The Law Of Armed Conflict – In The Dark, Laurie R. Blank
The Law Of Armed Conflict – In The Dark, Laurie R. Blank
Chicago Journal of International Law
In a potential future peer-on-peer or near peer conflict, the technological capabilities that are both taken for granted and a source of military superiority will be an immediate and high- value target. Global navigation and positioning systems, satellite imaging, precision guidance, instantaneous communication, and much more— the adversary will seek to shut down these capabilities. Turning off the technology, or fighting “in the dark,” presents complex operational and tactical challenges of navigation, logistics, communication, command and control, coordination, and targeting, to name just a few. However, executing military operations in such a technology-deprived environment also requires the application and implementation …
Two Terribles: A Day Without Space And Ai Enabled Synthetic Biological Weapons A Warning Order, James E. Baker
Two Terribles: A Day Without Space And Ai Enabled Synthetic Biological Weapons A Warning Order, James E. Baker
Chicago Journal of International Law
A day without space, a term used to describe the loss or destruction of America’s space assets, and the potential generation of novel biological threats using AI and synthetic biology present catastrophic and potentially existential threats to U.S. security in a way that nuclear weapons did before and continue to do so today. Yet they have not received the level of attention from national security lawyers or commentators they warrant. This article describes the threats. It describes the current and inchoate nature of the law to address these threats. And it makes initial recommendations to policymakers and lawyers about how …
Whose Truth Commission, Lehlohonolo January
Whose Truth Commission, Lehlohonolo January
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
It is often said that the victor always dictates the narrative and thus dictates how history is represented. The end of Apartheid in South Africa wasn’t a result of an outright victorious defeat of the Apartheid State together with its institutions of coercion but rather came about as a result of a culmination of a series of events. If this adage holds true, then why is it that the narrative seems to paint a picture of a victor’s perspective? This assertion is not made lightly but is no less reflective of how the facts seem to portray themselves in that …
Anonymous Communication In Quantum Networks, Anish Majumdar
Anonymous Communication In Quantum Networks, Anish Majumdar
Master’s Dissertations
In this dissertation, we explore the protocols enabling anonymous communication in quantum networks i.e. transmission of qubits from sender to receiver by creating or distributing Entangled states between them without disclosing their identities as sender or receiver to the other parties in the network. Existing methods uses classical, as well as quantum subprotocols to achieve anonymity. The Quantum sub-protocols include protocols for anonymous entanglement distribution using GHZ states, verification (not device-independent) of GHZ state that requires secure private classical channels, techniques for ϵ-anonymity(i.e. the other parties can at most guess a little ϵ amount better than a random guess about who …
From Vigilance To Veracity: Hallucination Detection, Mitigation, And Safety Enhancement In Large Language Models, Sharanya Dasgupta
From Vigilance To Veracity: Hallucination Detection, Mitigation, And Safety Enhancement In Large Language Models, Sharanya Dasgupta
Master’s Dissertations
Human cognition, driven by complex neurochemical processes, oscillates between imagination and reality and learns to self-correct whenever such subtle drifts lead to hallucinations or unsafe associations. In recent years, large language models (LLMs) have garnered widespread attention due to their adeptness at generating innovative responses to the given prompts across a multitude of domains, yet they exhibit a critical limitation: the propensity to produce factually incorrect and potentially harmful content while preserving syntactic coherence and logical structure. In this work, we hypothesize that these deficiencies in LLMs originate from their internal representational dynamics. Our observations indicate that, during passage generation, …

Enhancing Autonomous Truck Navigation In Underground Mines: A Review Of 3d Object Detection Systems, Challenges, And Future Trends, Ellen Essien, Samuel Frimpong
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Integrating autonomous haulage systems into underground mining has revolutionized safety and operational efficiency. However, deploying 3D detection systems for autonomous truck navigation in such an environment faces persistent challenges due to dust, occlusion, complex terrains, and low visibility. This affects their reliability and real-time processing. While existing reviews have discussed object detection techniques and sensor-based systems, providing valuable insights into their applications, only a few have addressed the unique underground challenges that affect 3D detection models. This review synthesizes the current advancements in 3D object detection models for underground autonomous truck navigation. It assesses deep learning algorithms, fusion techniques, multi-modal …
Technical Communication Instruction Partnership With Engineering Faculty, Ashley S. Mcguire, Michael M. Lipscomb
Technical Communication Instruction Partnership With Engineering Faculty, Ashley S. Mcguire, Michael M. Lipscomb
Libraries Professional Work
Graduate students in STEM fields are often expected to communicate – both in writing and orally – at a professional level by the time they submit their theses and dissertations. Unfortunately, many graduate students lack opportunities to learn how to do that in a STEM setting. An informal review of US programs revealed that many offer writing courses modeled on traditional composition courses, which are not necessarily directed to the needs of STEM students. Further, many of these courses provide a series of isolated learning modules with little continuity or encouragement to revise and in which technological writing assistance is …

