Supported Decision-Making And The Inclusion Of People Who Lack Decisional Capacity In Greater Than Minimal Risk Research, Aaron Eli Segal, David Wendler, Dana Howard Jul 2026

Supported Decision-Making And The Inclusion Of People Who Lack Decisional Capacity In Greater Than Minimal Risk Research, Aaron Eli Segal, David Wendler, Dana Howard

Faculty and Staff Publications

In recent years, some have argued that supported decision-making can be ethically superior to surrogate decision-making with respect to decisions involving adults with cognitive and intellectual impairments or disabilities. In this paper, we argue that supported decision-making could also be ethically superior to surrogate decision-making in the context of clinical research that involves greater than minimal net risks. In current practice, adults who lack decisional capacity are often excluded from research that involves greater than minimal net risks (call this the minimal risk requirement). While this approach is intended to protect them, it can be ethically problematic, in part because …

Evolution And Prospects Of Polarization Image Simulation Technology, Gengpeng Li, Wei Cai, Zhiyong Yang, Zhili Zhang, Xiaowei Wang Jul 2026

Evolution And Prospects Of Polarization Image Simulation Technology, Gengpeng Li, Wei Cai, Zhiyong Yang, Zhili Zhang, Xiaowei Wang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Polarization image simulation technology is a key means to break through the bottleneck of polarization data acquisition and promote the development of polarization vision. This study systematically reviewed three evolutionary paradigms of this technology: Physical mechanism simulation, based on the polarization bidirectional reflectance distribution function and polarization ray tracing, strictly solves polarization light transmission, which has high interpretability and credibility, but it is computationally complex and lacks visual realism. Data-driven simulation, using models like neural radiance fields to learn polarization appearance from data, has high generation efficiency and visual fidelity but weaker physical consistency and interpretability. Physics-data fusion simulation …

Mbse Design And Approach-Phase Operational Simulation Of Bdsbas Airborne Receiver, Ruihua Liu, Tongwei Wang, Zan Ma Jul 2026

Mbse Design And Approach-Phase Operational Simulation Of Bdsbas Airborne Receiver, Ruihua Liu, Tongwei Wang, Zan Ma

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In view of the problem that traditional document-based design methods are difficult to effectively capture the dynamic characteristics and internal interactions in navigation accuracy and integrity assurance required by BeiDou satellite-based augmentation system (BDSBAS) airborne receivers during the approach phase, which easily leads to designs deviating from actual requirements and affects system performance, a model-based systems engineering(MBSE) method was introduced. A multi-dimensional system architecture model encompassing system requirement analysis, behavior description, structure design, and parameter constraints was established. Taking BDSBAS as the object, a co-simulation method of system modeling language and MATLAB for required navigation performance (RNP) was proposed, …

Optimization Of Convective Heat Transfer Parameters For Spindles Based On Finite Element Thermal Analysis, Jiali Zhang, Haiping Liu, Qinsheng Jiang, Sina Dang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In view of the low simulation accuracy of existing finite element models for thermal characteristics of spindles caused by ignoring the influences of geometric characteristics of convective surfaces and fluid flow patterns and often adopting constant temperature loading in the setting of convective heat transfer boundary conditions, this paper proposed an optimization method for convective heat transfer parameters of spindles based on finite element thermal analysis. Combined with the geometric shapes and spatial positions of various convective surfaces of the spindle system, the calculation criterion of the convective heat transfer coefficient was determined through dimensional analysis according to the …

Personalizable Metabolic Models To Enable Immune Characterization And Drug Discovery, Joshua Loecker Jul 2026

Personalizable Metabolic Models To Enable Immune Characterization And Drug Discovery, Joshua Loecker

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Cellular metabolism is reshaped by disease and physiological state, and genome-scale metabolic networks (GSMNs) offer a systematic way to interrogate this biology and identify therapeutic targets. Building a GSMN from expression data, however, requires a sequence of stages including read processing, normalization and gene-activity classification, multi-omic integration, model reconstruction, simulation, and biological interpretation. These are typically handled by disconnected tools spanning multiple programming languages, file formats, and databases. The resulting reliance on heterogeneous interfaces and manual steps threatens reproducibility. This work develops an ecosystem of computational tools that carry an analysis from raw sequencing reads to mechanistic biological interpretation. First, …

