Assessing Public Satisfaction And Transportation Choices During Winter Road Maintenance: A Case Study Of Utah, Shailendra Khanal
Assessing Public Satisfaction And Transportation Choices During Winter Road Maintenance: A Case Study Of Utah, Shailendra Khanal
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Winter road maintenance is essential to keeping people safe and mobile during snowstorms. In Utah, where winter weather is a regular part of life, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) plays a vital role in keeping roads clear and functional. While much attention is given to how roads are plowed and managed, there has been less focus on how the public experiences these efforts—and how the decisions to travel during storms are shaped by personal circumstances and perceptions.
This research sets out to understand two things: how satisfied people are with winter road maintenance, and what influences their transportation decisions …
Modeling For Functional Traits In Bluebunch Wheatgrass Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Uav) High-Throughput Phenotyping, Brittany L. Johnson
Modeling For Functional Traits In Bluebunch Wheatgrass Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Uav) High-Throughput Phenotyping, Brittany L. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Changing climates and shifts in community composition in the Intermountain West threaten sagebrush-steppe ecosystems, impacting both plants and animals. Restoring native grasses like bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata; BBWG) can help ecosystems resist invasive species and recover from stress and disturbances. As a native cool-season grass, BBWG is widely used in rangeland restoration for the western U.S. Breeding programs for restoration plant materials, such as seeds for ecological projects, often require years or decades of field testing while facing staffing constraints. High- throughput phenotyping (HTP), which rapidly measures observable plant traits, offers a faster solution using drones to capture time-series …
Beyond The Click: Investigating Mental Models, Targeted Attacks, And Behavioral Interventions Against Clickbait, Ankit Shrestha
Beyond The Click: Investigating Mental Models, Targeted Attacks, And Behavioral Interventions Against Clickbait, Ankit Shrestha
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Clickbait is misleading or exaggerated content on social media that tricks people into clicking on links by making them curious. For instance, posts that use headlines such as “This is the worst day to visit a restaurant”. These clickbait posts can lead to fake news, wrong information, and even harmful websites. Even though many people know clickbait can be risky, they often still fall for it. Existing tools to stop clickbait don’t always consider how people think, the situations they are in, or their different needs. This research looks at how people understand and react to clickbait, and develops different …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Modern manufacturing is making significant advancements by innovating and automating most processes. However, a major challenge remains: systems are constantly evolving and becoming more complex to analyze. Fortunately, a powerful tool can help, Digital Twin (DT) technology. This technology enables the analysis and optimization of processes like never before. A Digital Twin is a real-time virtual model of a physical system that continuously up dates with live data. One of its greatest features is the ability to create infinite scenarios, allowing hundreds of configurations to be tested virtually, risk-free, and without making any real-world changes that could disrupt ongoing operations. …
Decoding Anisotropic Porous Medium: A Synergy Of Lattice Boltzmann Modelling And Operator Learning To Predict Permeability As A Function Of Orientation, Soumya Shouvik Bhattacharjee
Decoding Anisotropic Porous Medium: A Synergy Of Lattice Boltzmann Modelling And Operator Learning To Predict Permeability As A Function Of Orientation, Soumya Shouvik Bhattacharjee
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Understanding the directional properties of porous media is essential for accurately predicting flow behavior, reactive transport, and fluid-solid interactions in systems ranging from geothermal reservoirs to energy storage devices and biological tissues. Directional variations in permeability - reflecting a medium's response to flow at different angular orientations - are particularly important for complex, inherently anisotropic geometries. In this study, we employ a Lattice Boltzmann (LBM) model to calculate directional permeabilities from porous media images subjected to varying flow inlet angles. Three classes of porous media were investigated: (1) synthetic media with circular grains, serving as isotropic baselines; (2) synthetic media …
Study On Self-Interaction Errors In Molecular Properties And Magnetic Behaviour Of 2d Materials Under External Stimuli Using Density Functional Theory, Prakash Mishra
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Density Functional Theory (DFT) has established itself as a practical and versatile method for efficiently studying the properties of materials of solids and molecules. Despite being exact in principle, in practice, DFT calculations rely on an approximation for the exchange-correlation energy functional of the electron density. This results in an erroneous interaction of the electron with itself, known as the self-interaction error (SIE). It arises from the fact that the exchange self-interaction does not exactly cancel out the Coulomb self-interaction. Due to this error, the approximate one-electron potential decays exponentially in the asymptotic region rather than exhibiting the correct ?1 …

