Effects Of Foam Rolling With And Without Vibration On Contralateral Limb Range Of Motion And Jump Performance, Lawton P. Hawkins
Effects Of Foam Rolling With And Without Vibration On Contralateral Limb Range Of Motion And Jump Performance, Lawton P. Hawkins
Honors Theses
Recently, foam rolling with vibration (VFR) has gained popularity with having similar benefits to standard foam rolling (FR). VFR may induce a greater improvement in pain pressure threshold, which could lead to a greater improvement in range of motion (ROM). When applied to one limb, improvements in ROM occur in the non-rolled limb for both FR and VFR. Studies comparing the effects of FR and VFR in terms of acute changes in ROM and performance have reported mixed results. Using a larger dosage of VFR may provide a greater improvement in ROM for the non-rolled limb compared to FR. PURPOSE: …
Establishment Of Six Flags Over The Deconstruction Of Sandtown, John Ely
Establishment Of Six Flags Over The Deconstruction Of Sandtown, John Ely
Master's Theses
Development, both private and public, has played a crucial role in the knowledge that historians can take from the land, but the desire to build quickly ultimately destroyed many sites before they were properly studied. The Chattahoochee River, along with almost all the other rivers and streams in the Southeast, supported not only survival but civilization. Unfortunately, almost the entire catalog of scholarly sources regarding these places was written by men of European descent, and these writers rarely discuss the details regarding the fate of the sites that were destroyed in the name of industry. Sandtown was an almost mythic …

Optimized Student Grouping For Enhanced Classroom Performance, Kathryn E. Reardon
Optimized Student Grouping For Enhanced Classroom Performance, Kathryn E. Reardon
Honors Theses
Effective grouping methods enhance classroom collaboration and allow for a student-centered teaching approach; however, traditional grouping methods are time-consuming, subjective, and can create inconsistent group dynamics. This project addresses these challenges by employing a data-driven approach to optimize student groups based on academic performance, behavior, attendance, language barriers, and teacher preferences. The minimum viable product is a web application with an algorithm-driven system to group students and a database storage for group results. During the initiation phase, a problem was defined with a proposed solution. During the planning phase, potential design choices and grouping methods were researched and assessed. During …
English Language Teachers’ Use Of Technology In Libya: A Qualitative Study Using The Samr Model, Tasnem Alarbi
English Language Teachers’ Use Of Technology In Libya: A Qualitative Study Using The Samr Model, Tasnem Alarbi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing dominance of technology in almost every aspect of our life and the evidence-based potential of technology to support learning, it becomes important to integrate technology in language instruction. Although there is a huge body of research on the effectiveness of technology in transforming learning in the field of language learning, there is little research reflecting on current teachers’ practices of instructional technology in language learning environments. Guided by the student-centered learning theory and the SAMR framework, this qualitative study explored the current practices of English as a Foreign language (EFL) teachers as related to technology integration in …
Interpreting Imu Data: Applications In Baseball Injury Analysis And Prevention, Levi Gingerich
Interpreting Imu Data: Applications In Baseball Injury Analysis And Prevention, Levi Gingerich
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Biomechanical analysis of baseball pitching has traditionally relied on laboratory-based motion capture and high-speed video. However, wearable IMUs, containing accelerometers, gyroscopes, and sometimes magnetometers, have the potential to revolutionize on-field data collection, enabling real-time kinematic and kinetic assessments in game or practice scenarios. These technological advances are particularly crucial as they allow for continuous monitoring of the substantial mechanical stresses imposed on pitchers' elbows and shoulders, helping identify potential injury risks such as UCL tears, rotator cuff strains, and tendon overuse before they become severe.
This paper provides a high-level framework for integrating IMU data with tendon-remodeling principles specific to …
What Is Climate Smart Agriculture? : A Standardized Framework For Assessing The Effectiveness Of Climate Smart Agriculture Systems And Practices, Olivia G. Messerges, Trenton W. Ford
What Is Climate Smart Agriculture? : A Standardized Framework For Assessing The Effectiveness Of Climate Smart Agriculture Systems And Practices, Olivia G. Messerges, Trenton W. Ford
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
The United States agricultural system is challenged with feeding a growing population, adapting to climate change, and minimizing environmental damage. In response to these challenges, the paradigm of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) was developed to describe practices that address these challenges as a comprehensive strategy to address climate change and increase food security.
Definitions of CSA vary, but surround three main pillars: increasing productivity, enhancing adaptation, and reducing emissions. However, no standardized framework exists to assess if practices or technologies identified as "climate-smart" produce the desired benefits. A standardized framework would enable producers, policymakers, and researchers to improve CSA implementation, policy …

