Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Significance:

Trypanosoma brucei is a single-cell parasite causing sleeping sickness across 37 sub-Saharan countries, threatening ~60 million people. Revealing its locomotion mechanism is critical to understand its lifecycle in fly vectors and mammalian hosts; however, progress has been hindered by the rapid and complex cell deformation driven by a laterally attached flagellum. By tracking the 3D motion of fluorescent particles attached to cell surface, we demonstrate that tip-to-base helical waves generate self-propulsion like an active corkscrew, with reactive torque inducing counterrotation of the cell body. These findings inform future investigations of the underlying biomechanics, suggest potential routes for therapeutic intervention, …

Skill Acquisition: Evaluation Of Instructional Procedures, Ellen I. Ratliff Jun 2026

Skill Acquisition: Evaluation Of Instructional Procedures, Ellen I. Ratliff

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Identifying effective and efficient interventions is essential for establishing independent responding in learners with autism spectrum disorder and related developmental disabilities. The present study replicated and extended Gorgan and Kodak (2019) by comparing differential reinforcement, most-to-least prompt fading, and extended response interval procedures for teaching novel skills to three children with autism spectrum disorder who did not demonstrate prompt-dependent responding. Using an adapted alternating treatments design, each intervention was evaluated against a control condition with an equated opportunity interval. Extensions to prior research included conducting a reinforcer assessment to verify differentiation in stimulus potency, modifying the controlling prompt assessment to …

The Way Perceived Justice Affects Environmental Policy Support, Cholnapa Anukul, Kanang Kantamaturapoj Jun 2026

The Way Perceived Justice Affects Environmental Policy Support, Cholnapa Anukul, Kanang Kantamaturapoj

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Perceptions of justice have been widely discussed as an important lens through which individuals interpret social experiences and evaluate public policies. This exploratory qualitative study examines how perceived justice, particularly Belief in a Just World (BJW), is associated with attitudes toward support for environmental policy among undergraduate students aged 18 years or older recruited from higher education institutions (HEIs) in Bangkok, Thailand. An online screening survey was used to identify students with relatively high and low levels of Personal Belief in a Just World (PBJW) from four HEIs, followed by in-depth interviews with 21 participants. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed …

Concealed History Of Microplastic Pollution In The Msimbazi Estuary, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Dativa J. Shilla Jun 2026

Concealed History Of Microplastic Pollution In The Msimbazi Estuary, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Dativa J. Shilla

Tanzania Journal of Science

This study reconstructed the historical deposition of microplastics in sediments of the Msimbazi Estuary, Tanzania, using a radiometrically dated sediment core. Sediment chronology established using ²¹⁰Pb and the Constant Initial Concentration (CIC) model provided an approximately 83-year depositional record. The ²¹⁰Pb age model suggested marked temporal variability in sedimentation rates, with peaks around 1961, 1998, 2013, and 2015, potentially reflecting hydrological extremes and catchment disturbances. Anthropogenic microparticles were detected throughout most of the sediment core, with concentrations ranging from below detection limit (BDL) to 34 items kg⁻¹ dry weight (mean 8.5 ± 3.2 items kg⁻¹), and their abundance generally increased …

Linear Programming Model For Optimal Crop Allocation Under Varying Land Sizes In Pawaga, Tanzania, Mustapha Abbas Kiswanya, Seleman Ismail, Saul Mpeshe Jun 2026

Linear Programming Model For Optimal Crop Allocation Under Varying Land Sizes In Pawaga, Tanzania, Mustapha Abbas Kiswanya, Seleman Ismail, Saul Mpeshe

Tanzania Journal of Science

Farmers often rely on intuition when selecting crops, which can lead to suboptimal profits. In this study, we examine the optimal annual crop allocation under varying land sizes for farmers in Pawaga, Iringa District, Tanzania. A parametric linear programming (LP) model is developed to determine crop allocation combinations that maximise profit subject to land, labour, and capital constraints. Unlike conventional approaches that require separate models for different farm sizes, the proposed model accommodates land holdings ranging from 1 to 9 acres and integrates nine crop types within a single framework. Data were collected over three (3) agricultural seasons from extension …

Joint Channel And Phase Noise Estimation For Mmwave Ofdm Systems Using Adaptive Kalman Filtering, Kwame Salum Ibwe Jun 2026

Joint Channel And Phase Noise Estimation For Mmwave Ofdm Systems Using Adaptive Kalman Filtering, Kwame Salum Ibwe

Tanzania Journal of Science

This manuscript presents a joint channel and phase-noise estimation framework for millimeter-wave (mmWave) OFDM systems based on an adaptive extended Kalman filter (EKF). The proposed method formulates a unified state-space model that simultaneously tracks time-varying multipath channels and oscillator phase noise, a critical impairment in 5G NR frequency range 2 (FR2) and emerging 6G transceivers. An innovation-based covariance adaptation mechanism is introduced to enhance estimation accuracy while maintaining computational efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves up to a 5 dB SNR gain at a target BER of 10⁻³, maintains NMSE below 10⁻³ for linewidths up to 200 …

“The Ai Pushed Me To Consider New Perspectives”: Preliminary Observations On A Chatgpt Intervention Designed To Elicit Critical Thinking About Media Headlines, Karina Luna, Chelsea Julian Reynolds, Ali Zain Jun 2026

“The Ai Pushed Me To Consider New Perspectives”: Preliminary Observations On A Chatgpt Intervention Designed To Elicit Critical Thinking About Media Headlines, Karina Luna, Chelsea Julian Reynolds, Ali Zain

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

This study explored whether a custom AI chatbot could be a relevant tool for promoting critical thinking about news bias. The research team discusses the development of a custom critical media literacy chatbot and its implementation in an upper-division critical media studies course at a large North American public university. Students interacted with the chatbot to analyze news headlines about transgender issues, employing a scaffolded framework to dissect media framing and generate alternative frames. We argue that the same AI technologies fueling anxiety can be reimagined as partners in cultivating critical media literacy and guiding future directions in journalism pedagogy. …
