On The Invariant Integration Of A Vector In Some Problems In Mechanics, Saad Bin Mansoor
On The Invariant Integration Of A Vector In Some Problems In Mechanics, Saad Bin Mansoor
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Invariant integration of vectors and tensors over manifolds was introduced around fifty years ago by V.N. Folomeshkin, though the concept appears to not have attracted much attention among researchers. Although it is a sophisticated concept, the operation of the invariant integration of vectors is actually required to correctly solve some problems in mechanics. Two such problems are discussed in the present exposition, in the context of a two-dimensional Euclidean space covered by a polar coordinate system. The notion of invariant integration becomes necessary when the space is described without any reference to a Cartesian coordinate system.
The Concept Of T-Basis And Vector-Valued Hardy Classes, Bilal Bilalov, Sabina Rahib Sadigova
The Concept Of T-Basis And Vector-Valued Hardy Classes, Bilal Bilalov, Sabina Rahib Sadigova
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper introduces the concept of a t-basis generated by some bilinear mapping t(·;·). It is considered the vector-valued class Lp(X) := Lp(J; X), 1 ≤ p < +∞, where J = [−π, π] and X is a Banach space with the UMD property, and it is proven that the classical system of exponents {eint}n∈ℤ forms a t-basis for Lp(X), 1 < p < +∞. Using this fact, the Hardy vector classes nHp±(X), 1 < p < +∞, different from the classical ones, are defined, and an equivalent definition of these classes is given and some of their properties are studied. In addition, the concept of t-Riesz property of a system of exponentials is introduced in Lp(X), 1 < p < +∞, and it is proved that this system has the t-Riesz property. A new method is given for establishing the Plemelj–Sokhotski formulas for X-valued Cauchy type integrals when X has the UMD property. An abstract analogue of the “1/4-Kadets” theorem is obtained for …

Michigan Tech Publications
It is unclear how plants respond to increasing temperatures. Leaf heat tolerance (LHT) is often at its upper limit in tropical forests, suggesting that climate change might negatively impact these forests. We hypothesized that intraspecific variation in LHT might be associated with changes in the soil microbiome, which might also respond to climate. We hypothesized that warming would increase LHT through changes in the soil microbiome: we combined an in situ tropical warming experiment with a shade house experiment in Puerto Rico. The shade house experiment consisted of growing seedlings of Guarea guidonia, a dominant forest species, under different soil …

USM Faculty Teaching Symposium
I started teaching ELE 452 Antennas course for engineering undergraduates in the spring of 2022. As a strong advocate of active learning techniques, I was incorporating antenna simulations using a software called ANSYS-HFSS. HFSS has a lot of moving parts hence I needed a method to make sure the students follow the steps correctly, so I created worksheets with step-by-step instructions. Since I put a lot of time and effort into creating these worksheets, I published those as an open source digital collection via the USM Libraries. Currently, the readership of these worksheets is almost 4000 worldwide.

Exploring The Relationship Of Program Type On Multilingual Learners Students’ English Growth And Promotion In Secondary School, Simone M. Wilkinson
Exploring The Relationship Of Program Type On Multilingual Learners Students’ English Growth And Promotion In Secondary School, Simone M. Wilkinson
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study explores the relationships between tenure as Multilingual Learners (MLs), English proficiency, academic performance, and promotion among middle and high school students. This study is grounded in Bourdieu’s (1967, 2018) theory, which emphasizes that schools perpetuate cultural norms by limiting ML’s language access and post-secondary success. Also informed by Krashen’s (1982, 1985, 2003) theory of Input Hypothesis, this study investigates how meaningful interaction is key for language learning. The primary research questions explore: (1) Is there a relationship between students’ tenure as a ML, English proficiency, and promotion through secondary school? (2) Is the EL program type for MLs …