Fundamental Uncertainties Invalidate The Precision Of Obsidian Hydration Dating: A Rapa Nui Case Study, Robert Dinapoli, Carl P. Lipo Jul 2026

Fundamental Uncertainties Invalidate The Precision Of Obsidian Hydration Dating: A Rapa Nui Case Study, Robert Dinapoli, Carl P. Lipo

Anthropology Datasets

Obsidian hydration dating (OHD) measures water absorption into volcanic glass to estimate artifact age. Recent studies using infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy (IR-PAS) claim ±30-year precision, comparable to radiocarbon dating. We tested these claims by applying Bayesian hierarchical models to 242 published IR-PAS measurements from Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Standard OHD practice treats burial temperature and humidity as known constants; we instead modeled them as uncertain variables and propagated that uncertainty through the rate equation. Realistic dating uncertainties are ±300 years, ten times larger than the claimed value. The 95% credible interval for any individual date (~600 years) exceeds Rapa Nui's entire …

Beyond Ai Detection: A Pilot Study Of Integrevise And Viva-Based Verification Of Student Understanding In Ai-Mediated Assessment, James Hutson, Kyle Poyer, Kelvin Adshola Atologun

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the Integrevise platform through a repeated cross-sectional, multicycle pilot case study of viva-based verification in AI-mediated assessment environments. Integrevise pairs a submitted written artifact with a short adaptive viva in which students explain their work, reasoning, and application in their own words. Rather than functioning as an AI detector or automated grading system, the platform operates as a diagnostic assessment layer intended to surface comprehension, authorship confidence, and disengagement risk before final grades become the only available signal. The pilot was conducted across Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 at a private liberal arts college in the Midwest; …

Voices Unheard: A Phenomenological Study Of Access And Inclusion Of College Students With Autism In The Southeastern United States, Janet L. Kuchinski

Dissertations

Although access to higher education has expanded for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), many continue to encounter barriers to meaningful inclusion, belonging, and participation within the college environment. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) study was to explore the lived experiences of college students with ASD regarding access and inclusion in higher education. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit five college students with ASD who were at least 19 years of age, currently enrolled in college, and registered with disability services. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted via Microsoft Teams and analyzed using established IPA procedures. …

Reclaiming The Sacred Science Of Garbha Samskara: The Adi Shaiva Tradition's Vision Of Conscious Conception And Prenatal Care, Rani Muthukrishnan

All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)

This paper examines Garbha Samskara practices described in the Garbha Upanishad within the Adi Shaiva tradition, exploring how ancient prenatal sciences cultivated cognitive development and spiritual consciousness in children. Drawing on original Sanskrit verses, the eNpregnancy program revived by Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism Sri Nithyananda Paramashivam (SPH), Akashic record readings, historical accounts of royal women who raised enlightened children, and testimonies of parents participating in the eNpregnancy program in modern times, the study demonstrates that pre-colonial Indian societies possessed advanced understandings of fetal consciousness and maternal–fetal bonding. It argues that modern Western educational paradigms and the contemporary expectations imposed on …

The Relationship Between Cognitive Control And Individual Differences In Working Memory Capacity: A High-Density Eeg Study, Conghao Gao Jul 2026

The Relationship Between Cognitive Control And Individual Differences In Working Memory Capacity: A High-Density Eeg Study, Conghao Gao

All NMU Master's Theses

Empirical evidence has suggested a close relationship between human working memory capacity and cognitive control approaches. Proactive control refers to the anticipatory, sustainable maintenance of cognitive control process. However, the relationship between higher working memory capacity and the use of proactive cognitive control has been inconsistent. Understanding the neural bases would substantially expand our current understanding of cognitive control and working memory models. Specifically, the examination of P3b amplitude, part of the event-related potential, evoked by a cue would provide further understanding in neural mechanisms of cognitive control. The current study examined participants’ cognitive control approaches and their electrocortical activity …

