Letters From A Fragmented Democracy, Maureen Edobor Jan 2025

Letters From A Fragmented Democracy, Maureen Edobor

Scholarly Articles

This piece confronts the stakes of our current trajectory by looking to the future. It presents six fictional letters to illustrate where today’s ominous currents could lead. In this imagined tomorrow, contemporary voting restrictions, judicial erosion, and administrative manipulation have gradually hollowed out the franchise, transforming formal democracy into little more than an empty spectacle. Each letter voices a different facet of democratic erosion: a voter disenfranchised by bureaucratic hurdles, a candidate’s voice hijacked by deepfake technology, a neighbor ensnared by punitive voting laws, a community erased by gerrymandering, a campaign drowned in dark money, and even a corporate memo …

Shaping Strategy In The Digital Age: The Impact Of Consumer Electronic Word Of Mouth On Firm Strategic Emphasis, Brandon Holle, Hang T. Nguyen, Hieu V. Phan Jan 2025

Shaping Strategy In The Digital Age: The Impact Of Consumer Electronic Word Of Mouth On Firm Strategic Emphasis, Brandon Holle, Hang T. Nguyen, Hieu V. Phan

Faculty Scholarship

This research explores how consumer electronic word of mouth (eWOM) influences a firm’s strategic emphasis, focusing on the distinct effects of positive and negative eWOM on value appropriation (e.g., advertising) versus value creation (e.g., R&D). Analyzing over 33 million social media posts covering 39 corporate brands from 2010 to 2020, the authors find that positive consumer eWOM influences firms to prioritize a strategic emphasis on value appropriation, while negative consumer eWOM is associated with a strategic emphasis on value creation. These effects are moderated by product category, market competition, and industry instability. Firms in hedonic categories have attenuated responses to …

Cristina "La Veneno" Ortiz: A Transgender Icon Of Spain And The Fight For Transgender Rights, Hannah Flockton

Undergraduate Review

Although Spain has taken steps to protect transgender people at a policy level, transgender individuals continue to face systemic victimization and unequal access to fundamental human rights. Historically, they have been absent, misgendered, or reduced to negative stereotypes in the film, music, and television industries. Nevertheless, over the last ten years, and in response to the growing transphobic rhetoric and hate prevalent worldwide, numerous transgender women artists and allies have created or participated in artistic projects that not only challenge these stereotypes but also provide new and more inclusive representations and definitions of “women” and “feminine.” One of those artistic …

Multiobjective Optimal Design Of Hierarchical Control Architectures For Quadcopter Systems: Linear And Hybrid Approaches, Xinhuang Wu Jan 2025

Multiobjective Optimal Design Of Hierarchical Control Architectures For Quadcopter Systems: Linear And Hybrid Approaches, Xinhuang Wu

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis investigates the design of many-objective optimal controllers for quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), focusing on both linear and hybrid control structures. In Chapter 2, a multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) optimal control system is developed for a six-degree-of-freedom UAV actuated by four brushless DC motors. The UAV dynamics are first derived and linearized around an operating point, and then organized into a three-loop nested control structure. The outer loop computes the roll and pitch angles required to maneuver the vehicle in the global X and Y directions, the middle loop regulates attitude and altitude, and the inner loop controls the angular …

Effortful Emotion Regulation Strategy Use And Cognition: An Individual Differences Approach, Christopher John Schmank Jan 2025

Effortful Emotion Regulation Strategy Use And Cognition: An Individual Differences Approach, Christopher John Schmank

CGU Theses & Dissertations

As we age, several cognitive abilities decline, yet the ability to regulate emotions remains stable (or improves) even when the emotion regulation strategy required is mentally effortful (i.e., requires cognitive resources for success). The primary aim of this dissertation was to examine how expressive suppression (i.e., the inhibition of emotional responses and behavior) impacts cognitive processing speed following a sadness induction procedure. Groups of younger (participants between 18 – 29 years of age) and older (participants over 60 years of age) adults completed three measures of processing speed, first following a no-regulation control condition. The control condition began with participants …

Threading The Needle: Teaching Critical Reading And Writing In The Age Of Ai, Emily A. Durham, Andrea A. Berta Jan 2025

Threading The Needle: Teaching Critical Reading And Writing In The Age Of Ai, Emily A. Durham, Andrea A. Berta

Humanities

All instructors--but particularly instructors who must teach students specific disciplinary ways of reading and writing--face a difficult position with AI. Students will need to use AI in collegiate and professional writing, but using AI for assignments can hinder critical thinking skills crucial to analyzing and correcting AI output. This presentation demonstrates three practices from our developmental English classrooms: a critical reading and writing summary assignment, AI-resistant rubrics, and an exercise to help students evaluate AI-generated suggestions on how to review their work. These activities are designed to help students develop crucial AI-literacy skills to help them succeed in an increasingly …

Implementation Of The Nurse-Driven Palliative Care Referral Protocol: A Quality Improvement Project, Khrystyna Lacombe Jan 2025

Implementation Of The Nurse-Driven Palliative Care Referral Protocol: A Quality Improvement Project, Khrystyna Lacombe

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Implementation of the Nurse-Driven Palliative Care Referral Protocol

