Water Exposure Time Distributions Controlled By Freshwater Releases In A Semi-Enclosed Estuary, Caitlin R.R. Turner, Matthew Hiatt

Faculty Publications

Freshwater diversions manage water shortages, salinity, and control floodwater by redirecting river flows; however, their full ecological and hydrological impact remains unknown. This study examines the Lake Pontchartrain Estuary in Louisiana using a hydrodynamic model and Lagrangian particle tracking to assess how diversion operations (open, closed) and tributary discharge levels (low, median, high) influence water exposure time—the cumulative duration water remains in a domain, including re-entry. Exposure time was analyzed based on the time required for 50%, 75%, and 90% of released particles ((Formula presented.), (Formula presented.), and (Formula presented.)) to leave a defined region of interest (ROI). Results show …

A Quantitative Study Of Presidents At Public And Private 4-Year Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Richard J. Gallot, Jr. Jul 2025

A Quantitative Study Of Presidents At Public And Private 4-Year Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Richard J. Gallot, Jr.

PhD in Organizational Leadership

There has been a notable increase in presidential turnover at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), leading to significant leadership challenges (Freeman & Gasman, 2014). Abrupt leadership changes create instability that impacts recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff, as well as overall morale on campuses (Gasman et al., 2010). Despite the importance of effective leadership, there is limited research specifically focusing on HBCU presidencies (Freeman & Palmer, 2020). Although the American Council on Education (ACE) has surveyed college and university presidents every 5 years since 1986, few studies have investigated HBCU presidents as a distinctive group. Existing research …

Environmental And Social Values Are Important To All Utahns, But Conservative Utahns Are More Likely To Prioritize The Economy, Sarah E. Wilson, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad

Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)

In the political landscape of modern America, few would disagree that people on either end of the political spectrum exhibit differences in priorities and values. Since the 1970s, polarization between left and right-leaning individuals and decision-makers regarding environmental matters has grown significantly.1 For example, a 2023 Gallup Poll found that 78% of liberals favored prioritizing the environment over economic concerns, compared to just 20% of conservatives - representing the largest partisan gap since Gallup began including the question in their poll in 1984.2

Whose Right(S)?: Civil Rights Impact Of Cultural Conflicts In The Curriculum, S. David Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Statutes seeking to prohibit the teaching of certain curricular topics that are considered divisive infringe upon the civil rights of students, parents, and teachers. The conflict over what should be taught implicates the rights of students, specifically their right to receive and to learn information; the rights of parents, specifically the right to control the education of their children; and the rights of teachers, specifically the First Amendment and academic freedom. “Anti-Woke” legislation, as it is broadly termed, is designed to silence those who seek to engage in the critical analysis of the structural and systemic barriers that have prevented …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Blood analogs are widely employed in in vitro experiments such as particle image velocity (PIV) to secure hemodynamics, assisting pathophysiological diagnoses of neurovascular and cardiovascular diseases, as well as pre-surgical planning and intraoperative orientation. To obtain accurate physical parameters, which are critical for diagnosis and treatment, blood analogs should exhibit realistic non-Newtonian shear-thinning features. In this study, two types of blood analogs working under room temperature (293.15 K) were created to mimic the steady-state shear-thinning features of blood over a temperature range of 295 to 312 K and a shear range of 1~250 s−1 at a hematocrit of ~40%. Urbanization In Resource-Based County-Level Cities In China: A Case Study Of New Urbanization In Wuan City, Hebei Province, Jianguang Hou, Danlin Yu, Hao Song, Zhiguo Zhang

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study investigates the complex dynamics of new-type urbanization in resource-based county-level cities, using Wuan City in Hebei Province, China, as a representative case. As China pursues a high-quality development agenda, cities historically dependent on resource extraction face profound challenges in achieving sustainable and inclusive urban growth. This research employs a multi-method approach—including Theil index analysis, industrial shift-share analysis, a Cobb–Douglas production function model, and a composite urbanization index—to quantitatively diagnose the constraints on Wuan’s development and assess its transformation efforts. Our empirical results reveal a multifaceted situation: while the urban–rural income gap has narrowed, rural income streams remain fragile. …

What's The Matter With Lozada: How The Board Of Immigration Appeals Coerces Immigration Lawyers To Breach Legal Ethics, Kari E. Hong Jul 2025

What's The Matter With Lozada: How The Board Of Immigration Appeals Coerces Immigration Lawyers To Breach Legal Ethics, Kari E. Hong