Highly Confident But Slightly Uncertain: A Long Overdue Reinvention Of The School Scientific Method, Teaching - Volume 4, Stephen Demeo Jul 2026

Highly Confident But Slightly Uncertain: A Long Overdue Reinvention Of The School Scientific Method, Teaching - Volume 4, Stephen Demeo

Publications and Research

In Volume 4, the last book of the series, I continue the argument for greater parity between conceptual knowledge—the "what" of science—and methodological knowledge—the "how" of science—but in the context of teacher instruction. To this end, two literature reviews are presented: One on how students build confidence, specifically regarding the reliability or consistency of measurement or results, and the other on scientific uncertainty. Research studies focusing on student misconceptions are summarized and organized from the elementary to the college level. These literature reviews describe invaluable ways for teachers to improve their instruction, while providing examples of experiments that can be …

Physical Drivers Of Pismo Clam (Tivela Stultorum) Populations At The Northern Range Edge In Monterey Bay, California, Olivia M. Beaudoin Jul 2026

Physical Drivers Of Pismo Clam (Tivela Stultorum) Populations At The Northern Range Edge In Monterey Bay, California, Olivia M. Beaudoin

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Environmental factors and physiological tolerances shape species abundance and distribution across their geographic ranges. Species inhabiting coastal systems are subject to a range of conditions driven by both geology and oceanography. For example, infaunal organisms are influenced by sediment characteristics and beach morphology, nearshore wave dynamics, and sea surface temperature (SST). An infaunal resident of the sandy beach intertidal, the Pismo clam (Tivela stultorum), was once a valuable commercial resource along the California coast, ranging from Santa Cruz County, CA to Magdalena Bay, BCS, Mexico. Pismo clams experienced considerable population declines due to overexploitation in the early 20th century. Populations …

Chaotropic And Kosmotropic Effects Of Brines On Protein Structure: Habitability Across The Solar System, Shelby Dawn Osborne Jul 2026

Chaotropic And Kosmotropic Effects Of Brines On Protein Structure: Habitability Across The Solar System, Shelby Dawn Osborne

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Salts exhibit unique and specific effects on biomolecular structure depending on the physical nature of the salt (ion density, formation of hydration shells, direct binding to protein). This thesis implements biochemical, thermodynamic, and computational methods to investigate how the nature of the salt effects protein structure, which aids in defining the habitability of various brine solutions. By using simple proteins and solar system relevant salts, we inspect the physical reactions of proteins to these saltwater environments to understand which salts stabilize or destabilize protein structure. Several methods of experimentation are utilized to provide an understanding of the interaction relevant to …

Statistical Machine Learning For Calibrating Climate Model Wind Fields., Augustine Ouru Jul 2026

Statistical Machine Learning For Calibrating Climate Model Wind Fields., Augustine Ouru

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates statistical calibration methods for wind data from Global Climate Models (GCMs), with emphasis on wind speed and wind direction. The analysis uses 30 years of daily observed and GCM wind records from 9 spatial locations in the South East USA. Wind is represented in polar coordinates, but also often modeled in Cartesian coordinates. Four calibration models are compared: a marginal wind speed model, an independent Cartesian model. The calibration models are based on semi-parametric quantile regression, a flexible conditional density estimator fitted using neural networks. The neural network objective functions are optimized using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) …

Preemption Of State Fraudulent Transfer Law By The Bankruptcy Code, David G. Carlson Jul 2026

Preemption Of State Fraudulent Transfer Law By The Bankruptcy Code, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article argues that state law tort claims based on fraudulent transfers are preempted by the Bankruptcy Code. It contends that allowing such tort claims to persist interferes with a bankruptcy trustee's ability to achieve universal settlements and recover assets, as the trustee cannot guarantee immunity from third-party tort liabilities.

