Introduction: Pregnant women are considered a high-risk group for COVID-19 infection/pneumonia as they are known to be more vulnerable to viral infections. They require close monitoring and appropriate timely intervention to minimize the impact on both the mother and the fetus. Although the more prevalent Omicron variant led to fewer severe infections and fewer intensive care unit (ICU) admissions globally during the third wave, the effect on pregnant women and pregnancy outcomes was unknown. The vaccination campaign was thoroughly established by the third wave of the pandemic in Qatar. This retrospective descriptive cohort study investigates the characteristics, hospital stay, interventions, …

Simulation-Based Models For Postearthquake Response: A Survey And Research Directions, Abhijit Gosavi, Lauryn A. Spearing, Lesley H. Sneed
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Computer simulation is increasingly being used by emergency planners as a tool to improve disaster response given that it can model real-world scenarios, such as earthquakes. Although there has been an increase in simulation research focused on disaster response, much of this literature is from disparate fields and across disaster scenarios. To bridge this gap, this paper surveys simulation-based models for post-earthquake response from the year 2000 onward. Advantages of simulation over closed-form statistical models are discussed. Three main subproblems in post-earthquake response models are explored: (1) service distribution (e.g., food, water), (2) infrastructure restoration (at the building and transportation …
Protecting Minnesota's Whistleblowers: Ending The Application Of Mcdonnell Douglas To The Minnesota Whistleblower Act, Eddie C. Brody
Protecting Minnesota's Whistleblowers: Ending The Application Of Mcdonnell Douglas To The Minnesota Whistleblower Act, Eddie C. Brody
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Whistleblowers are critical to society, speaking out to protect the public from corporate and government wrongdoing. Employers often retaliate against employees who speak out, attempting to deter employees from blowing the whistle. Whistleblower protection statutes seek to protect those who suffer from retaliation, providing a judicial remedy for whistleblowers. The Minnesota Whistleblower Act affords these protections in Minnesota and allows whistleblowers to bring claims against their employers for retaliation. In Minnesota, whistleblowers are held to a higher, more challenging standard than whistleblowers in other states. Minnesota state courts apply a federal standard at summary judgment, creating an undue barrier for …

Dissecting The Frog: How A Meme Explains The Westlaw/Lexis And Generational Divide, Sam Williams
Dissecting The Frog: How A Meme Explains The Westlaw/Lexis And Generational Divide, Sam Williams
SMU Law Review Forum
One of the most controversial elements of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris was a drag show during the opening ceremony that allegedly parodied Christianity by recreating Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. A legal meme emerged showing both images side by side, labeling da Vinci’s painting “Westlaw” and the drag show “Lexis.” In this article, I explain why this meme is funny by showing how the differences between Westlaw and Lexis+, and legal minds’ attitudes towards those differences, offer fascinating parallels to this controversy. Westlaw’s print-focused, grid-oriented organization and aesthetic might appeal to the trained legal mind, but …

Unveiling The Nature Of Peer Development Groups: A Systematic Review, Conceptual Framework, And Research Pathways, Roman Terekhin, S. R. Aurora
Management Faculty Publications
This research provides a systematic review of the literature on peer development groups (PDGs), a promising yet underexplored tool for individual and leadership development. Despite the growing interest in PDGs from both scholars and practitioners, the field remains fragmented, with inconsistent terminologies and limited theoretical grounding. This review seeks to clarify the core components, boundary conditions, inputs, processes, and outcomes of effective PDGs in professional settings, addressing the confusion and gaps in existing research. By adopting an adjudication approach, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence regarding the defining characteristics of PDGs and their impacts on individual development. We …