Background and Purpose: Palliative care enhances quality of life, symptom management, and patient–family communication for individuals with serious illness. Despite strong evidence and national recommendations for early integration, referrals remain inconsistent and often occur late. At Advocate Sherman Hospital, only 17.9% of eligible oncology inpatients received palliative care consults. The absence of standardized referral criteria, reliance on provider discretion, and misconceptions equating palliative care with hospice contributed to delayed or missed consults. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to increase palliative care referrals by 20% within eight weeks through …

Transition Metal Alkoxide Complexes Synthesis Using Thallium Reagents And Design Of Iron(Ii)-Alkoxide Carbene Complexes And Their Reactivity, Lakshani Wathsala Kulathungage

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACTTRANSITION METAL ALKOXIDE COMPLEXES SYNTHESIS USING THALLIUM REAGENTS AND DESIGN OF IRON(II)-ALKOXIDE CARBENE COMPLEXES AND THEIR REACTIVITY by LAKSHANI WATHSALA KULATHUNGAGE May 2025 Advisor: Dr. Stanislav Groysman Major: Chemistry (Inorganic) Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

This dissertation focuses on the synthesis and reactivity of transition metal and main group metal alkoxide complexes. The dissertation began with exploring a novel, efficient synthetic route towards transition metal alkoxides involving thallium reagents. A novel dimeric Tl2(OCtBu2Ph)2 complex was synthesized in the reaction between a lithium alkoxide and thallium precursor TlPF6. Tl2(OCtBu2Ph)2 served as a convenient precursor to the formation of old and new transition …

An Auto-Historia-Teoria Of Kismet Encounters: Building Bridges Between Multiple-Marginalized Identites - Queer, Latine, And Disabled - In A Colonial Education System, Rachel Torres Jan 2025

An Auto-Historia-Teoria Of Kismet Encounters: Building Bridges Between Multiple-Marginalized Identites - Queer, Latine, And Disabled - In A Colonial Education System, Rachel Torres

Wayne State University Dissertations

Existing education research has identified a series of factors that impact student identity formation, belonging, and academic performance in secondary and post-secondary education. Such research usually focuses on one to two identity groups - like ethnicity and gender or sexuality and disability. However, very few center on the experiences of queer, disabled, students of color. Using a decolonial methodological approach to qualitative research. This dissertation uses Chicana/Indigenous epistemologies as research methodologies to identify challenges students of multiple marginalized identities encounter in schooling and how they might find strength in their elders and cultural stories. The findings encourage educators to normalize …

Revisiting The Anti White-Slavery Novel In The Age Of Amber Alerts: Elizabeth Robins' "My Little Sister", Joanne E. Gates Jan 2025

Revisiting The Anti White-Slavery Novel In The Age Of Amber Alerts: Elizabeth Robins' "My Little Sister", Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

The opportunity to teach the Elizabeth Robins novel of 1913, My Little Sister, provided an opportunity to examine advocacy fiction in a more thorough way than I outlined in my 1994 biography of Robins. I detail the genesis of the novel and credit the associations Robins had with William T. Stead and John Masefield. Equally important is the way Robins' network of suffrage advocates elevated the topic of White Slavery and child abduction. I note the afterlife of the novel in attempts by Robins to get a stage version produced. Although this paper is dated to cultural references of …

The Bad And The Beautiful: Is It Moral To Patronize Immoral Artists’ Works?, Earl W. Spurgin Jan 2025

The Bad And The Beautiful: Is It Moral To Patronize Immoral Artists’ Works?, Earl W. Spurgin

2025 Faculty Bibliography

Artists’ moral wrongs raise interesting questions about whether, and how, we should engage the artists and their works. Public discourse is replete with opposition to honoring immoral artists for their achievements and calls for boycotts of their works. I examine a specific moral question that artists’ moral wrongs raise: Is it morally permissible to patronize immoral artists’ works? After explaining some preliminary matters, such as the meanings of some of important terms, I argue that it is morally permissible to patronize immoral artists’ works. Then, I examine two possible objections that pose significant challenges to my argument.

Centering Sisterhood: An Exploration Of Black Mothers’ Wellness Experiences Through A Group Therapy Intervention, Kimberly Stokes Jan 2025

Centering Sisterhood: An Exploration Of Black Mothers’ Wellness Experiences Through A Group Therapy Intervention, Kimberly Stokes

Wayne State University Dissertations

The brilliance of Black mothers has centered their community’s progression and perseverance for centuries. Yet, most of the psychological research is either absent or promotes a deficit-framing of their experiences. In the present study, I use critical qualitative methodology to center the wellness experiences of Black mothers through analyzing a group therapy intervention entitled, Invincible Black Women. I aimed to promote strength-based, holistic research and practice for Black mothers. The research questions guiding this study focused on group participants’ definitions and applications of care practices as well as the role of mothering as explained in group therapy sessions. Sessions were …

Poverty, Fresh Starts, And The Social Safety Net, Michelle Lyon Drumbl Jan 2025

Poverty, Fresh Starts, And The Social Safety Net, Michelle Lyon Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

For decades low-income families have relied on the filing of individual income tax returns to claim critical social welfare benefits in the form of refundable tax credits, most notably the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. But what happens to those families when the social safety net is not enough to meet their financial obligations, and they must seek a fresh start by filing for bankruptcy?

This Article, at the intersection of tax law, bankruptcy law, and the social safety net, examines the ways in which state bankruptcy laws treat refundable tax credits when an individual debtor …
