Vaccination Mandates And Civil Liberties, Sophia Choti
Vaccination Mandates And Civil Liberties, Sophia Choti
Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Law Journal
Vaccination mandates in the United States sit at the crossroads of public health and individual freedoms, a complex and often controversial intersection. The enforcement of immunization policies has a long history of legal and ethical scrutiny, balancing the state's responsibility to protect its citizens with the constitutional rights individuals hold dear. The COVID-19 pandemic reignited this debate, amplifying existing tensions and presenting new challenges. This analysis argues that while vaccination mandates are constitutionally valid and essential for safeguarding public health, they must be designed with care to respect individual liberties and address modern challenges such as misinformation, inequities, and public …

The technical interview process for software engineering position has drastically changed in recent times to focus on Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA). Although, data structures and algorithms are a foundational aspect of several programming languages, the questions asked in the technical interview process do not accurately reflect, in terms of style and difficulty, the experience students and professionals have with DSA from school and work respectively. As a result, many have looked to online resources in order sharpen their DSA problem solving skills. However, the existing solutions are riddled with flaws. In particular, the learning resources they provide are locked …
Real-Time 3d Automated Spotlight Tracking System, Francine Garcia, Mary Hemker
Real-Time 3d Automated Spotlight Tracking System, Francine Garcia, Mary Hemker
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Commercially available automated spotlight systems tend to be expensive and unattainable for smaller school or community theaters. This project provides a cheap alternative to automated spotlight systems on the market and is compatible with most stage lighting architecture by using the Digital Multiplex (DMX) Protocol.
Circuit boards with Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio frequency track an actor’s coordinates in a 3D space defined by four UWB anchors. A Raspberry Pi single-board computer acts as a controller and converts the coordinates into pan and tilt angles and maps these calculations to values that the spotlight can read in order to move. These values …
Beyond The White Coat: The Fight For Equal Healthcare By Minorities, Morgan Robinson
Beyond The White Coat: The Fight For Equal Healthcare By Minorities, Morgan Robinson
Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Law Journal
Systematic oppression through medical discrimination has left a high rate of death in the minority community, with Black women having 2.6 times the rate of maternal mortality than White women. Medical professionals ignore minorities at a higher rate than White people. People of Color have been used as testers for medical professionals and reap the generational trauma of it, such as subjects of the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment passing it to their children. Even more, doctors today are taught that Black people have a “higher pain tolerance than other races,” so their symptoms are often dismissed. Legal solutions must be implemented …
Serial Killer Terminology And Its Effect On Criminal Trials, Alice Gnesin
Serial Killer Terminology And Its Effect On Criminal Trials, Alice Gnesin
Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Law Journal
The terminology used during court proceedings plays a pivotal role in shaping the legal outcomes and sentencing for serial killers. This study examines how specific language, mainly terms such as "serial killer," impacts sentencing severity. By analyzing cases involving serial killers and the terminology used, there is a proven correlation between terminology and sentencing. For example, Ted Bundy (30 confirmed murders) and Jeffrey Dahmer (17 confirmed murders) were both investigated by Robert Ressler—who pioneered FBI profiling and coined the term "serial killer." The term was extensively used within their trials, impacting their sentencing. This can be compared to John Wayne …
Interpretable Ai In Education: A Comparison Of Glass-Box Models For Predicting Student Success, Jan Glazenborg
Interpretable Ai In Education: A Comparison Of Glass-Box Models For Predicting Student Success, Jan Glazenborg
SAML-25 Workshop on Statistical and Machine Learning
This Master’s thesis addresses early identification of first-year Computer Science students at risk of underperformance by comparing inherently interpretable (“glass-box”) predictive models with the existing Naïve Bayes–based PreSS tool. The PreSS dataset was originally compiled by Quille & Bergin from 692 first-year CS1 students across eleven institutions in Ireland and Denmark, who completed surveys on programming and mathematics backgrounds, gaming habits and a short programming test four to six hours into the course. Seventeen normalized features capturing demographic, academic and behavioural factors were extracted. In this thesis, four machine learning models are evaluated: Naïve Bayes, explainable boosting machines, automatic piecewise …

