A Dynamics Viewpoint On The Approximation Capabilities Of Infinite-Depth Neural Networks, Andreus Brammer
A Dynamics Viewpoint On The Approximation Capabilities Of Infinite-Depth Neural Networks, Andreus Brammer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Neural Ordinary differential equations(Neural ODEs) provide a continuous-time framework for learning dynamical systems by representing the evolution of a state variable through a parameterized differential equation. While most existing methods rely on numerical time stepping methods during training such as RK4, this work investigates an alternate spectral framework where both the solution and the time-dependent network parameters are represented by global polynomial expressions.
Two methods are employed: the first uses Taylor series representations, and the second approach uses Chebyshev polynomial expansions together with fast spectral transforms and efficient polynomial multiplication techniques. In each formulation, the Neural ODE is transformed into …

Autoimmune diseases substantially increase the risk of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death through shared immune-mediated mechanisms. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, autoantibodies, and progressive myocardial fibrosis disrupt ion channel function, impair conduction, and create re-entrant substrates. Across systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and systemic sclerosis (SSc), these pathways manifest as atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, conduction disease, and heightened arrhythmic mortality. Anti Ro/SSA antibodies, in particular, contribute to QT prolongation and atrioventricular (AV) block, while cytokines such as TNF α, IL 1β, and IL 6 remodel electrophysiological properties and promote fibrosis. Advanced cardiac imaging, especially cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), …
War Profits Or Safe Havens? Defence Etfs During The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Nikita Sharma
War Profits Or Safe Havens? Defence Etfs During The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Nikita Sharma
Critical Letters in Economics & Finance
Financial markets have traditionally relied on assets such as gold to protect investment portfolios during periods of uncertainty. However, prolonged geopolitical conflicts create economic conditions that affect industries in fundamentally different ways, raising the possibility that certain sector-specific investments may also exhibit defensive characteristics. This paper investigates whether the iShares US Aerospace & Defence ETF (ITA) exhibits safe-haven behaviour during the Russia-Ukraine war, offering an alternative perspective on conventional safe-haven assets and war profit-making. The results indicate that ITA did not meet all the criteria for a conventional safe-haven. Nevertheless, it displayed greater resilience than the broader equity market, maintaining …

Quantum computing is inherently abstract and often counterintuitive from the perspective of classical physics. For learners to develop a deeper understanding, it is useful to study a practical example thoroughly, from its mathematical formalism to quantum circuit implementation. Shor's algorithm for period finding, which can then be used for prime factorization, is demonstrated in this paper due to its practical significance. While numerous publications on Shor's algorithm exist, they tend to focus on advanced theoretical analysis, specific implementation details, or narrowly defined research aspects; consequently, they are often not well-suited for educational purposes for beginning and intermediate learners. This paper …

The inner surface pressure of an axisymmetric inlet/isolator model was measured using anodized-aluminum pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) viewing through cast acrylic. Temperaturesensitive paint was utilized to correct for the PSP’s temperature sensitivity. The model was tested under Mach 5.7 flow at 𝑹𝒆 = 7.1 ×106 /m under conventional noise conditions. Transverse jet injection with jet-to-inlet mass-flow ratios up to 0.8 was used to induce unstart in the inlet/isolator. Background-oriented schlieren visualization of the inlet shocks was collected simultaneously with the PSP to determine when the inlet unstarted. Computational fluid dynamics results were used to determine off-wall flow structures and quantify approach …
Getting Tolkien Right: Middle-Earth In The National Review, Craig Franson
Getting Tolkien Right: Middle-Earth In The National Review, Craig Franson
Journal of Tolkien Research
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings entered Anglo-American popular consciousness as an emblem of 1960s, leftist youth culture, but the novel slowly gained currency across the political right. In the U.S., conservative intellectuals published book notes and articles on Tolkien’s writing in their movement’s leading journals, gradually habituating their readers to seeing the once-obscure English fantasist as a canonical writer for American conservatism. The most prominent of these journals was William F. Buckley’s National Review, which recurrently promoted Tolkien’s writing and offered a distinctly partisan interpretation of his texts. This paper offers a partial outline of the conservative …

