinese Songs In Singapore, 1950s And 1960s, Song Wei Goh Jan 2025

The Local Recording Industry And Chinese Songs In Singapore, 1950s And 1960s, Song Wei Goh

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper argues that the local Chinese recording industry in post-Second World War Singapore functioned as a discursive sphere, which reflected the different understandings between the state and the people about what constituted “local Chinese culture”, during the formative years of the newly independent Singapore. In the 1950s and 1960s, technological advancement and state policies motivated the establishment of numerous local record companies with many singers discovered and recordings produced. Following Singapore’s independence, the local Chinese song recordings were employed by different agencies into narratives of nation-building and portrayed as the formation of “local Chinese culture”. This was notwithstanding the …

Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy Jan 2025

Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper investigates how ai challenges traditional verification, citation, and evaluation principles, thereby eroding truth. ai-generated content, lacking verifiable citations, operates on probabilistic models that present information as probable rather than factual. The widespread reliance on ai for information-seeking risks diminishing critical evaluation, blending fact with fiction, and compromising academic integrity. To explore these effects, a mixed-method study was conducted involving 240 Chulalongkorn University students who used various online resources like Google, Wikipedia, and ChatGPT to research Rudolf Carnap’s verificationism views. Their choices were analyzed to assess dependency patterns on these platforms. Further, a qualitative analysis compared ai-generated responses with …

The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Parenting Behavior, And Parenting Self-Efficacy In African American Families With Low-Income, Maleek Holmes Jan 2025

The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Parenting Behavior, And Parenting Self-Efficacy In African American Families With Low-Income, Maleek Holmes

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Early trauma is linked to adverse adult outcomes, including parenting deficits. While prior research has emphasized specific trauma types and severe parenting deficits, less is known about how cumulative trauma shapes normative parenting behaviors. Parenting self-efficacy (PSE) has been proposed as a potential mechanism linking early adversity to later parenting practices, though under-researched. This study examined the relationships between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), PSE, and positive parenting behaviors in a sample of 56 caregivers of preschool-aged children enrolled in Head Start. PSE was significantly associated with greater use of limit-setting, positive behavior support, and proactive parenting strategies, reinforcing its role …

A Contrastive Analysis Of Passive Markers In Japanese And Thai : Factors Influencing The Use Of The Passive, Kanokwan Laohaburanakit Katagiri, Somkiat Chawengkijwanich

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper analyzes passive markers in Japanese, -(r)are-, and Thai, thùuk/dōon, focusing on factors influencing passive use, a previously underexplored topic. It examines similarities and differences between the languages, noting Japanese’s broad adaptability of passive forms across different verbs, unlike the more constrained use in Thai. The study also highlights unique Japanese factors such as adherence to an animacy hierarchy, self-projection, subject continuity, and intransitive-like functions, contrasted with verb-specific restrictions and conveyance of unique meaning in Thai.

Work And Human Vocation In Catholic Social Teaching, Stefan M. Mcdaniel Jan 2025

Work And Human Vocation In Catholic Social Teaching, Stefan M. Mcdaniel

Saint Louis University Law Journal

This essay explores Catholic social teaching on work, focusing on how labor should enable humans to fulfill their vocation through experiences of dominion and communion. Drawing from papal encyclicals and theological anthropology, it examines how work becomes a means for humans to exercise their God-like faculties by intelligently shaping creation (dominion) and building rich relationships (communion). The essay argues that Catholic teaching offers distinctive contributions to contemporary workplace justice movements through its emphasis on two priorities: promoting worker-ownership and supporting family life. Worker-ownership, especially through cooperatives, enables labor to become an exercise of dominion, while family-centered policies make work a …

Cultivating Thoughtful Dialogue, Shared Humanity, And Emotional Intelligence In Client Counseling Courses, Jacki J. Langum Jan 2025

Cultivating Thoughtful Dialogue, Shared Humanity, And Emotional Intelligence In Client Counseling Courses, Jacki J. Langum

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Historically, client counseling courses in law schools across the country omitted concepts fundamental to a successful attorney-client relationship–thoughtful dialogue, shared humanity, and emotional intelligence. Psychology and the practice of law, including the omitted concepts, are now being integrated into more courses each semester. The essay demonstrates how I integrate them into my own course and work alongside students to help them practice those concepts and the most important skill of active listening. The students’ practice requires thoughtful work around self-awareness, bias, power, and money–topics often neglected because of the discomfort involved in their contemplation and reflection. The earlier students are …

Teaching Client Counseling In The Shadow Of Homelessness, Gregory M. Zlotnick Jan 2025

Teaching Client Counseling In The Shadow Of Homelessness, Gregory M. Zlotnick

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Working with clients at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness teaches personal and professional humility like few other experiences in law school or the practice of law. Yet such sensitive work also provides an opportunity for law students to develop both a keener understanding of their own professional identity—with its capacities and limitations—and critical counseling skills.