Nrf2/Cyclooxygenase 2 Signaling In Cr(Vi)-Induced Carcinogenesis, Lei Zhao, Yi-Fang Wang, Andrea Adamcakova-Dodd, Peter Thorne, Ranakul Islam, Ke Jian Liu, Fei Chen, Jia Luo, Ling-Zhi Liu
Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
Long-term exposure to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] has been linked to lung cancer, and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is a well-known inflammatory factor. However, the role and mechanism of COX-2 in Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis are not clear yet. To address this question, we employed a mouse model exposed to Cr(VI) through intranasal instillation of particulate zinc chromate (ZnCrO4) for 12 weeks. Metabolomics and RNA-seq assays revealed enhanced activity of the arachidonic acid (AA)/eicosanoid metabolism pathway in lung tissues from mice exposed to Cr(VI). COX-2, the key enzyme of the AA/eicosanoid pathway, was significantly upre- gulated in Cr(VI)-exposed lung tissues, as well as in the …
The Gender Sidelining Trap In Mediator Selection, Erin E. Gleason Alvarez
The Gender Sidelining Trap In Mediator Selection, Erin E. Gleason Alvarez
Journal of Dispute Resolution
One of the greatest advantages of commercial mediation is the parties’ ability to construct the process to fit their needs. In mediation, parties are free to make decisions about how the conversation will be structured—whether in person or online, joint session or not, whether negotiations will take place over a few hours or days, and so forth. Here, parties are also uniquely empowered to design what their settlement will ultimately look like—or decide if settlement is even appropriate. Perhaps most importantly, parties decide who will serve as the mediator, the person they trust to facilitate their discussions and negotiations, and …

There is a huge problem with the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act (“EFAA”): it contains major ambiguities. The Act was signed into law by President Biden in 2022, and it has the potential to affect many Americans. It has been estimated that about 60 million workers—over half of the non-unionized private workforce—are subject to mandatory arbitration agreements as part of their employment. The Act states in relevant part that no arbitration agreement “shall be valid or enforceable with respect to a case which is filed under Federal, Tribal, or State law and relates to the …
Reversing Perverse Incentives And Aligning Interests: A Statutory Approach To Combatting Sex Trafficking In The Hospitality Industry, Sara Seymour
Vanderbilt Law Review
The hospitality industry has a sex trafficking problem: Seventy-five percent of sex trafficking victims report coming into contact with a hotel at some point during their trafficking. Though hotel franchisors publicly tout their efforts to combat sex trafficking, they are not properly or adequately incentivized to intervene in a meaningful way. The majority of hotels in the United States are franchised, and for every franchised room that is rented out—whether for sex trafficking or otherwise—hotel franchisors receive royalties. Further, franchisors are motivated to dictate material consistency, like what brand of soap to use, but not safety measures, because it allows …

Peacebuilding At The San Diego-Tijuana Border: A Ground Level View, Rebeca Cazares-Adame Md, Mph, Andrew Blum Phd
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
This brief complements the work of researchers like Kleinfeld and Blattman by seeking to understand in a more inductive way the work of peacebuilders on the ground in Tijuana, a city experiencing systemic, chronic violence. Based on survey research and interviews conducted with those peacebuilders, the brief identifies insights that can help inform a peacebuilding field that includes and integrates work in conflict zones and non-conflict zones experiencing widespread violence. Developing this more integrated approach is particularly important at the moment as we move into President Trump’s second term and begin to see the impacts of his administration in the …
Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake
Risk Factors For Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Amputations Among Black Americans, Darnell L. Blake
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Evidence suggests that Black Americans (BAs) are at a significantly higher risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD)-related amputations. This study aimed to examine risk factors for non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (NTLEA) among BAs with PAD addressing a significant knowledge gap regarding racial disparities in PAD outcomes. Grounded in Bandura's social cognitive theory, which posits the interplay among personal factors, environmental influences, and behavior, this study examines how age, gender, income, and comorbidities like cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and diabetes influence NTLEA across various insurance types (private, Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay). This quantitative cross-sectional study used the 2020 National Inpatient Sample, 1% …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Prescription-Based Virtual Reality Solution For Chronic Pain Management, Adesina Adegoke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The gap in practice addressed in this educational project was that the staff at the project site in central Massachusetts did not have adequate knowledge of how virtual reality (VR) technology can be a treatment alternative to pain medication. According to a survey in 2010, approximately 24% of the adult population of Massachusetts had chronic pain and may often depend on opioids for pain management. The problem question was: Does educating the mental health staff on VR technology as a viable alternative to opioid medication improve knowledge as evidenced from pre- to postsurvey? With this evidence-based educational project, I aimed …
Toward An Economic Fair Housing Act, Nat Jordan
Toward An Economic Fair Housing Act, Nat Jordan
Michigan Law Review
This Note evaluates the prospect of an “Economic Fair Housing Act” through the framework of antidiscrimination law. The proposed bill—a brainchild of housing expert Richard Kahlenberg—would amend the Fair Housing Act to make economic status a protected class alongside race, national origin, religion, sex, and disability. Currently, fair housing lawsuits against local governments rarely succeed. Plaintiffs must present resounding statistical evidence of blatant racial disparities directly caused by exclusionary policies. Simultaneously, many local governments deter homebuilding through restrictive zoning ordinances that prevent lower-income people from moving in.
An Economic Fair Housing Act (EFHA) could help address these twin shortcomings of …
The End(S) Of Bankruptcy Exceptionalism: Purdue Pharma And The Problem Of Social Debt, Jonathan C. Lipson, Pamela Foohey
The End(S) Of Bankruptcy Exceptionalism: Purdue Pharma And The Problem Of Social Debt, Jonathan C. Lipson, Pamela Foohey
Cardozo Law Review
The Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 decision in the controversial chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization of opioid-maker Purdue Pharma ends the use of nonconsensual third-party “releases,” which discharge (eliminate) liabilities of nondebtors who may share liability with a corporate debtor. Although the majority opinion is correct that the Bankruptcy Code does not permit this, it failed to recognize the problematic exceptionalism of the lower courts which approved those releases or the “social” qualities of Purdue Pharma’s mass tort liability.
Bankruptcy exceptionalism has been a contested concept since it emerged over fifteen years ago and reflects a willingness to bend the rule of …