Leveraging Compliance With Infection Control Policies Among Healthcare Workers In A Multi-Hospital System, Lauren R. Mcconnell, Ethan C. Anthony, Lauren R. Selent
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Despite the national push, healthcare workers compliance with Standard Precautions (SP) and Transmission-Based Precautions show significant gaps in both understanding and implementation.1 The conundrum of hospital nosocomial infections obfuscates the threat to patient safety.2 The purpose of this study is to examine staff compliance with infection control policies by infection type within a multi-hospital system. A quantitative, causal-comparative design was used to identify differences across groups. The independent variable was the ‘type of isolation’ assigned by the infection control practitioner. The dependent variables were staff adherence to the infection control policies including: 1) Isolation sign on patient’s door ; 2) …

Leveraging The Patient Experience: Satisfaction With Hospital Food Services, Daniel Hansen Harwin, Lauren Rae Selent, Lauren Reilly Mcconnel
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Patients want and expect better health care services than they did in the past. Within hospitals, consumption of proper nutrition is vital. Patients and nutrition share a unique relationship that is essential for health, this connection is complex including important variables such as food quality. This study examined how patients’ satisfaction with food differed by clinical units. Initially, a MANOVA was conducted. For significant findings ANOVA contrasts were conducted on each dependent variable. The independent variables are the individual clinical units to which the patients were admitted. The dependent variables were the patients' responses to survey questions including: 1) There …
Business Incubation And The Role That It Plays In The Future Economic And Financial Success Of Small Island Developing States, Warren Watkins
Business Incubation And The Role That It Plays In The Future Economic And Financial Success Of Small Island Developing States, Warren Watkins
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face a unique blend of economic vulnerabilities and untapped potential, often stemming from their heavy reliance on tourism and limited diversification. This thesis explores how business incubation can serve as a strategic mechanism for fostering sustainable economic and financial growth within these nations. Through a comparative analysis of established models in countries such as Singapore, Japan, and Chile, alongside emerging initiatives in Caribbean SIDS, this research identifies the pathways through which foreign investment, education, and technology can jointly stimulate entrepreneurial development. Findings indicate that while foreign partnerships remain essential in the early stages of incubation, …
Presidential Clemency, Criminal Contempt, And The Structural Limits Of Judicial Authority: Reconsidering Ex Parte Grossman In The Modern Separation-Of-Powers Framework, Titan L. Sanchez
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Ex parte Grossman (1925) was a landmark Supreme Court case regarding the presidential pardon power granted by the Pardon Clause in Article II of the United States Constitution and whether it extends to criminal contempt of court. The Court ruled that the Clause’s phrasing, “offenses against the United States…” does not ultimately exclude criminal contempt. Among several justifications, Chief Justice Taft included a historical overview and partially relied on English common-law history, as well as monarchical practice, to interpret the scope and help justify the use of the presidential pardon power. This partial analysis relies on the assumption that constitutional …

Maternal Feedback Over Time: Associations With Youth Perceptions Of Autonomy Support, Andrew Middleton, Genevieve Martin, Alyssa Lazanowski, Wendy M. Rote
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Parental feedback and direction are often interpreted as controlling; however, developmental theory suggests these behaviors may function as autonomy support when they are responsive to youths’ need. Drawing on self-determination theory, autonomy supportive parenting involves the promotion of volitional functioning through behaviors that align with youths’ perspectives and fosters independent problem-making and a sense of choice (McCurdy et al., 2020; Zhang & Whitebread, 2021). Similarly, scaffolding frameworks emphasize that provisions of parental support (e.g., feedback, direction, and emotional encouragement) contingent on the child’s task performance can promote higher levels of independent functioning (Mermelshtine, 2017; Salonen et al., 2007). The present …
Localization And Function Of Tgsfa2 During Tachyzoite Division In Toxoplasma Gondii, Tom Goro
Localization And Function Of Tgsfa2 During Tachyzoite Division In Toxoplasma Gondii, Tom Goro
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite infecting 30% of the global population. During host cell invasion, new parasites are formed through a budding process that partitions nuclei and organelles into daughters through a specialized form of division is known as endodyogeny. It involves closed mitosis, a single round of DNA replication, and coordinated organelle assembly within the mother cell. In cell division, centrosomes duplicate and serve as a central point for the reorganization of cytoskeletal structures known as microtubule organizing centers (MTOC). In typical eukaryotic cell division, centrosomes duplicate and migrate to opposite poles forming bipolar mitotic spindles required …