This essay draws upon experiences gained in three distinct law school projects that work with clients at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness. After providing a brief overview of each project, the essay will explore methods used for training and supervising students during their counseling sessions, …

Bail-Ing Out Of Cash Bail: Navigating The Pretrial Fairness Act And Illinois’ Cashless Frontier, Sara Worrell Jan 2025

Bail-Ing Out Of Cash Bail: Navigating The Pretrial Fairness Act And Illinois’ Cashless Frontier, Sara Worrell

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Cash bail, once a tool intended to ensure appearances in court, has evolved into a system that disproportionately incarcerates marginalized and economically disadvantaged communities. This national reckoning with the failures of the cash bail system necessiates a critical reevaluation of pretrial justice in the United States. Calls for bail reform have been ringing across the nation and Illinois has answered.

This note critically examines the Pretrial Fairness Act (PFA), a landmark reform in the Illinois SAFE-T Act which abolishes cash bail and restores the presumption of innocence to pretrial detention decisions in Illinois. In response to the systemic inequities of …

Originalism And The Chronological Separation Of Powers, Daniel Kiel Jan 2025

Originalism And The Chronological Separation Of Powers, Daniel Kiel

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Inspired by the 2024 Childress Lecture, this essay considers originalism in two distinct guises: first, as a method of constitutional interpretation and then, as a politically-coded signal used to ensure predictability of judicial behavior. Regarding interpretation, the essay critiques originalism and its claim as a determinative source of constitutional understanding as a violation of the oft-overlooked chronological separation of powers embedded in the Constitution. Though originalism is often styled as a way of checking the power of judges, it threatens to impose a tyranny of the past that runs counter to a constitutional structure built upon the diffusion of power. …

“They Told Us We Were Safe”: An Analysis Of The Constitutionality Of Missouri’S Ban On Gender-Affirming Healthcare For Medicaid Recipients, Tory Davidson Jan 2025

“They Told Us We Were Safe”: An Analysis Of The Constitutionality Of Missouri’S Ban On Gender-Affirming Healthcare For Medicaid Recipients, Tory Davidson

Saint Louis University Law Journal

The current state of gender-affirming care in the United States hangs in a precarious balance. Though the medical community seems to agree that such care is critical in at least some cases, citizens’ perceptions of that necessity are far from unified. As of this publication, at least one case involving a state-sponsored ban on gender-affirming care for minors, United States v. Skrmetti, is pending before the United States Supreme Court. The arguments in that case have centered on whether denying hormonal treatments inconsistent with a child’s assigned sex, when the same treatments may be prescribed when consistent with a …

Profess, Apply, Pickle, And Trash: Four Legal Educators' Approaches To The Law, David Ray Papke Jan 2025

Profess, Apply, Pickle, And Trash: Four Legal Educators' Approaches To The Law, David Ray Papke

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Outsiders might assume that law professors at a given school teach their students all of the laws. But alas, an undertaking of that sort would be impossible. The laws are simply too numerous and variable to be presented in full. What law professors can and do convey, meanwhile, are approaches to the selected laws they might be teaching. After graduation from law school, many lawyers will hold onto and use their professors’ approaches for the rest of their professional lives.

A Comparative Analysis Of Third-Party Litigation Funding In The United States And The United Kingdom, Gary Myers Jan 2025

A Comparative Analysis Of Third-Party Litigation Funding In The United States And The United Kingdom, Gary Myers

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Third-Party Litigation Funding (“TPLF”), which is also known as litigation finance, involves a financial arrangement in which a third party provides funding to support the plaintiff’s pursuit of a civil lawsuit. The third party, in return, receives a portion of the proceeds if the litigation is successful. Like a contingent-fee agreement, this type of funding model enables a party to bring a lawsuit even if that party does not have the resources to pay the up-front costs of the litigation. The important difference is that the litigation funder is not counsel to a party in the case, and that TPLF …

