Reading Patients' Personalities The Sentence Completion Way, Stephen P. Joy, Lawrence Mccloskey, Wilson Mcdermut
Archives of Assessment Psychology
Previous research has shown that reliable, valid measures of major personality traits can be derived from a sentence completion test, the Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank (RISB). However, all previous samples consisted of undergraduates. Here, we report findings for two clinical samples (N = 120) to whom a variety of self-report inventories and structured clinical interviews were also administered. RISB-based ratings of Extraversion and Neuroticism were consistently correlated with relevant variables in both samples and displayed convergent and discriminant validity vis a vis self-reported traits. RISB-based ratings of Psychoticism were clearly associated with relevant variables in one sample with mixed but …

Chemical Composition Of Omani Red Seaweeds (Gelidium Omanense And Melanothamnus Somalensis) And Their Phytochemicals As Extracted By Different Organic Solvents, Abdullah Al-Nassri, Ahmed Al-Alawi
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
Seaweeds are divided into three categories: green, brown, and red. Each group of seaweeds consists of several families that have differences in composition. Even at the genus level, there are differences in some ingredients, although in general composition, they are nearly the same. Environmental conditions, availability of nutrients, and maturity stage are the main reasons for composition differences. This study aimed to determine approximate composition, mineral profile, protein quality and phytochemical properties of Melanothamnus somalensis & Gelidium omanense seaweeds. Both seaweeds are very abundant in Oman and seaweed Gelidium omanense is one of the unique seaweeds to Oman. Five organic …
Managing Flash-Memory Reliability By Proactive Monitoring Of Bit Error Rate, Na
Managing Flash-Memory Reliability By Proactive Monitoring Of Bit Error Rate, Na
Defensive Publications Series
The lifespan of NAND-based flash memories is limited by physical properties of flash cells. The reliability of retrieving data stored in flash memories can deteriorate over time. This disclosure describes techniques to manage flash-memory reliability by monitoring bit error rate (BER) per physical memory block and by taking certain actions based on the observed BER. Such actions include ignoring BERs that are low enough to be recovered by an error-correcting code (ECC) without impacting performance or reliability and notifying the processor if the BER rises to high levels. Ignoring low BERs, e.g., not escalating low BER rates to the processor, …

In the FLE classroom, the properties of each textual typology are constantly discussed separately. However, it seems to us that the vast majority of learners apparently question the usefulness of all this in their experience. This observation is made in the light of the feedback loop. Since we are convinced that an effective teacher is one who regularly subjects his or her pedagogical actions to reflection, our contribution to the proceedings of this international symposium is intended as a contribution to the various strategies to be adopted with a view to shaping a methodical learner. We will show that the …

This article is intended to be an account of our scientific project, a project carried out by crossing disciplinary boundaries, going through several stages in order to achieve more decompartmentalized research, to adopt a multidisciplinary approach of stylistic, genetic and computer science. In order to approach the complex question of style in Flaubert, the one which represents the sovereign image of the writer par excellence, we followed in an initial phase a philological study, resembling the "study of genesis" in vogue at the turn of the century of the 19th and 20th centuries. After this work carried out on the …

In France, primary school teachers are considered "generalist teachers" capable of expertly teaching all subjects. This ambitious vision of the "ideal teacher," defined by the 2013 French professional competency framework, can lead to professional distress, particularly in foreign language teaching where many primary school teachers feel inadequate.
To improve the well-being of future primary school teachers during language lessons, an innovative teacher training based on children's literature was tested with first-year Master's students in education. The study began with a questionnaire assessing their self-perceived English level and emotions towards teaching it, revealing linguistic insecurity and negative feelings such as anxiety …

The words of the other abound in Milan Kundera's novels. In what forms is this discursive otherness textualized ? What is its massive and quasi-systematic use for ? These two questions are at the heart of this article devoted to the study of reported speech in Kunderian fiction. The hypothesis that we would like to support here is that this novelistic scenography of reported speech responds to a polyphonic project conducive to the interaction of voices and points of view, with a view to revealing the world.

