Strategies For Migrating Data Warehouses To Data Lakehouses Using Public Cloud Computing, Danny Robert Hermanus
Strategies For Migrating Data Warehouses To Data Lakehouses Using Public Cloud Computing, Danny Robert Hermanus
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The exponential growth of big data—characterized by high volume, velocity, and variety—has overwhelmed the capacity of traditional data warehouses, making it difficult to deliver timely and actionable insights. This problem is critical for IT professionals in large organizations, who face the absence of robust, evidence-based migration strategies and rely on efficient data infrastructure to maintain competitive performance and support strategic decision-making. Anchored in the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic study was to explore strategies employed by large organizations to migrate data warehouses to data lakehouses. The study involved semistructured interviews with six IT professionals from California-based …

Functional connectivity (FC) analyses of intracranial EEG (iEEG) signals can potentially improve the mapping of epileptic networks in drug-resistant focal epilepsy. However, it remains unclear whether FC-based metrics provide additional value beyond established epilepsy biomarkers such as epileptic spikes and high-frequency oscillations (HFOs). Using interictal iEEG data from 26 patients, we estimated FC across eight frequency bands (4–290 Hz) using amplitude envelope correlation (AEC) and phase locking value (PLV). From the resulting FC-matrices, we estimated two graph metrics each to derive 32 FC-based features. We also extracted features related to spikes, HFOs, and power spectral densities (PSD). A trained support …

New-onset diabetes (NOD) has emerged as a potential early indicator of pancreatic cancer (PC), necessitating a refined clinical approach for risk assessment and early detection. This study discusses critical gaps in understanding the NOD-PC relationship and proposes a multifaceted approach to enhance early detection and risk assessment. We present a comprehensive clinical workflow for evaluating NOD patients, incorporating biomarker discovery, genetic screening, and AI-driven imaging to improve PC risk stratification. While existing models consider metabolic factors, they often overlook germline genetic predispositions that may influence disease development. We propose integrating germline genetic testing to identify individuals carrying pathogenic variants in …

N 6-Methyladenosine (m6A), the most abundant modification in eukaryotic messenger RNAs (mRNAs), has also been found at a low level in bacterial mRNAs. However, enzyme(s) that introduce m6A modification on mRNAs in bacteria remain elusive. In this work, we combine deep-sequencing approaches that identify m6A sites with in vitro biochemical studies to identify putative m6A methyltransferases that would modify Escherichia coli mRNAs. We tested four uncharacterized candidates predicted to encode proteins with putative methyltransferase domains, whose deletion decreased the m6A level. However, in vitro analysis with the purified putative methyltransferases revealed that none of them installs m6A on mRNA. Exposure …

Early widowhood is characterized by chronic stress and is associated with a higher risk of incident depression and cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Peripheral inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder and atherothrombosis and may represent a common mechanism underlying widow(er)'s elevated risk for both health conditions. Chronic psychological stress sensitizes the release of proinflammatory cytokines during the peripheral stress response. The present study examined whether recent spousal bereavement enhances the inflammatory response to an acute, psychological stressor. Recently widowed older adults (n = 143) and non-widowed controls (n = 69) participated in a quasi-experimental study, during which …

Subcortical brain structures such as the subthalamic nucleus or the thalamus are involved in regulating motor and cognitive behavior. However, their contribution to perceptual consciousness remains unclear, due to the inherent difficulties of recording subcortical neuronal activity in humans. Here, we asked neurological patients undergoing surgery for deep brain stimulation to detect weak vibrotactile stimuli applied on their hand while recording single neuron activity from the tip of a microelectrode. We isolated putative single neurons in the subthalamic nucleus and thalamus. A significant proportion of neurons modulated their activity while participants were expecting a stimulus. We found that the firing …

Innovative Algorithmic Approaches In Revenue Management, Yukai Huang
Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I design and analyze tractable algorithms for sequential decision-making problems under uncertainty, with various applications in revenue management. More specifically, I focus on innovative business strategies that have emerged in recent years, with applications ranging from reusable product sales, opaque selling, and maritime shipping. For each application, I identify the unique operational requirements, highlight the complexity of the underlying decision problems, and develop tractable solution approaches. I also provide both theoretical analysis and numerical evaluation to evaluate the performance of the proposed policies. In the first chapter, I study the joint inventory and online assortment problem, wherein …

Essays In Supply Behavior In Sharing Economy, Chong Bo Wang
Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation investigates supply behavior within the sharing economy, focusing specifically on the ride-sharing market. Leveraging quantitative methods such as structural modeling, field experiments, and lab experiments, I examine supplier behaviors to help platforms design more effective incentives—including subsidies and strategically framed rewards—to better match supply with demand. In Chapter 1, “Using Field Experiments to Infer Cross-Side Network Effects in the Ride-Sharing Market: How Does Driver Supply Impact Rider Orders, Cancellations, and Customer Lifetime Value?”, I address the central question of how shifts in driver supply affect rider behavior. Collaborating with a leading ride-sharing platform, I implement a natural field …

Leveraging Ai For Marketing Decisions: Algorithmic Targeting And Healthcare Applications, Annie Shi
Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for making effective marketing decisions, specifically on how to measure the causal effects of targeting promotions and detecting suspicious retail buyers of opioids. In the first chapter, we propose a novel approach in measuring the true causal effects of targeting promotions. Targeting promotions on online platforms are often determined by AI algorithms, which utilize extensive customer and seller information to generate various algorithmic scores for targeting. Effective targeting, however, will lead to selection bias when evaluating the causal effects of promotions. we analyzed 2,294 promotion experiments on a major online retail platform …

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 6: Issue 1, Article 6, 2025. Efforts to promote physical activity and other health-related behaviors are more effective when resource materials are understood by a wide and diverse audience. Before our lab’s previous investigations (Thomas et al., 2024), only one study seemed to use the cloze procedure to directly test the comprehension (i.e., readability) of physical activity promotion material (Cardinal & Seidler, 1995). Thus, this rapid literature review sought to (a) determine the extent the cloze procedure has been used to study physical activity promotion material comprehension in lay adults and (b) collate …

[2025 Honorable Mention] Ice: Trauma, And The War On Immigrant Families, Brittney M. Williams
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
This paper exposes how immigration enforcement under the Trump administration’s second term has crossed the line from policy to persecution. ICE is operating like a secret police force, using fear tactics and legal loopholes to tear families apart without cause or due process. The impact is not theoretical. It is real, measurable, and devastating. Children are being taken from schools. Parents are disappearing without explanation. Communities are being pushed into silence and survival mode. This paper focuses on the trauma being inflicted, especially on immigrant youth, and the way outdated laws like the Alien Enemies Act are being twisted to …

Energy transition has a governance problem. And much of the literature fails to address this problem. That is, it discusses who should make energy transition decisions (the President, Congress, state governments, etc.). But this perspective misses the core substantive problem: how should we share the benefits and burdens of transition? Without answering this energy transition “how” question, any answer to “who” risks appearing as arbitrary decision-making. In this Article, I am the first to submit that we can solve this “how” question using the property-law doctrine of correlative rights. Energy-transition governance is what political economists call “polycentric.” It requires different …