Strengthening The Right To Accessible Web Sites For Consumers With Disabilities Through The Development Of A Clear Test For The Nexus Rule Under Title Iii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jonathan Lazar Jan 2025

Strengthening The Right To Accessible Web Sites For Consumers With Disabilities Through The Development Of A Clear Test For The Nexus Rule Under Title Iii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jonathan Lazar

Loyola Consumer Law Review

Currently, most of the U.S. Federal disability rights laws expressly require accessible websites for people with disabilities, either in the statute or the regulation. There is one major exception: for websites of public accommodations under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the scope of accessibility coverage is determined by a combination of case law and agency interpretations, rather than expressly in the statute or regulations. To make it more complex, there is a three-way circuit split as to whether websites of public accommodations covered under Title III are required to have accessible websites. The predominant view in the …

Influence Of Alloy Composition On The Process Robustness Of Steels Consolidated Via Laser-Directed Energy Deposition, Jonathan Kelley Jan 2025

Influence Of Alloy Composition On The Process Robustness Of Steels Consolidated Via Laser-Directed Energy Deposition, Jonathan Kelley

Masters Theses

"To ensure consistent quality of additively manufactured parts, it is advantageous to identify alloys which can meet performance criteria while being robust to process variations. Toward this end, this work investigated the effect of alloy composition on the robustness of steels consolidated via laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED). Ultra-high-strength low-alloy steel (UHSLA) and pure iron powders were mixed in-situ to produce 10 compositions containing 10-100% UHSLA by mass. JMatPro material simulations roughly predicted phases and mechanical properties. Two sets of experiments were used to evaluate the sensitivity of as-built hardness (all 10 compositions) and tensile properties (5 select compositions) to process …

Telling Their Story: A Proposed Social Group For Autistic Teenagers, Bailey Hull Jan 2025

Telling Their Story: A Proposed Social Group For Autistic Teenagers, Bailey Hull

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Typically developing adolescents go through many transitions and learning experiences from ages 13 to 18. Autistic adolescents also develop through these transitions and learning experiences. This unique group of adolescents can have a much more difficult time with these involvements, however, due to societal standards, learning, and growing within a neurodivergent mindset. As social isolation, bullying, and a lack of friendship opportunities continue to persist within the neurodivergent adolescent community, the lack of appropriate, affirming interventions must be addressed. This doctoral specialization project aims to provide licensed and student-level clinicians with a treatment manual to guide them through a social …

This project examined the potential application of cultural additions to various aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This project is specifically focused on cultural adaptations of ACT for the Appalachian population. The ACT adaptations were devised based on a review of research on Appalachian culture, including the region’s geography, history of exploitation, cultural values, and clinical considerations for working with Appalachian populations. An overview of ACT and treatment effectiveness of ACT is included. It is important to note that this project is intended to be a supplement to ACT, and should be used in tandem with an ACT workbook …

understanding of the effects of poverty for audience members

and the larger community. This paper reports the findings of the

evaluation, which indicate that the objectives were met in several

ways: 1) the co-creators felt uplifted …

Using Big Data To Dismantle Systemic Barriers: How Tracking Official Misconduct Can Foster Justice And Increase Accountability In The Criminal Legal System, Meagan R. Hurley

Articles

The U.S. criminal legal system is a vast and complex machine, long subject to public and scholarly scrutiny. The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other nation, holding an astonishing 1.9 million individuals behind bars. Of them, approximately eighty percent are indigent, and over sixty percent are racial minorities, despite these groups comprising a relatively small portion of the overall population. In this expansive system, which disproportionately targets minorities and the poor, it is unsurprising that justice is not always served: Human error and bias are nearly guaranteed to occur at some juncture. Experts estimate that about four percent of …

Nextgen Bar Success: A Student-Tested, Student-Approved Method For Completing Counseling Integrated Question Sets, Kari Milligan

Faculty Scholarship

Legal educators nationwide need to begin teaching students a method for completing Counseling Integrated Question Sets, a novel type of question the National Conference of Bar Examiners (“NCBE”) is introducing on the NextGen bar exam. Counseling Integrated Question Sets require students to answer a series of six multiple choice or short answer questions focused on client counseling or dispute resolution, as they work through an unfolding common fact pattern that also contains rules or elicits rules students have memorized.

Students who matriculated to law school in 2023 will need to answer Counseling Integrated Question Sets in order to obtain their …
