The Role Of Antitrust And Pole-Attachment Oversight In Tva Broadband Deployment, Ben Sperry, Geoffrey A. Manne, Kristian Stout
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
As part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), signed by President Joe Biden in November 2021, Congress provided $42.5 billion for broadband deployment, mapping, and adoption projects through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, with the stated goal of directing the funds to close the so-called “digital divide.” But actions by pole owners—such as refusing to allow broadband companies to attach their lines on reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms—threaten to slow broadband deployment significantly.
Section 224 of the Communications Act exempts municipal and electric-cooperative (co-op) pole owners, such as the LPCs, from oversight by the Federal Communications …

Ping-Chong-Jiang-Ni Formula Effectively Inhibits Migration And Invasion Of Endometriosis 12z Cell Line Via Trip13, Jiahua Peng, Shuzhen Liu, Yunxiang Xie, Min Xiao, Chichiu Wang, Ruining Liang
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
The Ping-Chong-Jiang-Ni Formula (PCJNF), a compound of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has demonstrated remarkable clinical effectiveness and is widely utilized in the treatment of endometriosis (EMs). Previous studies have shown that PCJNF inhibits the proliferation and induces the apoptosis of ectopic endometrial stromal cells (EESCs) by modulating the JNK signaling pathway. In our most recent study, published in January 2024, we found that PCJNF effectively alleviates EMs-associated pain by reducing inflammatory mediators, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and nerve growth factor (NGF). Furthermore, PCJNF down-
regulates the expression of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), phosphorylated TRPV1 (p-TRPV1), and protein …

Journal of Health Research
Background: The Brief Assessment of Social Skills – Dementia (BASS-D) was developed to provide a concise and effective measure of social cognition across four domains. This study aimed to validate the Thai version of BASS-D (BASS-D TH) by examining its psychometric properties and the associated factors.
Method: BASS-D was forward and back-translated between Thai and English language. Minor modifications were made to enhance cultural replicability. The BASS-D TH was administered to 28 older adults without dementia and 13 dementia patients.
Results: Mean age (t=-3.67, p < 0.001), education years (t=2.70, p=0.01) and TMSE score (t=7.49, p< 0.001). The control non-dementia group and dementia group showed mean BASS-D TH total scores of 76.43 (SD = 9.1) and 45.85 (SD = 15.1). The findings demonstrated construct validity of BASS-D TH (group difference t = 8.093, p < 0.001). Correlation with established concurrent tests exhibited concurrent validity, particularly with the face emotion perception and memory of new faces tests, and lower correlations with Theory of Mind. Reliability analyses indicated strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.807). Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis yielded an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.974.
Conclusion: While limited by sample size and the availability of concurrent tests in the Thai …
Orbital Magnetic Coil System And Global Wireless Power Grid For Planetary Energy And Protection, Michael W. Terzi
Orbital Magnetic Coil System And Global Wireless Power Grid For Planetary Energy And Protection, Michael W. Terzi
Defensive Publications Series
Abstract
This paper presents a visionary concept for a global energy generation and distribution network utilizing an orbital array of magnetic coils to harvest electricity directly from Earth’s magnetic field. Leveraging Faraday induction, kilometer-scale conducting loops in low Earth orbit generate electrical power as they cut through geomagnetic lines, transforming orbital kinetic energy into usable electrical energy. This power is wirelessly transmitted to Earth via microwave, laser, or resonant Earth-ionosphere coupling—drawing inspiration from Nikola Tesla’s Wardenclyffe design—to a distributed network of ground-based receiver towers. Beyond energy supply, the system offers speculative planetary defense benefits by reinforcing Earth's magnetic field and …

Serverless Bluetooth Low Energy (Ble) Reconnection Via Proxy, Salil Rajadhyaksha, Arthur Tiv, Igor Zaslavsky
Defensive Publications Series
While Bluetooth low energy (BLE) advertising is less power-intensive than scanning, emitting an always-on connectable advertisement consumes power. This disclosure describes techniques of power-efficient BLE advertising by using a proxy device to effect a seamless reconnection protocol between a central device and a peripheral device without user interaction. A companion device (e.g., a smartphone) paired with a peripheral (e.g., a smartwatch) acts as a BLE proxy. When a central device (e.g., a tablet) scans for the peripheral, the proxy advertises on behalf of the peripheral using encrypted certificates and identifiers. Such proxy advertising enables the central device to locate the …

