Lesion-symptom mapping techniques are essential to determine brain regions critical for language functions. However, high collinearity in neuroimaging and behavioural data remains a challenge for distinguishing neural substrates supporting multiple language domains (shared variance) and those subserving specific language functions (unique variance). Here, we employed a novel approach to multimodal lesion-symptom mapping using multivariate partial least squares regression to delineate the latent structure of lesion-behavioural mapping in aphasia and decompose the shared and unique neural determinants of language impairments. A total of 86 participants with chronic (>12-month post-stroke) aphasia after left hemisphere strokes were examined. Language impairment was assessed …
Clinical Practice Guideline For Intentional Rounding, Julia Griggs
Clinical Practice Guideline For Intentional Rounding, Julia Griggs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This is a quality improvement clinical practice guideline (CPG) to address the inconsistent staff rounding practices, developed following recognition of a fall rate of 3.2 per 1000 patient days and declining patient satisfaction in the project facility. I developed the CPG using current evidence-based practices to establish standardized procedures for purposeful rounding to enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and care quality. Three experts, including an educator, clinician, and administrator, evaluated the CPG using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II), a tool consisting of seven domains used for measuring the methodological rigor and transparency in which a …
Research On Credit Card Transaction Risk Prediction Model Based On Multi-Source Data Fusion And Its Application, Ziang Qi
Harrisburg University Other Works
In this paper, the credit card risk control and early warning model is constructed to predict and control the credit card risk by fusing multi-source data through data mining technology. After analyzing the theoretical application of XGBoost algorithm on credit card transaction risk, its model parameters are optimized by particle swarm algorithm to construct PSO-XGBoost credit card transaction risk prediction model. The credit card transaction risk prediction performance of the PSO-XGBoost model is verified and applied to the abnormal transaction risk assessment of Bank A. The AUC value, accuracy, F1 value, precision rate, and recall rate of the PSO-XGBoost model …
Power And Praise: The Case Of The Late Brezhnev Era, Andrew Buck, Jeffrey Hass
Power And Praise: The Case Of The Late Brezhnev Era, Andrew Buck, Jeffrey Hass
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
The culture of praise in the late Brezhnev era was highly developed and ritualistic. This research explores the purpose of praise in Soviet society and maps out its different faces through a structural analysis of letters to the editor. We conceptualize praise as a kind of symbolic capital that Soviet citizens use to signal their loyalty to one another. Soviet citizens expressed agreement through public praise of others published on the pages of widely-circulated newspapers. The analysis demonstrates variation in the structure of praise that depends on its direction, location, topics and the identities of givers and receivers. We identify …
Psychopathy, Emotion, And Mock Juror Decision-Making, Bailey A. Hall
Psychopathy, Emotion, And Mock Juror Decision-Making, Bailey A. Hall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that mock jurors impose harsher sentencing (including death sentencing) when defendants are described as psychopathic, but reasons for this are unclear. This preregistered study investigated the role of juror anger and cognitive biases (predecisional distortion [PDD]) in the relationship between defendant psychopathy descriptions and mock juror decision-making. In an online experiment, participants (undergraduates in a large Southeastern university [n=410] and a US Census-representative online sample [n=384]) reviewed case facts of a murder, were randomized to expert witness testimony of defendant psychopathy or control conditions and read the prosecution and defense arguments before sentencing the defendant to death or …
Food For Thought: Binge Planning Cognitions And Behaviors Within An Online Sample Of Adults With Binge-Type Eating Disorders, Rose H. Miller
Food For Thought: Binge Planning Cognitions And Behaviors Within An Online Sample Of Adults With Binge-Type Eating Disorders, Rose H. Miller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research has begun exploring the phenomenon of binge planning, wherein individuals who binge eat do so with forethought, rather than impulsively. What specific thought processes and behaviors comprise binge plans remains unexamined. How, or if, the eating disorder presentations of individuals who plan binges ahead of time differ from those who binge impulsively is also still unknown. The present study sought to explore the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors associated with binge planning, and to identify how the motivations, symptomologies, and personality traits (i.e., impulsivity) differ between binge eaters who do or do not plan their binges. An online study using …
Integrating Motivational Traits Into The Approach-Avoidance Distinction, Wesley D. Gardiner
Integrating Motivational Traits Into The Approach-Avoidance Distinction, Wesley D. Gardiner
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the potential for integrating motivational traits into the established approach-avoidance motivational framework, which describes individuals’ general tendencies to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Although various theories and empirical studies have advanced our understanding of approach-avoidance motivation, critical constructs such as achievement motivation and trait anxiety have often been overlooked or misoperationalized. Addressing these gaps, the current study integrates Kanfer and Heggestad’s (1997) motivational trait taxonomy with constructs from achievement goal orientation, regulatory focus theory, and reinforcement sensitivity theory. This research evaluated a hypothesized two-factor model of approach and avoidance motivation using confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses with …