“Grades are an essential currency of our schools. Schools, colleges and employers use grades to determine many important, and in some cases, life-altering decisions-college admission, financial aid and scholarships, athletic eligibility, promotion, retention, awards, and supports” (Feldman, 2018, p. 3). Grading is not addressed in teacher preparation programs, or within professional development during teachers’ careers; teachers have chosen their own way to grade guided by their own personal experiences, uninformed of research or best practice. Using a human centric, design-based approach, the researcher identified multiple discrepancies with grading practices among the K-12 school organization. Within the discrepancies, other issues were …

Air quality forecasting is crucial for public health, especially in rural, suburban, and developing areas lacking reliable monitoring data. Hybrid monitoring (surface, satellite, and models) offers a scalable, cost‐ effective solution for tracking pollution and trends. This work presents a machine learning model that integrates ground measurements with global model outputs assimilating satellite observations to forecast air quality. Ground measurements of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from over 60 U.S. embassies and consulates were used to calibrate global model outputs for local air quality forecasting. Multi‐channel input data was prepared using the Goddard Earth Observing System forward processing for meteorology and …
The Obviousness Paradox: Should Design And Utility Patents Play By The Same Rules?, Brooks W. Fleischmann
The Obviousness Paradox: Should Design And Utility Patents Play By The Same Rules?, Brooks W. Fleischmann
Missouri Law Review
The standard American grading system recognizes an A as the best possible grade, while an F represents failure. To achieve an A, the typical benchmark is anywhere above 90%. Falling well below this mark, any grade below 60% constitutes failure. Accordingly, a higher percentage in class equates to a better GPA. Following this same logic in the world of sports, the greatest free-throw shooter in NBA history holds the record at 91%. The greatest field goal kicker in NFL history holds the record at 89.1%. However, the highest batting average in MLB history sits at .366, or 36.6%. According to …

“[L]ebensunwertes Leben—Life Unworthy of Life.” Those words, used by the National Socialist (Nazi) Party in Germany to describe people with genetic disorders, ring throughout world history as a moral indictment of the Nazi German state and all those who collaborated with it. Unfortunately, Germany was not alone in its designation of some people as unworthy of life; the United States has also, throughout its history, given the same designation to portions of its population. From Japanese-Americans during the Second World War to people with disabilities in the era of eugenics, the American government has frequently singled out those whom it …
The Illusion Of Redemption: Examining Gubernatorial Pardons, Collateral Consequences, And The Ineligibility For Public Office In Missouri, Anna Claire Parker
The Illusion Of Redemption: Examining Gubernatorial Pardons, Collateral Consequences, And The Ineligibility For Public Office In Missouri, Anna Claire Parker
Missouri Law Review
Imagine you have just pled guilty to a felony offense in Missouri. While the court may inform you of certain rights that will be lost, additional rights remain unmentioned. Suddenly, you find yourself stripped of fundamental liberties such as voting, serving on a jury, holding public office, and owning firearms. Additionally, the right to a trial by jury, the assistance of a lawyer at trial, and protection against self-incrimination have been forfeited. In this bleak scenario, a glimmer of hope emerges: the possibility of a gubernatorial pardon. This pardon represents a chance at redemption, potentially restoring all the rights you …

Improvements To Cal Poly's Hybrid Ac/Dc House, Brandon Ng, Andrew Nguyen, Logan Tom
Electrical Engineering
This senior project details the improvements made to Cal Poly’s Hybrid AC/DC House project. The previous state of the house experienced issues with proper reading of the current power being drawn from the connected AC sources, as well as with the system’s multiple-input single-output converter, where thermal overheating of specific FETs prevented the system from reaching its maximum output power. The updates made to the AC/DC house include improved code to prevent faulty readings and display failure and a cleaned-up power monitoring board that removes noisy signals and allows for the correct power implementation to be displayed. In addition, the …

Professors Linda McClain and James Fleming have written an intellectually stimulating book manuscript, “What Shall Be Orthodox” in Polarized Times? It is a privilege to have been afforded access to an early iteration of the book and an opportunity to share our thoughts about it. We (with “we” and its related “our” and “us” denoting Cameron and John) were inspired by Professors McClain and Fleming to reflect about the relationship between pedagogy and the Constitution.