Investigating Temporally Dynamic Models Of Choice In Rats And Bumblebees, Jack Van Allsburg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Temporally dynamic models of choice simulate how animals use past experience to make optimal decisions in variable environments. Chapter 1 briefly reviews a series of such modeling approaches and their mathematical properties. Extension of these models to longer experiments (more than 48 hours) designed to produce spontaneous recovery of choice (a behavioral phenomenon implicated in relapse) previously led to results not described well by current models. Chapter 2 comprises an empirical investigation of different explanations for these inconsistent results using rats, evaluating the effect of different test delays on preference following varied reward conditions. The results of the first two …
Geochemical And Stratigraphic Characterization Of The Morrison Formation And Cedar Mountain Formation Contact In The Island Park Quadrangle, Uintah County, Utah, Emily Mcdermott
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation and Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation are among the richest sources of dinosaur fossils. Despite a 24-million-year gap in time (the Jurassic–Cretaceous unconformity), these formations are difficult to distinguish due to their similar rock types and colors. In Utah's Island Park quadrangle (IPQ), these formations are not separated on existing geological maps. This study focuses on identifying and understanding the formational boundary between them using field observations, stable isotope analysis, clay mineralogy, and chemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).
Unlike other areas where a conglomerate layer marks the boundary, the …
Gender-Diverse Individuals' Mathematics Self-Efficacy, Aliya Halterman
Gender-Diverse Individuals' Mathematics Self-Efficacy, Aliya Halterman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Many factors influence how well someone learns and achieve in school and daily living, with motivation being especially important. One key part of motivation is something called self-efficacy, which refers to how much someone believes they can successfully do a specific task (Bandura, 1986; 1997). Research has shown that self-efficacy plays a major role in how well people do, and the quality of their efforts (Pintrich & Schrauben, 1992; Weinstein & Mayer, 1986; Zimmermann, 2000). Additionally, mathematics skills are tied to better outcomes in school, careers, and in daily life. Mathematics also has also had a complex history when it …
High-Frequency Seismic Noise In Desert Environments, Alexis Hernandez
High-Frequency Seismic Noise In Desert Environments, Alexis Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study investigates the generation and modulation of ambient seismic noise in arid environments, with a focus on aeolian processes such as saltation, wind shear, and precipitation events. Using a dense array of three-component seismic nodes co-located with meteorological sensors and a novel particle transport instrument (SANTRI), high-frequency seismic signatures were examined within the Jornada Experimental Range in southern New Mexico. Time-frequency analysis reveals that wind-driven saltation events produce measurable seismic energy enhancements, particularly within the 100-300 Hz band, with clear spectral distinctions between wind-only forcing and particle-laden transport. Additionally, rainfall events were identified by elevated seismic amplitudes in the …

This thesis investigates the origin and geologic context of dolostones associated with the Moab Valley salt wall in southeastern Utah, a feature within the broader Paradox Basin that offers an exceptional opportunity to study the interplay between carbonate sedimentation, diagenesis, and salt diapirism. The fundamental research question focuses on evaluating whether dolostones observed in the Moab Valley are all depositional, diagenetic or structurally reworked components of deeper stratigraphy, and how their presence and geometry relate to the halokinetic processes that shaped sedimentation across the Moab Valley. This study tested the hypothesis that dolostones within Moab Valley represent a mixed assemblage …
Simultaneous Selection Of Inflations And Variables In Multiple Inflations Poisson Model (Mip), John Koomson
Simultaneous Selection Of Inflations And Variables In Multiple Inflations Poisson Model (Mip), John Koomson
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Count data frequently arise in biomedical, economic, and social science research and are often characterized by structural excesses at specific count levels. To accommodate such patterns, Su et al. (2013), among others, introduced the Multiple-Inflation Poisson (MIP) model, which allows for multiple inflated counts within the distribution. However, two critical challenges remain in modeling such data: (i) identifying the true inflation points where excess counts occur, and (ii) selecting the relevant covariates that explain variation in the inflation and count process. This dissertation addresses these issues by advancing the MIP model through a novel methodology that enables the simultaneous selection …

Laser Scan Path Design For Controlled Microstructure In Additive Manufacturing With Integrated Reduced-Order Phase-Field Modeling And Deep Reinforcement Learning, Augustine Twumasi
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is a well-established additive manufacturing technique for fabricating intricate metal components with exceptional precision. A significant challenge in L-PBF is the formation of complex microstructures that influence final material properties. We propose a physics-guided, machine learning-aided approach to optimize scan paths for desired microstructure outcomes, such as equiaxed grains. We employed a phase-field method (PFM) to model the evolution of the crystalline grain structure. To reduce computational costs, we trained a surrogate machine learning model, a 3D U-Net convolutional neural network, using single-track phase-field simulations with varying laser powers to predict crystalline grain orientations based …