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) is characterized by attention-seeking, emotionality, and dramatic or seductive behaviors. Individuals with HPD often feel discomfort when not the center of attention and may use exaggerated affect to gain approval. While gender differences in diagnosis and presentation have been reported, the influence of trauma and comorbid conditions - such as alcohol use disorder (AUD) and eating disorders (EDs) - remains underexplored. A literature review was conducted using PubMed with search terms including HPD, trauma, substance use, and eating disorders. A total of 157 articles were identified. Studies not addressing at least two relevant domains were excluded. …

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental health condition categorized into grandiose and vulnerable narcissism. Current guidelines used to evaluate NPD include the ICD-11 and DSM, however, the accuracy of their results is arguable. NPD presents differently in males vs. females which may lead to misdiagnosis. This study reviews how clinician judgements are influenced by the gender-based differences in the presentation of narcissistic traits while using current diagnostic guidelines, aiming to understand the misdiagnosis of NPD when the traits are less grandiose. A literature review was conducted through PubMed using the search terms: (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder” OR narcissism) AND (“gender differences” …

The usage of generative A.I. increases day by day as the technology improves and remains accessible to the public. Inside academia, many argue the technology will help students and scholars to write papers quicker, to improve their writing, and/or to organize data quicker. However, there is the issue of if A.I. really improves workflow, and if it can correctly be used in the realm of publishing without impeding on the merit of their research and without insulting readers and editors alike, as is explained in “When and how to disclose AI use in academic publishing: AMEE Guide No.192” (L. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy induces durable responses in a subset of patients with metastatic melanoma, yet determinants of efficacy remain incompletely defined. We performed integrated immunophenotypic and spatial transcriptomic profiling of TIL infusion products and matched tumor microenvironments (TMEs) from patients treated in early-phase TIL-based trials at Moffitt Cancer Center. The objective response rate was 36%, with a median progression-free survival (PFS) of 10 months. Responders exhibited infusion products enriched for CD8⁺ T cells, stem-like memory (TSCM) CD8⁺ subsets, and LAG3⁺CD8⁺ T cells, along with enhanced TIL persistence in the periphery. Notably, prior exposure to immune checkpoint was associated with …
Sleep Restriction And Its Affects On Mood, April M. Rummery Lamb
Sleep Restriction And Its Affects On Mood, April M. Rummery Lamb
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Sleep plays a fundamental role in the human body being able to function effectively, in particular it plays an essential role in mood regulation. Previous research on sleep and mood has found that there is a correlation between receiving an inadequate amount of sleep and having a negative mood. However, the current field has mostly looked at the relationship between disordered sleep and mood disorders as opposed to everyday sleep patterns and daily mood. The present study aims to look at how sleep restrictions which occur naturally (not caused by sleep disorders such as insomnia) effect daily mood. To conduct …

Defensive Publications Series
Current approaches for applying color personalization to images captured by a camera are irreversible, require large amounts of storage, do not scale well across lighting conditions, and need intensive manual tuning. This disclosure describes a flexible, efficient, reversible, and scalable alternative approach to support revertible color personalization for images captured with a camera. The modular approach involves applying color personalization in a dedicated stage that is decoupled from and follows regular color processing operations. The color personalization module includes three primary components: a 3x3 matrix block for tone adjustments, a color lookup table (CLUT) block for specific personalization styles, and …

System And Method For On-Demand Generation Of Physics-Grounded, Verification-Gated, Competency-Driven Multi-Modal Technical-Training Content, Michael R. Glass
Defensive Publications Series
A system generates interactive technical-training artifacts — including circuit/equipment simulations, technical diagrams, "see-inside" equivalent-circuit views, injected fault scenarios, and step-by-step or narrated explanations — on demand and adapted to a learner's competency state. Unlike systems that script simulation behavior or that emit generative-model output without a correctness guarantee, the disclosed system computes artifact behavior from a numerical physics solver so behavior emerges from the solve, and passes every generated artifact through a verification gate that checks it against that same solved ground-truth model and rejects or regenerates any artifact inconsistent with the model before it is delivered. A …