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Background: As per World Health Organization, in 2022, 660000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and 350000 women died from the disease. Sexual behaviour is the major risk factor and exposure to Human Papillomavirus has been established as a causative agent in 70-80% of the cases for development of cervical cancer. Most infections with HPV resolve spontaneously and cause no symptoms, persistent infection can cause cervical cancer in women. Effective primary (HPV vaccination) and secondary prevention approaches (screening and treating precancerous lesions) will prevent most cervical cancer cases. Thus, study was conducted with the objective of assessing the knowledge …

Becoming A More Effective Instructor Using Primary Source Projects, Tricia Muldoon Brown
Becoming A More Effective Instructor Using Primary Source Projects, Tricia Muldoon Brown
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Inquiry-based Learning (IBL) is a pedagogical practice with much supporting research for its effectiveness with all students, but especially among traditionally underrepresented student groups in mathematics. However, IBL classrooms are not easy to implement; in particular, instructors need to know how to write appropriate materials, lead effective class discussions, and deal with student expectations. Primary Source Projects (PSPs) helped me address my deficiencies in these areas and become a more effective instructor. In this narrative, I relate my experiences using PSPs to transform my lecture classroom into a fully student-centered class, starting modestly by utilizing IBL with only one PSP …
From Geometric Intuition To Arithmetical Rigor: Teaching Analysis With Bolzano’S Original Text, Anne Duffee
From Geometric Intuition To Arithmetical Rigor: Teaching Analysis With Bolzano’S Original Text, Anne Duffee
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this paper I argue for the value of reading primary historical texts in mathematics courses. In particular, I show how close readings of Bolzano’s 1817 paper on the Intermediate Value Theorem in an introductory analysis course helps students understand the working use of fundamental analytic concepts and problems. I further argue that the philosophical purpose of reading primary texts is the “desedimentation” of knowledge, a process through which students come to understand the origins of mathematical concepts as solutions to historical problems.

The Role Of Socioeconomic Status In Shaping Associations Between Sensory Association Cortex And Prefrontal Structure And Implications For Executive Function, Maya L. Rosen, Divyangana Rakesh, Rachel R. Romeo
Neuroscience: Faculty Publications
Socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with widespread differences in structure of temporal, parietal, occipital, and frontal cortices. Development of sensory processing regions—in particular visual association cortex (VAC) and auditory association cortex (AAC)—may scaffold development of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Experiences that correlate with SES like cognitive stimulation and language may influence VAC and AAC development, in turn allowing the PFC to resolve conflicts between similar stimuli. SES-related differences in these regions may partly explain differences in executive function (EF) skills. Here, we use structural equation modeling of longitudinal data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development study to test the …
Contract Or Prison, S. R. Blanchard
Contract Or Prison, S. R. Blanchard
University of Chicago Law Review
Critics of the criminal enforcement system have condemned the expansion and privatization of electronic monitoring, criminal diversion, parole, and probation. But the astonishing perversion of contract involved in these new practices has gone unnoticed. Governments are turning to “offender-funded” programs that empower firms to contract with people who are suspected of or have been convicted of crimes— and whose alternative to agreeing to these contracts is prosecution or incarceration. Though incarceration-alternative (IA) contracting is sometimes framed as humane, historical and current context illuminates its coercive nature. IA contracting must be examined under classical contract theory and in light of the …
Measurement And Process Relation For Cast Surface Defects, Nachiket Laxman Shinde
Measurement And Process Relation For Cast Surface Defects, Nachiket Laxman Shinde
Masters Theses
This thesis presents an in-depth investigation into the classification and prediction of surface defects in aluminum sand castings using a combination of experimental trials and machine learning techniques. Key process variables such head height, pouring temperature, resin %, sand type and process were systematically varied to study their influence on defects like veining, and burn-on. Comparative analysis indicated superior performance of the deep learning model in handling nonlinear interactions between process parameters. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating data-driven models with foundry practices to enhance surface quality, reduce rework, and support intelligent decision-making in casting operations.