This research is framed within the analysis of "teacher action" (Cicurel, 2013). It investigates the perspectives of educational in spectors regarding the didactic discourse of French as a foreign language teachers in the secondary vocational cycle within the Moroccan context. The objective is to gather and analyze the inspectorate's views on the concept of "enunciative shift" (Cicurel, 1996), which is defined as the transition from a relatively objective stance in didactic communication to an enunciative position that emphasizes the teacher's subjectivity during interactions with students. The inclusion of the inspection body is driven by a desire to deep enourin quiry, …

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into language learning represents a real revolution compared to traditional software. With its ability to process large quantities of data, offer personalized lessons and instante correction and automate educational tasks, AI is changing the way we teach and learn. AI-driven language apps make learning more interactive, immersive and flexible for learners and less laborious and time-consuming for teachers. However, this innovation raises many concerns because it could not only hinder human interactions and socialization of learners but also perpetuate educational inequalities due to the digital divide. It is therefore essential to find the right …

In Morocco, the profiles of primary school pupils are becoming increasingly diverse. Faced with this reality, teaching practices are also heterogeneous, but are they all inclusive ? By inclusion, we mean maximising every learner's chance of success, whether or not they have special needs. This article looks at the importance of flexibility and adaptability in school organisation and teaching practices. It aims to verify, using examples, the value of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in managing heterogeneous profiles in a Moroccan primary school class, in order to guarantee every chance of success. Since it focuses on the two poles …

Portuguese For Mozambican Mothers – A Language Empowerment App, Josh Kindarara, Alexandre Lopes, Gwendolyn Patwardhan, Riana Santos, Sara Wheeler
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
In Mecúfi, Mozambique, the mothers of children who attend school through the DIFF EDUCATION program have a strong desire to learn Portuguese, the country’s national language, due to colonization. However, they have minimal formal education and little to no experience with technology. They are unable to read or write in any language, including their native language, Makhuwa, making many current educational resources unusable. This leaves these mothers without accessible, culturally relevant tools to help address their linguistic needs.
This project focuses on developing an educational application designed for non-literate mothers in rural Mozambique. The app emphasizes visual and auditory learning …
The Blue Division In The Soviet Union: Cultural Exchange Through The Lens Of Art, Abigail Beus
The Blue Division In The Soviet Union: Cultural Exchange Through The Lens Of Art, Abigail Beus
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the cultural encounters and artistic interactions between Spanish Blue Division volunteers and the Soviet Union during World War II. While scholarship has long focused on the grand-scale looting conducted by the Nazis, Spain’s role—particularly that of the Blue Division—in wartime art theft and cultural exchange has been significantly underexplored. Sent by Franco’s fascist regime to support Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union, the Blue Division served not only as military auxiliaries but also as cultural intermediaries. Drawing on memoirs, letters, and the Blue Division’s own newspaper Hoja de Campaña, this study analyzes how Spanish soldiers encountered, …
The Epistemological Dimension Of Dewey’S Emergentist Metaphysics: Sense And Signification, Andrii Leonov
The Epistemological Dimension Of Dewey’S Emergentist Metaphysics: Sense And Signification, Andrii Leonov
Center for Dewey Studies Essay Award
I argue that Dewey had a kind of naturalistic or pragmatic epistemology already in his Experience and Nature which constitutes the Pragmatic Epistemology View. Dewey’s naturalistic epistemology is exemplified by his theory of “sense” and “signification” and as such is the first order consequence of Dewey’s second order qualitative naturalism. Instead of the classical epistemological question, “How is knowledge possible anyway, überhaupt?”, Dewey’s pragmatically reconstructed version of it would be “How do we make sense of the world that is around us?” Instead of the classical “theory of knowledge,” Dewey’s pragmatic epistemology can be seen as a theory …
Delaunay Keyer For Colorspace-Local Matte Extraction And Spill Suppression, Isaac J. Criddle
Delaunay Keyer For Colorspace-Local Matte Extraction And Spill Suppression, Isaac J. Criddle
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Keying is a fundamental, common, and expensive problem in visual effects. It consists of two subtasks: matte extraction and screen spill removal. Today’s standard keyers often fall short on edge cases including unevenly lit screens, fine detail, and sky replacements. As a result, keying continues to be a laborious process requiring highly trained compositors and complex bespoke setups. Our method does not assume one single saturated screen color, allowing for more versatile workflows. The keyer functions by interpolating over a Delaunay tetrahedralization of user-given sample colors. We evaluate our method relative to the visual effects industry’s standard keyers on a …

