Studying Religious Symbols And Bias In Court Proceedings, Nicholas A.R. Fraser, Colton Fehr Jul 2025

Studying Religious Symbols And Bias In Court Proceedings, Nicholas A.R. Fraser, Colton Fehr

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

MOCK JURY STUDIES INVESTIGATING the impact of religious symbols on jurors have produced conflicting findings, raising questions about how religious bias should be studied in judicial settings. Our study adds to the literature in three ways. First, we develop a clear theoretical framework which identifies dispositional and situational triggers allowing researchers to more precisely define and measure religiously motivated bias. Second, we show that mock jury experiments with video-based treatments simulating audio-visual cues are more likely to produce reliable findings relative to text-based studies. Third, we present the first empirical evidence of how mock jurors react to courtroom oaths. Our …

Shari’A, Inshallah: Finding God In Somali Legal Politics By Mark Fathi Massoud, Danyal Maqbool

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Shari’a, InshAllah: Finding God in Somali Legal Politics (“Shari’a InshAllah”), written by Mark Fathi Massoud, professor of politics and legal studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is a compelling and fascinating work chronicling the relationship between law, religion, and politics in the context of Somalia’s recent history. In this book, Massoud explores the inextricability of religion from Somali legal politics as the country grapples with its colonial and post-colonial legacies and relationships to power in a society where God serves as a conduit for both faith and aspirations of self-determination. In a region where distrust of Western institutions …

An Exploratory Analysis Of U.S. Academically Intensive Charter Schools (Aics), Robert Maranto, Jamison White, Sean Woytek

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Considerable amounts of research have discussed "No Excuses" charter schools preparing traditionally disadvantaged students for higher education. Yet, no scholarly work has identified or investigated U.S. academically intensive charter schools (AICS) that were founded to enable students to excel academically as much as their abilities and efforts allow. Here, we offer an exploratory study of AICS, defining them, describing the lived experience of an AICS principal, presenting the first national data comparing AICS campus and student characteristics to those of other charter schools, and assessing whether, nationally, AICS succeed on their own terms, with relatively high academic achievements. The data …

Monitoring The Kinetic Evolution Of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation Using Raman Microspectroscopy, Francesca Ravera, Esen Efeoglu, Hugh J Byrne Jul 2025

Monitoring The Kinetic Evolution Of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation Using Raman Microspectroscopy, Francesca Ravera, Esen Efeoglu, Hugh J Byrne

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Raman microspectroscopy (RMS) offers a powerful, non-destructive approach for in situ monitoring of dynamic biochemical processes within cells. However, the ability to reliably data-mine the spectroscopic signatures and their evolution and extract meaningful information can be challenging. Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) regression analysis is a powerful chemometric technique that can potentially address this challenge by deconvoluting the spectra into individual component spectra, each representing a specific biochemical species, and regressing the solutions against kinetic constraints. In this study, MCR-ALS analysis was performed on spectral data of differentiation process of mesenchymal stem cells into chondrocytes, carried out on two …

All Decisions

In a nonpayment case, the court dismissed the landlord's petition without prejudice due to a "defective rent demand" containing a substantial discrepancy in the amount owed, approximately 25%. The court also granted the tenant's motion for an order to correct, compelling the landlord to address issues with the apartment. The decision serves as an example of effective legal strategy by a tenant who successfully moved to both dismiss the case and compel repairs.

This study presents the first model intercomparison of aerosol-cloud-turbulence interactions in a controlled cloudy Rayleigh-Bénard Convection chamber environment, utilizing the Pi Chamber at Michigan Technological University. We analyzed simulated cloud chamber-averaged statistics of microphysics and thermodynamics in a warm-phase, cloudy environment under steady-state conditions at varying aerosol injection rates. Simulation results from seven distinct models (DNS, LES, and a 1D turbulence model) were compared. Our findings demonstrate that while all models qualitatively capture observed trends in droplet number concentration, mean radius, and droplet size distributions at both high and low aerosol injection rates, significant quantitative differences were observed. Notably, droplet …

Dietary Nitrogen And Its Role In The Gut Microbiome And Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Narrative Review, Matthew Herrera, Lauri O. Byerley

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

In recent years, gut microbiota has emerged as a critical regulator of gastrointestinal health and disease, with its role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)—including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—being particularly significant. Among the many factors influencing the gut microbiota, dietary components such as fibers, fats, and polyphenols have received substantial attention. However, nitrogen-containing compounds, such as amino acids, nitrates, urea, and even nucleic acids, such as purines, remain underexplored despite their integral role in shaping microbial ecology, host metabolism, and immune responses. Some of these compounds are metabolized by gut bacteria into bioactive molecules such as short-chain fatty acids, ammonia, …

Telogen Effluvium And Anesthesia Considerations: A Case Report, Elizabeth Johnson-Gray, Samantha A. Currier, Hanen Fernandez, Matt Brown, Matthias Franzen

Student Publications

Telogen effluvium is a form of non-scarring hair loss characterized by premature shedding of hair. Pathophysiologically, telogen effluvium occurs when a significant number of hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen phase, resulting in excessive shedding. The exact mechanism is unclear, but it is believed to involve alterations in the hair follicle’s growth cycle, possibly mediated by illness, infection, major surgery, low protein intake, or hormonal changes. Some medications can also be linked to this disease, such as beta blockers, carbamazepine, and vitamin A. When affected hairs are in the resting phase, noticeable hair shedding occurs. Our patient was a 61-year-old …

Liberalism And Lockdowns, D. Robert Macdougall Jul 2025

Liberalism And Lockdowns, D. Robert Macdougall

Publications and Research

Some authors have argued that liberalism cannot support lockdowns because it cannot engage in collective welfare-type reasoning. Others have thought that liberalism can justify lockdown measures, but that legitimate lockdown measures must be based on pre-legal moral principles that set acceptable limits to the imposition of risk or forbid contributing to collective harm. In this essay, I assess the overall relationship between liberalism and lockdowns. Against the first interpretation of liberalism, I argue in favor of the idea that lockdowns can be justified by liberalism. Liberalism protects the liberty of each and so can presumably protect persons from some kinds …

Straddling The Boundary Of Misleading Information Group: Exploring The Association Between Network Brokerage And Morality Expressions, Yiqi Li, Marina Mitiaeva, Ximeng Deng, Una Joh, Yafei Zhang

iSchool - All Scholarship

Existing misleading information studies mostly focus on either the message content or social network structures, overlooking the association between the content and structural factors. This research examines the role of brokers, the key network actors straddling between misleading and true/regular information groups. Content-wise, morality expressions are examined, which signal social media users’ expressions toward what is right and wrong. This research provides insights into the understudied relationship between network brokerage and moral expressions and identifies connections between moral foundation and network brokerage theories. Findings suggest that binding morality (i.e., authority and loyalty) is dominant among network brokers. Practical strategies are …

W-Rag: Weakly Supervised Dense Retrieval In Rag For Open-Domain Question Answering, Jinming Nian, Zhiyuan Peng, Qifan Wang, Yi Fang

Computer Science and Engineering

In knowledge-intensive tasks such as open-domain question answering (OpenQA), large language models (LLMs) often struggle to generate factual answers, relying solely on their internal (parametric) knowledge. To address this limitation, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems enhance LLMs by retrieving relevant information from external sources, thereby positioning the retriever as a pivotal component. Although dense retrieval demonstrates state-of-the-art performance, its training poses challenges due to the scarcity of ground-truth evidence, largely attributed to the high costs of human annotation. In this paper, we propose W-RAG, a method that draws weak training signals from the downstream task (such as OpenQA) of an LLM, …