Enhancing Multi-Step Stock Price Forecasting With Social Media Sentiment And Engagement Metrics, Damilare Olaniyan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates whether social media sentiment can improve the accuracy of stock price prediction beyond traditional historical data. While financial markets have long relied on structured numerical indicators, the growing influence of public discourse on platforms like Twitter has introduced new opportunities for extracting market-relevant signals from unstructured text. The study focuses on four major technology firms and combines sentiment features derived from Twitter with historical stock prices in a hybrid machine learning framework. Engagement-weighted sentiment, linguistic complexity, and polarity intensity were extracted using natural language processing techniques and incorporated into classification and regression models. Results show that including …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Musicians throughout time and genre have strived to connect with their audience through music, whether they are trying to communicate a story or their own unique style. Musicians in alternative rock genres are no different, and therefore, this thesis looks at three different bands and analyzes the ways they convey meaning through their music for their audiences. Starting with Green Day, in the American Idiot album, they communicate the inner turmoil of the characters through a rhythmic motif and the different ways it presents in the music. Next, Fall Out Boy communicates authenticity to their fans through lyrics, vocal style, …
Synthesis Of Anti-Schistosomal Heterocyclic Compounds Targeting Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase, Alexander Stewart
Synthesis Of Anti-Schistosomal Heterocyclic Compounds Targeting Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase, Alexander Stewart
Lawrence University Honors Projects
chistosomiasis is a deadly and debilitating parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma mansoni which affects 200+ million people annually who come into contact with contaminated water. Currently only one drug (Praziquantel) has been used to treat this disease for almost 50 years, and fear of resistance is growing, thus a new drug and new target is needed. Inhibition of the organism-specific redox defense protein Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase (TGR) has lead to the death of the worm in vitro, indicating that it would be a good druggable target. Fragment based analysis and x-ray crystallography have returned the outline of a lead compound …

Burned In Berlin – Banned In Boston: Censorship Of Booksellers During The Interwar Period In The U. S. As Compared To Germany, 1919-1939, Aleksandra Jimerson-Mckinnies
Lawrence University Honors Projects
During the twenty-year interwar period from 1919-1939, two vastly different nations faced their own personal wars with the censorship of booksellers. Germany—at first the Weimar Republic, then later the Nazi Regime—underwent such a transformation that Berlin went from one of the literary capitals of the world to the site of the most infamous of censorship crimes: the book burnings. Meanwhile, the United States was a long-standing democratic nation in which freedom of speech was one of its cornerstone tenants. Despite the differences of governments and the scope and scale of the censorship, there were major similarities between the tactics and …
Evolutionary Conservation Of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein In Clarthrin-Mediated Endocytosis, Jonah Friedmann
Evolutionary Conservation Of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein In Clarthrin-Mediated Endocytosis, Jonah Friedmann
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) is a cellular process for internalizing extracellular materials and recycling parts of the plasma membrane into intracellular vesicles. When a threshold of membrane-bound receptors is met at the cell surface, endocytic proteins organize into a conformation that can invaginate the membrane and separate a vesicle into the cytosol. Our current model for understanding CME has been derived from studies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Previous research has led to a model for how Las17, a homolog of Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome Protein (WASP), contributes to CME. WASP proteins are critical actin nucleators involved in multiple processes. In S. cerevisiae, Las17 …

Police Reform Advocacy And The Emergence Of The Seattle Black Panthers, Hayden Young
Police Reform Advocacy And The Emergence Of The Seattle Black Panthers, Hayden Young
Lawrence University Honors Projects
This honors project examines the factors which led to the emergence of the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP) in 1968, with a focus on one of the BPP’s signature issues — police reform. Negative perceptions of the Seattle PD, especially among the city’s rapidly growing population of Black residents, led Mayor Allan Pomeroy to form a citizen’s committee titled “the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Police Practices” (MACPP) in 1955. The MACPP recommended the formation of a civilian-led police oversight board in its 1956 final report, and civil rights groups such as the Urban League, ACLU, and NAACP …
Neural Oscillations Enable Concurrent Visual Perception And Visual Working Memory Processing, Khayla Santiago
Neural Oscillations Enable Concurrent Visual Perception And Visual Working Memory Processing, Khayla Santiago
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Successful goal-directed behavior requires balancing task-relevant information stored in working memory and the continuous processing of incoming sensory input, yet the neural mechanisms underlying this coordination remain unclear. This study examines how neural oscillations support concurrent visual perception and visual working memory. Using electroencephalography (EEG), we recorded brain activity while participants performed a dual task paradigm requiring them to simultaneously maintain one orientation in their memory while monitoring another orientation on the screen. After variable time intervals (50 different SOAs between 500-1500ms), participants compared a probe against either the memorized or visually monitored orientation. Analysis of response times and accuracy …
Predicting The Photophysics Of Bdpa-Based Radicals Using Density Functional Theory, Samantha Kristine Piwoni
Predicting The Photophysics Of Bdpa-Based Radicals Using Density Functional Theory, Samantha Kristine Piwoni
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Through this project, computational tools were refined to be more rigorous and robust for the primarily synthetic SazLab at Lawrence University. The primary research of the SazLab involves synthesizing and characterizing luminescent radicals based on two stable radical systems: TTM and BDPA. The BDPA system is of particular interest because the effects on luminescence of its nonalternant symmetry are less understood compared to the alternant symmetry of TTM. Quantum mechanical calculations, particularly Density Functional Theory, were utilized to help target syntheses and gain insight into the photophysics of luminescence. A prior student researcher with the SazLab had successfully synthesized 2-pyBDPA, …