K-Mshc: Unmasking Minimally Sufficient Head Circuits In Large Language Models With Experiments On Syntactic Classification Tasks, Pratim Chowdhary, Peter Chin, Deepernab Chakrabarty
Computer Science Senior Theses
Understanding which neural components drive specific capabilities in mid-sized language models ($\leq$10B parameters) remains a key challenge. We introduce the $(\bm{K}, \epsilon)$-Minimum Sufficient Head Circuit ($K$-MSHC), a methodology to identify minimal sets of attention heads crucial for classification tasks as well as Search-K-MSHC, an efficient algorithm for discovering these circuits. Applying our Search-K-MSHC algorithm to Gemma-9B, we analyze three syntactic task families: grammar acceptability, arithmetic verification, and arithmetic word problems. Our findings reveal distinct task-specific head circuits, with grammar tasks predominantly utilizing early layers, word problems showing pronounced activity in both shallow and deep regions, and arithmetic verification demonstrating a …
Evaluating Vision Language Model Capabilities For Time Series Interpretation: An Empirical Study With Conversation Duration And Psychological Flourishing Data From The Studentlife Dataset, Jusung Park
Computer Science Senior Theses
This research investigates the capability of Vision Language Models (VLMs), specifically ChatGPT‑4o, to interpret and predict psychological outcomes based on visual representations of time series data. Leveraging conversation duration metrics and psychological flourishing scores from the StudentLife dataset, this study rigorously evaluates the predictive accuracy of VLMs using various methods, including zero‑shot on raw data, zero‑shot on graph data, few‑shot learning, qualitative labeling, and chain‑of‑thought reasoning. Despite multiple methodological enhancements, predictive performance remains modest, revealing significant challenges in quantitative interpretation of visualized temporal data by current multimodal models. We demonstrate that standardizing input tokens by using graph images rather than …

Character Relationship Prediction In Movies: Toward Emotionally-Aware Automatic Audio Descriptions, Seung Hyun Hahm
Computer Science Senior Theses
Automatic audio description (AD) systems support visually impaired audiences by narrating visual content, but they often fail to capture the interpersonal dynamics that underpin narrative understanding. In this work, we introduce a novel framework for character relationship prediction as a means of enriching audio descriptions with socially grounded context. Our contributions are threefold: (1) we propose the Character Relationship Module (CRM), which extends identity-aware video captioning with directed sentiment inference between character pairs; (2) we develop a scalable weak supervision pipeline that uses large language models to generate 669,520 relationship annotations across 202 films; and (3) we construct a complementary …

How To Gender Include, Stephen Krueger
How To Gender Include, Stephen Krueger
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Gender inclusion is not an optional part of library work—at least, it isn’t if we want all those “Libraries Are For Everyone” signs to be true. And yet, the reality is that many libraries fail the most basic aspects of gender inclusion for patrons, employees, or both. Even in libraries where Trans 101 trainings do occur and are well received, or where the baseline of knowledge among employees is relatively high, the question remains: What now?
This article intends to answer that question. Very broadly speaking, gender inclusion work in libraries means sustained action to ensure that some patrons and …