Ascertion: Middleware For Content Moderation, Mia Lassiter, Vani Aggarwal
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
The Internet is dominated by a handful of social media platforms that disproportionately control content curation and moderation. As a result, it is increasingly difficult for users to discern verified and credible information from misinformation and disinformation. Middleware is a specialized software with mechanisms to decentralize platform power and reinstate users with autonomy over their online experiences. We propose middleware that gives users the autonomy to create and consume authentic and trusted content. We achieved a proof of concept for a middleware with mechanisms for verifiable content posting and authentication. Our solution is implemented as a Chrome plug-in that provides …
Beyond Barriers: Supporting Formerly Incarcerated Students In American Higher Education, Carly Jean Colbert
Beyond Barriers: Supporting Formerly Incarcerated Students In American Higher Education, Carly Jean Colbert
Journal of Prison Education Research
The United States prison industry is the largest in the world. With the reintroduction of Second Chance Pell in 2015, more people are starting their education while incarcerated, and some attempt to finish after release. However, they are faced with numerous barriers that may prevent graduation. Drawing on Astin’s theory of student involvement, this mixed-methods study examines the challenges that formerly incarcerated people face while pursuing college degrees. Rather than focusing on access, this research focuses on the supports that institutions of higher education can establish to help formerly incarcerated students persist and successfully complete their undergraduate degrees. The findings …

Tracking The Kinetics Cellular Glycolysis And Glutaminolysis Pathways Using Vibrational Spectroscopy, Combined With Multivariate Statistical And Machine Learning Approaches For Data Mining, Zohreh Mirveis, Nithin Patil, Hugh Byrne
SAML-25 Workshop on Statistical and Machine Learning
Understanding dynamic metabolic processes within living cells is crucial for gaining insights into cellular function and disease mechanisms. The kinetics of glycolysis and glutaminolysis pathways play significant roles, as alterations in their activity have been linked to various disorders, including cancer and mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder. These pathways therefore hold potential as biomarkers for disease diagnosis and therapy. However, real-time monitoring of their kinetics remains challenging due to the lack of suitable non-invasive techniques. Current gold-standard fluxomics approaches, such as mass spectrometry, are destructive to cells and thus unsuitable for time-resolved studies. In this study, we evaluate …
A Framework For Scalable And Controlled Hallucination Data Collection, Lin Ting Liang
A Framework For Scalable And Controlled Hallucination Data Collection, Lin Ting Liang
Computer Science Senior Theses
This thesis addresses a key bottleneck in hallucination research: the scarcity and limitations of hallucination benchmark datasets. Existing datasets typically focus on a single type of hallucination and are expensive to produce due to the need for manual prompt creation and annotation. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel mixture-of-experts (MoE) adversarial framework that actively induces hallucinations. Our framework employs three large language model (LLM) agents that iteratively and adversarially revise prompts to provoke hallucinated responses from a target question-answering model. It automates the generation of both intrinsic hallucinations (logical inconsistencies) and extrinsic hallucinations (inclusion of unverifiable external information). …
Dewey And Merleau-Ponty: Science, Experience, And Nature, Michael Timm
Dewey And Merleau-Ponty: Science, Experience, And Nature, Michael Timm
Center for Dewey Studies Essay Award
This paper defends comparisons between pragmatist and phenomenological philosophies of science by comparing Dewey and Merleau-Ponty’s philosophies of science or scientific method. Merleau-Ponty might be said to “answer the phenomenological tradition’s criticism of naturalism” from within the Husserlian phenomenological tradition itself, revindicating the consensus between pragmatism and phenomenology set forth by Rosenthal and Bourgeois. In the absence of an argument that “methodological inconsistency” amounts to methodological illegitimacy, phenomenology ought not reject pragmatist philosophies of science because the Husserlian phenomenological tradition espouses a relative naturalism not unlike pragmatist naturalism. More importantly, this consensus with pragmatism sustains phenomenology’s own critique of scientism.

A Novel Distance Protection Method For High‑Voltage Line In Substation With Integration Of Inverter‑Interfaced Distributed Generator, Zhengfei Lu, Minghao Wen, Yu Zhou, Longxing Jin, Shuai Ma
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
The strong variability, spatiotemporal randomness, and nonlinear controlled characteristics during faults of inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) such as direct-drive wind turbines and photovoltaic generators pose significant challenges to the existing relay protection systems in power grids. When faults occur in high-voltage lines of substations with integration of IIDGs, the fault characteristics are more complex compared to those in the case of the access of traditional synchronous machine sources to high-voltage lines, which makes it difficult for conventional positive-sequence voltage-polarized phase-comparison distance protection to adapt to. As a result, the performance of protection for power grids deteriorates. This paper analyzes the …