The Implications Of Accounting In The Real World, Cayden A. Luke
The Implications Of Accounting In The Real World, Cayden A. Luke
Honors Theses
This thesis consists of a series of case studies performed throughout the duration of the accountancy 420 class. Each case was connected to a key area of financial reporting, where we learned about a topic and then reflected individually and within groups. As we explored the intricate relationships between finance, economics, policies, and ethics, we were exposed to unsettling insights that led to eye-opening revelations. The China Hustle followed Dan David as his journey led to the discovery of inadequate regulation of the Chinese government in their financial world and the lies that we are fed about our own. This …
Bullying Among Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disabilities And Restorative Practices To Heal The School Environment, Elizabeth M. Mattingly
Bullying Among Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disabilities And Restorative Practices To Heal The School Environment, Elizabeth M. Mattingly
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the involvement of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in the bullying dynamic and propose restorative circles as an alternative to exclusionary discipline practices. Students with emotional and behavioral disabilities are more likely than other children to be both the perpetrators and the victims of bullying due to their difficulties with emotional regulation and appropriate conflict resolution. Creating a school community that teaches appropriate social behaviors and healthy conflict resolution could reduce the rate at which students with emotional and behavioral disabilities are involved in the bullying dynamic. This paper examines the …

The critical juncture of slavery abolition in Cuba was marked by independency uprisings, and imperial re-articulations. Within this context, thousands of formerly enslaved men and women coped with renewed forms of coercion, inscribed in the intersection of race and gender. This article focuses on the resourceful use of the law by formerly enslaved women (renamed patrocinadas in 1880) to liberate themselves from the forced apprenticeship known as patronato, enforced alongside the abolition law. An in-depth examination of two files from the Miscelánea de Expedientes fund held at the Cuban National Archive underscores how Black women struggled to secure wages, …
Who Holds The Hammer? A Private Ordering Framework As The Key To Carpenter’S Privacy Puzzle, Matthew Green
Who Holds The Hammer? A Private Ordering Framework As The Key To Carpenter’S Privacy Puzzle, Matthew Green
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
This Note builds on the Supreme Court’s reasoning in Carpenter v. United States, suggesting that its technology-specific approach may be insufficiently elastic to address the complexities of modern data privacy. Through an analysis of several exemplars, this Note advocates for a private ordering framework—where data collectors respond to consumer expectations of privacy through self-regulating practices—as a more adaptive and effective means of safeguarding digital privacy. This approach preserves the third-party doctrine while reducing the burden on courts to draw technological boundaries in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
Using Video Education To Improve Patient Knowledge Of Cellular Therapy Side Effects: Cytokine Release Syndrome, Neurological Toxicities, & Prolonged Pancytopenia, Leslie Bennett
Doctoral Projects
This project evaluated the effectiveness of short educational videos on CAR T-cell therapy, cytokine release syndrome, neurological toxicities, and prolonged pancytopenia for blood cancer patients. At Stanford Health Care in California, in the ambulatory clinic of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BMT-CT), we obtained a convenience sample of individuals with multiple myeloma or lymphoma preparing for CAR T-cell therapy. A pre-and post-questionnaire assessed the patients' knowledge of CAR T-cell therapy and its side effects. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to determine changes in knowledge. Thirteen patients enrolled, eight completed post-surveys, and four watched the videos. The median knowledge …

The aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AaRSs) are an ancient family of structurally diverse enzymes that are divided into two major classes. The functionalities of most AaRSs are inextricably linked to their oligomeric states. While GluRSs were previously classified as monomers, the current investigation reveals that the form expressed in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a rotationally pseudosymmetrical homodimer featuring intersubunit tRNA binding sites. Both subunits display a highly bent, “pipe strap” conformation, with the anticodon binding domain directed toward the active site. The tRNA binding sites are similar in shape to those of the monomeric GluRSs, but are formed through an approximately 180-degree rotation …
Jarkesy’S Stakes For The Sec, James Fallows Tierney
Jarkesy’S Stakes For The Sec, James Fallows Tierney
Duke Law Journal
This Article examines the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision in SEC v. Jarkesy for the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC” or “Commission”). In Jarkesy, the Court held that Congress cannot assign the adjudication of securities antifraud violations seeking civil penalties to an administrative agency without a jury trial, for such punitive actions involve “private rights.” Although this ruling might suggest a reduction in SEC enforcement actions due to the higher costs of federal jury trials, the SEC had already adjusted its practices following Lucia v. SEC in 2018. The Commission shifted away from using administrative law judges for civil …
Presidential Administration And The Accountability Illusion, Brian D. Feinstein
Presidential Administration And The Accountability Illusion, Brian D. Feinstein
Duke Law Journal
For over a decade, the Supreme Court has upended executive-branch structures that insulated administrative agencies from the White House. Judges and scholars justify this project in part by claiming that presidential control over administration boosts agencies’ accountability to the American people. Yet, despite the importance of “the people” as this endeavor’s asserted beneficiaries, public attitudes concerning this foundational claim are unknown. This Article puts this claimed connection to the test. Grounded in a set of novel experiments involving over five thousand participants, it presents the first evidence of Americans’ views regarding whether greater presidential authority over agencies enhances accountability to …
Flips And Splits In Administrative Law, Daniel J. Hemel
Flips And Splits In Administrative Law, Daniel J. Hemel
Duke Law Journal
In Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, the Supreme Court discarded the four decades old Chevron deference regime and circumscribed the authority of federal agencies to choose among multiple interpretations of ambiguous statutes. In justifying its ruling, the Loper Bright majority argued that Chevron deference had generated unnecessary regulatory uncertainty by allowing agencies to switch from one interpretation of an ambiguous statute to another. In this respect, Loper Bright marks a move toward temporal uniformity in federal law: Once the courts recognize a certain reading of a statute as “best,” that reading will reign under Loper Bright unless and until Congress …
Scientific And Technical Expertise After Loper Bright, Sapna Kumar
Scientific And Technical Expertise After Loper Bright, Sapna Kumar
Duke Law Journal
Courts once trusted federal agencies for their expertise in administering complex statutory schemes, particularly regarding science and technology. Unlike judges, agency officials can narrowly focus on a specific area of law and have access to experts to inform their decision making. In Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, the Supreme Court created a presumption that, absent language to the contrary, Congress intends for agencies to interpret statutory ambiguities. Chevron allowed agencies to utilize their varied forms of expertise while ensuring oversight from generalist judges. This court–agency partnership abruptly ended, however, in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. The Court …
Our Marbury: Loper Bright And The Administrative State, Cass R. Sunstein
Our Marbury: Loper Bright And The Administrative State, Cass R. Sunstein
Duke Law Journal
Loper Bright, overruling Chevron, is unmistakably part of administrative law’s current “Grand Narrative,” which sees contemporary administrative agencies with suspicion, as a product of successive breaches of Article I, II, and III of the Constitution. The decision should be seen as our Marbury v. Madison—an effort to insist that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department to say what the law is. But will the decision produce large changes? The answer depends, of course, on the meaning of both Chevron and Loper Bright. Under Chevron, courts hardly gave a blank check to agencies; on the contrary, …

Understanding mechanisms of resistance to active therapies is crucial for developing more effective treatments. Here, we investigate resistance to anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF plus chemotherapy treatment in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients from the IMblaze370 trial (NCT02788279). While anti-VEGF does not select for secondary mutations, anti-EGFR leads to simultaneous mutations in EGFR and MAPK, but not PI3K pathway genes. Notably, we observe frequent acquired mutations in the EGFR extracellular but not intracellular domain and that patients with higher baseline expression of EGFR-ligands are prone to acquire resistant mutations. This data reveals a ligand-activated EGFR/MAPK-signaling dependency in CRC. We also observe enrichment for …

Murphy’S Canon: Leadership In The Age Of Uncertainty, Ray Forbes
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
How might the nefarious “Murphy’s Law,” allegedly created by a disgruntled American aerospace engineer in the 1950s, apply in today’s chaotic world? Just how applicable is the law now in a new era that has been characterized by the descriptive label of FUD, or Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt? This paper will explore the infamous Murphy adage, as well as describe who Murphy was and how he came to formulate his cheeky directive. Additionally, this piece will expand on Murphy’s original provocative rule, feature several versions of it, provide alternative formulations, and discuss how the law might be reinterpreted to more …
The Crosstalk Between Muscle And Adipose Tissue In Health And Disease, Chang Gui
The Crosstalk Between Muscle And Adipose Tissue In Health And Disease, Chang Gui
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the crosstalk between adipose and muscle tissues in physiology and pathophysiology, particularly focusing on the therapeutic potential of muscle-associated adipose tissue in muscle regeneration. Adipose tissue, an endocrine organ, secretes cytokines (a.k.a. adipokines) that significantly and negatively impact muscle function in conditions like diabetes, obesity, and aging. Whether similar signals mediate communication between muscle and its adjacent adipose tissue through paracrine signaling is unknown, as is whether this communication is therapeutically modifiable. Understanding the interactions between adipose and muscle tissues could lead to novel therapeutic strategies for improving muscle regeneration and function. …

Investigating Neural, Neurovascular, And Vascular Function: Insights From Imaging 5-Ht2ar Compounds, Optogenetic Motor Mapping, And Cross-Modal Functional Mapping, Jonah Aryeh Padawer-Curry
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Understanding how brain activity relates to behavior and cognition remains a central challenge in neuroscience. Brain function emerges from interactions between electrical, chemical, and blood dynamics across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Capturing this complexity requires methods that assess both large-scale neurophysiological activity and precise, cell-type-specific processes. Widefield optical imaging (WFOI) enables high-resolution monitoring of cortical function by simultaneously measuring hemodynamic and calcium dynamics. WFOI is particularly valuable for studying psychedelics, which show therapeutic potential but may alter neurovascular coupling, complicating the interpretation of hemodynamic signals. Using WFOI, we examined the hallucinogenic 5-HT2A receptor agonist DOI in awake mice, revealing …