The Medicine Forum
Near misses, medical errors with no appreciable resultant harm, often go undetected and underreported despite great emphasis on patient safety event reporting over the past two decades.1 Additionally, near misses are often not triggers for proactive institutional corrective action due to the widespread retroactive safety culture following more harmful or catastrophic safety events.2 At Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, all internal medicine first-year residents (PGY1s) participate in an immersive safety event review curriculum of near miss or low-harm safety events, previously described in the literature.3 The following details the event review findings and implemented health-system level changes following …

An Unusual Complication Of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: Port-Site Hematoma As The First Sign Of Bone Marrow Involvement And Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, Michael Predi, Do, Julia Palecki, Md, Jordan M. Isaacs, Ba, Ruben Rhoades, Md
The Medicine Forum
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a life-threatening condition marked by a spectrum of thrombosis due to activation of procoagulant factors and bleeding due to eventual consumption of these factors. DIC invariably occurs secondary to an underlying condition, including infection, inflammatory conditions, trauma, and malignancies. Treatment of DIC primarily involves treatment of the underlying cause.1
Bone marrow invasion occurs when tumor cells infiltrate the hematopoietic marrow space, displacing progenitor cells and causing cytopenias. This process is distinct from bone metastases, where malignant cells spread to the cortical or trabecular bone, typically causing bone pain, pathologic fractures, or hypercalcemia. Disseminated carcinomatosis …
Be Afraid Of Severe Pulmonary Hypertension And Right Ventricular Failure In The Peri-Op Patient, Avish Patel, Md, Lily Ackermann, Md
Be Afraid Of Severe Pulmonary Hypertension And Right Ventricular Failure In The Peri-Op Patient, Avish Patel, Md, Lily Ackermann, Md
The Medicine Forum
Heart failure (HF), particularly right ventricular (RV) failure, and pulmonary hypertension (PH) present significant risks during the perioperative period. Despite the fact that these comorbidities are not always considered in preoperative risk evaluation, they are very important when considering perioperative risk. Current risk assessment tools mainly include the Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI); however, it does not effectively assess severity of HF or PH. This review aims to highlight the major points on peri-operative management in non-cardiac surgeries using a case of a patient with severe PH who experienced unexpected mortality from acute RV failure post-operatively.
Tax Arbitration And The Rule Of Law: A Challenge For The Coordination Of International Taxation, Gianluigi Bizioli, Frederico Bertocchi
Tax Arbitration And The Rule Of Law: A Challenge For The Coordination Of International Taxation, Gianluigi Bizioli, Frederico Bertocchi
Akron Law Review
Tax arbitration mechanisms, which are provided both at the international and EU level, play a significant role in solving international tax disputes. However, such mechanisms do not seem to be fully compliant with the concept of Rule of Law that seems to arise from International and EU Laws. In fact, tax arbitration mechanisms appear to lack —mainly— certain due process guarantees that allow such procedures to comply with the equality principle.
More specifically, tax arbitration involves almost only the States, which are the party to it, allowing them to exercise relevant powers and influence —for instance— over the arbitration body …
The Foundations Of International Taxation: Knocked From Post To Pillars, Yariv Brauner
The Foundations Of International Taxation: Knocked From Post To Pillars, Yariv Brauner
Akron Law Review
After a century of convergence and consolidation, the international tax regime is at a crossroads. A recent program promoted by the OECD, known as the two pillars program, departs in many ways from long standing norms of the regime. But the OECD and many states insist that the foundations of the regime have not changed, portraying the two pillars as a negotiated, pragmatic compromise that responds mainly to the challenges that the digital economy presented to the old rules. This article rejects this portrayal, arguing that the program is far from being a balanced or a truly negotiated compromise between …

Reforming The Foreign Tax Credit, Subpart F, And Gilti In Light Of Pillar Two, Andrew Duxbury, Jonathan D. Grossberg, Genevieve Tokic
Akron Law Review
The foreign tax credit has been a cornerstone of the United States international tax system since as early as 1919. However, there have been a number of recent developments in the international tax landscape that warrant a significant revision to the foreign tax credit rules as they apply to controlled foreign corporations (“CFCs”). In particular, the current global tax deal known as the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework, Pillars One and Two, may cause the United States to lose significant tax revenue if changes are not made to international tax rules, including the foreign tax credit. Thus far, the United States has …

Creating And Re-Energizing Communities Of Meaning Throughout A Course, Nancy A. Heise, Anum Ahmed
Creating And Re-Energizing Communities Of Meaning Throughout A Course, Nancy A. Heise, Anum Ahmed
Feminist Pedagogy
We propose a feminist course approach wherein instructors build what Amie Macdonald (2002) called "communities of meaning" in their classrooms (p.120). Through an intentional focus on supporting students' 1) individual identities, 2) holistic well-being, and 3) epistemic "buy-in" to classroom content, students will connect more deeply not only to themselves and their classmates, but also to the course material. We suggest four community-building touchpoints as a starting point for instructors looking to integrate this course approach. We start with an activity to lessen awkwardness around first-day name pronunciation. We emphasize the importance of creating collaborative classroom expectations with students, and …