Distribution Network Fault Segment Location Based On Gaf‑Resnet50, Yuxuan Shi, Yanhui Xi, Weijie Zhang
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Distribution lines are an integral part of modern power system, which directly influence the safety and stability of power supply. Distribution network fault location can be classified into precise fault location and fault segment location. Considering the complexity of distribution network structure, this paper proposes a fault segment location method based on Gramian angular field (GAF)-ResNet50. The one-dimensional time series is converted into a two-dimensional GAF image by the GAF algorithm, and the deeper-level fault features of the signal are extracted from the GAF image by using the framework of residual neural network so that the fault areas can be …

Gaussian Iterative Power Flow Algorithm For Distribution Network Considering Affine Model Of Distributed Generation, Xinghua Huang, Gonglin Zhang, Feixiong Chen, Han Wu, Yuanliang Fan, Shichuan Chen, Hongbin Wu
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Affine power flow calculation is an effective method for uncertainty analysis in power systems. With the increasing integration of distributed generation (DG), the existing Gaussian iterative affine power flow algorithm faces challenges in dealing with distribution networks that incorporate DG controlled by different strategies. To address these problems, a Gaussian iterative power flow algorithm for a distribution network that integrates an affine model for DG is proposed. Firstly, an uncertainty power flow model is established based on affine arithmetic, and a Gaussian iterative model for the affine power flow model is constructed. Secondly, the affine models for DG under different …
Improving Follow-Up Adherence: A Case Study On Patient Experience Initiatives, Aaron Haley
Improving Follow-Up Adherence: A Case Study On Patient Experience Initiatives, Aaron Haley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patient-centered care has become increasingly paramount in healthcare organizations (Thummak et al., 2023). A critical component of this model is patient adherence to scheduled appointments, as missed visits can negatively affect outcomes (Halladay et al., 2019), increase healthcare costs, waste resources, and disrupt workflow (Low et al., 2023). This qualitative case study investigated the factors contributing to patient nonadherence to scheduled visits in a multidisciplinary behavioral health organization (BHO) in the Southwestern United States. The study utilized data from the behavioral health leader (BHL), organizational records, and secondary sources and was guided by the Baldrige Framework of Excellence as its …

The coastal region of Alexandria Governorate in Egypt holds significant strategic importance for trade while being susceptible to extreme weather events. It confronts a dual challenge of the rising sea levels and, as found in this study, land instability. While much attention has been rightly directed towards sea level rise (SLR), the stability of the land warrants equal consideration. Here, a comprehensive analysis of land stability is conducted in Alexandria by measuring Line of Sight (LOS) displacements and assessing their topographical, hydrological, and coastal impacts. Persistent Scatterer Interferometry technique is used to measure the LOS displacements in association with land …
Distribution And Habitat Use Of Sounders Gray Whales From 1990 To 2023, Sara N. Mach
Distribution And Habitat Use Of Sounders Gray Whales From 1990 To 2023, Sara N. Mach
Honors Projects
Abstract: Every spring, a small subgroup of gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus), referred to as “Sounders,” migrate to northern Puget Sound (NPS), Washington State, to forage on small crustaceans, particularly during years of low prey availability in the Arctic, the primary foraging habitat for gray whales. In contrast to gray whales in other locations, Sounders primarily forage on ghost shrimp (Neotrypnea californiensis) while in NPS. These small crustaceans live in the sediment in the intertidal to shallow subtidal zones, so gray whales must wait for higher tides to feed. Gray whale abundance in NPS and time spent …

Around 1000 years ago, Madagascar experienced the collapse of populations of large vertebrates that ultimately resulted in many species going extinct. The factors that led to this collapse appear to have differed regionally, but in some ways, key processes were similar across the island. This review evaluates four hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the loss of large vertebrates on Madagascar: Overkill, aridification, synergy, and subsistence shift. We explore regional differences in the paths to extinction and the significance of a prolonged extinction window across the island. The data suggest that people who arrived early and depended on hunting, …

Behavioral Skills Training: Comparing Parent Implementation To Registered Behavior Technician Implementation, Jessica Anderson
Behavioral Skills Training: Comparing Parent Implementation To Registered Behavior Technician Implementation, Jessica Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Behavioral Skills Training (BST) is an evidence-based practice appropriate for practitioners, parents, clients, and other populations. It is frequently used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to support and augment skill development. Parent training in ABA has been found to be beneficial, and often critical, in the progress of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While BST is a popular method of parent training, it is unclear how effective this type of training is in comparison to the training given to a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). This study took place in conjunction with an ABA clinic providing in home therapy. …