Harlem’S Avenues For Agency: An Exploration Of Black Female Agency In Angelina Weld Grimké And Zora Neale Hurston’S Short Stories, Jessica Ellen Hartenbower
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores themes of Black female agency in selected short stories by Angelina Weld Grimké and Zora Neale Hurston. Pushing back against the belief that the Harlem Renaissaince was a movement solely for male artists, Grimké and Hurston write short stories that center Black women and their experiences. Through the avenues of bodily autonomy, the using or silencing of voice, the opportunity and ability to make choices, issues of justice, retribution, and vengeance, the holding of authority, and being empowered or disempowered, I examine the female characters’ exercising of their agency to varying degrees. I also discuss how religious …
Interactive Read-Alouds Of Translingual Texts As A Catalyst For Literacy Engagement Among Emergent Bilingual Elementary Students: A Case Study, Anna Handy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the population of emergent bilingual students continues to increase in U.S. schools, the teaching force remains predominantly White and monolingual, with many educators underprepared in how to support emergent bilingual students’ literacy development or sustain their diverse linguistic practices. This is reflected in longstanding gaps in performance between monolingual and multilingual students on standardized assessments of reading. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore one possible approach to increase emergent bilingual students’ engagement during and response to literacy instruction: interactive read-alouds of children’s books that incorporate translanguaging. This study sought to describe and interpret how emergent …
A Ritual Of Institutions: The State Industrial School In Golden, Colorado And The Shaping Of American Youth, Cyndal Groskopf
A Ritual Of Institutions: The State Industrial School In Golden, Colorado And The Shaping Of American Youth, Cyndal Groskopf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the Colorado State Industrial School as a ritualistic institution that influenced boys aged 7 to 19 through Americanization practices between 1881 and 1930. By employing primary documentation, drone imagery, and LiDAR technology, the study examines how cultural and physical activities, along with personal statements, described and maintained the ritualized nature among these incarcerated youth. The findings reveal how institutional routines and activities reinforced narratives of American identity, particularly in relation to themes of personal identity, conformity, and agency. These rituals played a crucial role in institutionalizing cultural ideals and shaping the identities of marginalized youth. The research …

Desire, Disobedience, And Drag: My Lesbian Fangirling Of Emily Dickinson, Aaron Copland, And Alena Smith, Nina Schifano
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Taking an interdisciplinary approach that sits at the intersection of musicology, literary studies, and queer studies, I undergo a queer reading of Emily Dickinson’s writings and subsequent interpretations of her works. I begin my analysis with a queering of genre, using archival evidence to consider the complex ways gendered genre norms affected how Dickinson wrote, how her works were edited and published, and how people have since read her. I then undertake a genre-queer reading of some of the writings that she sent to Susan Dickinson, her sister-in-law and lifelong love. I turn next to Aaron Copland’s 1950 setting for …
Optimizing Option Market Clearing, Juan Andrés Malaver Alvarado
Optimizing Option Market Clearing, Juan Andrés Malaver Alvarado
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Modern options markets clear each strike in isolation, leaving cross-strike arbitrage unexploited. This thesis applies a payoff-dominant clearing mechanism to realized trades—roughly 2 000 Cboe VIX option executions from June–November 2016—after classifying each trade’s side and bundling by expiration. Three optimization formulations are tested: a fractional linear program (LP), a mixed-integer LP, and a pure integer program. On a 10-core laptop every bundle solves in < 0.5 s. The LP captures the greatest surplus, yet the integer models recover nearly as much while filling whole contracts and holding only modest margin. Results reveal persistent, albeit small, inefficiencies in executed trades and demonstrate that an integral cross-strike auction could operate in real time. The accompanying C/Gurobi code is modular and readily extendable to early-exercise options. Trade-level evidence thus supports redesigning exchange clearing to consider the complete option book.