Recent trends of intense forest fires in the Korean Peninsula have increased concerns about more extreme burning in the future under a warming climate. Accurate and reliable fire weather information has become more critical to reduce the risk of forest-related disasters over complex terrain. In this study, two parameterizations reflecting complex topographic effects were implemented in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The model performance was evaluated over the mountainous region in Gangwon-do, South Korea’s most significant forest area. The simulation results of the wildfire case in 2019 show that subgrid-scale orographic parameterization considerably improves model performance regarding wind …

Camaraderie Or Commodity: An Examination Of The Human Connection To The Land, Amelia Hong
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper addresses the role of land in the United States by examining it as both a commodity and a spiritual being. The emphasis on profit and productivity in the United States agricultural industry insists that land be viewed as a commodity, skewing and influencing citizens’ relationships with nature. Agribusiness, or commercial farming, is a leading source of desertification and land degradation in the United States. This paper seeks to understand the necessity of a breadth of spiritual and philosophical knowledge when writing environmental policy, especially regarding commercial agriculture. Chapter One provides quantitative information on the effects of uncontrolled Agribusiness …

Extending The Bridge Connecting Chiral Lagrangians And Qcd Gaussian Sum Rules For Low-Energy Hadronic Physics, Amir H. Fariborz, Jason N.E. Ho, T. G. Steele
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
It has previously been demonstrated that the mesonic fields in chiral Lagrangians can be related to the quark-level operators of QCD sum-rules via energy-independent (constant) scale factor matrices constrained by chiral symmetry. This leads to universal scale factors for each type of chiral nonet related to quark-antiquark (𝑞¯𝑞) operators and four-quark (𝑞𝑞¯𝑞¯𝑞) operators. Motivated by these successful demonstrations of scale-factor universality for the 𝐾*0 isodoublet and 𝑎0 isotriplet scalar mesons, a revised Gaussian QCD sum rule methodology is developed that enables the extension to higher-dimensional isospin sectors, including the possibility of mixing with glueball components. Moreover, to extract nonperturbative information …

Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Quaternary carbonate strandplains serve as archives of land–sea interaction, including the impacts of storms and tsunamis. Incipient lithification, especially of compound beach/dune ridges within the action zone of salt spray, presents challenges to geological research, which is often limited to exposures. This study combines aerial image analysis with geophysical datasets to assess the morphostratigraphy and internal structure of the Freedom Beach Strandplain along southern Eleuthera Island, The Bahamas. Color-intensity analysis of field photographs and satellite images revealed general patterns that can be used to distinguish between areas with different grayscale parameters (sand-covered surfaces, lithified ridges, vegetation, etc.). Cross-shore (dip-section) high-resolution …

Algorithms To Estimate Contours: Two Applications Of Analytical Tools In Differential Geometry And Topology, Mohammad Abirul Islam
Algorithms To Estimate Contours: Two Applications Of Analytical Tools In Differential Geometry And Topology, Mohammad Abirul Islam
Computer Science ETDs
We develop distributed robotics algorithms with analytical tools needed to define and analyze angle turned and distance traversed by robots executing geometric algorithms. We then use these analytical tools to obtain information, via sensor measurements, about an a priori unknown surface. Our contributions are threefold. First, we develop the Sketch Algorithm, which estimates the boundary of any unknown contour and is asymptotically optimal in terms of distance traversed and angle turned. Second, we present experimental field work that validates the Sketch Algorithm. Finally, we propose an approach to find multiple sources of a surface with potential applications to approximate that …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The Western U.S. is experiencing significant changes in its hydrological dynamics, marked by increased variability and rapid “whiplash” shifts between extreme drought and flood conditions. This study quantified these changes using a customized hydrological water year index, which correlated better with surface water storage in the basins than other drought/wetness indicators. Application of the index revealed heightened hydrological extremes and whiplash events post-2015 in all Western U.S. basins, with nearly 72% of stations facing critically dry conditions in 2021 and over 54% experiencing extreme wet conditions in 2023. Future projections indicate a decline of 8.5%–13.2% in non-extreme water year types …
