Long Covid And Vulnerability To Climate Change’S Health Effects: An Informational Booklet For Healthcare Settings, Rachel Nussbaum Jan 2025

Long Covid And Vulnerability To Climate Change’S Health Effects: An Informational Booklet For Healthcare Settings, Rachel Nussbaum

Public Health Theses

According to the World Health Organization, around 10–20% of people infected by COVID-19 may go on to develop symptoms that can be diagnosed as Long COVID, also known as the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). While the risk of Long Covid among people who received the primary vaccine series fell to 3.5% in one study, as of September 2024, over 1.3 million Americans were being infected with SARS-CoV-2 every day, and reinfections increase the likelihood of experiencing Long Covid in some studies. Continued transmission of SARS-CoV-2 has led to roughly 400 million people experiencing infection-associated chronic conditions, creating an accumulating …

Design Of Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Single Cantilever Beam For Iot Applications And Micro-Electronic Devices, Ramizi Mohamed, Amna Riaz, Mahidur R. Sarker, José Luis Olazagoitia

Artículos científicos

A few years back the power requirement of electronic devices was very high. But with the technological developments in the field of internet-based systems, the design of low-powered microelectronic devices, WSN and IoT devices became necessary. In these systems the size and the power requirement are low and in most situations the replacement of batteries is challenging. For these microelectronic and IoT devices the abundant energy harvester is very useful. Among different abundant energy resources, vibrational energy harvesting with piezoelectric cantilever beam energy harvesters is of interest. This research work presents the design and analysis of an energy harvester (EH) …

The Role Of Climate Change In The Pandemic Agreement Negotiations, Cristina Arnes Sanz

Public Health Theses

Introduction: For over three years, Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) have been negotiating a treaty to prevent, prepare for, and respond to future pandemics. The Pandemic Agreement is anticipated to be adopted at the World Health Assembly in May 2025. Growing scientific evidence underscores the effects of climate change on infectious diseases, including those that could lead to pandemics. This thesis examines how climate change has been addressed in the drafting and negotiations of the Pandemic Agreement.

Methods: All the references related to climate change in the transcripts of the publicly broadcast Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) meetings …

INTRODUCTION

Evidence points to dysregulated Ca2+ in neurons and astrocytes in models of amyloidosis. While most of these data were obtained in vitro or in vivo under anesthesia, less work has investigated these variables in awake ambulating mice.

METHODS

Astrocytic Ca2+ fluctuations (GCaMP8f) were imaged concomitantly with vasoreactivity in S1 on a two-photon microscope during rest and ambulation. Single-cell resolution variables were extracted using continuous wavelet transform and traditional ΔF/F measures.

RESULTS

Along with increases in amyloid beta (Aβ) accumulation, we found significant reductions in measures of astrocyte functional connectivity, pairwise correlations, and network synchronicity in older 5×FAD …

Impact Of Constant Versus Variable Inclusions Of Modified Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Feedlot Cattle Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Paige M. Madison, Rebecca L. Mcdermott, Isaque F. Vicci, Joshua R. Benton, James C. Macdonald, Galen E. Erickson Jan 2025

Impact Of Constant Versus Variable Inclusions Of Modified Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Feedlot Cattle Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Paige M. Madison, Rebecca L. Mcdermott, Isaque F. Vicci, Joshua R. Benton, James C. Macdonald, Galen E. Erickson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Summary with Implications

A finishing trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of varying dietary inclusion of modified distillers grains plus solubles compared to a constant inclusion throughout the entire feeding period on finishing cattle performance. Treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial with two inclusions of modified distillers grains plus solubles (10% and 25%) that were constant or varying in dietary inclusion, and a corn control (0% modified distillers grains plus solubles). Increasing the inclusion of distillers grains from 0 to 25% increased both DMI and ADG when fed at a constant inclusion of 10 …

Layers Of Identity, Elizabeth Toffel Jan 2025

Layers Of Identity, Elizabeth Toffel

Teaching Resource Archive

Students explore identity, specifically that identity is layered, shaped by personal experience, cultural background, community ties, and unique traits. Students conduct interviews with peers, reflect on identity components, both individually and collectively, and create a layer artwork on transparent acetate sheets. When stacked the layers visually showcase the layers of the student’s identity and represent how identity is complex, constructed, and always shaped by multiple influences.