Traumatic Ulna Fracture With Plastic Deformation Of The Radius In A Skeletally Mature Pregnant Female: A Case Report, Robert Wetzel
Traumatic Ulna Fracture With Plastic Deformation Of The Radius In A Skeletally Mature Pregnant Female: A Case Report, Robert Wetzel
Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship
Case: A 20-year-old pregnant female presented with an ulna fracture after a crush and bending type injury. Anatomic reduction of her ulna was not possible due to plastic deformation of the radius, requiring a corrective osteotomy of the radius. She is now 16 months out from surgery with full painless range of motion and radiographic union. Conclusion: Plastic deformation of forearm fractures in adults is a rare phenomenon. It is possible that the patient’s pregnancy contributed to her injury. Patients with uncommon fracture morphology can make operative intervention more complicated and necessitate additional procedures to achieve optimal motion and alignment.

Secondary Medical Conditions In Pediatric Survivors Of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Role In Performance-Based Neurocognitive Functioning, Caregiver-Reported Outcomes, And Adaptive Functioning And Transition Readiness Intervention, Victoria Seghatol-Eslami
All ETDs from UAB
Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at risk of secondary medical conditions arising from disease and treatment effects. Secondary medical conditions are associated with adverse survivorship outcomes (e.g., neurocognitive, psychosocial, and adaptive functioning/healthcare transition) in adult survivors of childhood ALL. Little is known about secondary medical conditions in pediatric ALL survivors. Further, the relationship between secondary medical conditions and survivorship outcomes has not been explored in this younger population. This dissertation examined 1) the role of secondary medical conditions in performance-based and caregiver-reported neurocognitive, psychosocial, and adaptive functioning; and 2) the roles of secondary medical conditions and neurocognitive …

Expertise In Magicians - Testing The Insight Hypothesis., Gustav Kuhn, Alice Pailhès, Gg Cole
School of Psychology
Over the past two decades an abundance of research has examined the psychological mechanisms underpinning magic effects in order to gain new insights into human cognition. As part of this endeavour, it has been suggested that the experience of performing tricks in front of live audiences has given magicians unique insights. The aim of the present paper was to examine the nature of this expertise and investigate the extent to which magicians understand non-magicians’ beliefs about magic and the effectiveness of specific magic principles. In Experiment 1 we describe the skills that magicians believe make them experts, and the type …

Motionteller: Multi-Modal Integration Of Wearable Time-Series With Llms For Health And Behavioral Understanding, Aiwei Zhang, Arvind Pillai, Andrew Campbell, Nicholas C. Jacobson
Computer Science Senior Theses
As wearable sensing becomes increasingly pervasive, a key challenge remains: how can we generate natural language summaries from raw physiological signals such as actigraphy - minute-level movement data collected via accelerometers? In this work, we introduce MotionTeller, a generative framework that natively integrates minute-level wearable activity data with large language models (LLMs). MotionTeller combines a pretrained actigraphy encoder with a lightweight projection module that maps behavioral embeddings into the token space of a frozen decoder-only LLM, enabling free-text, autoregressive generation of daily behavioral summaries.
We construct a novel dataset of 54,383 ⟨actigraphy, text⟩ pairs derived from real-world NHANES recordings, and …
An Efficient Algorithm For Finding High Harmonic Centrality Vertices In Graphs, John Balson
An Efficient Algorithm For Finding High Harmonic Centrality Vertices In Graphs, John Balson
Computer Science Senior Theses
In this thesis we consider the problem of harmonic centrality in graphs. This measure is used widely in the study of real-world complex networks. In particular, we consider the problem of finding a high harmonic centrality vertex in time much faster than $O(mn)$, the time required to calculate the exact harmonic centrality of all vertices in a graph. The problem of calculating centrality measures faster has received much attention in recent years, since calculating the exact harmonic centrality of all vertices can be infeasible for large graphs; hence, faster algorithms are needed. This thesis proposes a new algorithm for finding …
