Shilla Growth Guidance System (Sggs) Instrumentation With Pelvic Foundation (Sggs) For Severe Neuromuscular Spine Deformity. Does It Work?, Hannah Geoffroy, Richard Schwend
Research Days
This study evaluates the use of the Shilla Growth Guidance System (SGGS) with a pelvic foundation for treating severe neuromuscular scoliosis in young children. The primary outcomes include revision surgery and complication rates. In a 21-patient cohort (mean age 5.3 years, follow-up 10 years), 57% required only one surgery, while 43% needed revisions. The complication rate was 38%, with a 29% deep infection rate. The procedure improved spinal alignment and growth but carried significant risks. SGGS with pelvic fixation may reduce the need for repeated surgeries in this complex patient population.

Effect Of Response Bias On Threshold Estimates In Confounded N-Alternative Optional Choice Experiments, James J. Blaha, Benjamin T. Backus, Thaddeus B. Czuba
MODVIS Workshop
Three modifications of the familiar 2-AFC task can be useful when collecting data to estimate sensory thresholds from unpracticed participants: (1) Make responding optional, which relieves the participant from having to guess when they are uncertain; (2) Provide N>2 alternatives, which reduces the number of trials to estimate threshold; and (3) Confound the alternatives with an independent variable, for example by having participants choose visual field locations as alternatives when measuring threshold separately at each visual field location, which reduces the number of trials through multiplexing. The N-alternative optional-choice experiment (N-AOC) and its confounded variant have not been studied …

Obstetric Violence Awareness And Advocacy: Identifying Gender Based Violence In Maternity, Lillian E. Shaw
Spectra Undergraduate Research Journal
Recent trends of the excess of medical intervention during childbirth, particularly in uncomplicated births, along with an alarming spread of coercive and abusive practices towards women during childbirth requires immediate attention. This paper serves to address and bring awareness to the existence and extent of a form of gender-based violence, referred to as obstetric violence. The following in-depth literature review of 25 publications explores obstetric violence from various perspectives. In the discussion, I define the concept of obstetric violence and its forms of occurrence in care, examine conceptions and institutions which aid in the maintenance of the issue, suggest strategies …

Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit
Background
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) significantly reduces the risk of contracting HIV:
- Reduces risk from sexual contact by 99%
- Reduces risk from injection drug use by at least 74%
Despite its effectiveness, PrEP is underutilized in the USA.
- In 2019, an estimated 224,000 Americans received a prescription for PrEP despite 1.1 million people having indications for PrEP.
- Lack of provider knowledge surrounding PrEP clinical guidelines is a common reason for underutilization.

Canine reproductive physiology is unique, with oocytes ovulated at an immature stage and completing meiosis within the oviduct. This study investigated protein expression in oviductal secretions from the ampulla and isthmus during oocyte maturation in dogs. Six anestrous female dogs were induced to eestrus using 4.7 mg deslorelin implants, followed by ovariohysterectomy at various time points. Samples were categorized into four groups (n=3 per group) based on oviductal region, histological confirmation, and oocyte maturation status. Proteomic analysis revealed regionspecific protein expression changes linked to oocyte maturation. In the ampulla, PRRG4, RCSD1, and UNC13C were downregulated, while CFAP54, ACLY, and MCOLN1 …

Integrating Addiction Counseling Competencies Into Cacrep’S Foundational Curriculum: Addressing Gaps In Pedagogy, Stephanie Robinson, Whitney P. Akers, Jeffrey M. Warren
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Professional counselors frequently provide direct and indirect addiction counseling services with relatively little addiction-specific education and training. This lack of training results in counselors delivering services for which they are not adequately prepared. This article explores the current state of training and credentialing of addiction counselors, the addiction-specific gaps that currently exist in CACREP’s foundational curriculum, and the duty accredited programs have to ensure counseling students are trained to provide care to all who seek treatment. A conceptual model for integrating culturally responsive addiction-specific education into CACREP’s foundational curriculum and a hypothetical timeline for implementation are provided. We discuss the …

Photometric Display Content Compensation For Near-Eye Optical See-Through Displays, Haley Adams, Alexandra Boehm
Defensive Publications Series
Displaying content on OST devices is difficult because the digital content is overlaid on the real-world environment, which can have dynamic and non-uniform lighting and backgrounds. This can make the displayed content appear washed out, transparent, or invisible, especially in bright environments. This disclosure describes the use of a camera sensor on a head-mounted device to capture an image of the real-world background in the user's field of view and using the image to calculate the non-uniformity of the background. Photometric compensation is applied to the display content to correct the perceived non-uniformities. The described techniques improve the perceived uniformity …

Langston Hughes And The “Afro-American Narrative” Tradition, Paul Haynes
Theses and Dissertations
After introducing Langston Hughes and defining Robert B. Stepto’s “Afro-American narrative” tradition, Chapter One presents a biography of Hughes from his birth in 1902 until he came under the patronage of Charlotte Osgood Mason in 1927. Chapter One also addresses the aesthetic expectations of the Harlem Renaissance and the extent to which Hughes either met or failed to meet those expectations. Chapter Two presents a reading of Not without Laughter as an integrated narrative, addressing how Hughes’s authenticating strategies and Mason’s authenticating devices evenly control the novel. Chapter Three presents a reading of Hughes’s short-story cycle, The Ways of White …
Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod
Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod
Catholic University Law Review
Where do children come from? The source of childhood—either nature or political will—is a matter not merely of chronology but of authority. Whoever makes children gets to define childhood. Legal childhood is one type of legal personhood. Legal personhood matters because legal persons bear legal rights and duties. Rights and duties direct how we act toward each other. Thus, our ideas about how persons come to be, who counts as a person, and how persons are defined in law determine in large part how we act toward persons, both other persons and ourselves.
A legal person is an artifact of …