Decentral Intelligence Agency: The Law And Autonomous Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Andrew W. Torrance , Ph. D., Dr. Bill Tomlinson , Ph.D.

Touro Law Review

Artificial intelligence (“AI”) is rapidly gaining autonomy across a range of domains, such as business, education, social relationships, and warfare. This article examines the legal and policy implications of autonomous AI agents, a rapidly evolving technology that challenges existing regulatory frameworks. Drawing from tort, agency, property, contract, privacy, human rights, and constitutional law, we propose a comprehensive approach to govern these increasingly independent entities. Our analysis begins with a historical perspective, tracing both the evolution of autonomous computational systems and of legal responses to such technologies. We then conduct a comparative study of AI governance across jurisdictions, highlighting regulatory gaps …

A Framework For Ai Implementation In Construction: Use Cases, Challenges, And Benefits For Contractors, Jaqueline De Aquino Leite Gomes

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The construction industry is one of the most important sectors that contribute to the economy worldwide, but it has been very slow in adopting digital transformation. Artificial Intelligence is the backbone of digital innovation, and it can help solve inefficiencies, improve safety, and enhance decision-making in construction. This thesis reviews 85 academic papers, identifies 354 AI use-cases, 180 benefits, and 173 challenges. Key findings have looked at the role of AI in safety monitoring, design optimization, and operational efficiency, while barriers involve data scarcity, high costs, and readiness of the workforce.

All of these challenges have one very handy framework …

Can Prior Censorship Be A Necessary Tool For The Protection Of Human Rights?, Leandro Leo Rebelo Jan 2025

Can Prior Censorship Be A Necessary Tool For The Protection Of Human Rights?, Leandro Leo Rebelo

American University International Law Review

Prior censorship is unequivocally interpreted by the Inter-American Human Rights System (“Inter-American System”) as a step too far in moderating expression. Except in the quite narrow circumstances allowed for under Article 13(4) of the American Convention on Human Rights (“ACHR”), the Inter-American System has reiterated that prior censorship is forbidden. However, prior censorship is widely used in social media platforms as a tool of content moderation. Should such techniques be banned, or should more exceptions be allowed in the regulation of speech?

Soil Aggregation, Aggregate Stability, And Associated Soil Organic Carbon In Huron Mountains Forests, Michigan, Usa, Xiaoyong Chen, Timothy Gsell, John A. Yunger, Lynda Randa, Yuanying Peng, Mary E. Carrington Jan 2025

Soil Aggregation, Aggregate Stability, And Associated Soil Organic Carbon In Huron Mountains Forests, Michigan, Usa, Xiaoyong Chen, Timothy Gsell, John A. Yunger, Lynda Randa, Yuanying Peng, Mary E. Carrington

Faculty Authors and Creators Reception

Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a critical role in regulating the global carbon (C) cycle, with forest soils serving as significant C sinks. Soil aggregate stability and the distribution of SOC in different aggregate fractions would be affected by different forest types. In this study, we investigate the distribution and dynamics of SOC within different soil aggregate fractions across three main forest types in the Huron Mountains, Michigan, USA: white birch–eastern hemlock mixed forest, eastern-hemlock-dominated forest, and sugar maple forest. We hypothesize that variations in species composition and soil depth influence SOC storage and aggregate stability through mechanisms such as …

Taming The Kangaroos, Matt Garcia Jan 2025

Taming The Kangaroos, Matt Garcia

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Low-level state courts frequently disregard federal law. And though the judgments of these courts have profound legal consequence for millions of Americans, they receive little oversight. Rather than bastions of justice, low-level state courts are too often sites of lawlessness, earning them the shameful label “kangaroo courts.” This article proposes a path forward by which advocates can curb that lawlessness and enforce critically important federal protections.