Science of Reading
The Science of Reading (SOR) is intended to benefit all children as they develop a strong foundation in reading. For a growing number of students who have proficiencies in languages other than English, how they experience SOR classroom activities differs. Students who are learning English as an additional language (English Learners) come from a variety of language backgrounds and enter at different levels of English proficiency, ranging from beginner to advanced. This research brief describes how phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency are different for English Learners and offers advice on how to interpret their performances, differentiating instruction to address their …

Impact Tracing: Identifying The Culprit Of Misinformation In Encrypted Messaging Systems, Zhongming Wang, Tao Xiang, Xiaoguo Li, Biwen Chen, Guomin Yang, Chuan Ma, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Encrypted messaging systems obstruct content moderation, although they provide end-to-end security. As a result, misinformation proliferates in these systems, thereby exacerbating online hate and harassment. The paradigm of “Reporting-then-Tracing” shows great potential in mitigating the spread of misinformation. For instance, message traceback (CCS’19) traces all the dissemination paths of a message, while source tracing (CCS’21) traces its originator. However, message traceback lacks privacy preservation for non-influential users (e.g., users who only receive the message once), while source tracing maintains privacy but only provides limited traceability. In this paper, we initiate the study of impact tracing. Intuitively, impact tracing traces influential …

Bridging Expert Knowledge With Deep Learning Techniques For Just-In-Time Defect Prediction, Xin Zhou, Donggyun Han, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Just-In-Time (JIT) defect prediction aims to automatically predict whether a commit is defective or not, and has been widely studied in recent years. In general, most studies can be classified into two categories: 1) simple models using traditional machine learning classifiers with hand-crafted features, and 2) complex models using deep learning techniques to automatically extract features from commit contents. Hand-crafted features used by simple models are based on expert knowledge but may not fully represent the semantic meaning of the commits. On the other hand, deep learning-based features used by complex models represent the semantic meaning of commits but may …

Stack Overflow is one of the most influential Software Question & Answer (SQA) websites, hosting millions of programming-related questions and answers. Tags play a critical role in efficiently organizing the contents on Stack Overflow and are vital to support various site operations, such as querying relevant content. Poorly chosen tags often lead to issues such as tag ambiguity and tag explosion. Therefore, a precise and accurate automated tag recommendation technique is needed. Inspired by the recent success of pre-trained models (PTMs) in natural language processing (NLP), we present PTM4Tag+, a tag recommendation framework for Stack Overflow posts that utilize PTMs …

Exploring & Exploiting High-Order Graph Structure For Sparse Knowledge Graph Completion, Tao He, Ming Liu, Yixin Cao, Zekun Wang, Zihao Zheng, Bing Qin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sparse Knowledge Graph (KG) scenarios pose a challenge for previous Knowledge Graph Completion (KGC) methods, that is, the completion performance decreases rapidly with the increase of graph sparsity. This problem is also exacerbated because of the widespread existence of sparse KGs in practical applications. To alleviate this challenge, we present a novel framework, LR-GCN, that is able to automatically capture valuable long-range dependency among entities to supplement insufficient structure features and distill logical reasoning knowledge for sparse KGC. The proposed approach comprises two main components: a GNN-based predictor and a reasoning path distiller. The reasoning path distiller explores high-order graph …