Focused Retention: Goal-Conditioned Switched Decay As An Active Anti-Decay Force In Agent Memory (Loci), Arko Sanyal
Defensive Publications Series
Memory systems decay passively: strength falls with time, lifted only by rehearsal. We propose a memory spectrum in which decay is goal-conditioned: while a commitment is open, the item decays with a very long half-life (it holds, though it is not frozen); the moment the commitment resolves, decay switches to fast and the trace collapses. Focus, on this account, is not slower forgetting but a regime switch controlled by the fate of a goal. The model contributes: (1) a switched-decay retention law; (2) a release taxonomy — fulfilled, re-clamped, relinquished, nullified, abandoned — in which rejection is a choice node, …

A Separate, Fast-Decaying Memory Spectrum For A System's Own Thoughts, With Reflection-Gated Crystallization (Loci), Arko Sanyal
Defensive Publications Series
Memory systems for interactive agents store observations — facts about the world and the user. We argue the system's own reasoning traces ("thoughts") require a structurally different store: a separate spectrum with its own much faster decay law, and a gated bridge to long-term memory that only a confirmed outcome can open. A thought's retention follows an exponential decay with a roughly 4-hour half-life; cold thoughts are pruned. A thought is crystallized into a durable fact only when a later, externally-produced outcome confirms it — unconfirmed reasoning is never allowed to become long-term "truth," which makes the gate an anti-hallucination …
Forecasting Affective State From Interaction Streams: A Closed Loop With Heat-Decay Memory, Label-Free Mood Estimation, And Trajectory-Based Crisis/Venting Separation (Loci R+E), Arko Sanyal
Defensive Publications Series
We ask whether a person's near-future affective state can be forecast from the interaction stream alone — no self-report, no labeled emotions. We describe a closed forecasting loop that converts an interaction stream into a bounded affect estimate and projects it forward. The loop decomposes interaction into parallel streams: a heat-decay salience stream (recurrence-weighted, exponentially decaying), an exact-value stream, a mood stream derived from reconstruction error against the person's own adaptive percentile band (arousal, valence, coherence — no labeled emotions), a reflection stream, and a forecast stream. On a held-out 24-hour criterion the loop reaches 74% mood-forecast accuracy versus 48% …

Building Legal Dwelling: An Existential Analysis Of The Phenomenon Of Law, Thomas Gambino
Graduate Student Research Symposium
This paper explores the necessity of law for the existence of Dasein in the thinking of Martin Heidegger. It begins by analyzing our everyday experience of the phenomenon of law, concluding that the being of law reveals itself to us, at different times, as present-at-hand and ready-to-hand. From this realization, it grounds the being of law in the being of Dasein, describing law essentially as Dasein’s own existence, projected into the world and shown back to it as a seemingly independent phenomenon. Finally, it characterizes this projection as an act of building and concludes that Dasein dwells in the law …

Best Practices For Classroom Seating Arrangements: A Narrative Literature Review, Sophia M. Williams
Graduate Student Research Symposium
Every K-12 classroom has a unique dynamic produced by students and managed by its teachers. The relationships between peers, as well as the relationships between students and their teacher play an integral role in how students work and behave each day. An important aspect of the classroom dynamic that teachers’ control is seating arrangements. Indeed, extant research has debated on the best practice for seating arrangements in classrooms to create optimal learning environments that benefit both pupil and teacher. Some studies suggest that students work better when they are working with people that they have positive relationships with. Contrarily, others …

Dual-Waste Integration For Geotechnical Improvement: Silica Fume And Eggshell Ash In Kaolin Soil Stabilization, Ng Jun Shen, Muzamir Hasan, Siti Sarah Eliyun, Md. Ikramul Hoque, Mohamad Afiq Jazrin Mohamad Sidek
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
This study reveals the potential substitution of silica fume and eggshell ash in the technique of soil stabilization, varying across distinct proportions in the modification of geotechnical parameters. The untreated kaolinitic soil which has low soil bearing capacity in nature is frequently reflected in its mechanical instability, for instance, soil settlement and extreme compressibility. By associating the industrial and agricultural material, it is potentially to resolve the above-mentioned issues with explicit designs. A number of laboratory approaches have been implemented in the assessment of basic geotechnical properties, including grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, proctor properties, and shear strength …