Choose Your Own Reading Assignment: A Strategy To Diversify Perspectives In Class Discussion, Breena J. Brockmann
Feminist Pedagogy
This activity reimagines course reading assignments by offering students a choice between multiple texts that work together to explore a shared theory or theme. Students are invited to select readings that align with their interests or learning goals. This activity embraces the feminist pedagogical principle of collaborative learning and uses the active learning strategy of learning through teaching by asking students to work in groups to create mini lessons that teach their classmates about their selected reading. Through their discussion of multiple case studies, the class develops an understanding of feminist theory as “geographically, historically, and culturally grounded (Mohanty, 2003, …

Effective mineral exploration in a basement complex necessitates precise delineation of overburden thickness and mineral potential within the Basement Complex terrain. This study examined the subsurface geology and assesses the abundance of prospective mineral deposits within the study area The objective of the study was to outline the overburden thickness and infer mineral potential using integrated ground magnetic and electrical resistivity geophysical methods. The electrical resistivity method unraveled the litho-stratigraphic sequence as surmised from geo-electric layers. Consequently, the mineralization of the basement delineated was characterized by the magnetic method. The acquired data were processed using WINRESIST and Oasis Montaj respectively. …

Early Recurrent Midgut Volvulus Post Ladd's Procedure In A Newborn: A Case Report, Nicole Clarke, Joanna Sajdlowska, John Paul Bustamante, Nishith Bhattacharyya
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Ladd's procedure is the standard surgical intervention for intestinal malrotation. Although generally curative, rare cases of early postoperative complications, including adhesions or recurrent volvulus, can necessitate reoperation. We present the case of a full-term newborn girl who underwent emergent Ladd's procedure on Day 3 of life for malrotation with volvulus. She was discharged on postoperative Day 17 but returned the following day with recurrent bilious emesis. Imaging suggested partial obstruction. Exploratory laparotomy revealed recurrent volvulus with two twists at the duodenojejunal junction, which was successfully reduced. The patient recovered well and was discharged on postoperative Day 8. This case underscores …
Unpacking White Language Supremacy In The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Higher Education, Anders Tobiason
Unpacking White Language Supremacy In The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Higher Education, Anders Tobiason
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article explores how the ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education codes the idealized information literate individual as White. It illuminates how White language supremacy is used in the Framework to code the idealized information literate individual as White. By articulating the use of White language supremacy in the Framework, this article suggests how to begin the process of deconstructing this White ideal and thus transforming the Framework from a tool of colonization and oppression into something that steps toward liberation.

Due to the issue of accidents being frequent occurrences, using machine learning to drive vehicles has quickly become a relevant topic as it could potentially become a way to minimize fatalities and damages. Thus, the project aims to approach self-automation with the focus on maximizing the vehicle’s performance and the machine’s ability to make the best decisions within that time.
Today’s self-driving cars use radar or cameras as well as digital signal processing algorithms to sense the environment while using …
A Universal Lstm Stock Price Predictor Utilizing News Sentiment Analysis And Technical Indicators, Kelly Zhou, Zhirong Wang
A Universal Lstm Stock Price Predictor Utilizing News Sentiment Analysis And Technical Indicators, Kelly Zhou, Zhirong Wang
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
The stock market is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including historical price trends, technical indicators, news sentiment, and macroeconomic conditions. Traditional stock prediction models typically focus on a single stock, limiting their ability to capture broader market relationships. Investors require a model that can accurately forecast price movements across multiple stocks to optimize trading decisions.
We propose a universal stock prediction model that leverages relationships across all S&P 500 stocks. Unlike traditional single-stock models, our approach utilizes a multi-stock LSTM architecture trained on a combination of historical stock prices, technical indicators, and news sentiment. The model is designed …
Identification Of Strategies To Improve Milking Parlour Efficiency: Insights From Empirical Data And Simulation Analysis, Ryan Prendergast
Identification Of Strategies To Improve Milking Parlour Efficiency: Insights From Empirical Data And Simulation Analysis, Ryan Prendergast
Theses
The abolishment of European Union milk quotas in 2015 has increased the strain on dairy farm infrastructure and labour availability. For both pasture and confinement-based production systems, the milking process requires the largest annual labour input. Hence, this area represents an opportunity for achieving gains in labour efficiency. The aims of this thesis were to 1) document and quantify factors that affect milking process efficiency and 2) develop models that can simulate milking parlour efficiency with respect to these factors. Data were collected from a sample of commercial, pasture-based Irish dairy farms across the Republic of Ireland that used herringbone …

Predicting Single-Leg Eccentric Hamstrings Strength In Aging Athletes Using Diagnostic Ultrasound- And Survey-Derived Parameters, Lee J. Hinkle
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Eccentric hamstring strength declines with age and contributes to mobility limitations. Although Nordbord testing quantifies eccentric strength, few studies have examined it in older adults, and none have predicted strength performance on this test using ultrasound or survey- based measures. Methods: We recruited 122 senior athletes (60 female) at the 2024 Huntsman World Senior Games. Ultrasound-derived cross-sectional area (CSA), echogenicity, and subcutaneous fat thickness, along with demographic and activity data, were used to predict single-leg peak force using Bayesian regression. Models were sex-stratified, and predictors were selected using leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO IC). Results: In males, CSA, age, leg side, …
