Single-Sided Hearing Assistance Application, Harryson Nguyen, Jp Haratani
Electrical Engineering
The product is a hearing assistance smartphone application which aims to improve the quality of life of people with single-sided hearing loss/deafness by providing them with a cheaper and more reliable alternative to medically-prescribed hearing aids. Due to development setbacks, the product instead uses open-ear earbuds. Since the earbuds are not directly inserted into the user’s ear canals, they will not obstruct the hearing of the user’s non-deaf ear, and the user will still be able to hear the sounds that come from their non-deaf side. Some users may find that Bluetooth earbuds can be quite expensive, but are ultimately …

Electrical Engineering
Over the last few years, there has been great interest in distributed antenna arrays. These arrays require each element to be precisely located and synchronized with each other in time, phase, and frequency. To this end, a drone-mounted, two-tone communication system was developed. It uses a transmit-retransmit-receive architecture, which obtains all of the necessary data required to compute and correct the phase, frequency, and time differences between each element while estimating distance. When integrated into a distributed array of drones, this two-tone communication system will be essential for reliable operation.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited disorder that affects bone and tooth mineralization, among other body systems. HPP is caused by pathogenic variants in the alkaline phosphatase-liver (ALPL) gene, which encodes tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase. One major challenge in diagnosing HPP is interpreting variant of uncertain significance (VUS), which can create uncertainty for patients and healthcare professionals, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment or incorrect diagnoses. Since February 2021, the ALPLgene variant consortium has reclassified 100 VUS using adjusted American College of Medical Genetics/Association for Molecular Pathology criteria. Of these, 11 were reclassified as pathogenic, 62 as …

Historical analogies are often employed as tools of public persuasion on security and foreign policies. While existing research points to the potential power of historical analogies on domestic audiences, it has not examined the effect of historical analogies on foreign publics. Using speeches by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after Russia’s February 2022 invasion, we investigate whether evoking salient events from the audience country’s past effectively increases popular support for aiding Ukraine. We conducted survey experiments simultaneously in four countries where Zelensky delivered speeches rich in historical analogies – United Kingdom (WWII), United States (Pearl Harbor and 9/11), Germany and Israel …

Verify All Traffic: Towards Zero-Trust In-Network Intrusion Detection Against Multipath Routing, Ziming Zhao, Zhaoxuan Li, Xiaofei Xie, Zhipeng Liu, Tingting Li, Jiongchi Yu, Fan Zhang, Binbin Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the popularity of encryption protocols, machine learning (ML)-based traffic analysis technologies have attracted widespread attention. To adapt to modern high-speed bandwidth, recent research is dedicated to advancing zero-trust intrusion detection by offloading feature extraction and model inference into the network dataplane. Especially, with the rise of programmable switches, achieving line-speed ML inference becomes promising. However, existing research only considers a single switch node as a relay to conduct evaluation. This is far from real-world deployments involving multiple switches (given that zero-trust security assumes that threats can originate from anywhere, including within the network), particularly the multipath routing phenomenon that …
Understanding Teacher Attrition In Nebraska: A Quantitative Approach Using Markov Chains And Graph Theory, Md Tahidul Islam
Understanding Teacher Attrition In Nebraska: A Quantitative Approach Using Markov Chains And Graph Theory, Md Tahidul Islam
Mathematics Theses, Dissertations, Research and Student Creative Activity
Teacher attrition is a growing concern in Nebraska, particularly in rural and high-need districts where staffing challenges are most acute. This study applies a hybrid approach combining Markov Chain modeling and Graph Theory to analyze over three decades of longitudinal employment data from the Nebraska Department of Education. A discrete-time Markov model is used to estimate transition probabilities between roles such as Teacher, Administrator, and Exit, revealing high attrition risks among early-career educators and paraprofessionals. To complement this, a directed weighted graph is constructed to examine the structural properties of role transitions using centrality, clustering, and entropy metrics. Results show …

From Human Mapping To Machine Embedding: Uncovering Key Legal Drivers And Deterrents Of Isds Filing Frequencies, Sangchul Park
Chicago Journal of International Law
International investment agreements (IIAs), while intended to prop cross-border investment, have faced persistent criticism for potentially undermining the regulatory sovereignty of developing countries. Various mechanisms have been proposed as alternatives to traditional bilateral investment treaty (BIT) models, often with the goal of curbing investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) filings. While existing research has uncovered the impact of nonlegal factors, such as macroeconomic crises, little has been done to systematically examine how legal provisions in either major model BITs or ISDS reform toolboxes influence ISDS filing patterns. To address this gap, this Article analyzes the interplay between (i) legal texts of 2,148 …
The Reign Of Cerberus: International Law And Technological Innovation, Paul B. Stephan
The Reign Of Cerberus: International Law And Technological Innovation, Paul B. Stephan
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Essay sketches an informal theory of the impact of technological change on international economics, and hence international relations expressed as international law. The theory points to a policy trilemma, something that I call Cerberus in a perhaps futile attempt at an arresting metaphor. The Essay uses the trilemma to illuminate the general trends in technology policy we see playing out in China, Europe, and the United States. It argues that we have the privilege of witnessing an ongoing natural experiment in optimal technology regulation and legal policy, with no guarantee as to which approach will prevail.