Financial Independence And Adult Role Expectations Of College Students In Emerging Adulthood, Elizabeth Ampomaa Amoako Jul 2026

Financial Independence And Adult Role Expectations Of College Students In Emerging Adulthood, Elizabeth Ampomaa Amoako

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The transition to adulthood has become increasingly prolonged and individualized. This raises questions about how college students conceptualize their readiness for long-term adult roles. Marriage and parenthood remain culturally meaningful markers of adult status, and expectations regarding the timing of these transitions offer a window into how emerging adults integrate identity development and financial considerations into life planning. Grounded in Arnett’s theory of emerging adulthood and Luyckx and colleagues’ multidimensional model of identity formation, the present study examined how identity processes and financial independence relate to college students’ anticipated timing of marriage and parenthood. Data were drawn from 247 undergraduate …

Tipping In The Digital Age: Comparing Group And Individual Tipping Behavior Across Cashless Payments, Akosua Sayer Koduah Jul 2026

Tipping In The Digital Age: Comparing Group And Individual Tipping Behavior Across Cashless Payments, Akosua Sayer Koduah

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tipping has long been central to the U.S. hospitality industry, where it provides a substantial share of service workers’ income. What was once a cash-based practice is now increasingly mediated through digital platforms such as card readers, QR codes, and peer-to-peer apps. These systems introduce features such as visibility of the decision, preset defaults, and group payment options that reshape how customers decide whether and how much to tip. While traditional tipping has been widely studied, research on digital restaurant tipping remains limited. This study focuses on two underexplored mechanisms: visibility (whether staff can observe the decision) and group context …

Identification Of Conditionally Essential Genes Required For Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Adaptation To The Chicken Cecal Extract Through Ex Vivo Modeling And Transposon Insertion Sequencing, Deborah Bukola Olubanjo Jul 2026

Identification Of Conditionally Essential Genes Required For Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Adaptation To The Chicken Cecal Extract Through Ex Vivo Modeling And Transposon Insertion Sequencing, Deborah Bukola Olubanjo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) remains a major foodborne pathogen associated with chicken, where it can persist in the intestinal tract without overt disease and contribute to zoonotic transmission. The chicken cecum represents a complex ecological niche shaped by microbial competition, host-derived substrates, short-chain fatty acids, oxygen limitation, extracellular components, and diverse metabolic gradients. Although transposon insertion sequencing (Tn-seq) has been widely used to define bacterial fitness determinants, limited work has examined genome-wide adaptation of S. Typhimurium in chicken ceca-derived ex vivo systems that preserve key features of the avian cecal environment. This dissertation investigated conditionally essential genes required …

Jme 4110: Drill-Powered Beach Umbrella Anchor, Matthew Barton, Tanin Ramnath, Marquan Bailey, Zachary Van-Horn, Kaelin Mendoza

Washington University / UMSL Mechanical Engineering Design Project JME 4110

A common and potentially hazardous situation faced by beachgoers is when standard umbrella anchors fail to hold during wind gusts, causing the umbrella to potentially go airborne and injure nearby people. Existing anchors require manual operation, leading to inconsistent grip and no resistance to different wind directions. Our project is a motorized three anchor system that drives augers into the sand to ensure a consistent grip and security against the wind.

Investigating And Re-Imagining Contemporary Religious Leadership, Amy Lawton, Feyza Akova Jul 2026

Investigating And Re-Imagining Contemporary Religious Leadership, Amy Lawton, Feyza Akova

Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Sociologists, anthropologists, cognitive scientists, and others have shown that religion is a feature of life in every known human society (Bellah 2011). While the cultural contexts, organizing principles, and values of each religion differ greatly – so much so that “religion” is a problematic universal category (Asad 1993) – many religions do share certain characteristics. One of those characteristics – shared among most social groups regardless of their purpose – is leadership, variously defined. Spiritual and religious groups, gatherings, and collectives have specific individuals that they turn to for wisdom, spiritual or moral guidance, fostering community, and/or ritual facilitation. We …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Up to half of critically ill children experience multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), which worsens outcomes and increases mortality risk. Cefepime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic commonly used in pediatric sepsis, but its pharmacokinetics during MODS has not been evaluated. We performed a prospective, observational study of critically ill children with MODS who were administered cefepime and collected up to 15 whole blood samples over 3 days using volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS). We performed nonlinear mixed-effects modeling to develop a population PK model for cefepime in children with MODS. We then reran our final population PK model using estimated plasma concentrations …