Using a cross-sectional survey design, 180 undergraduate students who screened positive for ADHD symptoms completed measures assessing academic burnout, motivation orientations, ADHD symptomatology, and prescription stimulant misuse behaviors and expectancies. Testing these moderation hypotheses addresses important gaps in understanding risk and protective factors that may influence stimulant misuse risk. Negative binomial regression was employed for stimulant misuse analyses using the full sample (N = 180), while linear regression examined expectancies across all participants. Results revealed one …
Multi-Material Cell Clipping On The Gpu, Melanie Cassidy Walsmith
Multi-Material Cell Clipping On The Gpu, Melanie Cassidy Walsmith
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The process of clipping a multi-material cell finds diverse applications across fields such as numerical simulations and computer graphics visualization. Computational fluid dynamics problem often combines multiple materials with different physical properties. The interfaces between those materials may be a part of the solution and evolve in time and can be non-aligned with the mesh. When volume conservation is crucial, interface reconstruction methods are used to approximate such material interfaces. They involve multiple steps, one of which is the process known as clipping. Clipping consists of intersecting and cutting a given cell with a material interface (represented by a line …

Rethinking Iterative Proportional Fitting: Scalable And Hybrid Approaches To Joint Distribution Fitting, William Ofosu Agyapong
Rethinking Iterative Proportional Fitting: Scalable And Hybrid Approaches To Joint Distribution Fitting, William Ofosu Agyapong
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF) algorithm is widely used in contingency table estimation, survey weighting, and synthetic population generation due to its simplicity and strong theoretical foundation for matching observed marginal distributions. However, in high-dimensional settings, IPF faces substantial computational and memory demands, as well as statistical instability caused by sparse contingency tables. Moreover, IPF is less useful in modern population synthesis tasks that require both scalability and realism because, despite its superiority in matching known marginal distributions, it cannot produce realistic out-of-sample data points. To address these limitations, we first propose a blockwise IPF framework, in which the feature …
Seismic Performance Assessment Of Fatigue-Damaged Cantilever Overhead Sign Structures Using Near-Field Ground Motions, Yeasin Ahmed
Seismic Performance Assessment Of Fatigue-Damaged Cantilever Overhead Sign Structures Using Near-Field Ground Motions, Yeasin Ahmed
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cantilever overhead sign support (COSS) structures are one of the most common features of transportation systems, providing navigational information to motorists. The slender geometry, lightweight design, and welded connection at the base make COSS structure susceptible to fatigue cracking under long term cyclic loading from wind-induced galloping, truck-induced gust pressure and so on. COSS structures are traditionally designed considering nominal wind conditions. However, rising incidents of seismic activity in regions like Dallas-Fort Worth related to industrial injection wells in the Permian Basin have created a serious concern regarding the seismic performance of potentially fatigued-damaged COSS structure. The interaction between already …

Technology-Enabled Foreign Object (Fo) Prevention, Christopher Lee Colaw
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The aviation industry incurs $14 billion per year in cost due to Foreign Object (FO) damage and the prevention and resolution techniques associated with foreign object debris. While aircraft loss, material scrap and rework contribute to that cost impact, a traditional approach to aircraft design and manufacturing which is based on human performance is also a significant driver. Failure modes and effects analysis of human based aircraft manufacturing reveals that two of the largest risks are associated with unknown potential for FO creation and the inability to recall or objectively provide evidence of FO conformity for cases of inquiry, learning, …

Mechanical Characterization Of M Plane (10-10) And C Plane (0001) Gallium Nitride Semiconductors Via Spherical Nanoindentation, Daniela Alejandra Duarte
Mechanical Characterization Of M Plane (10-10) And C Plane (0001) Gallium Nitride Semiconductors Via Spherical Nanoindentation, Daniela Alejandra Duarte
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Gallium nitride's (GaN) mechanical characterization is essential for evaluating its performance and long-term dependability, especially when subjected to mechanical stress and irradiation. The design and optimization of GaN-based devices, which are extensively employed in high-power electronics and optoelectronics, depend on an understanding of these characteristics. Mechanical characterization allows for the evaluation of key characteristics, including stress distributions, representing the spatial variation of internal stresses under applied loading, and pop-in events, which correspond to abrupt displacements associated with the onset of dislocation nucleation and slip. These features are essential for understanding the anisotropic (direction-dependent) response of the material to external forces …

Electric power systems have become one of our most critical infrastructures as we've grown dependent on electricity for everyday tasks. Ensuring power systems provide reliable service is a priority that can be affected by disturbance events. A common event is transmission line outages, where a line in the system becomes disconnected due to varying forms of physical damage. If an outage isn't detected in time, other lines in the system may overload, causing cascading failures that leave many customers without power. Therefore, having a power system that can automatically detect outages is crucial for reliability, as it promotes real-time response …

Analyzing The Impact Of Approximate Arithmetic On Deep Neural Network Predictions, Johnatan Garcia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In recent times, we have seen the use of artificial intelligence in our daily lives. It helps us solve complicated problems. Some of these problems can be large and complex, requiring large models. As models grow in complexity, they require more computations and energy to be trained and tested. The execution of these models relies on floating-point arithmetic, which imposes constraints due to its finite precision. Due to these limitations, many of these computations are not exact. When this happens, computers are forced to round or approximate. We can use several number formats to circumvent this issue. For example, in …