As part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a broad legislative effort to protect the national economy and public health infrastructure, Congress altered mandatory procedures in eviction suits. Evictions …

Attachment And Delusional Ideation: A Systematic Review And Proposed Model Of The Association Between Attachment Insecurity And Delusion Symptoms, Ryan Sparks M.S. Jan 2025

Attachment And Delusional Ideation: A Systematic Review And Proposed Model Of The Association Between Attachment Insecurity And Delusion Symptoms, Ryan Sparks M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Early repeated child-parent experiences impact the emergence of children’s reality testing by providing them with secure, trusting relationships with reality-oriented caregivers in which beliefs can be evaluated and refined. These relationships facilitate open and reciprocal communication about thoughts and feelings. Caregivers facilitate the development of children’s reflective capacities by helping them connect their inner experiences to their behavior. This process encourages them to assess whether their thoughts and feelings accurately reflect reality by remaining attuned to the perceptions of reality that are shared with others. Given the centrality of early caregiving experiences to one’s development of reality testing, attachment theory …

Cronyism In Creating Chronic Disease—A Path To Food Justice, Martha Leonard Jan 2025

Cronyism In Creating Chronic Disease—A Path To Food Justice, Martha Leonard

St. Thomas Law Review

Central to this discussion is a quote often attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates: “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Today, physicians recognize the crucial role of diet in maintaining good health and preventing chronic disease, but U.S. laws fail to reflect this understanding. The health field has seen significant progress in scientific research on pathology; however, nutritional research presents a challenging and contradictory landscape. Corporate influence in scientific research leads to a lack of consensus on the most optimal diet for promoting general health, presenting a challenge for policymaking. The dark reality is that …

The New World's Pandemic: Sexual Exploitation In The Digital Age, Rocio Iglesias Gonzalez Jan 2025

The New World's Pandemic: Sexual Exploitation In The Digital Age, Rocio Iglesias Gonzalez

St. Thomas Law Review

Mary is a fifteen-year-old who is excited about starting her sophomore year of high school. Unbeknownst to Mary, George, a classmate whose romantic advances Mary had rejected, created a sexually explicit image generated by artificial intelligence, most commonly known as a deepfake, of Mary and started sending it to other classmates. Once Mary discovered the deepfaked pictures, she and her parents sought legal advice on available remedies. Unfortunately, Mary lives in Nevada, a state that has no legislation addressing the issue of nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes. Similarly, at the federal level, Mary has no course of action against her offender. …

Pressing Charges: Criminal Fees And The Excessive Fines Clause, Annemarie Foy Jan 2025

Pressing Charges: Criminal Fees And The Excessive Fines Clause, Annemarie Foy

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Millions of people owe money to the government as a consequence of a criminal charge. But while some of that debt is tied to fines or restitution, much of it is levied as fees, or payments owed to the government for the administration of a defendant’s criminal proceedings. Criminal fees can include costs assessed for pretrial detention, a public defender, a jury, a court appearance, filing a document, electronic monitoring, and more. They are assessed at every stage of a criminal case and for all types of offenses. While state and local governments claim that criminal fees are necessary to …

Solving The Proxy Advisory Problem: Minimum Regulation For Maximum Competition, Dominic P. Keilty Jan 2025

Solving The Proxy Advisory Problem: Minimum Regulation For Maximum Competition, Dominic P. Keilty

Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review

The proxy advisory industry is often criticized on two primary accounts: the lack of accountability for informational accuracy in the development of voting standards and the conflicts of interest faced by advisors when they make proxy voting recommendations on issuers to which they have previously provided corporate governance consulting services. The industry has also been accused of having “anemic” levels of competition, since only two advisors command a vast majority of the market share. While much has been written about curtailing the prevalence and effects of proxy advisor conflicts of interest through increased regulation, the regulatory route toward increased informational …

Major-Questions Lenity, Joel S. Johnson Jan 2025

Major-Questions Lenity, Joel S. Johnson

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Both the historic rule of lenity and the new major questions doctrine rest on a fundamental commitment to the separation of powers for important policy questions. In light of that shared justification, the logic of the major questions doctrine in the administrative-law context has much to offer lenity in the criminal law context. In fact, the major-questions framework is strikingly similar to a rationale that has recently emerged in some of the Supreme Court's decisions narrowly construing federal penal statutes. That emerging rationale can be understood as a modest form of major-questions lenity that may lead to a more robust …