Articles

In general, if an attorney makes a mistake, they can cure it by notifying the forum and filing the appropriate remedy. Immigration law, by contrast, stands alone by requiring the client (or a new attorney) to corroborate any mistake by filing a bar complaint against the first attorney. This requirement was established in a 1988 case, called Matter of Lozada. Much has been written on how the Lozada rule is unnecessary (a mistake does not need to be corroborated by a bar complaint and state bars are complaining about a deluge of unnecessary complaints for negligence) and harms the immigration …

Modification Of Epic System’S Simple Visit Coding (Svc) Evaluation Rule To Reduce Medical Claim Denials, Edith Ballard Jul 2025

Modification Of Epic System’S Simple Visit Coding (Svc) Evaluation Rule To Reduce Medical Claim Denials, Edith Ballard

Translational Projects (Open Access)

Background: The recruitment, development, and retention of skilled medical coding staff has become increasingly challenging for healthcare providers. To alleviate staffing burdens, Epic Systems’ electronic health record (EHR) introduced the Simple Visit Coding (SVC) work queue, designed to evaluate hospital patient encounters and automatically assign International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis codes. However, the current SVC work queue evaluation rule at a prominent academic Oncology Care Organization (OCO) in the South does not utilize autonomous, generative, or computer-assisted coding (CAC) technologies. The work queue evaluation rule uses a simple rule-based program logic that relies on …

Synthesis Of Inorganic Actinide Compounds With Neptunium, Plutonium, And Americium, Travis Kelly Deason Jul 2025

Synthesis Of Inorganic Actinide Compounds With Neptunium, Plutonium, And Americium, Travis Kelly Deason

Theses and Dissertations

There is a rush of countries around the world making the switch to greener energy sources. Nuclear energy power plants are an integral part of the shift from fossil fuels, but there are concerns over the best way to handle nuclear waste. Most of the nuclear waste is currently disposed of by incorporating the waste into a glass form through vitrification, but research into alternative waste forms, such as promising crystalline materials, could provide a more robust method of containment. Research on actinide materials is lacking due to the dangers of working with radioactive material and there are few labs …

Exploring The Dynamics Of Human-Robot Interaction: Robot Error, Sentiment Analysis, And Politeness, Krishna Kodur, Manizheh Zand, Matthew Tognotti, Sean Banerjee, Natasha Kholgade Banerjee, Maria Kyrarini

Electrical and Computer Engineering

As robots become more integrated into daily life, understanding natural human communication is essential for developing user-friendly human-robot interaction (HRI) systems. While prior research focuses on robot-initiated behaviors, little is known about how user-initiated politeness, sentiment, and communication patterns influence perceptions of robots in real-world tasks. This study addresses this gap by analyzing interactions between 35 participants and Alex, a mobile manipulator that understands unscripted speech, during a collaborative cooking task. The study explores four hypotheses: 1) The average number of words per command used for instructing the robot is affected by how the person perceives the robot’s interaction., (2) …

More Than An "Anxious" Generation: How Value Systems Anchor The Human Experience, Sailor Nelson Jul 2025

More Than An "Anxious" Generation: How Value Systems Anchor The Human Experience, Sailor Nelson

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Experience is the key to everyone’s emotional development, rather than knowledge and information gathering (Haidt, 2024). This study, conducted under Dr. April Masarik’s Human Universals Project in the Human Development and Ecology Lab, explores shared human values and life philosophies across generations – challenging the idea that moral differences are solely generational. Using Jonathan Haidt and Jesse Graham’s Moral Foundations Theory and Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis, I’m analyzing student autobiographical narratives from a PSYC 419 course (n = 94) to identify how value systems develop and function. In previous literature reviews and analyses, nine core themes emerged. A …

Online Age Verification With Privacy-Preserving Facial Images: A Dual-Stage Machine Learning Approach, Jeremiah Denning, Jeremiah Robinson

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Effective age verification is critical for protecting minors online, yet current systems often force a choice between accuracy and user privacy. Our research explores this trade-off by developing and evaluating machine learning models for facial age estimation that prioritize both privacy and precision on difficult edge cases.

We are testing AI models (ResNet34, ViT-Tiny) on the UTKFace and Wikipedia datasets using two core strategies. First, we employ unique, privacy-preserving image transformations. Our baseline pixel-scramble ResNet34 model, which fully anonymizes the user's face, achieved a competitive accuracy of approximately 88% compared to 93% accuracy on the original images. Second, we are …