The Right To Repair Medical Devices: A Right To Patient Needs, Shaheer Hashmi
The Right To Repair Medical Devices: A Right To Patient Needs, Shaheer Hashmi
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The laws governing the repair of medical devices, most notably §1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), place unnecessary and harmful restrictions on healthcare access in the United States. As hospitals increasingly rely on complex medical technologies, manufacturers have relied on anti-circumvention laws to block independent and in-house repairs, effectively monopolizing the repair market. As a result, our current system is one that delays treatment, inflates costs, and leaves healthcare providers and consumers with fewer options during times of crisis and routine care alike. Drawing on legal analysis, policy critique, and lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, this article shows …

Prosodic Pitch And Intensity Patterns In People With Moderate Broca's Aphasia, Juliana Pickard
Theses and Dissertations
People with aphasia (PWA) experience deficits in utilizing prosody, which drastically impacts their communicative effectiveness. The lack of prosody in people with aphasia may alter their ability to nurture meaningful relationships, advance educational and work opportunities, and participate in community activities. This study acoustically evaluates the prosodic characteristics of speech produced by individuals with non-fluent aphasia to better understand how to accurately assess and more effectively treat communication difficulties in PWA. Recorded speech samples derived from a Cinderella story retell from 16 individuals with moderate Broca's aphasia and 16 age-matched controls were acoustically analyzed in this study. The recordings were …

A Theory-Based Examination Of Factors Influencing Caregivers’ Intentions To Disclose Sickle Cell Trait Status To Their Children, Christine A. Chaba
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Sickle cell trait (SCT), the heterozygous form of sickle cell disease, has significant implications for health and reproductive decision-making. Timely disclosure of SCT status to children by their caregivers is critical for promoting genetic awareness and supporting informed reproductive choices. However, many caregivers delay or avoid this conversation. This study examined the psychosocial and behavioral factors influencing caregivers’ intentions to disclose SCT status to their children, guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Theory of Regret Regulation. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 78 caregivers of Children with SCT, who completed an online survey. The study addressed …

Perspectives Of Clients And Counselors Regarding Premature Dropout And Unsuccessful Long-Term Therapy: Similarities And Differences In Perspectives, Danilo Salli
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Whether it manifests as premature dropout from therapy or unsuccessful long-term treatment, psychotherapy does not work for everybody who engages in it. The current paper aimed to synthesize and compare information regarding premature dropout and treatment failure from the perspectives of the two parties who participate in psychotherapeutic treatment: therapists and clients. Eight main studies were used in the literature review, each focusing on either/both therapist’s and/or client’s perspectives of the reasons for premature dropout or treatment failure. The current paper concluded that communication between therapists and clients is key to reducing unsatisfactory results in psychotherapy and presented a list …

Connection Over Control: A Radically Open-Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Based Counseling Group For Avoidantly Attached College Students, Tara Pollnitz
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Attachment avoidance is marked by a deep-seated mistrust of others, excessive self-reliance, and suppression of attachment needs. Feelings of boredom, disengagement, and uncertainty regarding how to proceed with treatment are common among practitioners treating avoidant clients. In this paper, the author examines attachment avoidance as a clinical concern, presents a conceptualization of attachment avoidance as a process related to emotional overcontrol, and explores the potential impact of intervention during college to provide a rationale for a counseling group to address attachment avoidance through radically open dialectical behavior therapy. Subsequently, the origins and theoretical foundation of radically open dialectical behavior therapy …

Mothers Supporting Mothers: A Psychotherapy Group For Postpartum Mothers Struggling With Substance Use, Brittany Hook
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
One topic that is not talked about enough is women’s health and more specifically postpartum women. This is apparent especially when it comes to postpartum care and the diverse experiences women face. The silence around postpartum women’s experiences can be frightening at times. The mental health of postpartum mothers can be overlooked and can lead to concerns of suicide ideation, increase substance use and a decrease in overall wellbeing. When substance abuse is in the picture for postpartum women, a treatment option that can be effective is group counseling. An evidence-based modality that works off the humanistic theory is motivational …

Background Opioid overdose fatalities are a major public health concern with significant cost implications. Naloxone effectively reverses opioid overdose symptoms and prevents fatalities, yet many healthcare professionals lack the confidence and knowledge to administer it. This knowledge gap delays efforts to combat opioid overdose. Local Problem Opioid-related fatalities are among the leading causes of preventable deaths. In a northern California county, opioid overdose deaths increased by 20% from 2018 to 2021, with 48 fatalities in 2021. A needs assessment revealed that healthcare providers at a reentry program in that county had limited knowledge and confidence in using naloxone. Methods A …

Conversations And Educating People About Traumatic Experiences, Cynthia Ortega
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This Capstone project focused on writing a book for young adults about the different traumas people experience, including generational trauma, domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental health struggles. These difficult topics were often discussed, yet the goal was to encourage open conversations that helped individuals recognize trauma and learn about available resources. My mother, Theresa Preciado, experienced all these challenges, and sharing her story aimed to inspire others to speak up. Her journey reflected the struggles of many, offering relatability, education, and understanding. Readers were made aware that the book included emotionally heavy content. At its core, this project sought …
